Zel tries Neurosis and succumbs to tea poisoning

After being AGGRESSIVELY PRESSURED by Sputnik hooligans evilford and normaloctagon to do this, I overcame the psychological damage and figured I'd give it a shot I'll likely do the hardcore punk ones in quick succession cos I'm reasonably familiar with those, and then get to the good shit, either at a rate of 1 or 2 a week. Not sure. By the end I'll have repaired the glaring Neurosis whole in my post-metal listening - something I shoulda done 6 years back
Pain of Mind

It may not have any of the depth I'm assuming the later albums are going to have, but overall, a hella fine hardcore album with a bassist too good for everyone else. Black is an odd addition to an album otherwise thundering along at a billion miles an hour, and while I like it I can't help feeling I'd prefer the listen as a whole without the slight roadblock.

Should I rate these? Maybe a 3.4/3.5 dealie.

Sure it sounds like it was recorded on my laptop in 2008, but there's three choice songs on here making it a quality way of spending 9 minutes. Once more that bass is a distinct standout and the vocal performance has that extra-special lo-fi unhinged thing going on which makes it oh-so dreamy. It's a shame none of them got a further treatment on a regular album, although on further exploration Pollution does come up in the Word As Law special edition tracks although whether that's a re-recording, couldn't tell you yet. Lovely, gritty shit.

3.4/3.5 again I suppose.
The Word as Law

This one's a little bit odd. They've slowed down a bit but are still definitely clinging to the hardcore of Pain of Mind and Aberration, but it almost feels like they've not quite figured out how to really harness the potential weightiness of slowing their sound down so it kinda falls a little bit flat. 2.5ish let's say. It's not a bad time, but made a bit awkwardly.
