No
Almost yes
Swap Gens 4 and 5 and embrace that epic Mt. Cornetto ascension rn this minute how dare you |
Morningrise767
09.03.21 | 1. Gen 2
2. Gen 1
3. Gen 3
4. Everything else |
Pikazilla
09.03.21 | You have to bring an army of bidoof to conquer Mt Cornetto
Also I will always call it that now |
kalkwiese
09.03.21 | Wow, gen 5 highest? For real? I mean, it has some cool ideas, but I have some serious gripes with if. Like, you can't plant berrys, wtf.
But it has some cool shit going on |
kkarron
09.03.21 | Gen 5 makes me want to kill myself.
Pokemon in general works better with less graphical fidelity, I feel. You can really let your own imagination run loose.
Also best design is gen 1 Golbat, hands down https://www.pngitem.com/pimgs/m/23-237183_pokemon-gen-1-golbat-sprite-hd-png-download.png |
kalkwiese
09.03.21 | Yea, I feel like pokemon loses something with 3D models tbh. The more cartoony style of gen 4 worked really well |
Pikazilla
09.03.21 | Gen 5 was cartoony too though. Also B2/W2 region map is objectively the best, come on now |
Scheumke
09.03.21 | Agreed with more of this than I would've thought. Yes gen2 had the best games, yes gen1 is the goat but I get the gen5 number 1. For me personally it would be gen1,2,5,3 -> everything else. But there's a HUUUUUGGEE nostalgia bias here. First generation was pretty much marketed for me at the time as a 10 year old. I think I literally played my Pokemon Blue to death. Still have it but I don't think it works anymore. |
Trifolium
09.03.21 | Nicely unique look on things!! I was so ready to say GEN 2 is toooo looooow, but I'm happy with the Best game in the series-remark. Also shocking how not-shocking GEN 5 being 1 is when looking from a roster point of view! Wow. |
JohnnyoftheWell
09.03.21 | B2/W2 map is p good but Sinnoh trumps all
and if we're talking that specific roster being the best, I can maybe abide, but gtfo with that B/W fanwagoning. zoomer influx. |
Pikazilla
09.03.21 | Yes, same here Scheum! I started with Pokemon Red back in the day, so there's definitely a nostalgia bias here.
@Trif, yes my ranking is more roster and map related. HG/SS are the best Pokemon games as far as overall experience goes. |
Demon of the Fall
09.03.21 | gen 5 being no.1 is kind of based (especially the sequels), although I feel like you're too harsh on 6/7. The designs for Sw/Sh are generally awful from what I've seen - never played 'em though.
Most gens have fairly balanced good/bad design ratio actually, they're a lot closer than anyone is likely willing to admit.
gen 2 remakes for the win, then gen 5 v2. I like them all, but it gets tricky to rank after that. |
kalkwiese
09.03.21 | "Gen 5 was cartoony too though. Also B2/W2 region map is objectively the best, come on now"
Yea, I didn't wanna leave out gen 3 and 5 lol. I like 2D pokemon best |
kkarron
09.03.21 | "Muk and Voltorb aren't much better." yeah those two were actually written into the, uh, """"story"""" though. Grimers and Muks polluted ponds while Voltorbs could ambush you when you thought you were picking up an items.
Then again I don't fucking know maybe some new game has you unlocking buildings with Klefki. Stick it in harder daddy yeeeeh. |
Demon of the Fall
09.03.21 | Also B2/W2 region map is objectively the best, come on now (2).
This I agree with. |
combustion07
09.03.21 | I've only played 8,4 and 3. For me those go 4,3,8. Silver was my shit back then |

