06.07.22 | Get that a lot of people gonna be miffed about re4 bein so low but man the gameplay can be just frustrating a lot of the time. |
JeremiahBullfrog
06.07.22 | Bro a fellow RE5 enjoyer! Play through the resi’s right now actually, finished 0 and half way through Resident Evil Remake |
0xME
06.07.22 | you're high for rating RE4 so low (below 6? really?) especially if 5 is your favourite, since 5 is basically 4 without the horror
honestly this is the first time one of your list actually made me mad, so congrats I guess lmao |
ConcubinaryCode
06.07.22 | Not sure how you can find 4 gameplay frustrating then post 5 as your favorite. They play the exact same. |
Gyromania
06.07.22 | RE5 isn't that good. Honestly 6 is way better because it's just 10x funnier and the combat is a lot more nuanced (I don't think people understand how to actually play this game and all the advanced mechanics that exist in it, which is mostly a failure of the game to explain its systems properly). 5 does have the boulder punch though which is pretty legendary. OG 3 is better than the remake, but the 2 remake destroys the original. RE7 was at least 10 times better than 8 which was an extremely linear and cartoonish game that I thought was a massive disappointment. Even that one estate you go to isn't that creepy. Every location you go to is so short too. 0 was actually pretty fucking bad outside of the opening train sequence, pretty absurd to rank it higher than 2make. 4 is whatever. I get that it's a "classic" but I think it's way overrated. Very excited for that remake tho |
Gyromania
06.07.22 | RE remake, remake 2, and 7 are far and away the best RE games imo. With special nods to original 3, 6, and 4 |
ConcubinaryCode
06.07.22 | Re5 isn't that good but it's still just watered down 4 in coop so it gets a big pass. 6 is terrible IF you try to play it like a resident evil game. It's still a poorly designed game in a lot of ways and I'm ok with it being crowned the worst of the main series.
Re7 gets a lot of praise but it's also super short and light on content. The banned footage dlc should've been standard unlocks because you only get madhouse standard and the replay value is kinda low unless you just really like the gameplay for some reason. Its not exactly fun to play despite being a good experience but its the return to form fans wanted. The "choice" is also so fucking pathetic, did they really think people would spend a long time choosing between your gf and some chick you just met?
0 is really bad, I'd put it comfortably worst in terms of classic RE and right next to 6 in general. This list in general is bonkers. |
Trebor.
06.07.22 | 5 is bad by the series standard
6 is cancer
0 is worst classic RE yeah |
Gyromania
06.07.22 | 5 is every bit as embarrassing as 6 if not more so, except 6 actually has a deeply rewarding combat system if you put the time into learning all the cool tech you can perform. And it has the added bonus of being hilarious. Comparing RE5 and RE6 is like comparing 2 fast 2 furious to the room. They're both totally serious but only one of them is actually funny/amusing, and the other one is 2 fast 2 furious. I honestly just assume people who shit on 6 haven't actually played it. It's obviously not an objectively good game but I can't imagine people not being entertained by its sheer stupidity.
Agreed that 0 blows tho |
ConcubinaryCode
06.07.22 | I mean I agree with you, 5 is played hilariously straight although because of that it turns back around into kinda being funny at points mostly in cutscenes. Irving and Wesker obviously steal the show imo, but I can see how someone like Sheva didn't endear many fans as well.
Likewise I don't find 6 all that funny cuz its also played pretty straight and the villains are kinda flops to me. In contrast to 5 most of the humor will come from the gameplay like Leon sliding down a tunnel while shooting at a shark is fucking ridiculous. Also Leon was done so dirty in that game, his campaign is boring af. I think the problem with all the gameplay changes is none of it is explained and doesn't really reward you for exploring the new skills cuz they're so expensive most people will just pick damage buffs or ammo increases because it makes more sense. It's easier to melee most enemies in the game, and I think that's the point because your guns are kinda shit otherwise. It just goes back to it being a poorly designed game where nothing is explained well. At the end of the day were comparing two of the worst games in the series so I don't think it matters that much. |
