Listening To Sowing's Top 100 Songs

Gonna listen to Sowing's list and give my thoughts on the songs List: https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=276983&listid=199438
1Alien Ant Farm
TruANT

"S.S. Recognize"
I have never heard of this band in my life and I hate this. The guitar work is fine, pretty generic, but the vocals are so annoying wow, especially on the chorus. Sort of teeters the line between nu-metal and post-hardcore? The longer this song went on the more I hated it.
2Let's Eat Grandma
I'm All Ears

"Donnie Darko"
I actually know this song and I loved this song back when it came out, but haven't listened to it in a few years. I forgot how beautiful that intro instrumental is and just the overall beginning atmosphere. When the beat drops tho... fuck yeah, pure euphoria, and those synths... The wall of sound at about 8 minutes in makes up for how long the song is. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. I need to listen to their newest album.
3Lord Huron
Long Lost

"Long Lost"
Umm this is pretty, can't really tell what he's singing about, but the baroque pop influences I quite dig. The strings are a nice touch and the production is quite nice, I don't think I'm in love with it as a whole, but could be a nice addition to an atmospheric folk playlist?
4The Airborne Toxic Event
The Airborne Toxic Event

"Sometime Around Midnight"
Another band I have never heard of. The orchestral intro made me think it was going to be some post-rock song. No it turns into this slower paced, Interpol-esque song, that builds and builds, until the vocalist starts belting and the guitars get loud... and I really love it. Scratches that 2000s indie rock itch that I always have.
5Nirvana
Nevermind

"Smells Like Teen Spirit"
I mean this is a classic. I'm kind of shocked Sowing would include it since it's such an OBVIOUS pick, but yeah song is a certified banger. It's loud, it's melodic, it's catchy, and it's everything you want from grunge. I've always preferred All Apologies for my favorite Nirvana song.
6Lana Del Rey
Norman Fucking Rockwell!

"Venice Bitch"
Have not listened to NFR in a while and this song always brings me back 2019, the before times. Beautiful, lush, ethereal, soothing, and definitely one of her best songs, that long instrumental break in the middle of the song was wild in a Lana song. However, there are about 3 songs on the album I would put higher than this (The Greatest, Cinnamon Girl, Norman Fucking Rockwell) but fuck you, now I need to listen to the whole album today.
7My Chemical Romance
The Black Parade

"Welcome To the Black Parade"
Ok so now I'm being taken back to watching MTV, with my long flippy middle school hair, seeing Gerard with blonde ass hair march with a bunch of people dressed in black and thinking "wow they're so weird." I honestly haven't heard this since back then and it's a lot better than I remember. It is so ridiculously over the top, but I love it, and the energy is infectious as fuck. Might also need to listen to this album.
8MGMT
Oracular Spectacular

"Time To Pretend"
I will start off by saying that I think this song would be in my top 25 of all time. It's such a perfectly catchy pop song, yet very existential, very nostalgic, full of noise, feels very drug fueled, and just hits a bit too hard as I'm about to turn 30 this year fuck.
9Meat Loaf
Bat Out of Hell

"You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)"
Jesus what am I listening to, why does he say "throat" so sexually, why is the intro SO horny!? The only song from these guys I've ever heard is the one about the car sex, but I didn't realize that was like their whole thing. Anyway, it's a... fine song. Kind of fun, bombastic like the car sex one, but it just sounds like a watered down Queen song and way too cheesy. Can't believe you put this above most of the songs before this.
10Muse
Black Holes & Revelations

"Knights of Cydonia"
Another bombastic, epic sounding song huh? I've never cared to listen to Muse and this is not helping. The singer's voice is pretty damn annoying to me. It just feels like they were influenced by bands in the 70s and 80s, but never can quite get that same level of greatness. The guitars are fun, I guess. Not an awful song, but no thanks.
11Yellowcard
When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes

"Be The Young"
I have a feeling I'm going to hear a lot of pop punk on this list huh... umm I used to listen to Yellowcard back in the early 2000s, but didn't know they kept making music. This song is pretty standard pop punk to me, it's catchy, melodic, trying to be anthemic, trying to be epic, but just really boring. Have no desire to listen to more from them.
12Styx
Pieces of Eight

"Renegade"
Well this is pretty fun! Never heard of the band, but definitely sounds like something an older person would play in their car. Pretty classic sounding hard rock, love the synths, love the energy, and love how groovy it is. Can't say I'd put it above some of the others, but don't mind hearing it.
13Lorde
Melodrama

"Hard Feelings/Loveless"
I meaaaaaaaaaaaaaan this is one of Lorde's best songs and one of the best songs of the past decade. As soon as it starts you can tell it's going to be something special. The cool, heavy synths and echoing feedback create this amazing atmosphere for the first part of the song as Lorde spills hard truths about dating/love. The best part is when the song breaks down into distorted synths and high pitched noises, before transitioning into the iconic "Loveless" part. I could listen to this on repeat.
14The Republic of Wolves
shrine