09.03.21 | why is your taste in pokemon generations so good but your taste in music is so shit? |
nightbringer
09.03.21 | Honestly, gen 1 would probably be bottom for me now. I can't imagine ever playing through it again. Terrible balancing, appalling move pools, the quality of life features are non-existent. I mean, I was a kid through pokemania in the 90s but the early gens are actually not that great. Even gen 2, which I adored at the time, is pretty hard to play these days. It's so damn slow. Takes you forever to learn a move and when you do it's like slash at lv 35. All the wild pokemon and trainers are super weak. Urgh. Gen 4 and 5 are probably the best to actually play. I haven't played 6 or 8 though. |
Pikazilla
09.03.21 | Nightbringer, I cannot imagine myself playing through old games without the emulator speed-up button. The experience is just too painful now. |
Parallels
09.03.21 | in gen 1 speed is like 90% of a good mon
1 hit ko's are even calculated by speed
its so dumb it hurts to think about
also great balls were better than ultra balls at times due to bad programming |
nightbringer
09.03.21 | Yeah, fair enough, speeding them up certainly helps. Also, hacking the ROMs helps >:] |
Scheumke
09.03.21 | List is talking about roster though, and Gen 1 does have some of the most inspired and classic pokemon out there. *Or not, seems I'm just talking out of my ass lol |
Pikazilla
09.03.21 | Yes, exactly. I wasn't taking gameplay into account, because it's something that's expected to be improved over the course of the series, so comparing the series with respect to that is just unfair and makes zero sense. |
nightbringer
09.03.21 | Sure, if we're just talking about the roster and pokemon designs, the early gens win for me. Indeed, gen 3 has also grown on me massively, design-wise, over the years.
I haven't played gen 8 but they strike me as the worst designs... |
Pikazilla
09.03.21 | I mean, gen 4 introduced the physical/special split - but it also had the slowest battling system of them all. For reference:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gCvQiFUyC4 |
nightbringer
09.03.21 | It's been ages since I played gen 4, not gonna lie.
I actually sold all of my pokemon games, thinking I was done with them. Then the pandemic hit and I was like "oh, might like to play those after all, damn" |
kalkwiese
09.03.21 | Thank GOD they introdiuced that physical/special split! Dividing types into physical and special made 0 sense |
Pikazilla
09.03.21 | Platinum is a great game, but Diamond and Pearl have a ton of issues - regional dex only has just over 100 pokes, which is total bs. And because of that certain trainers have really dumb rosters - the e4 fire dude only has one actual fire type. Platinum fixes some of these problems, luckily. |
nightbringer
09.03.21 | There are a lot of features of the old games that made little sense. Sometimes it feels like there was zero effort put into making the game balanced. How did they let psychic be so broken in gen 1? |
Pikazilla
09.03.21 | Also, Gen 6 has the easiest and therefore worst E4. Imagine having a region with Bagon, Dratini, and Gible and giving none of these pokemon to the dragon trainer? And why do they have only four pokemon each? WTF game freak |
nightbringer
09.03.21 | Why do bug, ghost, dragon, fighting have like zero moves? How was that allowed? |
GhandhiLion
09.03.21 | I thought fire red was gen 3 |
Pikazilla
09.03.21 | Afaik Red and Blue were actually unfinished Gold and Silver as far as a lot of features are concerned. Maybe they didn't have enough budget or time allocated to make everything as originally intended. A lot of gen 2 pokemon were designed during the gen 1 development cycle. |
GhandhiLion
09.03.21 | putting gen 5 above 1 is very based tho |
tectactoe
09.03.21 | I have an undying affinity for Gen 1 and 2, simply because they came at such a pivotal moment in my life (i.e., fifth grade or so, when every adolescent boy really starts to get into video games) and I’ve played Red and Gold more than any other game for sure. However the best Pokemon game imo is Emerald. Not sure what Gen it is considered, but that game was literally perfect. |

