Tundra
04.15.21 | I also thought 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, & 10 were overrated until last couple years where I slowly started to appreciate each one by one. Tool for instance I think warrants a "understanding" video, as their music is very meticulous and intricately thought out, sure, you can listen to it at face value, but looking into the little details (such as the title track on Lateralus and it's correlation with the fibonacci sequence) gives you a greater appreciation for the music, and in some cases, may enhance the listening experience. |
rellik009
04.15.21 | what Tundra said
music may not be objective, but understanding it more thoroughly certainly impacts your appreciation.

04.15.21 | The subconscious and the conscious are not 2 fully separate things. They are subtly connected and intertwined in a manner so complex we don't even grasp how it works.
If you like music from an emotional/subconscious viewpoint, you are still very likely enjoying that music in a conscious/logical level. |

04.15.21 | Never got 4. They're serviceable at best. |
Shemson
04.15.21 | Most of these albums are classic ‘growers’ which take multiple listens to get into. There’s often a lot going on and a lot to take in and they’re the kind of albums where you suddenly catch a hidden guitar lead or synth or backing vocal on your tenth listen and are blown away you’ve never noticed it before but then you catch it every time from then onwards.
I always think these albums are like coffee. An acquired taste gained from multiple attempts but now I can’t live without them, certainly that’s me on 1-5 and 7 though personally I prefer AEnima and Ghost Reveries |

04.15.21 | I have a preference for high levels of tonal musicality, creativity and experimentation. I enjoy strong and meaningful lyrics, but the music itself can override bad or average lyrics. I also value transitional flow between songs and a unique and creative theme that can be derived from the album as a whole.
|
kkarron
04.15.21 | Aydross, I gotta say, I feel the exact opposite. I think what you say is enjoying music on a conscious/logical level is a level of rationalization for music that clicks with you emotionally.
But yeah, I agree it isn't a true/false, black or white situation. Enjoyment of art is super complicated. |
AnimalsAsSummit
04.15.21 | I would agree I don’t get most of these albums. I think I have all of the ones I’ve heard here at a 2.5 or lower. |

04.15.21 | i definitely feel a lot of these but 9? that one surprises me lol |

04.15.21 | Bowie, Beatles and QOTSA are big whuts, but sure what's not to get there

04.15.21 | Yall seem tense.
Hope this list at least had some therapeutic qualities. |
Prancer
04.15.21 | If you acknowledge that music is subjective then aren't you contradicting yourself when you say people shouldn't look at the enjoyment of music as a logical process? Like you, most of the music I like comes from the visceral enjoyment of it that resonates emotionally with me. However, the idea that all music or art should be immediately accessible is a bit narrow minded. There have been many albums that I didn't click with right away that grew on me over time and became favorites. That being said, I could never get into Tool either, and if you can't get into any of these artists that's ok too. |
GhandhiLion
04.15.21 | Yes but the booming bass of the pop music makes me want to move so it must be good music. |
kkarron
04.15.21 | Aye, Prancer, that's the complicated part. I wouldn't say that people should not think of enjoyment of music as a logical process, but to acknowledge it as reliant on exisiting biases which manifest in the unconcious.
I do acknowledge that it is not right to demand art to be quickly accessible. I can't say I have a clear opinion in either way, as I'm conflicted because I'm not sure how much enjoyment comes from the consistent exposure TO a piece of music, which is a psychological phenomenon of itself. So no idea, I guess... |
WalrusTusk
04.15.21 | I haven't spent enough time with Either Opeth or Radiohead to have a strong enough opinion about them. QoTSA are hit or miss for me but that album is a ripper. If I were to choose one "classic" rock band that I just don't care for it would also be the Beatles. I get why they are famous, and I understand their impact on music, but I just don't care for their music. |
WalrusTusk
04.15.21 | Oh yeah, and Godspeed! just sounds like post rock to me... |
HYPERVIOLET
04.15.21 | I relate highly with your list description and 100% agree with every album you listed as being overrated. I think it truly is a distinction between those that listen to music to identify themselves and between those who listen to music purely for entertainment and emotional purposes. Having said that, I do like two of Godspeed and tools albums that you didn’t list |
JeremiahBullfrog
04.15.21 | at the end of the day, music, along with all art is subjective, i am not fussed on any bands on this list and im sure many people wont like my music, but this site (yeah i get it its a amateur critic site) are very quick to put others music tastes down and i attribute it to a sever lack of pussy |
HYPERVIOLET
04.15.21 | @tundra to me, this completely defeats the purpose of music if you need to have some intellectual connection with the song as opposed to a visceral one. Tool claim that they didn’t even mean to include the Fibonacci sequence in that song and it happened naturally/coincidently. So it is just a product of raw music expression and should have no influence on the impact of the song itself aside from it’s pretty cool that the Fibonacci sequence is interesting in that it naturally pops up so often |
Egarran
04.15.21 | Well said Jerry |
FabiusPictor202
04.15.21 | we really didn't need the stupid essay at the beginning.
That said I agree with all of these except Pink Floyd and Opeth.
You should add: Meshuggah, Dio, AC/DC, Machine head, Devin Townsend, Anthrax, and the Misfits |
kkarron
04.15.21 | Lads and lasses, I don't mean to put anyone's taste down. Everything's cool and everyone's super. Every piece of music is just not meant for everyone and that includes generally beloved ones. Peace, yo!

