Sharenge 12.02.20	struggled to decide on which track to go with... not my favorite track on the album, but I ended up going with this particular one as it was the shortest - didn't want to break anyone's back with a 10 minute long track had been considering a Burzum track or something off Prurient's Frozen Niagara Falls, but I decided against it for something a little more chill and not so harrowing and abrasive... plus this only has 3 ratings on here and a lot of people know Burzum and Prurient (and the original track I was gonna pick that wasn't on YouTube was the original 2002 version of "Stays Demons" by Nadja... the album (Touched) got remade in 2007 and those versions of the songs are the only ones uploaded on YouTube right now from the looks of it... haven't listened to this version of the album but I believe it is quite a bit different)

Unobtrusive factory setting voice, occasional key textures that don't do much for atmosphere, rhythms that flirt with funkiness but come up shy of getting things moving. Couple hollers here and there are pretty cool. 2.5 2. Tanya Tagaq - All hazy and ethereal and a pretty damn singular voice to make it distinct and memorable. Compelling shit for sure, enough to know I'll come back to try figuring out how I feel 'bout the thing. 3.4 3. Smallpeople - Meh, minimalism on its own doesn't really feel cold, and don't hear much to add an atmosphere that might get it there. Gets a little closer at the halfway point adding the minor key synth vamp in the background, but still feels like a demo you'd pop on a phone in the middle of the night to remember a musical idea you could get to proper work on in the morning. And then the song ends and the sax decides it isn't quite done yet, bonus 0.1. 4.1 7. Indigo Jam Unit - We all got our short-circuits, shit that fast tracks a tune straight into our respective good-books. Free form Stand-up bass swings are one of mine. The way it still takes a moment here or there to find the negative space in the middle of a pretty busy groove is just the icing on the cake. 4.3

I like how the different pieces come in and out at various times as the song progresses; this should be in my library 4.2

Guess this is an instrumental, huh? Music does kind of go w/picture on the album cover of a boy and a girl holding hands and floating on the water. Almost 6 mins in. Guess this is the body of the song, not intro. It's pretty enough. Oops, just heard my daughter's bedroom door. Still have time. She has to use the facilities and such. Keep going, Mono. Maybe pick up the pace a bit, though. Percussion getting heavier. Think we're building towards the climax. 8 and a half mins now. Daughter's in the bathroom. You guys better step it up a little. Now this part feels like it's stuck in repeat. A bit too much cymbal for my taste. I get it, this is the big ending, but you don't have to be so noisy about it. OK. Ending now. Pretty enough, but I was hoping for more. 3.2.

Ashes in the Snow: I'm not into instrumental post-rock, I find it a bit boring. Mono is not an exception, even if I found that explosion on the seventh minute mark a pleasure. Mostly suprised by the dynamic drumming, rather than the tremolo picking. (3) 13. Jaago - Vocals really close to mourning, nice warm melody and then the song goes left-field. Awesome, awesome, awesome. (4.0) 14. Nice beats and buzzes, and as dedex says, it's quite atmospheric. I would probably appreciate it more in an album context rather than on its own. I was expecting sth to unfold towards the end, but it stayed on its track without any development, feeling like a short break. (3)

Been living out of the 12th floors of dingy apartment blocks for awhile now, and this certainly captures staring blankly out the November windows doing not much. 4.0 15 - Child of Cold - Dungeon Synth just doesn't hit me like it used to. The corny little tinkling key line undercuts the cold more than it helps it. Still has a certain nostlagia factor, but ehhh 2.5

Was watching a live cam the other night from Saint Petersburg, Russia. There was some street traffic, and a broad sidewalk that led into some kind of underpass (possibly into an underground train?). And it looked like there was a thin glaze of ice on the ground. And this guy came out of the underpass, apparently drunk off his ass. At first, he was moving slowly, and then he just stopped. He was teetering from side to side, and people (just a handful) were walking around him on both sides. And he was swaying, like he wanted to move on, but couldn't quite call up the mental focus to do it. He looked for all the world like the combination of the ice on the ground and his own drunken state were going to cause him to do a dangerous face plant right on the sidewalk. And I was trying to think of if there was anything I could do if he did, but what? How would I call a cop in Saint Petersburg? It's not like I speak a word of Russian. I watched him for like ten or fifteen minutes, until my son called me to do something and distracted me. I don't know if he fell, or if someone helped him, or if he finally somehow made his way home. This song was kind of like that. 3.1