Ho-Oh is cool as shit |
Demon of the Fall
09.03.21 | gen 1 would be utterly awful to play now and is objectively the worst game, but yeah nostalgia is a thing... I actually have zero desire to play them again. Lets not ruin the memories. |
Pikazilla
09.03.21 | You can actually get every pokemon in the og red and blue by inputting a very specific list of commands. Game code is being held together by duct tape |
Scheumke
09.03.21 | Gold/Silver/Crystal and B/W2 are the ones that hold up the best imo. Yeah gen2 games miss some quality of life, but they make up for it by giving us a whole continent with gen2 shit followed up by everything from blue/red/yellow. |
Keyblade
09.03.21 | gen 5 pokemon goated, but the game (I only played White 1 so far) was a little underwhelming
i'm a filthy genwunner so my ranking prob goes, 1-3-2-4-5 |
InFlamesWeThrash666
09.03.21 | I've played 1,2,3,4,7 and a little bit of 5
Diamond was the first one that was actually mine and not my cousin's so it's pretty special to me...My favorite is probably Silver though because Lugia
|
JefferyBigglestein2
09.03.21 | i actually fully agree with this list, except swap Gens 1 and 2. Gen 1 is fucking broken and barely playable, even if its an incredibly fun game with a great storyline and an enjoyable selection of mons. Gen 2 is incredibly ahead of its time and has the nostalgia of the Gen 1 games without the bugs, balancing issues, and broken mechanics of the original.
Hot take, BW2 are the best and most content-rich games this series has. |

09.03.21 | the only flaw i can think of for the game is that the storyline is somewhat linear, especially towards the beginning. But the game is an absolute love letter to the NDS era of pokemon and just has so much to do, especially compared to the games of today which are absolutely void of content in the postgame. |
SteakByrnes

Yea absolutely, it also boasts the best story in any of the games by quite a large margin. They basically made a cool jrpg storyline with the old faction of team plasma against the new faction lead by ghetsis, and him just blasting the region with ice and all the other shit he does makes him feel like an actual evil antagonist for once. Also shout out to all the shit you can do in the game, like the side quest with the dropped xtransceiver, the tournament mode in driftveil with all the old leaders and characters from past games, etc. Man, they dropped the best pixel art they've ever done too, they perfected that art. |

09.03.21 | Hoenn and Unova simply have better world building. Caves, cities, etc. have rich lore or important events a player associates with them, which is what makes them memorable. Sinnoh has... Mt. Coronet, and the whole game is basically one big hiking trip, while the newer titles don't even bother weaving any kind of story tidbits into their respective regions, making caves and routes just areas with a bunch of new mons, and that's it. Huge lack of distinctive landmarks too. |
SteakByrnes
09.03.21 | "...the newer titles don't even bother weaving any kind of story tidbits into their respective regions, making caves and routes just areas with a bunch of new mons, and that's it. Huge lack of distinctive landmarks too."
Yea I've noticed that too, and the newer regions themselves just aren't memorable at all really. Closest they came to making memorable routes and cities again was XY, but even that doesn't feel particularly great other than like maybe Lumiose |
Pikazilla
09.03.21 | Yeah, most of them feel like procedurally generated masses of land/sea with trainers and mons thrown in for the sake of being there. |
Keyblade
09.03.21 | i'm playing SS right now and I can't get over how they didn't fix the level curve problem from the original gen 2 games lmao
it really hurts the enjoyability of the game. prob the least fun I had with any pokemon game which is a shame cuz it's content rich |
Pikazilla
09.03.21 | They should introduce level caps already. A lot of fangames/rom hacks have done so. That way, you won't sweep all the boss fights with just your starter mon. |
trilo
09.03.21 | solid ranking tbh even though i think gen 2 games suck. they just have the luxury of not being as bad as the newer ones. glad gen 5 gettin some respect tho. slaps |
Keyblade
09.03.21 | crystal is great tho. music slaps unbelievably hard and some of the new additions were great like the dark/steel types, day/night cycle, happiness/context-specific evolutions etc and of course an entire second region in the post-game and returning to ur old stomping grounds from gen 1 |
Havey
09.03.21 | from a roster p.o.v gen 1 is 1, anything else is cope |
trilo
09.03.21 | oh for sure it brought good additions but u pretty much hit the nail on the head for why i think those games don't hold up. the level curve is atrocious and tbh kanto is just a victory lap that gets stale on subsequent playthroughs. whole lot of filler just for one good battle (red). i'd rather just play gen 1. |
Keyblade
09.03.21 | yea I agree with all of that, it has a fatal flaw that holds it back and it's amazing to me that the remake didn't fix it

