| Being Emeritus and Fav Songs
Hello sputfriends: This list is to mark a few different things. Firstly, over the past few months I’ve been posting the lists I made during Covid before I finally got a full time job a few months back. This is the last one, just a collection of my current top 100 favorite songs. The bottom 30-50 is more of a loosely ranked or unranked rotation, and the top 50 is more set in stone. This list is really just representative of what I love about music, sounds the best to my ears, and/or has the most emotional impact. Many of these artists and bands I discovered thanks to this site, which I’m approaching 10 years(!) on and 20,000 comments made since I first created my account in 2012. Time sure flies. I’m going to be around less, but feel free to still say hi or rec something in my shoutbox because I’ll be on the site sometimes, mainly to rate new albums and to drop the occasional comment on the reviews site. I will now ascend to a higher plane of existence known as Emeritus. Much love. | | 1 | | Porcupine Tree Deadwing

03.06.22 | Thanks guys, and yes Alex that was a cool surprise.
I always liked Sigur Ros well enough, but they really spoke to me starting a few years ago and I became obsessed. One of the all time greats. Same with David Bowie shortly after he died: I started doing a deep dive in his discography and loved it so much that he ended up being my most played artists or band of the whole year according to Last.fm. | dedex
03.07.22 | Super dope man | TheSpaceMan
03.08.22 | thanks for the reviews and supporting the site man. list is the most sputnik taste ive ever seen though lol | Dedes
03.08.22 | And yet the list fucking slaps
Thanks for all your contributions brother. Your reviews were among the first I ever saw when I joined this site. | TalonsOfFire
03.08.22 | It’s been a pleasure, and ha guess I’ve found the right site then. But even though I discovered many bands on sput, I actually was a fan of many sputcore bands before, like Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Tool, Radiohead, The National, Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, and pretty much all the classic prog rock bands. Mostly thanks to my very musically knowledgeable and prog fan dad, friends, and Wikipedia. | Masochist
03.09.22 | Porcupine Tree's best song at #1. Who are you, doesn't matter, I love you.
Thoughts on their new album/released songs?
Also, that Cocteau Twins song ("Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires") is severely underrated, but man is it one of the best Dream Pop songs of all time. | Storm In A Teacup
03.09.22 | Congrats talons! | TalonsOfFire
03.09.22 | Thanks!
Foxes was my last entry on this list actually, it's just gorgeous. I love everything about it and is pretty much the quintessential dream pop song for me, or that album's t/t.
Arriving Somewhere is like a religious experience every time I listen to it haha. The new PT songs are great, sounding to me like a mix of Wilsons' solo albums and The Incident. Love the bass lines too. I'm sure the others songs will have some more surprises. I like that there are three other 7-9 minute long songs in the track list besides just Harridan. | Dewinged
03.09.22 | Good riddance Talons, I'll follow you to that other plane of existence some time in the future. Thanks for all the words. | TalonsOfFire
03.09.22 | Yes, I feel more enlightened by the day. | CycleMotion
03.10.22 | This list is so good, and it's somehow audiophile list too 😂👍 | TalonsOfFire
03.10.22 | You mean cause these are well produced songs? | Trifolium
03.10.22 | Many of the Greats are here 💞
Super cool Ulver picks and 67 is their best song. | ashcrash9
03.10.22 | I'd barely even know where to begin leaving things off a 100 favorite songs of all time list so props for following through with it, additional props for the picks being so great, and superlative props for the job news and ascending to Emeritus. You a real one [3]. Hope to still see you around a bit and best of luck with your future endeavors not humoring bait comments on Sputnik Music Dot Com (but you can always fall back down that rabbit hole!) | TalonsOfFire
03.11.22 | Yes and thx! I'll still be around sometimes for sure. | ChoccyPhilly
03.12.22 | Damn i had no idea Bleak is your favourite song of the album. Thought I was totally alone with that sentiment on this site. Also had no idea arriving somewhere is one of your favourite songs of all time! Was this always the case or just recently?
Also, super surprised Crucify Me isn't on the list. Know you love that song | TalonsOfFire
03.13.22 | Arriving has always been my fav PT song. Almost anything in the top like 22 has been my #1 song at some point haha. And I decided earlier this year that Bleak is ultimate Opeth for me. 3:10-8:23 especially is like one of the greatest 5 minutes of music I’ve ever heard. I haven’t listened to BMtH or any metalcore in forever, but yeah Crucify Me is their best song. | IsisScript80
03.13.22 | Congratulations. And very nice list. | TalonsOfFire
03.15.22 | Thanks!
Just realized that All I Need by Radiohead isn’t on here! Will edit soon to fix that. Jigsaw Falling into Place, Nude, and 15 Step would all be close to making this list too. | TalonsOfFire
07.21.25 | Added Spanish Sahara and a couple Sabbath songs to the honorable mentions. |
