Death Metal of 2020

Appropriately in a year that saw a pandemic overrunning the world, the roster of death metal releases was impressively strong. Top twenty with descriptions and are more strictly ranked, rest with sub-genres/loosely ranked.

death/thrash
20Draghkar
At The Crossroads of Infinity

Blackened death metal with melodic touch that has some leans to Arghoslent or Grand Belials Key. Their EPs released before this are also very much worth the time.
19Evulse
Pustulant Spawn

Boiling, caustic shit from the depths of the sewers. Need a full length from these guys.
18Clairvoyance
Demo

Filthy demo from yet another band to watch out for.
17Cosmic Putrefaction
The Horizons Towards Which Splendour Withers

More of that spacey void shit that has been taking the dm world by storm as of late. Idk how one man pulled this off, but it's damn good.
16Tzun Tzu
The Forbidden City

Another band that has been around for awhile and received little attention. Lower end is pounding and technical riffs with some leans to bands like Cryptopsy.
15Mortal Wound/Gutless
Gutless / Mortal Wound Split

Favourite split of the year from two of the best up-and-comers in the scene. Both ends are terrific, but Gutless' side stands out in particular.
14Black Curse
Endless Wound

Holy shit the vocals. Fucking madhouse.
13Obsecration
Onwards the Mystic Paths of the Dead

Band has been around a long time, but this may be their most standout release of them all. Lots and lots of riffs.
12Intellect Devourer
Demons of the Skull

This has members of StarGazer. If that doesn't pique your interest, listen to StarGazer and get back to me. Definitely more straightforward than the aforementioned band, but certainly comparable in quality.
11VoidCeremony
Entropic Reflections Continuum: Dimensional...

Some of the best old school tech death worship to come out in some time. Bass work is absolutely nuts.
10Proscription
Conduit

Blackened blend of Immolation and Adversarial that will undoubtedly kick your ass.
9Imperial Savagery
Lashing the Feral Swine

A criminally underrated band here and elsewhere. Raging vocals and furious riffing aplenty.
8Undergang
Aldrig i livet

Quite possibly their best release since their debut. Still the same crunchy, filthy aesthetic, but adding a few more esoteric aspects here and there.
7Defeated Sanity
The Sanguinary Impetus

The best brutal dm band continues being the best brutal dm band. Songwriting is tighter than the asshole of a tick.
6Had
Had

My favourite EP/demo of the year. Blends elements of several of the best bands in the scene such as Dead Congregation and Hyperdontia into their own brand of spiralling, rolling goodness.
5Faceless Burial
Speciation

Chunky as fuck. Get all of their other releases as well if you haven't, you won't be disappointed.
4Gorephilia
In The Eye Of Nothing

This is the album Morbid Angel should've released in place of Domination or after Formulas.
3Cryptic Shift
Visitations from Enceladus

Think if Vektor added a healthy dose of death metal to their picture with less screechy (and some would say, less annoying) vocals.
2Undeath
Lesions of a Different Kind

Knowing what this band was capable of with their two previous EPs, it's nice to see that they lived up to the hype with their first full length. Catchy riffs galore and some of the best gutturals out there make this a must listen.
1Ulcerate
Stare Into Death and Be Still

Best release by them IMO since Everything Is Fire, the title track is one of the best songs they've ever written and the added melodic touches are a perfect compliment to their apocalyptic, bleak songwriting.
