cute 2021 death metal journal

Gonna be jamming lots of dm and I need a way to keep it organized along with some quick thoughts, so here we go. Don't comment on this thread unless you're cool with seeing it pop up in your discussions regularly lol.
1Frozen Soul
Crypt Of Ice

Nice 'n icy. A solid way to start the year. Not many bells and whistles here, just good ol' dm featuring sounds of a guy getting stabbed to death (probably with an ice pick)
3.8
2Celestial Swarm
Gateways to the Necroverse

Awesome debut from these guys. Blackened dm, basically deathcore I guess. Big production, great musicianship.
3.75
3Gatecreeper
An Unexpected Reality

This one’s an EP, a bunch of short quick titty slapper tracks followed by a long doomy outro. Pretty cool but the guitar tones kinda turn me off.
3.7
4Fractal Generator
Macrocosmos

Tech death/deathcore, pretty much the goal of this album was to play as loud and fast as possible for 40 mins. It kicks ass, but very little dynamic range.
3.6
5Stass
Songs of Flesh and Decay

If you can get past the production being pretty shite, you'll notice everything else is actually pretty good. And I love the album art. (but seriously tho what is with these gravel ass guitar tones. and I mean bad gravel ass, not good gravel ass like Dismember)
3.4
6Asphyx
Necroceros

Some good ol death ‘n roll. Head bangin tunes here, plenty of fun, but nothing too challenging. And absolutely the coolest album art of the year so far.
3.7
7Nervosa
Perpetual Chaos

Thrashy death from an all-female band. The ladies can shred. A tried and true style, good for a listen or two.
3.5
8Deathgoat
Regurgitated into Existence

This one is just fun.
3.6
9Altered Dead
Returned to Life

Mean, aggressive, punishing. Sometimes doomy and sometimes thrashy. My only beef is that hi-hat(?), it's almost unbearable in some songs.
3.5
10Stargazer (AUS)
Psychic Secretions

This album starts off with its weakest track but mostly gets better from there. Had higher hopes but still a good listen.
3.5
11Revulsion (FIN)
Revulsion

Great debut for these Finland lads. The riffing struggles from time to time and for some reason the vocalist sounds like a death metal version of the Parkway Drive guy to me lol. But other than that it rules.
3.6
12Ad Nauseam
Imperative Imperceptible Impulse

Where to even start? This is an absolute beast and will probably take me 10 listens to fully digest. Clocking in close to an hour and almost every minute of it is just chaos. Super impressive musicianship and compositions. This will probably be AOTY for metal.
4.3
13Eximperitus...
Šahrartu

lol this band name. got some atmosphere here, not too long and not too short. wondering why their last album has such an abysmal average?? I'm intrigued now
3.5
14Swampbeast
Seven Evils Spawned of Seven Heads

Another fun one. Nothing new or too original, but good production, vocals, riffs, etc.
3.6
15Mefitis
Offscourings

Hard to believe this came out in 2021 and not mid-90s. Definitely captures the feel of a different era, while still entirely sounding like they are just being themselves. Instrumentals are interesting and well written, not just breakdowns for 40 minutes. As of writing this, probably my second favorite dm release of the year. Ignore the album art, this is fantastic.
4.0
16Ominous Ruin
Amidst Voices that Echo in Stone

Tech death from California. It's nothing that we haven't all heard before. Fast, br00tal, programmed drums.
3.35
17Brand of Sacrifice
Lifeblood

Some of the best deathcore we'll probably get this year. It's as colorful and pulverizing as the album art. Production does it justice in every way and plenty of kickass synths scattered about to accentuate the riffage. Love it.
4.0
18Anthropophagous
Death Fugue

dm with rock 'n roll attitude. touches of hardcore too. definitely channeling some old school grooves! good stuff.
3.7
19Turris Eburnea
Turris Eburnea

At 20 mins and 4 tracks, it's just shy of LP-length. FFO Ad Nauseam and Deathspell Omega. Dark, claustrophobic, proggy. Just a real pleasure to stuff in my earholes.
4.0
20Crypts (DE)
Coven Of The Dead