I appreciate that the filth is balanced, and not lo-fi for the sake of it. Generally, though, I'd want it with a general climax - not poignant per se, but leading somewhere. 3.0 ViÃ°rar Vel Til LoftÃ¡rÃ¡sa - Wow, such a pleasant surprise. This felt like a celebration of melody at times, with its floydian passages and the orchestral elements. Beautiful, beautifu, a thousand times beautiful. I always knew I should check Sigur Ros, but thought I wouldn't like them because I'm not in post rock. However this might be my top submission so far. 4.8

Loses a little of its punch halfway through, when the call and response stops for a bit, but it's still pretty cool. Maybe I'm just musically starved because I haven't been loving this month so far, but I'm thinking 3.7.

This is nice, with the walz-like piano chords in the background. Now the lady is gurgling. I don't know whether I liked that. 3.2 Smallpeople - "Black Ice": Ooooooh I like this beat and this bass. Hmmmmmm. Yes yes yes I like everything about this. Lovely and sparse and open and greeeaaat. Occy I think you'll win this month, if we ignore Het Regent Zonnestralen. Plus I've always felt German is a super nice lovely language, especially suitable to music. Don't know why. And I don't know why so many of you were so indifferent to this. Looks like KETA isn't the only cray cray person here. 4.1 Rubio - "Nino Iceberg": This is nicely mysterious and sensual and love the instrumentation and yeah I like this. It's cool. Why haven't you rec'd me this before JOHHNNNYYYY!!!! >:-( 4.1 Acda en de Munnik - "Het Regent Zonnestralen": Perfect classic Dutch song, mega lovely story, we blasted this in the car always. I cannot not 5.0 Infinit' - "Red Bull": Haha such a dedex track! That bass is lovely. Synths are nicely goofy. Dude has a good vibe too. Like how they mix hip hop and funky/r&b-ish stuff. He doesn't make French sound as beautiful as it could be though. A bit heavy handed and rough. 3.3 The Felice Brothers - "Goddamn You, Jim": I don't like these kind of vox, too fragile and soft and whispery and falsetto to me. Instrumentation is nice, especially in the latter half, deep and dark. 3.0
Trifolium 12.26.20	Mono - "Ashes in the Snow": I've never been a big MONO fan. This doesn't change that I'm afraid. Don't know why, but rock without vocals doesn't sound right to me. Narrow minded, probably, but it's true. 2.5 Lifata - "Jaago": Kind of a slow start, then some really heavy Radiohead vibes. Warm and Four Tet-ish in a way. It's nice, but I don't really like the muuuuh muuuuh synth, the moody one. 2.9 Council Estate Electronics - "Type LK-60YA": Thumping beat is nice. Some cold far away synths, which are als nice. The mix is preventing me from really loving this, although I certainly like the track. It's a little too oversaturated I guess. But perhaps I'd like it on another day, who knows! 3.3 Cain - "Child of Cold": Haha, sounds like a dark Christmassy retro videogame. Not too bad, but a bit long. 3.0 Fastpoholmen - "Himlen": Guitar is nice, crisp, and clean. The melodica (?) isn't my thing though. It's kind of weirdly Jason Mraz in a way too huh that's weird. Also love the dubby bass haha. 3.2
Trifolium 12.26.20	Trist - "Nostalgie II": The riffs in the first few minutes are nicely triumphant and upbeat, surprisingly so! I like this more than I thought I would. 3.4 Sigur Ros - "Vidrar Vel Til Loftarasa": Hmmm. I don't know. It certainly takes its time. Don't like the vox at all. Plus it is kind of overly sweet and melancholic and no. Don't like how it's mixed either. 2.4 Ta Paidia Tis Paleotitas - "Ta Pligomena Minimata Anatheorimena": Cute cover. Yet another super long track AAAAH! I like the heartbeat-rhythm and the piano is nice too, the vox aren't really my thing. It's funny where this is going, nicely dramatic. 2.8 Nepal - "Rien d'special": Haha, that first 'space' combined with introducing the beat was super nice. Like the feeling of this, the piano in the background. Yeah that's lovely. Super light and floaty. He makes French sound so much better than the last dude, shows why I love the language. Production is absolutely, totally wonderful here. Light as a feather, yet with enormous amounts of space and body. Love it. (Perhaps I should have given an even higher rating!!!) 4.1 Fela Kuti - "Eko Ile": Yeah funky nice. Saw one of the Kuti's live in Amsterdam which was a total party. They certainly got that from their father. Love the horns especially. 3.8

