I can see that the term "progressive" gets thrown around a lot and a lot of prog metal bands don't have as many unifying characteristics like the other metal subgenres do, but groups like Leprous, The Ocean, Haken, Cynic, Opeth, Wilderun etc. should have some sort of classification due to their dissimilarity from other bands of their respective genres, more ambitious song structures, and "progressive" tendencies.

Most Dream Theater sounds nothing like Helloween, Gamma Ray, Hammerfall, Manowar, etc. To the extent those genres overlap is merely the extent to which most metal overlaps. I'm kinda ambivalent about speed metal as well, which I think of as a middle-ground between thrash and power metal. Whether that deserves its own sub-genre or not is debatable. All that said: arguing genres/labels is stupid in general, so disregard this post/list.

Grimlin 10.02.20	Speed metal predates thrash. Thrash was basically just a more aggressive version of speed metal. The war metal term and sound (pretty much) was first used in '87 by Holocausto (and solidified by Blasphemy a couple years later), and easily predates anything labeled as blackend death metal so you're definitely wrong about 1 and 2. Your statement for 3 if just retarded. And for 8, wouldn't it just be grind/grindcore? Pornogrind and goregrind are both pretty much just referring to subject matter.

The degree of accuracy to which its classification sonically diagnoses any sound? What makes a band Progressive Metal vs. Alternative Metal or Post-Metal? Is the nomenclature simply a way to pinpoint certain bands and musical trends along the timeline of music history (such as Grunge or Midwest Emo), allowing us to more. easily track its changes over time? Or is the classification more objective, with sonic criteria that can act as signifiers to identify the family tree of relatives and influences the music draws from? There are so many fascinating conversations imo to be had about music in a meta way, and I'd love to create a discord or forum to more openly and enthusiastically discuss such ideas with any interested, like-minded individuals.

Use context clues really, like if they're a music junkie like us, probably yes. But with radio listeners, they might just mean indie pop. OR they could mean "independent" as in "underground", which is still a valid descriptor imo. In either case, lots of big name indie acts tend to be both indie rock and indie pop: i.e. Arcade Fire and the countless bands that ripped them off.

ReturnToRock 10.02.20	Although the description for 1 is F---ING SPOT ON, I'll have to disagree. Speed metal definitely exists as a genre. Helloween, however, are not it. They were a power metal outfit from the off. A better example would be something like Attacker or Exciter. Also, 'glam metal' just refers to the heavier side of hair metal 9 times out of 10. So it really should be on this list. As should 'desert rock', which is just the traditional/dad rock end of stoner rock. Or how about 'female fronted metal', which can mean anything from Arch Enemy to Nightwish to Walls of Jericho (because those are all female-fronted) but is usually just code for 'symphonic metal that rips off Nightwish/Epica/Within Temptation'?