The title track starts off sounding like it's about to be a horrorcore song...thankfully it didn't happen and that was the only truly questionable moment on the album. Mostly no frills, old school-ish dm with cool album art. Oh yeah - the snare is really bad.
3.6
21Sanguisugabogg
Tortured Whole

A decent toiletcore album that ended up being as 'okay' as most people thought it would be after a few underwhelming singles. They definitely don't take themselves seriously, as the tracks "Interlube" and "Dick Filet" might suggest.
3.3
22Cryptosis
Bionic Swarm

Let's call this death-thrash with a dose of prog! I absolutely love hearing thrash still being done well so long after its heyday. Looks like this is a debut. Hopefully these gents have a long prosperous career ahead of them.
3.9
23Blindfolded and Led to the Woods
Nightmare Withdrawals

This shit is incredible y'all. Weird proggy death metal, but also stupid heavy with awesome production. If Loathe, Deathspell Omega, and Gorguts had a baby...maybe?
4.15
24Wode
Burn in Many Mirrors

Some real head-bangin black death shit. I might even like this than the Tribulation album that came out this year. Cavernous and slayin'
4.0
25Moral Collapse
Moral Collapse

This is a weird one folks. A bit more on the technical side but with a raw hardcore edge, especially when it comes to vocals. Plenty of strange noises and soundscapes, not too long, and definitely worth a spin.
3.8
26Cannibal Corpse
Violence Unimagined

Dude. This band ages like a fine wine. Or maybe they just don't age at all? This thing is so fucking energetic and crushing that you'd think they're all in their mid 20s. Corpsegrinder is closer to my grandma's age than he is to my age and dude still sounds like an absolute monster. It's so weird hearing output so good from a band that has been doing death metal for over three decades. This very likely just became my new favorite CC record.
4.25
27Crypts of Despair
All Light Swallowed

Blackened death metal with some elements of grind on occasion. Absolutely punishing, don't sleep on this one!
3.9
28Inoculation
Celestial Putridity

Very technical, loving the drums and guitars here. Vocals are nasty too. Nice job, thanks
3.85
29Dead and Dripping
Miasmic Eulogies Predicating an Eternal Nocturne

Absolutely filthy
4.0
30Celestial Sanctuary
Soul Diminished

It's a bit homogenous, but it's a head banger.
3.6
31Cerebral Rot
Excretion Of Mortality

This is one repulsive morsel! Can't find anything to complain about here. Cool riffs and pretty old school.
4.0
32Witch Vomit
Abhorrent Rapture

Another EP here, but worth a spot on the list. Eat up boys, it's Witch Vomit. I only wish it were longer.
3.9
33Ghastly (FIN)
Mercurial Passages

Some shrill higher pitched guitars, fairly melodic at times. Production isn't my favorite, but a pretty talented group all around.
3.6
34Alluvial
Sarcoma

Features ex-members of Suffocation and The Faceless, so you know there are some years of experience here. Big, deep vocals with very capable guitarists. Check this one out.
3.75
35Mental Cruelty
A Hill to Die Upon

Deathcore with big black metal influences and black metal-esque album art! Gotta throw in some ridiculous deathcore once in a while. It gets old pretty quick with extremely layered vocals in every song but this is a fun one to blast in the car.
3.7
36Cadaveric Incubator
Nightmare Necropolis

Cookie monster death metal. I like the name and album art. FFO Sanguisugabogg I guess? Enjoyable but basic and somewhat forgettable.
3.35
37Universally Estranged
Reared Up In Spectral Predation

Space-themed metal! These guys only have like 700 monthly listeners on spotify so go show 'em some love.
3.8
38Noctambulist
The Barren Form

Atmospheric and dark yet a bit overproduced. Worth a couple spins at least.
3.65
39Drawn and Quartered
Congregation Pestilence

Kinda surprised the rating on this one isn't higher! Dudes have never gotten a ton of attention but are pretty much veterans at this point. OSDM in the vein of Immolation. I would eat pizza to this album.
3.75
40Diabolizer
Khalkedonian Death