"Birdless Cage"
Sowing you're going to introduce me to so much emo music by the end of this. It's pretty great though, I do love that slow build up shit sometimes, with the guitar work here making a sort of a hypnotic effect the entire time, before leading into a repeating outro, giving very much Brand New. I dig it.
15Andrew Bird
Break It Yourself

"Hole in the Ocean Floor"
People still listened to him after The Mysterious Production of Eggs? This song has a very pretty intro, with the plucking and the whistle and the strings, though I feel like that was the best part of it. Once he starts singing, it's fine, but holy shit this goes on for too long. I feel like it needed something more than just him cooing for 5 minutes, some kind of dramatic switch up or something idk. Not bad, but did not need to be 8 minutes long.
16Joanna Newsom
Divers

"Anecdotes"
I missed this earlier in the list because I was going off the Spotify playlist, but yes yes what a beautiful, magical song. Brings me right back to 2015 when I was still in college and would blast this album on long drives by myself. It is definitely top 3 on the album, the way Joanna sings "Anecdotes cannot say what time may dooooooo" is permanently ingrained into my head, and the beautiful lush strings that accommodate her fairy like singing only add to the beauty.
17Iron And Wine
The Shepherd's Dog

"Flightless Bird, American Mouth"
I used to listen to Endless Numbered Days a lot, but never this album. Safe to say, I'm glad I did not. This song really does nothing for me, I guess it's pretty atmospheric, but I don't really like his singing here, I like it better when he's not drawing out syllables for so long. The instrumentation is fine, but does not grab my attention how I feel like it should.
18Straylight Run
Straylight Run

"Existentialism on Prom Night"
Oh as soon as this song started with that deep piano I could tell it was going to be moody and holy shit this feels so cheesy. I actually quite like the mix of drums and piano, but cannot stand the vocals. They just remind me of shitty pop punk bands from 2000s, the slower moments especially, and I can't get past that. I feel like I'll see that a lot on this list...
19Kanye West
Yeezus

"Black Skinhead"
Fuuuuuuck I miss this Kanye. This was his last really great album imo, I do not like Pablo or Kids See Ghosts, and this song is so fucking good and wild. That deep bass that hits when the chorus starts and then just starts hammering is so hype you can't sit still. His weird yelling in the refrain, and throughout the song, works way better than it should, just because of how crazy the production is. This might be one of the greatest pump up songs of all time and he knew definitely knew that.
20Laura Stevenson
Wheel

"L-Dopa"
Ok ok I know it's like Sputnik sin to not listen to her, but I never listen to her. I'm pretty sure I jammed this album once, but couldn't remember anything from it. Anyway, this song has me intrigued, it's quite pretty. Her voice is a lovely mix of soothing and powerful, while the bombastic production adds to the drama of it all. The strings are a nice touch as well, adding an atmospheric element and I'm quite curious what that outro leads to...
21Converge
Jane Doe

"Jane Doe"
I have not listened to this album in ages! I always appreciated the technical aspects of it, but just could not get into the vocals, not for me. Listening to this song, I feel the same way. It's a great song, but would not draw me back because I cannot connect with it and I love music I can connect to. I appreciate the handiwork of the instrumentals, but yeah.
22The Weeknd
Trilogy

"House of Balloons / Glass Table Girls"
The song that got me into Abel and still one of his very best. It's drug fueled R&B epic with a fantastic breakdown, what is not to love? This was a time when he wasn't big at all and did not focus on trying to make radio hits and this would never be one. It's too dark, moody, even if that snare makes your body want to move.
23Bad Books
III

"Army"
Sowing you're killing me with these long ass songs back to back like this. This one is too damn slow to be this long, my god. It feels like an interlude for the first 5 minutes until some distortion kicks in, but still doesn't do much with the instruments. On top of that it's a bit too whiny for me and the vocals are so nasally, I don't think I can fuck with this.
24D'Angelo
Black Messiah

"The Charade"
Fuck yeah, this is an amazing album. I think I'd pick Ain't That Easy as my favorite from it, but this is also an amazing song. The murkiness and mumbling of the vocals just adds to the atmosphere, while the rock aesthetics make it noisy and psychedelic. It's a rhythmic, hypnotic and soulful trip of a song.
25Primus
Sailing the Seas of Cheese

"Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers"
I've heard of Primus before, but actually never listened to them. However, this is fun as fuck. I couldn't tell you what the lyrics are about, something interstate something unions, but really the funky heavy guitars are what make me like this. It's all quite groovy and still very much rock music. The vocals are very quirky and sung in an interesting way, but work well.
