1The Sisters of Mercy
First and Last and Always

"Marian" - just a really seductive song with a clever bridge. Sisters of Mercy aren't really compositionally interesting very often, they're all about teh mood and teh gothing, but what the guitar does here is an exception. also I've noticed the band's high points come when yr waiting for Eldritch to sing upregister, cos he can and it's heart attack stuff when he bothers to
2The Sisters of Mercy
Floodland

"Lucretia, My Reflection" - this is kinda the album where indie fans stop liking TSOM? Cos the band's dissolved and it's just Eldritch plus guest arrangers and bassists who don't make it onto the actual album? but Floodland's my fave because he develops his own songwriting style that aint as smothered in guitar; he keeps it consistent and boilerplate but just has a knack for adding one harmonic bit that justifies the whole tune, plus Floodland is generally sexier than FaLaA. I think Lucretia's the best pop tune on this cos the bassline is perfect
3The Sisters of Mercy
Body and Soul

"Afterhours" - big flangy pulsy cod-Morricone dirge. take my breath awaaaaaayeee
4The Sisters of Mercy
Floodland

"Emma" (bonus track) - smooth cover. just one among the corpus of tunes you didn't realize needed vampire vox but absolutely did
5The Sisters of Mercy
First and Last and Always

"Possession" - a little more cryptic than the rest of the album with its extra instrumentation and its skipped beat and the way the chorus is so elusive. just a manic and exhausting song from a band with the rep of not trying very hard, probably my fave pre-Floodland Sisters song overall
6The Sisters of Mercy
Vision Thing

"Doctor Jeep" - honestly I can't get into this album very much, just so rock'n'roll and swaddled in guitars, plus Eldritch's vox are more subdued, not really attempting anything out of the realm of comfort, which tanks Vision Thing for me as a whole. guess it's his lyrics album and I think Dr Jeep has the most evocative. plus it's three minutes shorter than More thank teh lord
7The Sisters of Mercy
Floodland

Never Land (extended) - massive oversized dirge where nothing happens
8The Sisters of Mercy
Alice / Floorshow

"Alice" - more overtly gawky and post-punk than their album sound, Alice feels all urgent, a gnice shake-up after Never Land. a lot of early stock local band goth rock sounds like this, you can imagine this going down badly in front of a bunch of rugby players who wanna hear covers of sweet child o' mine
9The Sisters of Mercy
Floodland

"Torch" (bonus) - big boy confirmed TSOM fans tend to cite this as their worst tune or something but frankly I've listened to The Mission and I know where the songwriting went
10The Sisters of Mercy
The Reptile House EP

"Lights" - another beautiful stressful dirge. i think this makes me an atypical fan for loving their slow stuff? so much of goth rock was fast and punk but frankly if you can keep the bpm under a hundred i'll wear velvet to it
11The Sisters of Mercy
Floodland

"Flood II" - ok, look, I just think Floodland's their best album by miles
12The Sisters of Mercy
First and Last and Always

"Walk Away" - I like singing along to this one. Walk Away's one of their most immediate tunes and the more you vamp it up the less it sounds like pub rock not to sound all judgmental
13The Sisters of Mercy
Floodland

"This Corrosion" - the icon. just such a dead-on emotion releaser to whisper and jerk yr body around to. the piercingly high banshee back up vox on this are incredible and their endless reprise pulls you into the circle. i mean look i'd love a remake of this where the guitar line was less crap but you just have to sing loud enough that you can't hear it, so This Corrosion is kinda a quest as well as a song innit
