Colliiiin
03.14.22 | If there's bands you think I should hear/haven't heard, hit me up with those recs. |
theBoneyKing
03.14.22 | Epic list brotha. Check Grivo if you haven’t, they’d fit here nicely. |
JKing92
03.14.22 | I'd say that Deftones kind of have elements of this in some of their songs (especially their more overtly Pumpkins-influenced tracks). |
Colliiiin
03.14.22 | Wow damn, Grivo is tight. Thanks mate.
Also agree about Deftones. They've had shoegaze elements since Around the Fur and have admitted to bands like Failure/Far/Hum being v influential on them. |
Senetrix666
03.14.22 | I saw Soul Blind open for Drug Church the other night and they definitely fit in this list. 2 of the members were literally wearing Ride and Helmet shirts. |
JohnnyoftheWell
03.14.22 | excellent list, would also rec Kraus, Coaltar of the Deepers and ig early Oceansize. maybe Supercar too, though idk if they're heavy enough
1 and 2 are most definitely 1 and 2
still need to check Failure and do the rest of Cave In (was pretty underwhelmed by Jupiter, but curious to see where their styles goes from there) |
botb
03.14.22 | FFS check that new Cloakroom |
Colliiiin
03.14.22 | Fkn love Oceansize. Will def check those other two, thanks.
For Failure I would start with one of the last two albums or Fantastic Planet. For Cave In, maybe see what you think of White Silence, it's a mix of most of the genres they've played over the years. |
Sunnyvale
03.14.22 | Sweet list, like this style a lot |
theBoneyKing
03.14.22 | Oh another OG one is Catherine Wheel, they were def one of the first to do more aggro gaze. |
JohnnyoftheWell
03.14.22 | "start with one of the last two albums or Fantastic Planet. For Cave In, maybe see what you think of White Silence"
ta, was weighing up whether to skip ahead to White Silence - guess that seconds it
and i second Catherine Wheel - only heard Chrome once, a few years ago, but that defs fit the bill. good record tbh, idk why i never stuck with it |
Colliiiin
03.14.22 | Ye for sure, Catherine Wheel are a classic band. |
Senetrix666
03.14.22 | white silence and PPB also have the perfect blend between brodsky's cleans and caleb's screams. |
theBoneyKing
03.14.22 | Chrome is top 10 gaze, prob
Greet Death are my fave of the current crop doing this style, hyped for their new album |
Colliiiin
03.14.22 | Ye prob top gaze for me too. Also have dug all Greet Death's new singles.
@senetrix Definitely. Cave In are a pretty unique band for trying to get someone else into them aha. |
Aberf
03.14.22 | Good List, would recommend Planning for Burial - Below the House |
Senetrix666
03.14.22 | oh also A Place to Bury Strangers - Exploding Head is chocked full of bangers. |
heck
03.14.22 | Catherine Wheel |
Colliiiin
03.14.22 | Love the first Planning for Burial album, but it's the only one I've really spent time with. So I'll def have to give the other stuff a go.
Blind bought a copy of that Bury Strangers album on CD years ago, but it's been a minute since I've heard it. I do dig it tho. |
RogueNine
03.14.22 | Chrome Neon Jesus?!?
That album's gotta be on this list. By Teenage Wrist of course. |
FigNewtns
03.14.22 | saw both greet death and nothing not too long ago. both really good live. i wish nothing played more off of guilty of everything though, and especially chlorofoam. listen to diiv - deceiver if you haven't already |
FigNewtns
03.14.22 | lot off of this list i've not heard, good shit |