ConcubinaryCode
09.03.21 | Gen 8s biggest sin is having zero exploration. They did away with hms but at the cost of taking away all the extra puzzles you could do we with them. The only extra area I can think of is the lake at the pokemon lab where there's an obstagoon but that's it. The layout is so flat and straightforward which started being a thing since gen 5 but that still had lots of side areas. The dlc added a little fun but you just run out of stuff to do too quickly. Might be the game I played the least if you don't want to count let's go.
Gen 2 I actually think is super overrated. The roster is complete dogshit and you can't even get the cool pokes until after the elite 4. Kanto redux is cool but half the map is gutted which isn't too surprising given it came out on the og Gameboy but hgss didn't build upon it either. Frlg even added some bonus areas granted they weren't amazing but it was something.
Gen 6 actually has an amazing roster that people never seem to bring up probably because it's pretty unspectacular in every other way but oras is legitimately top tier poke.
Gen 7 is a little hated on which I can understand but usum are terrific games and it added some great staple pokemon and you can actually explore a lot of stuff in the games.
Gen 1 might be my least favorite but it has its charms. It realistically doesn't stand a chance against any modern game but that's not its fault. Plus the 3ds version gives you the hidden abilities if you transfer them through home which is tight.
I'm actually playing through black 2 atm and it's actually damn good. The experience growth was a much needed change and the wild pokemon are easier to grind against. The map is decent too and it's roster is great. Definitely a contender for best pokemon game. |

09.05.21 | Sharenge, all the Super Music Collections are unique with their own set of tracks. The exception to that is not included on this website - a Japan-only release of Red & Green, which is just a reissue of the "GameBoy Entire Pokémon Sounds Collection" (Gen 1 sountrack) combined with the first disc of the FR/LG Super Music Collection.
The Kanto music from HG/SS - and the original GSC - is actually new compositions based on the Gen 1 tracks. It is available on the HG/SS Super Music Collection in the new orchestrated versions from HG/SS, and the "GB Sounds" version, which emulates the original GameBoy songs from Gen 2. Note that the GB Sounds music in HG/SS is actually new as well, and the only music from main series Pkmn games not to have official soundtrack releases are the original GSC and Sw/Sh. |

SWSH for the DLC is also a good investment.

best soundtrack is HGSS or gen 3 with BW2 and gen 4 close behind

so many different criterias/things to consider |

Pokemon Design: 3 > 6 > 4 > 2 > 1 > 5 > 7 > 8

I cant understand anyone calling gen 6 having bad designs, except for 4/5 mons (like Goodra) the entire new roster was top tier and incredibly consistent. The only other gen that can claim this is 3.

Have you seen greninja, talonflame, pyroar, aegislash, malamar, dragalge, clawitzer, heliolisk, tyrantrum, aurorus, hawlucha, trevenant, xerneas and yveltal? Gen 6 had best baseline designs.
and the best legendaries. Xerneas an Yveltal are by far the best legendary duo and 10/10 designs.
Sadly the game itself was shit. |

09.15.21 | Xerneas is terrific but yvetal just feels like dark lugia. Solgaleo and Lunala are get my best duo vote. Maybe groudon/kyogre for second place. |

