2020 // 25 UNDER 25

Here are 25 albums for 2020 that have under 25 sputnik ratings - meaning they are being overlooked and you should check them out! Ranked according to preference.
25Keaton Henson
Monument

So soft-spoken that it almost becomes background noise at a few junctures - but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
24Sa-Roc
The Sharecropper’s Daughter

A little long and drawn out but still really, really solid hip hop. Great to hear more females coming to light in the genre, too.
23Klo Pelgag
Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs

Eclectic pop records always hit harder in foreign languages, don't they?
22Biesy
Transsatanizm

Aggressive pseudo-black metal with some avant-electronic thrown in the mix and a scathing vocal performance. Unique, if nothing else.
21Airbag
A Day At The Beach

Not a prog rock guy at all, but this isn't so reliant on the machinations and over-production that plagues the genre's weightiest releases. This is, like, lowkey prog at best. But it's good.
20$ilkmoney
Attack of the Future Shocked, Flesh Covered, Meatb

Stupid name and album cover aside, this is surprisingly competent and well-delivered hip hop with an often unconventional delivery.
19Boldy James and Sterling Toles
Manger On Mcnichols

Detroit represent. Great flow on most tracks and some really tight beats. Overlooked hip hop album.
18Material Girl
Tangram

Like a scrapbook of lots of little things I love. Messy at times, but that's at least *partially* the point.
17DJ Python
Mas amable

Elicits a great ambiance; calm, warm, trancelike.
16Osees
Metamorphosed

Like a modern-day Can, but more spaced out and psychedelic.
15Guitar Fight from Fooly Cooly
Soak

An emulation of early Midwest emo (think Cap'n Jazz or The Brave Little Abacus) with more harmony and less disharmonious vocals (which, for me, is a good thing).
14Haunted Disco
Commodore

Hypnotic and laid back quasi-pop; at a succinct twenty-four minutes, this is a super easy listen and massages the brain quite nicely.
13Endling (UK)
Proper Nouns

Sputcore - literally! Subdued dream pop, cloudy and sexy and tranquil in all the right ways.
12MSW
Obliviosus

Surprised this album has so few ratings given Sput's tendency toward metal releases. In fact, I think MSW and Hell are totally under-represented for a site so heavily entrenched in the genre(s). Anyway, good
11Lik
Misanthropic Breed

If any album this year were to rip your head off and shit down your neck, it'd be this one. I mean that in a good way, of course.
10Black Market Brass
Undying Thirst

Super chill aftobeat; blast this guy on max volume, zone out, and just let the funk flow through you.
9Matthew Tavares and Leland Whitty
Visions

Unctuous avant-jazz-fusion, what more do you need to know?
8exhalants
Atonement

Very raw, pulsating with an urgency that a lot of modern post-hardcore and noise rock bands are lacking. I should theoretically be more annoyed by the vocals here (if history means anything), but for some reason, they work.
7Gezan
狂(KLUE)

One of the most energetic records of the year, full stop.
6Panda Rosa
The Kinspiral

An endurance test, for sure, but an incredibly sprawling and rewarding journey filled with so many different genres, influences, and random shit that trying to explain it with words would be futile.
5Black Marble
I Must Be Living Twice

Lovely little EP of minimal synthpop; could almost be categorized as coldwave. Repetitive and chilly but also strangely uplifting in a weird, inexplicable way.
4John Zorn
Calculus

One of Zorn's less spastic records, showing that the man still has incredible jazz chops when he wants to. (Did anybody ever question that, though?)
3Died
Less Life

No frills post-hardcore, bordering on noise rock but less chaotic. Really, really well done.
2Lonker See
Hamza

Been championing this bitch since Q1 and y'all still ain't on board? Spacey jazz-influenced rock with a side of neo-psychedelia. More structured than their previous release, but also much tighter and more focused as a result.
1Soft Kill
Dead Kids R.I.P. City

Wonderfully atmospheric gothic post-punk with a dash of pop - for fans of The Cure and Motorama. This album is going to be woefully overlooked, I already know it.
