09.06.21 | It’s a tricky one indeed. I don’t have the answer to that particular question. But I do feel disgusted about artists taking advantage of their status as idols. I haven’t been spinning any sun kil moon / mark kozelek since all of those rape allegations come to the light. (There are so many similar accounts of his m.o. that’s it’s ridiculous) But for me it’s mostly an emotional reaction cause I don’t want to support that kinda behaviour in any way. You could make a case for separating the person from the artists I guess. With Bob there is yet to emerge a pattern of such criminal behaviour, so I’ll wait and see what happens further down the road. It’s possible there is more to come but I sincerely hope that isn’t the case. |

09.06.21 | I don't believe in canceling stuff if it's good. Sometimes I even listen to Christian music. |

09.06.21 | I listen to burzum so... |
Gameofmetal
09.06.21 | Is there another word for this besides "canceling"? That's a much more specific term than how people use it. |
Shemson
09.06.21 | Yeah, you can just say ‘stop listening to’
I personally, have not listened to any Lostprophets for quite a few years even though Last Summer, Shinobi and Last Train Home were great songs from my childhood… |
SAPoodle
09.06.21 | I think it really comes down to a personal choice, what you're comfortable with and what not. I don't blame anyone for not listening to Sun Kil Moon anymore because Koz is a gigantic arsehole, but I still jam some Ghosts of the Great Highway every now and then because it's one of my favourite albums ever. On the flipside, there are certain bands I never got into (e.g. Lostprophets) who I will now avoid listening to as a result of accusations and crimes |
SAPoodle
09.06.21 | My personal take is that we should do whatever possible to avoid supporting scummy people, but in some instances the music is just too close to my heart to stop listening to it altogether. I will, however, avoid supporting those artists with my money. |
sonictheplumber
09.06.21 | i doubt i listen to any "good people." even kate bush probably called someone a homo once |
ghostalgeist
09.06.21 | "I will, however, avoid supporting those artists with my money." that's the best viewpoint to have on it imo |

09.06.21 | art is beyond morality. If it makes you feel better you can do whatever you want, but it's like taking penitence for enjoying something you shouldn't, it's guilt tripping yourself. I don't do that, personally. I'm sure i listen and enjoy music, movies, tv shows, comics and other content made by awful people or downright criminals. |
insomniac15
09.06.21 | You can just choose to not listen anymore the artist, or simply not care about him anymore and continue listening to the music. For example, I keep listening to Marilyn Manson, even though he isn't the nicest person in the industry.
But yeah, if you consider great artists throughout history, many had a lot of issues and made questionable choices. |

09.06.21 | Turns out one of my favorite musicians (Proscriptor) is a bit of a transphobe and misogynist. But he's from Texas, so I had already accepted that he was fucked up.
This makes it easier to still enjoy his music. |
Avagantamos
09.06.21 | I think what's most important is being a conscious consumer. be aware that an artist's words or actions are ill-favored; but if you love certain music, listen to your heart's content.
some of SpaceGhostPurrp's lyrics are appallingly misogynistic or homophobic, but his production unique production style keeps me coming back, and I'm able to enjoy it knowing that what he's sayin isn't actually okay. |

09.06.21 | I'm not gonna stop listening to Bob Dylan because of an allegation he vigorously denied, was proven to not even be in America at the time at the time he allegedly did it, in a case brought forth by a shady lawyer who has been proven to be corrupt. If it turns out he actually did it then I'll reevaluate but to just assume he's guilty is a stupid way of thinking, especially when the facts of the case all point toward his innocence as of right now |

09.06.21 | I don't separate the art from artists because why should I, but in reference to Dylan in particular, he sucks dickhole anyway, why would you listen to this |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.06.21 | I've never had this happen to an artist that I care enough about for it to be much of a conundrum tbqh. Easy to boycott artists I've never cared much about but I'm sure it's different when it's someone whose music is very important to you. |
botb
09.06.21 | I think separating the art from the artist isn’t too tough to do personally but I kind of make a conscious effort not to give them money for preorders or merch or whatever. But I think Bob Dylan sucks so I can’t really act like that particular one affected me |
ArsMoriendi
09.06.21 | "I have not listened to the artist who I consider the greatest of all time in this period out of principle and will not again unless he is cleared"
So guilty until proven innocent?
Don't support them with money, but also don't punish yourself by keeping music you love out of your ears... it's not like you doing that is actually effecting Dylan, it's only effecting you |
onionbubs
09.06.21 | pretty rarely can i still listen to bands when i know theyve done fucked up shit. think this is the opposite of how most ppl are but i usually only can if i didnt get into the band before i knew about said fucked up shit bc then the engagement w the work has at least always been consistent (altho typically id rather not do that either and normally only do so to fill in gaps within understanding a genre as a whole), but when prior comfort albums are tainted theyre ruined forever for me. i have too emotional a connection to music to deal w the disappointment that inherently comes along w listening to a prior problematic fav. also in general id just rather not listen to music by shitty people when i could alternatively listen to not shitty people
pretty gradual process if its like a HUUGE fav tho. dropped my high school favorite band after finding out the singer pal'd around w nazis/abusers but it took a while to actually phase them out of my listening habits bc id jammed them daily for like 4 years. happened eventually tho after like a few months |
Colton
09.06.21 | it would be hard for me to separate the art from the artist with Dylan because so much of what makes his music good is his energy/persona/character and it would be hard for me to not have my perception of that be affected if these allegations are true. but like Ars said, guilty until proven innocent is a dumb way of thinking, for this particular case anyway (if there were multiple women all with similar stories it would be different) |
Colton
09.06.21 | the fact that the accuser’s lawyer has a history of corruption is a big factor too |