wojodta
06.07.22 | 14 should be higher. Wish they were remaking that instead of 4. |
Gyromania
06.07.22 | It's not poorly designed though, it's just poorly explained to the player. Look it up on YouTube - 6 probably has the most involved combat in the entire franchise, it's just a shame it wasn't in one of their very best games.
"like Leon sliding down a tunnel while shooting at a shark is fucking ridiculous."
The game is absolutely chocked full of these moments though. When you go to hit a zombie underwater it looks like you're dabbing; cutscenes glitch out, you can tell your partner "great job. Keep it up" and give them a thumbs up while they're wailing on a boss and they can tell you "thanks, I appreciate it" which just looks so absurdly hilarious. Timed events will fuck you over in the funniest ways too. Every time you think the plot can't get any dumber, it pushes the boundaries of lunacy and it is dumb as all fuck but always entertaining for that reason. Prob seems like I'm defending 6 as some misunderstood masterpiece and it absolutely isn't, BUT, if you take it less seriously and just throw the story in the garbage and learn the combat systems, it becomes a highly entertaining game imo |
ConcubinaryCode
06.07.22 | Again, I'm agreeing lol. Ive put an embarrassing amount of time into the game, mainly because its kinda of a long game. Jake's campaign is also overhated and my favorite. The fucking dude that couldn't get in Ada's pants so he just made his own Ada. Shit gets absurd, but that's not what really hurts the game imo. It's how the game feels to play thay really sucks. It can feel good but most the time it doesn't unless you make specific builds that turn the hindrances down a few notches into tolerable territory. A good majority of the enemies just suck ass to fight too. |
Trebor.
06.07.22 | RE6 has way too much story shit and parts where you're forced to walk at a snail's pace to be enjoyed as a like Beyonetta/DMC kind of game |
Shemson
06.07.22 | Original bottom but original remaster so low makes no sense
Also code Veronica second bottom is sacrilege, that game rules and was so content heavy and ahead of it’s time
1. 2 remake
2. 2 original
3. CVX
4. Original remaster/original
5. 7
6. 3 original
A lot of the rest is interchangeable for me |
Gyromania
06.07.22 | Now that's a criticism I can get behind. It isn't as action packed as other skill based games like devil may cry. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.07.22 | I haven’t played many but love the ones I have (7 and 2 Remake)
I’ve been playing the Evil Within games recently and loving those as well. Didn’t finish 1 because the fight in the car park with the monster with the tentacle eye was insufferable and not fun so I just moved on to 2 and am loving that one so far as well. |
Shemson
06.07.22 | Also, although 8 is a bit too action heavy to be a horror classic, that one bit in the doll house fucked me up more than any game ever first play through when I didn’t know what was coming |
Gyromania
06.07.22 | Evil within 2 was so ridiculously awful. The first like few hours in the town are so good but holy fuck is the latter half of that game a joke |
Gyromania
06.07.22 | The doll house was prob the highlight of the game but honestly, the kids room in RE7 in the guest house was way scarier imo |
MrSirLordGentleman
06.07.22 | 1-3 and Code Veronica is where it is at for me with 3 being the best by far imo.
4 is a fantastic game, but it is where the series started to go full action instead of a real survival horror
5 and 6 are generic action shooters for me
I love that they finally went back to horror in 7 and 8 and, since I prefer first person camera, I really enjoy that as well. The gameplay itself isn't super interesting though since it feels like another clone of Outlast. They lack originality but are still miles ahead of 5 and 6 |
ConcubinaryCode
06.07.22 | Yeah, people really played up the horror of the doll house in 8 and it's the kind of thing that works once and really sucks to do afterward. RE in general blows its load too early and makes subsequent runs less fun.
I also like EW but it was only successful because RE couldn't fill it's own niche. With it back as top dog I can't see a third game. I did just start the story dlc for 1 and like that it does something a little different. |
protokute
06.07.22 | Resident Evil Remake =/= Resident Evil 4 > Resident Evil 2 Remake > Resident Evil 3 OG > Resident Evil 2 OG > Resident Evil 5 =/= Resident Evil Code Veronica > Resident Evil OG > Resident Evil 8 > Resident Evil 0