04.15.21 | I have less and less respect for that "it's all subjective" argument. Fuck off and own up to the shit you like and don't like. |
kkarron
04.15.21 | Surely that's exactly what "subjective" means? |
rabidfish
04.15.21 | By owning your own taste you create an imbalance. One creates their own set of values to appreciate art. It's a good thing. Trying to be as mid as possible is so sterile. |

04.15.21 | By just going "well I guess it's not for me" and that's it you really don't give yourself the chance to reflect on your own negative reaction to something. |
Kompys2000
04.15.21 | Lol I was kind of expecting this list to have like John Cage or captain beefheart or something not some of the most popular and broadly likeable artists of the modern era?
I guess I think of "music I don't get" being like an "I don't understand what about this appeals to people" thing, versus just not really feeling it on a personal level which is just plain old garden variety not liking something.
Like I totally get not liking the Beatles or Radiohead or David Bowie, those just personally strike me as artists whose appeal is very easy to grasp regardless of whether or not you enjoy their music |
ReturnToRock
04.15.21 | Totally legit approach, even if I do 'get' most of the bands on this list.
My immediate picks would be:
- Tool (literally fell asleep at a gig)
- Muse
- Opeth (but willing to reassess them)
- Slayer
- Avenged Sevenfold
- Pink Floyd (aside from 'The Wall')
- Sigur Ros (kinda)
- Bjork
- Diamanda Galas
- Radiohead
- The Strokes (never got why they were so special aside fron NME kissing their ass on a weekly basis back in the day.)
- Sunn 0)))
- Neurosis / Isis / etc.
- Most drone artists. |

NeroCorleone
04.15.21 | I wouldn't worry about not getting any of these |
HYPERVIOLET
04.15.21 | I think deftones is the most overrated band ever. Every song intro: “you like these power chords?” “Ok what if we play them way louder with drums and bass? Yeah didn’t see that coming did you?” |
gryndstone
04.15.21 | i feel most of these but i can't get over someone not understanding why 6 is a work of art |
Egarran
04.15.21 | Are you saying you don't get it?
cuz I feel this is a theme |
MillionDead
04.15.21 | "Lol I was kind of expecting this list to have like John Cage or captain beefheart or something not some of the most popular and broadly likeable artists of the modern era?" Same. Was expecting harsh noise or some shit that felt more alienating than goddamn rock gods like Pink Floyd or Bowie.
Pretty much all of these guys tend or once tended to write great songs that are easy for lots of people to like. Not super big on QotSA but they absolutely don't suck either. And subjectivity is as much a factor as objectivity. Like they both absolutely contribute how you experience everything in your life. Kind of disingenuous to put one over the other imo. |
BAT
04.15.21 | Honestly youve picked the most boring, pedestrian 'basic bitch' albums by each of these bands. this is stuff to get at bestbuy when your 12 after readin a top 100 guitarists list. 'iron maiden - seventh son of the seventh son' was one of those and it ended up in a box of junk before being negligently chrushed to pieces. however, i've never felt the need to post a 'hey i don't even like seventh son of the seventh son', i don't tend to think about the music i don't really care about. music i genuinely dislike gets more attention.
and honestly everyones expresses themselves differently, i really don't give a fuck about 30 seconds to mars despite glowing recs/people playing me songs/etc. stilll i'm not mad at someone for trying to share something they love with me. i don't watch youtube to hear my inner thoughts/opinions. |
BAT
04.15.21 | also all these albums are for stoners |
NorthernSkylark
04.15.21 | I don’t give a fuck about music tbh |

04.15.21 | And don’t call me a stoner cause I don’t even like the Rolling Stones |
BAT
04.15.21 | older i get the more i understand that the stones are cooler than the beatles, ask me like a decade ago and id be like the stones suck lol
while we're on this topic thooooo : one band thats shoved down my throat, and i've even seen live, was voivoid. idk i don't get it, and tons of my favs are influenced by them. |

04.15.21 | they’ve been fucking them over lately yeah. |
JustJoe.
04.15.21 | it’s cool to try to “get” music but there is merit in simply liking what you like & disliking what you dislike |
JustJoe.
04.15.21 | unless it’s a deliberate approach to try to appreciate music more as a whole or simply a desire to want to more fully understand certain things then that’s cool |
JustJoe.
04.15.21 | otherwise honestly if you don’t enjoy something vastly enjoyed then who cares it’s your music listening life do whatever the fuck your wanna do with it |

04.15.21 | Buuut yeahh music tastes change over the years and id say its sometimes its rewarding to give bands another shot. My intro to weezer was prolly hashpipe and beverly hills, i thought they were complete trash(now i just think they charmingly suck). Likee ive recced deftones and if all someones heard is back to school off white pony, i completely understand the disinterest going foward. |

04.15.21 | Same for me with Deftones, I try and try again but I just don't love anything they do except that one track on Koi No Yokan |
