Trif's 20,000 Party π₯³β
20,000 comments came and went! These songs all were special to me either at one point, or they still are. Kind-of-but-not-entirely chronological order of discovery. |
1 | | Within Temptation Mother Earth
2000
Symphonic metal
The Netherlands
MOTHER EARTH
This was my fave song ever when I was a tiny Trif, during my teens. Oh how much I have heard it. My whole room was full of Sharon den Adel posters (and Robert and the gang of course). |
2 | | Moby play

PORCELAIN
Yeah, another Trif classic. Still like Moby a lot, but as a kid I was crazy about him. |
3 | | Daft Punk Discovery
2000
House/Disco
France
ONE MORE TIME
I vividly remember lying in a tent in Southern France, when on holiday with my parents, and somewhere on the camping site this track was playing during the kiddy disco. A huge banger. |
4 | | ABBA Super Trouper
1980
Pop/Disco
Sweden
THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL
I get so nostalgic by ABBA. Still do. Listening to those horrible A-Teens covers when I was a tiny Trif, hearing Happy New Year every New Year's Eve. That opening slide of Dancing Queen. The Rest of Dancing Queen. The darkness of S.O.S., singing along to Super Trouper as a kid without even knowing English so Kidzamdollabymmmeee-ing with full force. But this one is so nicely dramatic. Love it. |
5 | | Rammstein Reise, Reise
2004
Neue Deutsche hΓ€rte
Germany
Dalai Lama
Also a teen-Trif favourite. Lights out, headphones in, let the creepy story take you along. I vividly remembering spending many hours on reading what the story was about, with the ErlkΓΆnig etc. Super cool. |
6 | | Cradle Of Filth Midian
2000
Symphonic metal
UK
TORTURED SOUL ASYLUM
Those final screams, where Dani goes all "Midiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan", oh man. They were my favourite band from 15-18 years old or something. I loved them so much. Still do! |
7 | | Black Sun Empire Driving Insane
2004
Drum and bass
The Netherlands
STASIS
So many evenings a year were spent at Tivoli Oudegracht during the monthly Blackout D'N'B parties. This track was one of my faves. |
8 | | The Prodigy Music For The Jilted Generation
1995
Breakbeat
UK
FULL THROTTLE
Still vibe hard to this album. A classic. 16 year old me thought the same. |
9 | | Opeth My Arms, Your Hearse

WHEN
So many great memories to discovering Opeth. MAYH clicked when listening on my discman while sunbathing on the roof. What a record. |

THE LITTLE THINGS GIVE YOU AWAY
Heard this a million times. Afternoons of making homework with this on repeat. You all have these songs. Still gives me goosebumps. Loved LP a lot when I was just out of primary school (cute!), back when their debut was released. This particular song has stayed with me through the years. |

13 | | Portishead Portishead

DROWNED WORLD/SUBSTITUTE FOR LOVE
When I was little I thought this was the best album ever. For this reason it is still dear to me. And the fun part is that it is in fact quite good! |
17 | | Miles Davis Kind Of Blue

Like for so many, this album kindled my love for jazz. And All Blues specifically mesmerized me. I grew up with this album, wouldn't have it any other way. |
18 | | Nightwish Once

19 | | Coldplay Parachutes

DON'T PANIC
Another album that I totally grew up with. This one was so important to me. Is, actually. It always calms me down. Super aptly titled opening track, and one of Coldplay's finest moments, right there opening their debut. |
20 | | Pendulum Hold Your Colour
2005
Drum and bass
UK
HOLD YOUR COLOUR
The three albums Pendulum released were a huge part of my teens. I remember listening to In Silico on repeat for days. It were the more atmospheric tracks (Sounds Of Life, Plastic World, Still Grey) of the debut that appealed to me most though. The t/t is completely amazing. |
21 | | Dimmu Borgir Spiritual Black Dimensions

23 | | Riverside Second Life Syndrome

SECOND LIFE SYNDROME
Loved this track, and Dance With The Shadow, and their softer songs (Conceiving You, I Turned You Down), and had them on repeat forever. |

My first real shoegaze experience. Still remember sitting behind my computer in the middle of the night, staring to a YouTube video for this track which showed stars and galaxies forever zooming in but not getting bigger. It was magical. |
26 | | My Bloody Valentine Loveless

LOVE THEME DUSK (M.I.K.E.S BROKEN RECORD MIX)
This track got me through many stressful situations. Ooooh boy! Remember having a crush on a dude and playing this for strength. Turned out he wasn't into me (or guys in general, big question mark?!) in the end (some more question marks?). Aaaw, I was such a goofy kid. This was when I was 16 or so, please remember that. |
29 | | Kraftwerk Autobahn

AUTOBAHN
My dad got me into this. I remember being in awe at age 13. How cool was it that they were simulating cars passing by on the highway! Such a weird thing, spending 20 minutes (!!!!) of music on this theme. I went with them on that adventure time and time again. |
30 | | Helium Vola Helium Vola

SELIG
A very cringy band, but I was such a big fan of this track. Medieval electronic music from Germany. Yes. I know. This track had me mesmerized at age 13 though. |

32 | | Kraak And Smaak Boogie Angst

IF I SURVIVE
I remember hearing this in a bar where we used to play Laser Games, and I just had to overcome my shyness and ask the barkeeper what they were playing. Super glad I did. This was on repeat a lot when I was a teen. |
40 | | Massive Attack Blue Lines

THE QUEEN'S REBUKE/THE CROSSING
I bought this record when I bought my first very own CD player. It is a lovely blend of folk and rock, very theatrical in its approach. I remember trying to figure out the story, spending many afternoons on doing so. |

FEELING GOOD
Nina is perhaps my favourite artist of all time. If I had to choose just one, it'd be her. So diverse, yet she excels in all those styles with incredible ease. A powerful, emotional, commanding voice and stage presence. Amazing piano playing. Everything was drenched with her own style. Truly special |

A perfect minimal techno track. One of my fave tracks of all time. The way the bassline is introduced about 3 minutes in. The drum-hiccup about halfway through. The perfect repetition. The Field at his best. My gosh. |

She is mesmerizing. So many evenings were spent behind YouTube, watching recordings of her live shows. They way she destroys these huge stadiums with her voice and her hair and her legs. No matter if she's 40, 50, 60, or even 70. Omg. |

This piece is so soothing. My goodness. It was one of the first bands my bf got me into way back 10 years ago when we first started dating. Special in that regard, and also because this is the absolute best this C Orchestra was ever going to sound. |
70 | | Indigo Jam Unit Pirates

PIRATES
He also got me into THIS (RE Cinematic Orchestra, one above). One of my fave bands ever, but I think everyone knows this by now. I go through several Indigo Jam Unit weeks a year, where I listen to nothing else but them. Those grooves are to die for. I could have made a list of all their songs instead. Music for my soul. |

UNTITLED 6
Everything seems to be in this song. Stumbled onto GAS through my immense appreciation of the Kompakt lable (which you can tell I've loved for a long time if you know how many artists are from that gang! OOOF!). He quickly grew into one of my fave artists. Something about that muffled, steady pulse and sampled/processed classical snippets. Too effective. |

Pristine, clear, sacred almost, and that immense techno beat. This is why techno is probably my fave electronic subgenre. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. |

Another highlight from my Trif-checks-BM-classics-and-falls-in-love phase which happened a few years ago. Still on monthly rotation, Bathory manages to be insanely catchy, nicely rough, super genuine and pretty goofy at the same time. A recipe for success in my book. |