03.14.22 | fuck yes best list
here's a few more goodies that haven't been mentioned yet:
mondaze, iress, modern color, heavenward |
Colliiiin
03.14.22 | Love Jesu and most of Broadrick’s stuff, just didn’t come to me that they do fit the list.
Don’t really dig Teenage Wrist, but could try again.
Thanks for the recs @mixtape. Love Swirlies and Catherine Wheel. Also like Holy Fawn, Ovlov and Calm (anything Duster associated really). |
loveisamixtape
03.14.22 | for sure 💯 |
rufinthefury
03.14.22 | Turnover lol |
rufinthefury
03.14.22 | no but actually I was gonna rec Teenage Wrist but damn.
surprised no one has said Deafheaven yet. Preoccupations is solidly post-punk but their New Material album actually kinda scratches the heavy shoegaze itch.
Whirr and White Reaper are also obvious picks.
|
Snake.
03.14.22 | props for 25
check denison marrs you can be the first one to add them to the db |
Colliiiin
03.14.22 | Ye newest Deafheaven could easily fit in.
Preoccupations are pretty dope. Really like their last album. Saw them with Metz and FACS a couple months ago. They sounded great live. Obv Metz was the highlight tho. |
ShadowRemains
03.14.22 | i need more of this |
Cormano
03.14.22 | laughs at the mention of turnover and then recs new defheaven |
Cormano
03.14.22 | sick list, still need to get on a lot of these |
rufinthefury
03.14.22 | Turnover is great but they are not heavy in the slightest which is why it was a joke rec |
loveisamixtape
03.14.22 | deafheaven equally as much of a joke rec imo |
Scoot
03.15.22 | grivo are dope |
Scoot
03.15.22 | trau choi made a pretty sweet ep

Grungil
03.15.22 | Excelent list. I was familiar with Hum, Shiner and Slow Crush so i ill definately explore some other bands too. |
cloakanddagger
03.15.22 | List rules, I like most of the bands on here.
I'd recommend Holy Fawn and Loathe, although Loathe might be a bit too metalcore for a list like this but songs like Two-Way Mirror, Screaming and Is It Really You are great heavy gaze songs. |
constantchange
04.05.22 | Frodus - AWWOWITS
Million Dead - A Song To Ruin
maybe some Chavez
next few aren't in sputnik's database:
The Stella Link- Mystic Jaguar... Attack!
thistle - The Small Hours
Nemo - In Stereo
---
Also would put Fantastic Planet on there, and pretty much every Shiner / TLAT release lol |
GhandhiLion
04.05.22 | Wtf is a grunge? It's 1988 |
constantchange
04.09.22 | went through a bunch of these that I hadn't heard and sounded interesting by your descriptions... one that sticks out as particularly good is this Castor album. Filing under "knocky". Thanks for this list! |
SitarHero
04.09.22 | Swervedriver - Mezcal Head (shoegaze+grunge contemporaries of Hum and Failure yet somehow even more underrated)
Teenage Wrist - Chrome Neon Jesus (probably hits the shoegaze, grunge, AND emo tags)
Higher Power - 27 Miles Underwater (shoegaze and grunge on a foundation of hardcore and its all fun) |
Ryus
04.09.22 | swervedriver is the best of these type of bands |
DDDeftoneDDD
04.09.22 | In the Future... is best Failure
btw lol at ghandi's anti grunge struggle. Get a grip, aknoweledge and give it up bruh. |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.09.22 | swervedriver is good and not at all underrated
grip, aknoweledge and give it up bruh.
|
SitarHero
04.09.22 | Also, I recently saw a young local band called Tzarina play and they kicked all kinds of ass. Basically post hardcore, but with some metal riffs, shoegazy textures, and sweet AiC type vocal harmonies. No albums yet but they have a bunch of singles out.

https://tzarina.bandcamp.com/ |
Sinternet
04.09.22 | emo grunge like superheaven and basement is kinda rad on occasion |
constantchange
04.09.22 | Swervedriver is on here lol
Good call on this Tzarina band though, this is sick |
GhandhiLion
04.09.22 | But what if the late 80s early 90s grunge is the real grunge ( mudhoney, green river, bleach, Skin Yard etc) and most of what came after was shoehorned in to sell records and clothes to teenagers? hmmm these are the thoughts I like to keep |
SitarHero
04.09.22 | "Swervedriver is on here lol
Good call on this Tzarina band though, this is sick"
Lol my bad. I must've missed Swervedriver when I scrolled through the list. And yeah those Tzarina guys were super impressive live especially for a local band that just formed during the pandemic. I don't think their recordings even fully do them justice. |
DavidYowi
04.09.22 | Bookmarked. Ty for the list |
theBoneyKing
06.26.22 | Been vibin this kinda shit recently, should check more from this list. |
Relinquished