10.27.21 | which of the new 'mon games do you plan on getting Pika... any/none? I like the idea of the whole 3d open world thing, but not sure how it'll play out in practice. |
Pikazilla
10.27.21 | I might get Legends Arceus but only once I've seen enough gameplay footage to make a reasonable judgment. What I already don't like about it is the graphics. The zorua/zoroark cinematic is extremely well done. Why couldn't they make the game graphics at least half as good? |
Demon of the Fall
10.27.21 | yeah the graphics don't look great from what I've seen and that's putting it mildly. Hopefully the world doesn't feel empty, because that's another potential issue I can see cropping up. |
Pikazilla
10.27.21 | I just don't understand how it's not within their budget to make something more serviceable looking |
Demon of the Fall
10.27.21 | It's definitely within their budget, surely? It's either laziness because they know the fanbase will lap it up anyway, or they're struggling to get the balance between a faithful recreation of the world in 3d and the potential for graphical advancements that end up looking out of place. Idk here, just speculating. |

10.27.21 | balance comment on Gen 1 is good. I was so frustrated playing it as a kid because Gengar and other Pokemon I really liked sucked and just died to Psychic... |
Alondite
10.27.21 | Gen 5 is absolutely the best. Largest generation of Pokemon with the most diversity in typings (including new typings) and base stat distributions. No required HMs (except BW2, which required one or two.) EXP scaling, Audino, good overworld layout that wasn't a pointlessly convoluted mess. Soundtrack fucking rules; the Low Health beep being turned into a song was brilliant. Shame most of the great things this gen did were abandoned immediately for gimmicky bullshit.
Gen 1 is a broken mess. You've never had a proper Gen 1 experience unless you've been Paralyze-Wrapped into oblivion. Normal and Psychic types are too good and have no real counters.
Gen 2 is overly defensive, boring, a bunch of Pokemon are locked to Kanto, and some Pokemon (like Gyarados) got screwed by the Special split. Trainer level curve is all over the place and makes for inconsistent difficulty
Gen 3 Overdid it with the water. Competitive game got really linear after awhile and it was clear what the optimal team combinations were.
Gen 4 has Eight fucking HMs (six of which are required), a convoluted overworld, and everything was excruciatingly slow. Type split was amazing, though. Garchomp broke competitive play.
Gen 6 was pitifully easy and didn't add very many Pokemon relative to most of the other generations. Mega Pokemon basically broke the game, especially after ORAS and the Primals.
Gen 7 was pretty neat, but some of the new Pokemon base stat spreads were really odd and made for some downright useless Pokemon, and others who were so busted they were almost immediately banned from competitive play. Terrain effects were (and still are) unintuitive.
Gen 8 is actually fine. A bit on the easy side, and Dynamax is too strategically centralizing, but made some welcome changes that opened the strategy up a bit and added a decent number of worthwhile Pokemon.
|
Pikazilla
10.27.21 | Great comments, Alondite. I agree with the majority. A lot of gen 7 pokes had potential but they were outright ruined by some insanely dumb stat distributions (poor Vikavolt).
Gen 1 has become so much better with the ph/sp split, improved movesets, etc. Gengar and Dragonite are just so OP now. |
Alondite
10.27.21 | Yeah I really only glossed over most of the points from each generation here. The original Gen 1 games have so many issues lol. Playing FRLG with an expanded ROM base with the type split, new movies, etc. is so much better. |

