Farmer's Q1 // 3 months tobacco-free
Kicked my nicotine addiction on new years eve and it's currently going well and I feel much more energized. Only downside is my concentration when studying or deep-listening to records is fucked which really sucks, but surely this will get better with time. List is the stuff I listened so far this year. |
1 | | Dvne Etemen Ænka
AOTY for me so far, definitely riding the hype train on that one. It's massive, it has riffs for ages and I love it.
Genre: Proggy Sludge/Post metal
Favorite track(s): Omega Severer, Mleccha
Rating: 4.4 |
2 | | Rostro Del Sol Rostro del Sol
What a nice debut album straight from the mexican desert! It's a short and sweet half an hour trip that you should check out.
Genre: Prog/Jazz Fusion/Blues
Favorite track(s): Bop C Sketches, Tales... a) Awakening of Illusions b) Delirium c) Endless and Beyond
Rating: 4.1 |
3 | | Cult of Luna The Raging River
CoL comes in crashing with another banger with this huge EP (which is longer than some LPs on this list). The second half is some of their best material I've listened to this far.
Genre: Post Metal
Favorite track(s): I Remember, Wave After Wave
Rating: 4.1 |
4 | | Five The Hierophant Through Aureate Void
Jazzy Doom seems to be on the rise and I ain't mad about it, this rips.
Genre: Jazz Fusion/Doom Metal
Favorite track(s): Fire from Frozen Cloud
Rating: 4.0 |
5 | | King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard L. W.
These australian workaholics released yet another album upon us and it's the final part of the microtonal series, which I completely love from front to back and this is no exception.
Genre: Psychedelic/Funk/Doom
Favorite track(s): See Me, K.G.L.W.
Rating: 4.0 |
6 | | Greenleaf Echoes From a Mass
A nice change up in pace and sound for these guys, this seems a lot more focused than the last one with more emphasis in songwriting.
Genre: Stoner Rock
Favorite track(s): Tides, March on Higher Grounds
Rating: 3.9 |
7 | | Emma Ruth Rundle and Thou The Helm Of Sorrow
This is like a bonus EP from the Roadburn collaboration between these two great artists and it's on pair in quality with last years LP but didn't stick that long in my rotation because the initial "whoa" effect from the first LP was gone.
Genre: Sludge Metal
Favorite track(s): Crone Dance
Rating: 3.9 |
8 | | Camera Prosthuman
First time hearing these guys and hell yeah it's groovy, probably gonna check earlier albums if I find the time.
Genre: Kraut Rock/Electronica
Favorite track(s): Alar Alar, El Ley
Rating: 3.8 |
9 | | Wheel (FIN) Resident Human
The latest entry on this list is this sophomore album from finland's wheel and it's another example of a Tool-worship band finding their own style. Rating might change as I need to listen to this some more.
Genre: Prog Metal
Favorite track(s): yet to be found out
Rating: 3.8 |
10 | | Ryley Walker And Kikagaku Moyo Deep Fried Grandeur
Another Roadburn collaboration on this list that makes for a great album. Nothing groundbreaking here, but really smooth anti-headache jams.
Genre: Psychedelic Folk/Jam Rock
Favorite track(s): Shrinks the Day
Rating: 3.7 |
11 | | Psychedelic Porn Crumpets Shyga! The Sunlight Mound
I have to admit I was a bit underwhelmed by this and still kinda am, but that might be the result of the high expectations set by the High Visceral albums. This still might grow on me on revisits.
Genre: Psychedelic/Hard Rock
Favorite track(s): Mr. Prism, Pukebox
Rating: 3.6 |
12 | | Kombynat Robotron -270°C
Finally the krautrockers got a tasty production on an album. Really sweet jams.
Genre: Kraut/Space Rock
Favorite track(s): Chandra
Rating: 3.6 |
13 | | Altin Gun Yol
Third album from the turkish/dutch group Altin Gun sees them change up their sound to a more danceable, synthpop oriented sound and it's highly fun while it lasts. Didn't stick with me that long tho.
Genre: Psychedelic/Turkish Folk/Synthpop
Favorite track(s): Ordunun Dereleri, Kara Toprak
Rating: 3.5 |
14 | | Sonic Flower Rides Again
Heavy Psych Sounds dug out leftover tracks from this side project of Japan's Church of Misery to bring us the second album from these guys and it's enjoyable while it lasts but doesn't stick with you all that long.
Genre: Psychedelic/Stoner Rock
Favorite track(s): Super Witch
Rating: 3.4 |
15 | | Dopelord Reality Dagger
A new EP from Poland's biggest potheads and it's pretty much Dopelord by the book at this point, the LP last year was better.
Genre: Stoner Doom
Favorite track(s): t/t
Rating: 3.4 |
16 | | Powder for Pigeons Crackin Shells
Saw this couple making music a few times live now and they always had a great energy on stage, but the studio stuff doesn't really capture this as they sound really samey and this is no exception, but it's a 15 minute EP so it's less of a problem than the full lenghts, so these are quite fun 15 minutes.
Genre: Stoner Rock/Grunge
Favorite track(s): Skin
Rating: 3.3 |
17 | | Electric Octopus Inclinations
These guys stay my favorite choice for background jams while I do other stuff, because that's where there stuff is great at. Active listening honestly can get quite boring with their ultra long albums and only improvised jams, but they stay the kings of smoothness. The addition of a flute can get annoying at some point.
Genre: Psychedelic/Jam Rock
Favorite track(s): I literally don't know anymore, it's long and the song have no names I'm sorry lol
Rating: 3.1 |
18 | | Acid Mammoth Caravan
They manage to reproduce a certain Stoner Doom sound that I just really dig and the production is tasteful as well, but they really should work on their song-writing, it's just not interesting.
Genre: Stoner Doom
Favorite track(s): t/t
Rating: 3.0 |
19 | | Eyehategod A History Of Nomadic Behavior
Honestly the production on this fucks it all up, while anyway being a forgettable collection of songs.
Genre: Non-sludgy- Sludge?
Favorite track(s): High Risk Trigger
Rating: 2.6 |
20 | | Soen Imperial
This is just not very interesting to me. It has it's moments, but ultimately sounds a little uninspired and also overproduced. Not a big fan of the vocal perfomances either.
Genre: Progressive Metal
Favorite track(s): Illusion
Rating: 2.5 |
21 | | Architects For Those That Wish to Exist
Oof. My roommate is a big architects fan so I was kinda forced to listen to this, but this is the worst I've heard from these guys, for the most of the time I can't really stand it, from the vocal performance to the tryhard and boring orchesttral passages. Uh.
Genre: Metalcore
Favorite track(s): none
