JohnnyoftheWell 01.01.22	WOW topical! here is some fresh pasta God, this is depressing. I mean, it isn't really depressing, but it certainly isn't much good. When people say "this is depressing", are they ever really depressed by it? Does the continued success of The X-Factor really produce fits of anomie, do the Facebook updates of their friends send them to bed for a week? Even the election result last year didn't really make me depressed. True, on the morning after the count I sat in bed and cried, but that was more disbelieving hysteria than real sorrow, and anyway I had been drinking quite heavily. This isn't depressing because depression doesn't work that way, does it. It isn't an emotion conjured up by circumstance, it's more like a personality trait, or perhaps a physical characteristic, like being good with animals or having large feet. Some even say that depression is not incompatible with happiness. Somebody tells a joke, or pays you a compliment, and you laugh and feel happy but it doesn't make the depression stop any more than it makes your feet shrink. Perhaps they are right, or perhaps they are confusing depression with somthing else, like dissatisfaction or irritability. Anyway, I'm pretty sure it isn't possible to be happy while listening to this record, which is how you know it isn't making you depressed. Something else must be going on. I think it is sadness at the thought that for three months in 1998 everybody you knew listened to this, but listening to it now cannot bring back the feeling of being 19, because it is tired and worn out and so unambitious - a four to the floor beat, an ironic vocal sample, a James Bond hook - and at 19 you were neither tired nor worn out nor unambitious. Listening to it is like walking past your old school - it looks different and the same (have they done building work or are you just taller?) and you expect to feel something but all you really feel is "yeah, I used to come here." I don't miss being 19 - I hadn't any money and I made some bad choices and I spent altogether too much time fostering an image of unattainable mystery and not enough taking drugs and fucking strangers - but I miss having all that energy, and I miss the limitless supply of anger (though I wish it had come with a volume control). What's the opposite of nostalgia? God, this isn't depressing.

Maybe I didn't give it long enough, or maybe they are just not very memorable. This song is good, but doesn't make me want to listen to the rest of the album. Devin Townsend is such a genreblender creativ peacock for albums I know I will never listen to that I sometimes forget he knows how to write songs. this is a good song and agreed on the above, think the nu/alt-metal overtones on that main riff give it a strong centre of gravity 3.5 4. The Rational Academy - End of the Year: lmfao this album's rym page is hilarious, literally just doof and anat upvoting and a handful of e-ghosts tanking that avg. The song's pretty cool I guess; their tones are the high point, noise is fun but didn't really feel like it was in dialogue with the rest of the song, vocalist hasn't found his place in this mix, chords/melodies feel v derivative of Sonic Nurse-era SY with a noizynoizy washout, but I like that album so I guess it can have a 3.2/5

Acoustic Ladyland - Living With A Tiger: the LINK didn't WORK eg can't you do ANYTHING right ugh- oh actually this is really fun, well done! Does the sax overstay its welcome? idk, i am not weak! 3.4 8. Knapsack - Katherine The Grateful: knew without looking that this was a Sloth song 3 seconds in lol. Hate to be an Ars, but I feel it lacks character hmm - but not energy! or passion! can you have passion without character. 3.2 9. Spellling - Little Deer: I remember peeping the first three songs of this album and "ummmmm meh nope"ing them at almost exactly the same time this got picked for the list. Enjoying it a little more this time and appreciating how the arrangement is probably very good, but the whole thing still feels soulless and willfully artsy in a glossy, overly pristine way that I majorly do not vibe with when it comes in anything close to baroque packaging; if Weyes Blood, for the most part, couldn't do it for me, Spellling sure as hell ain't gonna. Vocalist still reminds me of early days Allison Goldfrapp (on such songs as the far superior "Deer Stop" hawww) minus all the sexiness plus a circus megaphone that she sometimes forgets she's whispering into. 2.6 10. Eartheater - Faith Consuming Hope: excellent. I feel this would hit harder with the benefit of all but one song of an album behind it. May investigate. 4

Devin Townsend - Seventh Wave - Okay Devin let's go, this is the song that will make me finally stop resisting your music, let's go. I just don't think I like the way he sings at all, and this song so far has kinda showcased it, it feels like something I'd hear on alt-rock/metal radio stations that still play Theory of a Deadman. Like this is way better than that, but still it doesn't feel special. I actually quite like the chorus and the synths a ton, but this is doing nothing for me. I wish I could dig this so much more. 2.8 4. End of the Year - The Rational Academy - This one is a little more my speed. Fuzzy and sloppy guitar, dreamy vocals, melancholic mood, and a wonderful noisey bridge. I quite enjoy this one, feels like a really good song I'll forget about and then revisit and be equally impressed. 3.6 5. Lightning Bug - The Return - Cute. Nol is correct about the instrumentation but I feel it never quite gets a punchy enough moment that the best Bond themes have (not that this is a Bond theme but ynwim). All the shifts don't quite come together for me, although it's not bad. 3.4

