i did not read the book. after i watched the movie i read through the sparknotes of the each of the major books to get a sense of what i missed since i assumed the movie was a pretty poor interpretation of the book. nope, its just that the books are shit. paul's son i guess merges with a fucking sandworm and lives for 10000 years so im really not understanding why people are putting this franchise on a pedestal. just seems like a poorly written bootleg star wars with LOTR and star trek elements thrown in. please tell me what im missing. and no dont tell me to read the book i cant read i only write. |

it's funny because this is one of the main themes of the first dune book |
JefferyBigglestein2
10.26.21 | would man vs self be timothy chamelet's character having visions and joining the arabs cause honestly that's weak as fuck, he never really wrestled with his identity, it was kinda just handed to him because he had no other options once his dad got murked and he was abandoned in the wilderness. Whereas K struggles with his identity possibly being a biologically born replicant and has to deal with the moral and ethical dilemma's of his job. |
Keyblade
10.26.21 | *spoiler alert* nah it's more like timothy's character vs the growing awareness inside of him and having visions of the future where he'll become a genocidal tyrant and struggling with the choices he makes to either try to avoid that eventuality or embrace it |

thats...actually not bad. you know that reminds me of the original script of star wars where luke killed vader then put on his armor and took his place alongside the emperor (which im so glad they didnt do what a shit ending that would have been). except this feels a lot more natural and less forced for the sake of a plot twist. |

10.26.21 | On first watch with no knowledge of the book, it was a little confusing and dull for me. Loved the visuals and sound/music.

also the fact that the sequels had no connection with each other story wise, each movie pretty much undid the movie before it.

Actually, it was hard for me to understand half the dialogue because all the actors mumble and their delivering Frank Herbert gibberish. I'm glad i read the first half of the book before seeing because everything was much easier to understand
Technically speaking its fucking amazing though, cinematography, effects, score, sound - all incredible. I really enjoyed it for the most part minus the ending, the fight scene which dragged on for WAY too long and the abrupt and anti-climactic "this is just the beginning" cut to black. Movie was not without it's issues, and book readers will lament about what was left out to fill into 2.5 hours, but it told an interesting, easily-digestable story. I guess I was being unnecessarily superlative; my comment was more in the context of the esteem to which he’s consistently held among critics and cinephiles. He’s fine, I rescind my “hack” comment. But he, much like Christopher Nolan, is a director who has many audiences under the guise that his movies are deeper and more cavernous than they really are. My knee-jerk response is more of an involuntary reaction to how I feel about his clout in the cinesphere, I guess.
To my mind, great careers are defined by moments of excellence first, and consistency second. IMO he’s only really made one “great” film (ENEMY). I feel the same about Nolan, too—his one great film is MEMENTO. They’ve each made other good/decent films, but a majority of their filmographies is significantly lackluster in direct comparison to what critical appraisal would have you believe.
Don’t even get me started on Ingmar Bergman. |

which was how Paul was in the book no? MacLachlan was way too jovial in the Lynch film imo, but he grew into the role as the movie went on. by the end of the movie I think he was better than Timothee tho can't lie |

11.05.21 | Never read the book, and after watching both versions of the movie i can only conclude that the boring 1-dimensional plot-devices that pass as characters are probably the original material's fault. |
Keyblade
11.05.21 | yea, and to be fair he does into his own as a character more in the second half of the book. before that he's just a broody wooden character, which kind of makes sense given that he's the result of centuries of eugenics to produce such a person + a shitload of training + being the son of the duke. he shows almost no emotion, even after his dad died he didn't cry until much later. he's a human supercomputer with a fucked up background lol |
WalrusTusk
11.05.21 | ^agreed with Key. Paul in the novel is supposed to be almost robotic because that's what he was bred to be. Not saying that justifies him feeling one dimensional, just saying that it's not far off from the book.
i found most of the set design barren and minimalistic to a fault. Even the natural scenery is filmed with a shallow, paper-thin sensitivity. Someone on RYM put it best:
I'd say that the interior of the buildings seem to be sparse, but I kinda like that in contrast to other futuristic sci-fi movies which feel the need to cover every nook and cranny with flashing lights and buttons. But exterior shots are spectacular. |