Einsturzende Neubauten - Quiet strings, guy singing softly in German. Some people singing quietly behind him in English. Now he's getting excited. Still slow, though. Now his background people are kind of humming. Not an especially compelling track. Fuck, it just got loud and faster, so I had to turn it down. Making Myss Keta look good. 2.0. 1986 Omega Tribe - Mostly synth intro. Kind of dancy, and definitely yes, it's mid-'80s. Supposed to be Japanese. Sounds English, though. OK. Guess this is the pick of a middling litter today at 2.5.

Maybe next time we do a folk songs month? That would be neat. 3. UNA DONNA CHE CONTA - Ahh, Myss Keta again, welcome back. Wanna be my digital alarm cloc- WHO SAID THAT, 'TWASN'T ME! 3 Zebulon - of the tracks that did nothing for me, this nothinged the most 2 Super Chance - '80s synth right out of a commercial. Not displeasing, but not enthusiastic about this either. 2.5 Extreme Cold Weather - okay, so I'm not into heavy metal that much, and this sounds like proto-black, and I'm not sure wether it's the corny lettering or the whatever title, but I like this one. 3.5
Divaman 12.27.20	Messiah - Cold winds and slow electric guitar. Now it's faster electric guitar. Fairly obnoxious vocals, kind of low in the mix. Now the song has slowed down and gotten softer. Oops, it just took off again. This is an average song with sub-par vocals. 2.3
Divaman 12.28.20	Caspian - Swirling synth sounds. For a while. Gradual drum beat fades in. Hmm. According to the list entry, this is an instrumental. OK. Oh shit, it's almost 9 minutes long. Guess that's why they feel they can fuck around with the intro for so long. Yeah, I don't have anything important to do today, right guys? I guess these guys do nothing but instrumentals. They're doing the whole Night Verses thing. Singers are annoying, right guys? Anyway, less than 4 mins in, and the track seems to have taken off. There's a lot of big sound, and a little noodling around inside of it. Anyway, once the track gets going, it's decent, even if it does finish up with a kind of loud, obnoxious splash, then just kinds of peters out. But get yourselves a singer, boys. 3.2

And exactly like all of her others? 2.9 Einsturzende Neubauten - "Zebulon": Never really checked them, despite hearing about them very often. Like the use of silence in this, but don't like the vox. Perhaps I'm not in the mood for looser music, but I think this is a little too sound collage-y for today. 2.5 1986 Omega Tribe - "Super Chance": Nice 80s vibes. This is kind of nice. Weirdly nostalgic feeling despite I've never heard it. Such a Japanese mood to go for. It doesn't keep my attention for its entire duration but it is nice. 3.1 Messiah - "Extreme Cold Weather": LOVE the cover. That intro riff is superb. Most of it is really nice, but I'm not so sure about the vocals. Solo is amazing though, and god those drums and riffs sound lovely during the solo. HMMM. 3.8

