08.20.21 | This feels like the album that should have followed up the Parallax releases. I think that it definitely succeeds as a return to their core sound from that period, mixing heavy does of their approach from their most recent output into the equation in a way that sounds more cohesive than anything from Coma Ecliptic and the Automata records. At this point though, I'm not very attracted to what they're doing anymore, and I highly doubt that this will have the same degree of staying-power that Colors and the Great Misdirect did back in the day. It's a solid sequel, which means a lot given how these attempts to revisit old classics usually fall flat at best, but if I want a dose of BTBAM, I'll always head back to their 2000s material before I'd head to this. I hope that it succeeds though. Like I said, it sounds great upon a first listen. It's just not for me anymore. |

08.20.21 | i feel like not jumping on the btbam train until relatively recently is why i'll probably end up appreciating this more than people that seem tired of it. even after learning to really love Colors I still need to be in a pretty specific mood to put these guys on.

08.20.21 | I think that its energy is the best thing going for it. All of their albums make for a great time, and even the moments where the "wank" is at its most extreme, it's usually campy, enjoyable, and I think that the band is completely self-aware in their over-indulgences. They're at the point of comfort and confidence now, where they can basically just head into the studio with a framework, write on the fly and improvise, and have fun with the process, knowing that their fanbase will likely love it. I respect that, and their energy is contagious, even if it isn't always appealing on a personal level.
That lack of self-awareness is a big problem in the case of bands like Dream Theater. I think that they got in the habit of taking themselves too seriously for various reasons, and the lack of energy and passion in their most recent albums are what has hurt them the most. BTBAM never really had that issue, and has always embraced their strengths without ever seeming as if they have to prove anything to anyone. |