11.05.21 | I didn't like it, and I prefer Lynch's movie. The latter is at least entertaining because of how bad it is, but the new film is offensively boring. Not a fan of the novels though, so maybe it'd be a better experience for someone into the series and lore. |

11.05.21 | >boring 1-dimensional plot-devices that pass as characters are probably the original material's fault.
*raises eyebrows in mild disgust*
Au contraire, the book is simply too rich to become a good movie.
It has so many different qualities and Villeneuve definitely went more towards sci-fi action and world building than character building and philosophy. |
rabidfish
11.05.21 | the new dune has less world-building than the Lynch version, fr.
like, i get that the old version has a 30 min. lore-dump, but at least there's something |
loveisamixtape
11.05.21 | it's strange to see so many people react to this as if there isn't going to be a sequel |
Egarran
11.05.21 | OK, I have seen like 5 mins of the Lynch version. Didn't feel like it. But yeah I love the book.
The sequel is confirmed, I believe. |
Keyblade
11.05.21 | the lynch version was hilarious in that it completely abandoned all of the world building by the halfway point and just flew through the different events with 0 explanation. I can see why Lynch hated it. I need to watch that fan edit |

11.05.21 | > paul is meant to be a shit character. |
rabidfish
11.05.21 | Don't wanna sound like i like the DL movie. I don't, it's very boring too. But at least i kinda got the story, the characters and has some interesting visuals and sets. The new one is not only bland and boring, but also makes you less invested in the characters and gives you less of an idea of the overarching political plot and world building. There's nothing to latch on to for me. |
Asdfp277
11.05.21 | was there a chance this movie was gonna be good |
JefferyBigglestein2
11.05.21 | i think i would have liked dune more if lord of the rings and star wars didnt exist. |
Keyblade
11.05.21 | I can't get over the dialogue in the lynch movie, it's so awkwardly delivered and very hard to follow and that's as someone who knows what they're saying. I can't imagine what it's like for people who don't. probably why critics hated it when it came out |
Egarran
11.05.21 | >The new one is not only bland and boring, but also makes you less invested in the characters and gives you less of an idea of the overarching political plot and world building.
Completely agree. You should read the book ^_^ |

11.05.21 | I guess sputnik should stick to music discussion |
Asdfp277
11.05.21 | i listen to music to hide the fact that i'm illiterate |
Egarran
11.05.21 | I wonder where these high standards come from. Sputnik discusses movies perfectly fine.
Music, on the other hand, lmao. It basically boils down to 'yeah but this other album is better'. |

11.05.21 | and this is why you're still stuck in the dark age

11.06.21 | "Still dying at a 2+ hour sci-fi flick being called Oscar bait lol"
Yeah I'm sry but if you think this is Oscar bait you're actually stupid |
Asdfp277
11.06.21 | do the oscars not pick long movies? thats discrimination! |
Meridiu5
11.07.21 | the director marketed the movie as "anti-exploitation of indigenous people and natural resources" so I think it does check the Oscar-bait box. |
Egarran
11.07.21 | movie is an exercise in liberal virtue signaling
yeah it's basically making muslims look good |
beefshoes
11.07.21 | The novel was written when significant chunks of the Middle East and Africa were either still colonies, or were struggling for independence through agonizing violence. That legacy clearly exists now, so reducing the film's legacy to virtue signaling makes your take sound like Tucker Carlson or Tim Pool. |

11.07.21 | I may not have been entirely serious |

11.07.21 | saw it yesterday, great film but too safe and easy. really disappointed in how they portrayed the harkonnens. but oh well I guess you gotta sacrifice your art to appeal to the least common denominator. |
Cygnatti
11.07.21 | it was good i liked it |
Keyblade
11.07.21 | 2000 miniseries still looks to have the best Harkonnens
this new movie made the baron seem like that new star wars villain |
JefferyBigglestein2
11.07.21 | mumbo jumbo |
Brabiz
11.07.21 | Tbh i thought the Baron in this was downright terrifying. His weird spider sex slave bugged the shit out of me |
Keyblade
11.07.21 | yea idk wtf that was, super creepy
they made him seem like some scary supervillain when he's just like a very cunning, very fat old pedophile |
Deathconscious
11.07.21 | You havent read the book though, therefore your opinion is discredited. And i am cooler than you because I read the book. |

11.07.21 | yea |