Pikazilla
11.01.21 | Damn. As far as hacking coding goes, this is probably the most advanced hack out there. It's also made by the same team that made CFRU. |
Pikazilla
11.01.21 | Which romhacks do you enjoy? |
nightbringer
11.01.21 | Oh, Unbound is definitely super impressive, technically. Major kudos to the team. I just have an aesthetic preference for the vanilla game's overworld visuals. And I think grittier stories are hard to pull off.
I still haven't played many hacks. Only Gaia, Blaze Black, and now Unbound. Gaia is probably my favourite so far :) |
GreyShadow
11.01.21 | i looooooooooved Prism but that's the only one I completed.
i was playing Radical Red at the end of last year a lot. got to just past silph co i believe. that one really made me believe that making pokemon hard as fuck, but not in a grindy, rather a strategic way, might just be the answer to making this series good again lol |
Pikazilla
11.01.21 | Prism is my favourite romhack.
I didn't enjoy Radical Red because it was overcrowded af. A lot of mons felt out of place on their respective routes, which only ruined the experience further. And as far as difficulty is concerned, it wasn't even anywhere near as the truly hard stuff out there. I mean you get access to HP/PP Marill/Meditite in Viridian city.
Inclement Emerald plays like a much smoother experience and is just as difficult. EVs/IVs/Natures/Abilities are more readily available too, which makes team building less grindy.
Pokemon Gaia is amazing and I know they've been working on a new version for a good couple years now - looking forward to that immensely.
If you want a very difficult pokemon experience with modern mechanics, play Rejuvenation. That game has the best balancing and forces you to learn to make best use of what you get. Pseudos? Yeah, you not getting those. Competitive battle items like Leftovers/Life Orb, etc.? Nope. Gyarados, broken megas? Nope. Fields that give bosses a tremendous advantage? Every fucking time. Do trainer mons get perfect IVs and competitive builds? After third badge, yes. And later on, they get to break the EV limit, while you don't. |
nightbringer
11.01.21 | Nice, yeah, I started Rejuvenation, and it seemed pretty good, although sometimes I found myself suddenly thrust into a battle that broke that game's level curve. Would love to keep playing but I really like playing things on my phone and it doesn't run smoothly on it lol. (Another complaint I have about the Unbound graphical overhaul is that by pushing the system to its limits, my phone emulator struggles to render it in fast forward, hah.) |
Pikazilla
11.01.21 | Yeah, I mean, some people can't even run it on their laptops. It's definitely not something to be played on a phone or tablet. |

Demon of the Fall
01.28.22 | gen 5 mk:2 is the best Gyro.
Huh, so you actually meant Ursaring? Did Ursaring need an evo? I thought the guy was decent already. Not every Pokémon needs to be super-powered. More deserving Pokes imo. |
Demon of the Fall
01.28.22 | I do like the gen 6 designs and team-building. The map is bland and too linear, but Pika's wrong on the designs. I mean every gen has numerous duds, but gen 6 performs well overall I reckon. 'Design' takes are completely subjective of course but how can you forget about Dragalage, Pangoro, Gogoat, Heliosk etc. I even love Malamar, although I can see why people wouldn't. |
Pikazilla
01.28.22 | Dunsparce really does need an evo. Poor thing. |
Demon of the Fall
01.28.22 | I love the little guy, it's just crying out for an actual flying evo - as a concept I think it could work, hell even make it a bloody dragon if you want. It already has (inadequate) wings, why not fulfil it's lifelong dream.
Isn't he popular with old gen 2-ers like us? I mean, he is right? He must be. Being obtainable early on in both gen 6 AND 7 tells me Gamefreak knows there's a market for him. |

01.28.22 | Gen 5s roster is underrated for sure. It's got nothing on 1 and 3 though. |

Demon of the Fall
01.28.22 | I didn't actually play 3 till the remakes, the highly coveted (by me at the time) GBA alluded me unfortunately.
ORAS is/was very enjoyable, but I'd be kidding myself by pretending that needing 6,000 HMs isn't a little annoying. One of the modern quality of life updates that really made sense to me was the lesser emphasis on/eventually culminating in the complete removal of HMs. |
Pikazilla
01.28.22 | Demon, you should play Inclement Emerald. The best Hoenn gba experience currently available. |

Probopass has abysmal offensive stats and it's not even that good as a wall. It only recently got body press, which finally allowed it to dish any sort of damage. Try durant, it's a lot of fun. |

I've done that run, it was a lot of fun. I used Probopass over Aggron because I like him (but I wouldn't recommend it). When the rest of your team is Magnezone, Lucario, Ferrothorn, Excadrill and Skarmory it doesn't really matter what you use.
Also completed a mono bug and mono electric run on B2, the latter was actually the hardest due to a lack of offensive versatility and basically no resistances (despite weaknesses being easily covered). |
