It's weird how everyone was like 'the ending of GOT was the problem'. Like after the first season I felt 60% of the show was characters crossing terrain interspersed with random cruelty. The show was like a long Anton Corbijn video
Well, I wouldn't say it was just the ending of GoT. A lot of issues were already popping up by the 5th season, and then the 7th season is when they became a lot more apparent. And then with the final season it all finally came crashing down
I found season 1 - 4 pretty overrated too. Like it was an ok pulp show pretending to be deep. Aside from the last season I thought the whole thing only started to pay dividends in season 5 and 6 on the build up of misery
Black Mirror is like 20% genius, 30% entertaining, 50% convoluted mess. It varies so much episode to episode.
Y'all need to check out Oz. The only prison drama that doesn't glorify prison in any way and gets to painful amounts of fucked up to show how backwards our American system is. Plays out closer to a Shakespearean tragedy than a regular TV drama.
Also gotta say House of Cards first season could be here. Everything after it sucked but that first season had some magic to it.
"i dont rly like tv shows and im a antiquity nerd i guess so bit of bias but yeah hbo rome is 1000x the greatest drama show ever (with great cast too ciaran hinds tobias menzies james purefoy)"
are you deadass with this my guy? Rome was entertaining or neat at best. there were so many parts of that show which were stupid and awful and wretched, like Octavian sleeping with his sister. plus the fake story about the two guys Titus and the other one was also random and pointless
as far as acting goes, the guy who played caesar made him look like a fuddyduddy, Caesar oozed charisma, that guy brought none of that to the table. the best, by far, goes to the guy who played Antony. also the guy who played Brutus did a good job. Cicero was made to look like a dweeb and Cato's character was hamfisted at best.
the best modern series made about antiquity is spartacus. other than that nothing comes even close to "I, Claudius" which I should probably have on this top 10 to be honest
Dark had a decent first season but then it got beyond retarded after that. plus it's so tragically mired in such a think melodramatic haze that it completely ruins the intrigue. they really cheese it up at the end of every episode with the slow melodramatic songs that play over the action with the main character inevitably stumbling upon some turning point in the plot. it became predictable and dull.
Twd got way too bloated way too fast. S2 was a snoozefest. Handmaid's tale also has this problem. I think I gave up after s3 for that one but it was still higher quality than walking dead. Didn't help how depressing it was to watch
also, if anything deserved to be skipped it would have been the plots with his stupid teenage son and his annoying sister. I mean, did we really need another scene of his son grossly misbehaving and his selfish and sloppy behaviour and tony predictably doing nothing about it? or Tony's sisters endless infantile manipulation that didn't serve the plot in any way? (and also Tony predictably doing nothing about it)
by the way, the ending rivals GoT for worst endings to a series of all time. whoever wrote that thought they were going to be hailed as an avaunt-guarde genius when instead the ending was weird and terrible. (and also lazy and not creative)
this leads me to my last point which is that the writing is overrated. Essentially it boils down to Tony meets character. character becomes problem for Tony. Tony wacks character. oh and not to mention all the plots suddenly introduced just to disappear as suddenly as them came (Melfi's rape comes to mind). The strength of the show was its wonderful acting and character relationships (besides his stupid son and his useless sister), and largely the strengths overcame the weaknesses, but this is hardly the legendary show its made out to be
