04.12.21 | Can I just say that for the most part of this list i don't think that the first = the best or even that the importance of the album is matched by it's quality. |

04.12.21 | I think my main issue is just the use of "Jumping Off Point"...do you mean the time that they entered mainstream acceptance? Because some of these genres had whole albums and bands doing them for a long time before the album on the list ever appeared.
And what is "Alt Hip Hop?" I have a feeling that whatever it is, 'Graduation' probably wasn't the first (my mind immediately went to Lupe Fiasco's 'Food & Liquor' from the year prior, or literally any backpack rap from the early-mid 2000's). |
combustion07
04.12.21 | I never looked at 7 as the beginning point for deathcore but I can't say I've dug too deep into the early stages of that genre. There was a few bands earlier on that were doing a death metal/hardcore blend earlier but I'm blanking on their names currently which is weird because I just had them both in rotation like a month ago. They were quite different compared to what deathcore ended up becoming though |
garas
04.12.21 | Oh my...
1 is a kinda good pick, very influental album, but the story is more complicated than that. Bathory, Hellhammer, Slayer, Venom etc. all have been contributed to the thing what became later on black metal.
I doubt 20 would be the first power metal album... my first guess would be Holy Diver by Dio from '83.
And ffs: Van Halen was never fucking metal! |

04.12.21 | You now what? Yeah I agree. Good list, regardless of how I feel towards some of these genres |

04.12.21 | This isn't fully accurate, there was already alternative hip hop way before Graduation.
Eyedea & Abilities - First Born is Alternative Hip Hop and that came out in 2001 (Not saying that album started it, it was just the first album that came to mind.)
Also De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising came out in fucking 89.
I'm not sure what would've been the first Alternative Hip Hop album, but if you're suggesting Graduation helped Alternative Hip Hop get more into the mainstream, I wouldn't even say that's true. |
Veldin
04.13.21 | I've always considered Neil Young's mid to late 70's work to pioneer indie rock/folk. Also he's considered the pioneer for grunge as well with Rust Never Sleeps songs like "Into the Black" and "Sedan Delivery". |
Veldin
04.13.21 | However, I understand the point of the list, so I'm not disagreeing, just giving my two cents |

04.13.21 | Deep Puddle Dynamics (1999) and other Anticon releases helped popularize alt-hip hop imo |

04.20.21 | Lists like this are always a bad idea. You really have to have a thorough knowledge of each genre before you can really describe a band as being the one that propels a genre forward. Besides every genre has so many contributions that lead to their creation that I dont believe any of them have one singular band that was the catalyst for its popularity. |

Sex Pistols did not start Punk Rock, The Ramones debut predated Never Mind the Bollocks by a year.
Black Metal was not started by fucking Bathory for God's sake. Venom's seminal release (LITERALLY CALLED BLACK METAL) created the entire blueprints for both Black and Thrash Metal.
Alternative Hip-Hop as we know it was arguably started by A Tribe Called Quest's debut album in 1990.
While the Smiths certainly popularized the indie genre, Buzzcock's Spiral Scratch EP from 1977 is considered the birthplace of the "indie" genre.
Death did not start Death Metal. Possessed did with Seven Churches two years before that album even came out. |

04.20.21 | "Sex Pistols did not start Punk Rock, The Ramones debut predated Never Mind the Bollocks by a year."
the "as we know it part" are the key words. Sex pistols are about as far away from the ramones as slayer are from Priest. Plus the cultural impact was a lot different to the mones
"Venom's seminal release (LITERALLY CALLED BLACK METAL)"
I could make a lounge album called "brutal slamming death metal", still lounge music
Alternative Hip-Hop as we know it was arguably started by A Tribe Called Quest's debut album in 1990.
"arguably" is the key word here, aka subjective opinion
"While the Smiths certainly popularized the indie genre, Buzzcock's Spiral Scratch EP from 1977 is considered the birthplace of the "indie" genre."
If the smiths started the explosion than are they more responsible for a genre's popularity? six in one, half a dozen in the other
"Death did not start Death Metal. Possessed did with Seven Churches two years before that album even came out."
Most death metal bands/musicians disagree. Its really a matter of opinion dude.

HardPressed
04.20.21 | van halen is NOT glam [2]
First hair metal album is probably either High & Dry or Too Fast For Love. Not Van Halen s/t.
I won't knock you too hard for putting Bathory as the OG black metal band over Venom, cause while Venom DID lay the groundwork, the first two Venom albums just sound so different from what black metal really became. Sure they were a huge influence on black and thrash metal, but that doesn't really mean they were either. I don't think Bathory s/t is a bad take for the first black metal album. If not Bathory, then MAYBE Hellhammer. |
CaliggyJack
04.20.21 | "the "as we know it part" are the key words. Sex pistols are about as far away from the ramones as slayer are from Priest. Plus the cultural impact was a lot different to the mones"
Blitzkrieg Bop is one of the most iconic Punk Rock songs of all time. If you mean political lyrics, then sure, but Ramones were still Punk Rock and they still defined how we recognized the genre in terms of instrumentation and style, especially 90's Ska and Pop Punk.
"I could make a lounge album called "brutal slamming death metal", still lounge music"
Not the point because Black Metal is still 50% a Black Metal album. Their title track is about as "Black Metal" as it gets. Saying they're not Black Metal cause it's not a one to one comparison to Bathory is ridiculous.
""arguably" is the key word here, aka subjective opinion"
OK, but saying Kanye West started it with Graduation is absolutely NOT the start of the genre, period.
"Most death metal bands/musicians disagree. Its really a matter of opinion dude."
There are actual Death Metal songs on Seven Churches mate.
"I won't knock you too hard for putting Bathory as the OG black metal band over Venom, cause while Venom DID lay the groundwork, the first two Venom albums just sound so different from what black metal really became."
I disagree, it's just that Black Metal was about 50% Black Metal and 50% Thrash Metal. Songs like Black Metal are part and parcel Black Metal, while it also has Thrash tracks like Countess Bathory.