And the rest I haven't played. I don't find 5 to be a bad game, yeah it's way more action oriented and can be a bit silly, but I find the different areas very atmospheric and interesting, and the gameplay is just as fun as 4.
Also, it's a shame I couldn't care any less for RE8 story, because I dig the areas and atmosphere quite a lot too. |
Underflow
06.07.22 | Even if you subscribe to the multiverse theory there is no universe where 4 is worse than 6 |
protokute
06.07.22 | I'm getting pretty tired of all these remakes, for me it's just a waste of creative force, money and time that could have went into actually new interesting ideas. Resident Evil 4 holds up extremely well as it is, and I don't know how they will improve on that. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.07.22 | @gyro csb I’m enjoying it tho |
MO
06.07.22 | RE2 original, RE3 original, REmake, rest |
Underflow
06.07.22 | 8 was one of my favroites, enjoyed pretty much all of my (brief) time with it. |
Yotimi
06.08.22 | Coming out of sputnikmusic retirement to say RE4 behind RE6 is literally the dumbest thing I've ever seen |
Gyromania
06.08.22 | What's csb? I'm so behind on the lingo
Also RE4 plays like dogshit. I recently replayed the game and yeah, people are viewing it with a big ass, oversized-load pair of nostalgia glasses. It handles terribly. There's no camera you can move around for convenience, you can't move and shoot, shooting feels imprecise and bad, levels are extremely linear, the game's assets look like total shit now. I could go on. It for sure is deserving of a remake and it absolutely doesn't feel as good to play as 6, although obviously story and overall fear factor, 4 takes the cake |
BAT
06.08.22 | re4 plays fine and is one of the best looking games of its generation, it's a game i've played annually and i've never had a problem with how it controls, in fact its one of my goto games to play when i'm blackout drunk.[i have admittedly been/still into speedrunning it/the ps1 resident evils since i was a teen]
my order is 1 > 4 > 2 > 3 > 5. surprised 4's so low and 5 is your number one, my take on it is it's always been a stripped down version of 4 with really fun co-op, in that regard its much better than deadspace 3. also 1 at dead last is a catastrophic, one of my all time favorite games. |
Trebor.
06.08.22 | 4 is prob my favorite game gameplay wise |
Gyromania
06.08.22 | You think it has the best gameplay? It's so stiff compared to later entries tho. The lack of a camera and insistence on shooting while standing still really drags down the gameplay for me. It is a fun game to speedrun but there is some annoying RNG in it, although the same can be said for most speedruns |
ConcubinaryCode
06.08.22 | 4 is really fun gameplay wise. Simple and fun. How much does moving while shooting really enhance the gameplay? Not once when I played the remakes did I feel the game was enhanced because I could shamble while shooting, you want to stay still to get the crit shot anyway. Even 6 is against aiming, just use your quick shot and stamp them to finish them off. Uses less ammo and deals more damage. |
MO
06.08.22 | "shooting feels imprecise and bad"
this couldn't be more wrong. the shaky hands implemented in the aiming system was a nice fair challenge and made you pick your shots. if you rock the red9 with the stock, the aiming is incredibly smooth and precise |
Yotimi
06.08.22 | 6 felt broken. So many headshots didn't even register as hits when I played. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.08.22 | Anyone have any other survival horror recs? I really liked Soma |
CaliggyJack
06.08.22 | I hate how the camera controls in Re4
Hatehatehatehatehate
Also I get it's part of the horror genre but RE games have never been scary to me.
Re6 is balls to the walls fun, especially on co op, but 5 had a better overall experience imho.
I'm not an RE purist so I don't really care whether it goes horror or action as long as I have fun. The controls of Re4 are just fucking frustrating, especially on pc. Archaic camera design that I legitimately despise. JUST LET ME CONTROL MY CAMERA WITH THE MOUSE PLEASE. |
ConcubinaryCode
06.08.22 | Have you tried Amnesia pots? It's the Soma guys first game even though I like soma way more it's still decent. You also might like Observer, Visage, and Condemned 1. the horror genre isn't exactly popping lately.
Assuming you've played the classics of course. |

