Song of the Day: January 2022

OPENERS OR CLOSERS - January is upon us, named after the Roman god Janus, that two faced duality guy. It's time of beginnings, or maybe it's a time of endings? The best of times, worst of times, blah blah. I figure everyone is feeling fairly hungover, so the theme is pretty simple: let's hear an album opener you love, or perhaps a closer if you're more of a looking back kinda person. I'm putting my faith in you not to go with the most obvious openers of all time, say, "Gimme Shelter" or something (even though that one would be pretty sweet, I'm not going to lie). So it doesn't have to be your fave. But it should be an opener. Or a closer. Of an album. You can say why you like it. Or not. Duality! I've updated the spreadsheet too for tracking purposes: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yo9Aj7t1IZwG41xFgX9kzIugIsVckENq5RnQace1WDw/edit#gid=1280683191

A Color of the Sky

January 5: JohnnyoftheWell

Lightning Bug - The Return (from A Color of the Sky)

don't have the inspo to torment anyone this round, so here is a lovely opener from a quaint album that no-one hated last yet

6Yves Tumor
Heaven To A Tortured Mind

January 6: dedex!

Yves Tumor - Gospel for a New Century

it is a really really good opener of an album that is aggressively ok

7Acoustic Ladyland
Living With A Tiger

January 7: Egarran

Acoustic Ladyland - Sport Mode

Never felt the need to listen to the rest of the album after this opener. Song is only 2:30 but it pretty much feels like an eternity.

8Knapsack
This Conversation Is Ending Starting Right Now

January 8: SlothCoreSam

Knapsack - Katherine the Grateful

I bought this album on CD when it first came out and absolutely loved this opener.
It still holds up well today even though it's from 1998.

14Frank Turner
Love, Ire & Song

January 14: Minushuman24

Frank Turner - I Knew Prufrock Before He Got Famous

Wait what am I thinking! Ted Leo reminded me of a similar type of opening song and is very minuscore. I definitely have not screamed along to this in my car too many times

15The Dear Hunter
Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise

January 15: rifkadm

Ouroboros by The Dear Hunter

Love the prompt this month! My rec is Ouroboros by The Dear Hunter. It's a closer to an album but it kind of works as a cliff hanger that leads into the story of their next album. Although it ends this album, it represents what's to come - it's all in the name. I'm a "snake eating it's own tail" kind of a person when it comes to beginnings and ends. ;)

January 16: deathofasalesman

"Blue Collar Love" by Starflyer 59

A slab of big, fat, meaty shoegaze that is somehow Christian? I'm not religious but this is my kinda vibe regardless.

Lyrics:
"She has taken it all / The feel / To fend for things you're just not
Now you're turning blue / The time I spent with you"

Perfect title for an opening track, perfect opening track, perfect song

18The Drones
Here Come the Lies

January 18: porcupinetheater

The Drones - Cockeyed Lowlife of the Highlands

Kicks off the “Here Come the Lies” record. In style too cuz it’s one of the most snarlin’ booty looseners in the rock’n’roll canon. Could’ve picked like 5 other Drones openers for this, too

19Melt Yourself Down
Melt Yourself Down

January 19: someone

Melt Yourself Down - Fix My Life

alright, blast-off. opener like no other. adrenaline and aggressive fun. kind of like a feverish powertrip somewhere down south by the beach, while your whole body is falling apart from all the toxic drugs you've ingested, but also you're in the middle of some confusing political uprising and bloodshed is commonplace

21Borknagar
True North

January 21: Vercetti (birthday 🎂)

Borknagar - Thunderous

It makes me think of the snowy landscape that's on the album cover. I guess that's just how norway looks but to me that fits in january quite well.

24Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra
Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light on Everything

January 24: Pheromone

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra - Fuck Off Get Free (For The Island Of Montreal)

Though they have probably changed their name by now - this song is one of the finest first time listening experiences I've ever had and completely sold me instantly on what is now my favourite GYBE & friends project. Awful vocals, apocalyptic, it is amazing, it is chills.

25Lone
Echolocations

January 25: normaloctagon

Lone - Coreshine Voodoo

best opener on any dance EP from the 2010s maybe. expecting a 2.8 avg on this please don't disappoint me

https://youtu.be/XTUIY_acbuY
26Esthero
Breath from Another

January 26: Demon of the Fall

Esthero - Breath From Another

idk it's warm and fuzzy but cool and nice, plus it seems suitable for this because a) low no. of ratings and b) it is not just an opener but the t/t too and c) it should appeal to like more than one user, maybe. So yeah please enjoy (or not).

Probably doing it wrong.

What better way to close an album with a song about the sky opening up for the closing of all closings? This is the rapture. This is the end.