Hmmm, maybe not that much. 2.6 Asgier - "Glaedur": Yeah this man. I know him. Not too bad I guess. But some serious sad guy with a guitar vibes, and I'm not too big a fan of those. Especially in the overly sweet falsetto choruses. The slightly darker guitar at the end of the chorus is somewhat of a saving grace though. 2.8 Haniya Aslam - "Ayi Re": Lovely rhythm and that bass is superb too. Love the tone of her voice as well. Yeah this is mega cool. I thoroughly enjoyed this, will check the full album before the year runs out (so today or tomorrow!). The production is so warm cosy snugly lovely too hmmm yes. 4.0 Vali - "Et Ensomt Minne": Too on the nose for me. Can't really listen to this stuff, too kitschy I think. Especially with the violins. 2.2 BONUS: Burzum - "Erblicket die TÃ¶chter des Firmaments": Yup, a classic Burzum track from an incredible BM album. Not one of this albums highlights for me! 4.2

Found it extremely emotional as well, and the playing was so tight and multilayered, it was a whole experience. Thank you! 5. GlÃ¦Ã°ur - this is smooth and the vocals remind me of Leprous' Einar, but maybe that's just me. I appreciated the quiet violin-like undergoing melody, coming forth or receding to the back. It ends too abruptly though. 3.5 Et Ensomt Minne - Ahh, Vali... Used to listen to them quite a lot when I joined Sputnik, as they were - correctly - recommended as similar to Empyrium. I still get nervous with that scandinavian darkness that's all too unfamiliar to my mediterranean ass when I put these romantic, folkish songs on. Like, I feel the pagan element coming out of me, and I really don't know to what exact memory it connects me with. Anyway, Vali are always appreciated. 4.2 Burzum - I refuse to listen to this shit.

Excess in boring. 2.4/5 "GlÃ¦Ã°ur" Strings are always nice and the beeping is odd enough to stand out. Vocally this is pretty uninteresting, but it's pleasant background noise I suppose. 2.9/5 "Ayi Re" Damn that bass is awesome. The rest of this is fine. 3.2/5 "Et Ensomt Minne" Sad folk music that makes me think of a rainy day. Cool song, not in love with it, but it's cool. 3.5/5 "Erblicket die TÃ¶chter des Firmaments" Scratchy Satan growls over some slow fuzzy guitar. Man, why is black metal the worst genre ever? And the drums sound like someone scraping aluminum foil for and it's irritating. 1/5

Sharenge 01.02.21	#17 doesn't really go anywhere and I feel that so yeah, p good kinda comfy for a "black metal" it's like I walking through the snow but I nice & cozy too... could be nice to do the sleeps to 3.6 #18 even though I have this album and I've listened to this album, I'm still very much not familiar with this song... probably usually either don't make it this far or I've already gone to sleeps by the time this song plays (over 40 minutes into the album)... listening now and yeah, it's nice... the ending is quite nice... but I'm kind of cool just having it play while I do the sleeps too 3.6 #19 ah alright, it's my turn now... I refuse to listen to this shit!! jk this is alright could probably get a little more out of it if I did the Greek but overall this just really isn't my teacup 3.3

So, just to be clear, as I explained to Divaman, the song is so much surrounded by the artist's history, that it's become unlistenable to me. It's not that I think the song per se is shit (I tried for a minute or so, and it wasn't bad, tbh), it is that I really have no appetite for a stubborn neo-nazi's work. Maybe some other time, for encyclopedic reasons, but currently no. Besides, if I did rate it, I would give it a 0.5, so that wouldn't be fair either...

Pangea 01.05.21	Super change - I love this, it makes me really happy. 4.3 Extreme Cold weather - idk about this, it some cool aspects (the solo is nice), but the vocals are so weirdly drown out. Generally don't like the production on this. 2.5 Arcs of Command - i don't really like their 2020 album but hopefully this can sell me on the band. I don't dig the synth-y stuff in the beginning but the song does have a really nice build-up. the latter half of the song is pretty awesome actually 3.5 GlÃ¦Ã°ur - this is pretty but i don't really like his voice sadly, it's a bit too thin for me. 2.8 Aye Re- That is some dope bassline. Nice guitar melodies too. I'm not 100% feeling the vocals but overall this is really good 3.7 Erblicket die TÃ¶chter des Firmaments - The guitar is nice hypnotic and filthy, but while i have gotten used to bm vocals, this takes it too far. They sound awful. 2.3