06.08.22 | @pots try outlast 1 and 2 |

06.08.22 | Thanks homies
@conc I’ve pretty much just played re7, re2 remake, evil within 1 and 2, soma, dead space, FEAR, and some Bioshock. Plague Tale too if that counts idk |
ConcubinaryCode
06.08.22 | Oh dude, gotta get on the first 4 silent hill games then for sure. Still some of the best horror experiences made to the day. Resident Evil Remake and 4 is a must play too though the remake of 4 does come out next March if you decide to wait. The last of us is kinda walking dead-y in terms of story but it's gameplay definitely replicates some good survivalhorror aspects and is pretty fun to play. Left 4 dead is also great but more of a coop zombie shooter and its not the best experience if you play it alone. Idk your set up but all those are pretty easy to get on modern consoles outside maybe SH1. I got the digital version of that on my ps3 but even if you just play sh2 that's the best the series has to offer.
Bloodborne is pretty horrific too but it's an action rpg if you don't mind those. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.08.22 | I’m worried about older games feeling a bit jarring in the gameplay and graphics department but I mean I’ve recently replayed and enjoyed even n64 games so perhaps it’s an unwarranted concern. I just have ps4 and switch.
Have played bloodborne a couple times , love all the fromsoft games |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.08.22 | Oh yeah I have played last of us 1 as well. None of the others u mentioned tho |
ConcubinaryCode
06.08.22 | Oh dude if you have a ps4 REmake is on sale for 5$ right now. It's the 2015 remaster so they added analog control and wide-screen support. If you buy one game it should be that. Re4 is also 8$ but if you want legit survival horror thas RE1 is the easier sale. Camera angles might take a second for you but that's the only thing I think you'll have to come to grips with. The game still looks phenomenal. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.08.22 | Yeah I’m honestly a lot more attracted to the survival horror and puzzling side of the resident evil games I’ve played than the action side. When you get towards the ends and start shooting rocket launchers and shit I tune out a bit. Prefer the atmospheric stuff. |
Gyromania
06.08.22 | Pots - play silent hill 2 and 3. Legitimately the only survival horror games I felt actually frightened to play. Resident evil one remake also comes to mind. I think 7 did horror pretty damn well too but you've already played that. Outlast 1 has great tension and atmosphere too. If you like the helplessness aspect of the genre, you can't go wrong with outlast or alien isolation |
Gyromania
06.08.22 | But yeah if REmake is on sale for $5 that's an absolute steal. Get it, it's truly amazing. You'll have to contend with fixed camera angles but you'll get used to it. It has the atmosphere and puzzles you're looking for. Also don't be afraid of playing silent hill 2 because it's "dated" or whatever - it has art direction and ambience to more than make up for its PS2 era graphics. The fog that shrouds everything covers a lot of the rougher qualities of the games and gives them a dreamlike mood that's totally unmatched in the genre. Oh and the music is just... It's amazing. Best game soundtracks of all time. Skip one though, that one has definitely shown its age and I doubt you'd be able to get into it like 2, 3, and 4. And ABSOLUTELY do not play the "HD collection". It is terrible af and ruins the experience. Emulate it or buy it if you have old hardware to play it on |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.08.22 | Kk. |

@Storm highest selling RE game, 5 is fucking great.
Also, Roger Craig Smith IS Chris Redfield. |

CaliggyJack
06.09.22 | Fair.
But it's honestly worth a try, and at 20$ I'd say give it a chance.
I've had many people write this game off because of its rep, only to change after playing it when I pushed em too.
Not saying that'll happen to you, but man it's definitely worth a try. And Weaker Mode you get Post Game is a great stress reliever lmao |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.09.22 | Well for now I got 4 because everyone says it’s the GOAT and the 1 remake is gonna be part of new ps plus so I’ll play that too and then we’ll see from there |
ConcubinaryCode
06.09.22 | Wesker Mode for 0 is actually legit so I'll give him that. It's the absolute last pick I'd recommend though. REmake first and foremost. If you don't like action RE definitely don't bother with 5 or 6. I'd still say 4 just because it's a game everyone should play but know that with Remake 1&2 and re7 you've played most of the series highlights tbh.
Re3make plays like re2make but it's way more action oriented. CV and 0 follow that classic survival horror formula but it's also not as cohesively designed as the series best. Revelations kinda toes the line between the classic style and the modern style but it started as a 3ds title so bear that in mind. ReRev 1&2 are both kinda games you should pick up after you've played the ones you want but still crave more. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.09.22 | Thanks for all the info. I’ll probably start looking into the other mentioned titles after these two then. But I do plan on playing 3 remake and 8 when they go on sale for like 20 or below lol |
ConcubinaryCode
06.09.22 | I forgot 8! You'll probably like it too since it plays like re7 but expect a bit more of a cartoony game than 7. Some people think it kinda drops off toward the end too and you might be the type to find it that way as well. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.09.22 | Honestly they all kind of drop off towards the end so far lmao. Things just get so over the top |
ConcubinaryCode
06.09.22 | Yeah, it's basically a series staple by now. Hope you enjoy the games though! I think you'll really dig Re1 and am curious how you'll feel about re4 as well. |

06.09.22 | I’ll report back
Conceptually village looks so great to me |
Shemson
06.09.22 | If you’re getting old RE titles Pots and want atmosphere then definitely get the remake and Code Veronica X. Zero is cool but so frustrating if you make inventory mistakes as you can drop a necessary tool half way back across the map and have to retrace.
Village is batshit crazy and most of it’s a bit too action packed but it’s definitely a lot of fun and has some very scary set pieces as well as one of the best jump scares ever |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.10.22 | Thanks

