05.28.21 | smh at all the people conflating classical music with baroque and romanticism |
Trifolium
05.28.21 | But kalk you are assuming which interpretation of classical was used by the creator of this list too!
Classical period/Classical music is always confusing.
"Historically, the term 'classical music' refers specifically to the musical period from 1750 to 1820 (the Classical period). In a more general sense classical music refers to Western musical traditions considered to be apart from or a refinement of western folk music traditions and encompasses the broad span of time from before the 6th century AD to the present day, which includes the Classical period and various other periods.[1]" - Wikipedia: Classical music
This helps. |

05.28.21 | Nice names here. All are great. But, my three favourites are probably the first three, Bach, Beethoven e Mozart, probably by this order. But, many others could be part of my list, especially the composers of the Baroque period. |
Egarran
05.28.21 | No need for those buts. |
sumyunguy
05.28.21 | While there are countless genius composers who have graced us with a treasure trove of brilliant music, Bach is the alpha and omega. Nobody has and nobody will ever surpass him. It peeves me to no end when Beethoven is placed above him. You can personally prefer Beethoven over Bach, that's completely fine, but objectively speaking, Bach is greater and there is really no discussion. |
Atari
05.28.21 | Sibelius is great, surprised he hasn’t even been mentioned yet |
CaliggyJack
05.28.21 | Where the fuck is Saint-Saens? |
DadKungFu
05.28.21 | Saint-Saens isn't even top 10 romantic composers |
CaliggyJack
05.28.21 | Danse Macabre>Anything Haydn had ever done in his career |
Egarran
05.28.21 | Among other things, Saint-Saens wrote The Carnival of the Animals. A true classic. |
beefshoes
05.28.21 | I love seeing love for Hildegard von Bingen!!! To me, she's basically the Rumi of Catholicism, which is meant as a highest complement. Great list too obviously.
Schoenberg is an easy 1 for me, but JSB is probably after that.....I mean, because he's fucking Bach. Mahler, Webern, Ravel, Wagner, Boulez, Mendelssohn, Berg, Beethoven, Bartok....there are just too many that immediately come to mind, and summon unbridled affection for me. |
CaliggyJack
05.29.21 | "Among other things, Saint-Saens wrote The Carnival of the Animals. A true classic."
Thank God for that man.
Samson and Delilah and Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso are some other classics from him |
DadKungFu
05.29.21 | 1. Bach
2. Beethoven

05.29.21 | For every list without Saint-Saens in it I die inside a little bit |
Egarran
05.29.21 | I had this idea that I loved Bartok but then I actually heard a lot of Bartok and I had to conclude that I don't love Bartok. |
gg901goody
10.26.22 | Missing Debussy, Saint-Saens, Tchaikovsky and Chopin, take out Carl Bach, von Bingen, Haydn, Palestrina, with the exception of Haydn they do not compare |
chchelse2
10.26.22 | Big fan of Liszt! |
BaselineOOO
10.27.22 | Handel easily. |
DadKungFu
10.27.22 | Egarran, what about Bartok's string quartets? Some of the greatest out there imo.
Baseline, I get the sense that you like being contrarian but I gotta ask: why Handel? |
Egarran
10.27.22 | Rec me a piece. |
DadKungFu
10.27.22 | The fifth quartet is probably the most immediately enjoyable, energetic, almost chaotic opening and closing movements and a lot of atmosphere and unusual texture in between, all in an overall symmetrical structure.

Egarran
10.27.22 | Thanks! Yeah that is impressive. But it's also a bit too progressive for me. |
DadKungFu
10.27.22 | Fair lol, being a violin player I loved it from the get-go but I could see how it could be something that's more easily appreciated than enjoyed |