Janelle Monae - BaBopByeYa: Janelle Monae has never grabbed me will this song change things it is 9 minutes long it had better. her voice suits this style well, nice arrangement nice noir mmmokay promising. is that a midway twist or a midway meander. agreed with fogza that it's engaging moment to moment but doesn't really rise above the sum of decent parts, or whatever. good 3.4 31. mewithoutYou - Rainbow Signs: I don't love listening to this song in isolation bc Pale Horses is the greatest album ever but it is not the greatest song ever. Or is it? No, it's not, it needs that album and its cryptic headache and longform greyscale haze behind it along with all the weight of that apocalyptic metaphor (now no longer just metaphor!) and parental baggage as developed so messily and wonderfully elsewhere, but on its own it's still pretty good fire n brimstone i guess. 5 obviously.

It's murky, it's insipid, it's background noise. 2.5/5 "An Introduction to the Album" Oh wow, it's the worst vocals of all time, cool. Okay, I'm being dramatic, but I hate this style so much. Dude's gonna hurt his throat with all that ugly singing. Guitar part's catchy? 1.7/5 "Cockeyed Lowlife of the Highlands" Cool riff. Not feeling the vocals, but they might as well be amazing compared to the last song. The music rules, but dammit those vocals. It's a no from m... a good fake-out ending? Wow okay, +.1 for that. 2.9/5 "Fix My Life" Glitchy, and fun. I like the saxophone. The vocalizations are cool too and the drums. Very likable song and I would probably love the party this song would belong at. 3.8/5 "Eyesore" Damn this is indie as FUCK. This is like the kind of indie that was made by people who love Lou Reed, but also don't wanna sound TOO much like him. I respect that and this is good for sure. Don't kill me, but this is also kinda like messier Foxygen. 4.1/5

I almost got turned off by the angry bit at the end but when I noticed his deft pacing and intonation it fell into place. Excellent song. 4.5
fogza 01.31.22	I realised today is the last day of Jan SOTD (aside from gathering any last ratings) and I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for supplying recs, and a special thanks to those who also played along with the daily rating. I find SOTD very fun and I am not one of the most visible users on Sput (and am very bad at joining stuff) so I'm delighted that we got all the recs filled and quite a few people rating and commenting on the songs - thanks for helping me out, and thanks for a great month everyone, you're all awesome.

That or the subtle nuance of the lyrics is lost on me (he spent a night with someone special and feels good, which is cool, but maybe warrants a couple more stanzas?). Anyway, the chorus fucks and those vocal harmonies tickle me 3.5 29. Anberlin - [*Fin] Expecting to hate this only knowing the band by rep. Hmmmm strong on closer vibes, which is cool, but weird out of context. Production falling flat for what they're shootin for here (particularly once the questionably necessary choir come and stand right in front of the band). Pretty great songwriting through and through though. 3.3 30. Janelle Monae - BaBopByeYa Um yeah I'm not gonna unpack this at all but yesyesyes 4.2 31. mewithoutYou - Rainbow Signs band is God, song is 4.5, probably a 5 if i understood like 50% of what the lyrics are on about

The rapping was meh, vocals were good. 3.4/5 "Utopian Warfare" Slow melodious intro distortion... yup metal. ROAR drum abuse. 2.3/5 "Ol' 55" Aw he sounds so young here. It's cute, but I don't like it as much as his grittier smoker voice stuff oddly enough. 3.6/5 "Fin" Almost 9 minutes of whiny alt? Ugh. This is so boring that I can't even find it annoying. 2/5 "BaBopByeYa" Finally, a song that actually deserves to be almost 9 minutes. Great horns nad strings with an underbelly of arty jazz lingering. Monae's voice is comforting, but the instrumentation is exciting. What a great closer to such an epic album. 4.8/5 "Rainbow Signs" WHAT ARE THOSE VOCALS? He sounds like he's mumbling into a ceramic teacup: one filled with tea. The floaty guitar is fine though. Now that there are some non-silly vocals he's just post-hardcore crying. Bad bad bad song. It's a shame because it's musically engaging. And the mumbling is back. I hate this. 1.6/5