This will take some getting used to |
Shemson
06.10.22 | I find the controls on 4 to be worse than the original games tank controls tbh

CaliggyJack

06.21.22 | Yep the arrival of the cultists is good, I love their creepy chanting as they slowly creep up to you, but it’s also the start of the downfall of the whole original series of games into action over mystery. |

Resi 1 you have Wesker, 2 Mad Scientist Birkin, 3 Nemesis, CVX batshit crazy twins - all excellent villains in their own way. 4 is dumb the more the castle expands and if you’ve stopped playing it’s no loss to leave it there and move on to better
Also… you better have saved the dog at the beginning… |

06.22.22 | That’s why it was such a nice touch, you hear a whining and fear what’s going on ‘don’t be hurting a dog’. Then you free him and feel good about yourself and forget all about it. Then first boss battle he rocks up to help you like a damn hero!
You checking another RE next mate? |
ConcubinaryCode
06.22.22 | "So re4 was dope until I lost interest in the castle at some point"
Was it the water room? That's a big hurdle for a lot of people. I know most people would say village is the best part, especially when it becomes nighttime but the castle has some really cool moments and monsters as well, it's the island part that always bums me out but you're like 80% done at that point.
"Also why is lord farquad the main villain"
Saddler is the main villian, Salazar is kinda the smarmy second antagonist that you talk shit to because he's pathetic by himself but kinda played for laughs because of it. His laugh is adorable, he sounds like he's playing an evil imp. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.22.22 | Yeah I’ll probably do remake next. Right now I’m playin that 2018 Spider-Man game
I do t think I’ve hit a water room. I cleared the sewers and then fought like a million cult dudes while homegirl flipped some switches and then I was like “eh..” |
ConcubinaryCode
06.23.22 | Yeah, water room is right before the sewers where you have to turn the crank in the middle then protect Ashley while she turns two cranks. You sound like you just finished the section where you play as Ashley so you're halfway through the castle section if that's the case. The game kinda lulls around there but if you do return to it you can get a magnum right after you finish the Ashley segment. |
Rawmeeth38
06.23.22 | 2 remake> |
ConcubinaryCode
06.23.22 | Ye, 2 remake is my favorite just below re4. My only real complaint is scenario B kinda sucks because they moved that scenarios highlight to make for a better scenario a. It's more of a nitpick than anything else though.

06.23.22 | I've been replaying all the Silent Hill games with my gf because she hasn't seen them. I recently started RE4 because she hadn't seen that either and she's pretty much like 'this is cool but it's cheesy over the top action, play more Silent Hill because it's way more interesting' and it's really gotten into my head. I love RE5 but it's even cheesier, are all the Resident Evil games just stupid action games?:/ RE6 is one of the shittiest action games I've ever played. I haven't played 4 in a long time and the horror aspect seems to be extremely lacking when played directly after a masterpiece like SH2, and I already know RE5 is even worse when it comes to this issue of being too silly |

06.23.22 | Yeah SH was always the better option for an actual horror experience, re1 arguably has the closest you can get to an actual horror experience mostly through the atmosphere and exploring aspect but even then it's still a really silly game underneath it all.people always overblow the horror aspect for RE, it's more fun to just think of them as monster games where you get cool guns imo.
And pots you lose Ashley a few times throughout the game but I wanna say you're around halfway through the castle. 3-2 at the earliest if you haven't done the garden maze yet. |

06.23.22 | Yo foxblood, you’ve just reminded me I never played Silent Hill games and I’m a huge old school RE fan from when they were more horror based. I’ve just seen the SH 2 and 3 remasters are £25. Gonna get on it when I have time!
Resident Evil 4 was the first to become more action oriented, I’d reckon the mrs would enjoy watching you work your way around the mansion in RE1! |

06.23.22 | big warning, I've played those remasters they are notoriously totally garbage ports. Konami LOST the source code for SH2 and 3, so the small developer doing the ports had to improvise a bit. the lighting, fog, graphics, are all fucked up looking and look worse than the ps2 versions. they had to re-do all the voice acting as well. The best versions of the games are SH2 on ps2 and SH3 on PC. |

06.23.22 | Thanks mate, I’m gonna check it anyway, I’ve heard the vibe and music is unreal so gotta give it a go. Might do a list about it here and I always like hearing other people experiencing stuff I love for the first time
Yes mate you have to play RE1 remake it’s absolutely fantastic once you get over the old fashioned controls and fixed cams. |