09.06.21 | idk and cancel butI can't listen to r kelly anymore. feels weird jamming to his shit |
twlight
09.06.21 | i think the question is, can you remove the art from the artist?
in any case of rape of a minor or grooming or any of that fucked up shit, yeah i'll probably stop listening to the artist. Brand New is one of my favorite bands but after i heard the news, i did stop listening.
as far as ideals or beliefs, i can put that aside. Take Deathspell Omega for example, yes there vocalist has some scumbag ideals, but i can remove myself from that because there is no physical proof he hurt anyone. also when you look into the minimal info about that band you'll realize he A. doesn't write the lyrics for DA, and B. he's in the band because he has a good scream for black metal |
wham49
09.06.21 | it has to play into it, I try not to support criminals especially despicable criminal activity such as this would be,
i would put bob aside which would be a lot seeing as I have everythign he has ever made with posters and stuff like that but that is all I would think of instead of the songs |
twlight
09.06.21 | penis. queef. dildo. bungholio"

09.06.21 | I don't believe in making everything so black and white as to completely rule out listening to or viewing someone's art/music/etc. Would I stop being a fan if I was die-hard into them though? Yeah probably.

09.06.21 | if it's 100% proven they did something horrible, then yes. doesn't matter who. with that said, it doesn't really affect the art from being good. like Varg is a horrendous person, but Burzum has great albums. |
Snake.
09.06.21 | growing up listening to brand new in my formative years made it really tough for me to accept the awful shit that jesse did, as it almost felt like their music was sewn into the fabric of my very being. the only way for me to really accept it was to just let go of them entirely; if not i'd have everybody who only associated me by being a big fan of theirs fling all this shit at me about how awful of a person he is as if i didn't already know |
Slugboiiii
09.06.21 | Depends how good the music is. I can quite easily not listen to the paedo rat Takeshi69 coz he's absolute dog shit. I find it hard not to listen to Brand New though |
AlexKzillion
09.07.21 | Depends on who it was in the band a lot of the time. Like I still jam ADTR, one of my fave bands since middle school, quite a bit despite the allegations against the bassist because that dude doesn't contribute at all to why I love the band, like literally can't even hear him... but if those allegations were against Jeremy McKinnon I would've disowned them in a heartbeat. I'd prob have no interest in listening to their music at all ever had I not already been a fan for so long.
Will prob still never buy a shirt or a ticket to a show again unless he's kicked out, but I won't deprive them of the $.002 they get from me streaming their album on Spotify unless it's like a Brand New situation where it's legit uncomfortable to listen. |
wildinferno2010
09.07.21 | Depends on so many things. Biggest would be the severity of what they did (no way would I ever listen to lostprophets), how certain I am that they did it (I'm really not that sure Dylan did anything based on what I've seen) and also what they've been doing since then (...I don't have any solid examples of this. Neige, maybe - I don't care that he was in Peste Noire 10+ years ago, there's nothing recent to indicate that he might be a neo-nazi now. Afaik.).
god what a clusterfuck of a post |

09.07.21 | I love Crystal Castles and still enjoy the music even though Ethan Kath is likely a turd. And if anyone tries to tell me Michael Jackson didn't have sex with little boys I would question their sanity, but his music will always be played. Gotta separate the artist from the art, surely... |
Keyblade
09.07.21 | if u think he did that and u can still listen to his music u must got superpowers |
kalkwiese
09.07.21 | I don't think it's possible to separate art and artist 100%, but for lighter cases it works well enough. For the more severe ones idk. You really have to decide it for yourself and I won't shame you. |
Drifter
09.08.21 | "And if anyone tries to tell me Michael Jackson didn't have sex with little boys I would question their sanity"
