Roadburn 2022 Hits and Misses

So with my expectations as low as they have ever been going into my one week sanctuary of Roadburn Festival in Holland due to (for me) a less than impressive line up as well as a few newer rooms that I feel don't have the special vibe that the other have/had and an excuse of putting everything under the banner of 'Redifining Heavy' (urgh) giving you an excuse to just call anything you want heavy as your just 'Redefining' after all. I dunno. I just felt this could be the last one. Many of us did. What transpired was a week of utter joy and insane sets that I enjoyed it as much as any I ever have. Bumping into Mr Roadburn on the day before the beginning who said 'Ive got some good news Deez' and telling me they have addressed my issues with the newer rooms I was given some major hopium going in and after just one day I knew I had been foolish to not completely trust the Roadburn Festival, Their vision, goals and community at this point. I wont do that again. After 2 long years of Covid it was amazing to be there with 4000 like minded souls and my own Roadburn crew that only see each other once a year. A tremendous week and timely reminder of the importance in my life of live music and teh underground community in which I share this love with. Until next year. x Heres my top 10
11Cloud Rat
Do Not Let Me off the Cliff

Cloud Rats Electro set sucked so much balls it was almost laughable. It started pretty solid but soon turned into electro ballads almost. Knew their 'normal' set would make up for it and it was a rager.
10Senyawa
Bronshoj (Puncak)

Crazy Indonesians doing their experimemtal Indonesian madness. Like a South East asian Mike Pattton backed by drone on some instruments you don't know or some shit. I was in that middle zone of coming down of the mushrooms, boozed up and not knowing what to do next so this crazyness was a nice reflection on how my mind was actually feeling at this point. Was hoping those African kids DUMA would bring me out of it but ended up my biggest disappointment.
9Grey Aura
1: Gelige, traumatische zielsverrukking

Was made up that a Secret show from these Dutch experimental 'Black' metal guys was announce. I LOVED last years album and despite starting off pretty fierce they did hit some of that quirky, avant garde, almost punk tinged stuff towards the end of the set. Great stuff.
8Lingua Ignota
SINNER GET READY

Seen Kristin a number of times and she is always phenomenal but now with her less aggressive new record comes a less hectic new stage show but no less emotionally impactful. Especially on that big stage with the religious visuals behind her. The womans a star.
7The Bug
Fire

Just what was needed after a day of heavy guitar music some absolutely filthy dub with a few MC's rabbitting absolute garbage. Was like being at an old dubstep night or something. A surprise, but it shouldn't have been. The Bug killed it. Got kids in black metal shirts bouncing to songs about the Mandem. Glorious.
6Warhorse (USA)
As Heaven Turns to Ash

A festival founded on its doom and stoner was relatively short in comparison this year but this set was the most old school, Quintessential Roadburn set. They were so happy to be there clearly as they barely play anymore apart from these bigger shows I think and along with many faces I knew personally I could recognise so many familiar faces vibing out to Warhorse as if that was was exactly what they needed. Probably high as fk chasing any fuzzy riff down all weekend. It is the Netherlands after all.
5Big|Brave
Ardor

Opened the first Roadburn since 2019 in the room I previously hated that now felt like a REAL Roadburn venue and levelled the place. Robin could barely speak but could still bellow across that entire hall. I waled out of a Big Brave set here years ago as it was unbearably hot so was majorly happy to see the finally and worth every second.
4Liturgy
H.A.Q.Q.

Yeah so I like some Liturgy and some I can do without but was definitely gonna see them when playing this in Full as it it my fave and then also doing the last record with full Chamber Ensemble and which was so ridiculously pretentious it was absolutely dope in its glorious none sense. The H.A.Q.Q set I WAS on shrooms though so I could have enjoyed anything at that point maybe. New drummer GOES.
340 Watt Sun
Perfect Light

Patrick and the boys may just have made me shed a tear ya know? Not for the first time mind you and nothing compared to the inner tears I cried finding out I missed his secret solo set i a Tiny Jazz club in Town. Seriously I will think about that for the rest of my life. Thats what I do.
2Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath

Thou's final secret set of Black Sabbath covers in a smaller room was right up there too. After missing half of their secret shows because I was not checking my phone for updates every 20 mins I wasn't missing this for the world and man...Thou playing Sabbath riffs was so so huge. The highlight of the entire weekend was Lingua Ignota joining then with Liam from Mizmor on drums and Andy Black on Guitar. Thats FOUR guitarist playing "Black Sabbath' Honestly wft.. It ended Roadburn the best way possible. Peeps smiling and having the time of their lives.

Luckily someone filmed this part.

1Mizmor and Thou
Myopia

A secret no more. The news of this collab was released on the day that we found out they would play that very night. With 3 guitars on that main stage it sounded absolutely massive and exactly how I wanted it to sound. Not too much Mizmor and not too much thou but a perfect meeting in the middle. Seeing Liam and Bryan both stood next to each other on the mic was surreal. Two extreme vocalists I love. Thou especially with 4 sets where the glue of this edition again. Copped that Vinyl six whole months before its released too. Suck it.