These boys like to shred. Possibly the only Turkish death metal I've knowingly listened to? Prod is a little too crisp and clear but still plenty to like here.
3.7
41Sallow Moth
Stasis Cocoon

Death vocals with some pretty melodic/progressive instrumentation. Sometimes capturing kind of a heavy metal feel. Relatively short (I think 38 mins?) making it a good one to flip over and spin again after the first listen though.
3.8
42Night Crowned
Hädanfärd

Black death. Fast and furious, perhaps a little overproduced and a little hollow.
3.7
43Ophidian I
Desolate

Extremely fast, technical, melodic. 0% chance the drums are real. But guitarists and vocalist are great.
3.75
44Dungeon Serpent
World of Sorrows

Some throwback grime with a touch of melody. Cool production, only one or two tracks I didn't really care for.
3.6
45Wizardthrone
Hypercube Necrodimensions

Such a fun record. Goofy but totally slays. Gotta love the band and album name in all their glorious cheese, and the symphonic elements really work here.
3.85
46Cognitive
Malevolent Thoughts of a Hastened Extinction

If you asked me what modern death metal sounds like, I would probably show you this record. The guys who made this probably smell bad and probably love deathcore. And that's all fine and dandy. Might not be my favorite "sound", but the musicianship here is solid and songwriting is decent.
3.5
47Necrogod
In Extremis

In terms of quality, this one is a wee bit on the low end of the scale. Sounds like a band just starting out, yet they've got chops. The vocals....are kinda strange for the genre. I could see their next release being a winner with some higher production quality.
3.25
48The Devouring Void
Hypnagogic Hallucinations

Blackened death from Portugal. They sounds like hard workin dudes. Check it
3.6
49Atvm
Famine, Putrid and Fucking Endless

Weird album. Sensing an identity crisis here. The songs are kind of sloppy and meandering, enough to be considered proggy but not in the way you'd normally think. Vocals are typically "death metal vocals", but instrumentally it doesn't really follow suit. Not sure what to think of this, but I have little desire to revisit.
3.2
50Tombstoner
Descent to Madness

Love the name, love the artwork, love the instruments. But the vocals are almost more suited for metalcore or hardcore, and it really throws me off.
3.5
51Galvanizer
Prying Sight Of Imperception

No frills no nonsense d e a t h m e t a l. A tasteful amount of grind without going too far that direction. Good riffs and somewhat original ideas (without overstaying its welcome) makes butt a glad boy.
3.9
52Swelling Repulsion
The Severed Path

This one grew on me. From a writing standpoint this is excellent, but had trouble getting into it because the guitars are sooo sticky. Can't think of any other word. Listening to them is liking watching a dog lick his chops 3,000 times to clear the peanut butter. Which is too bad, because the notez themselves are great. But yeah overall had a positive experience with this one and it's nice n short.
3.6
53Stortregn
Impermanence

melodeath with vocals that add some black metal spice. Top tier musicians here, lots of variety between the tracks, and overall can't find anything to complain about.
3.85
54Graveslave
No Center

These guys show promise, but this was uneven as hell. When they're going for straight up dm, they do it pretty well. But overly layered sloppy vocals make it sound like they're still trying to outgrow deathcore or something, so there's a constant tug of war going on here. Sweet art tho.
2.75
55Qrixkuor
Poison Palinopsia

YES. This is the kind of shit I get excited about. The artwork don't lie. This is claustrophobic yet massive, and incessantly menacing. You can really feel the heat from the earth's mantle on your face during this one, yeah. Two songs, but each one clocking in at 24 minutes. Ambitious and so well-executed! I've listened to this like 7 times today.
4.2
56Intestinal Hex
The Exalted Chambers of Abhorrence

A true sludgy Canadian mess! They have a unique sound that I would try to actually describe if I wasn't so tired. Short album, no reason not to give 'er a spin. Yay.
3.9
57Gosudar
Morbid Despotic Ritual

I guess we're just going international tonight because this one is from Russia with love. They nailed the old school sound here. If you told me some Floridians made this in 2002 I wouldn't question it for a second. Another short yet very cohesive record, where every track fits real well. Doesn't attempt anything risky and instrumentally they never show off, but it's tried and true.
