08.10.20 | Seems like a pretty big handicap tbqh. Shes definitively not a one hit wonder except by this metric. Shes achieved mainstream popularity with literally her entire catalogue. It's a fair qualifying metric for the purposes of the comp but also an oversight that billboard top 40 has a broad enough purview to determine someones overall commercial success |

And I especially don't think that it can be argued that Black Panther was not a milestone in black cinema. I'm not even a fan of it, but denying the amount of inspiration it inspired in black communities is reductive and short-sighted to say the least. |

Minushuman24
08.10.20 | 1. Flagpole Sitta - So much fun and way ahead of its time. I think its no secret that this band deserved more attention and recognition for its impact on pop punk music.
2. Steal My Sunshine - unbearable. I hate it. The worst part of this song, besides the vocals, is the fact that the outro chorus to this song is melodically really pleasant. I could actually see this being a great song if a competent band were to cover this. But we are stuck with this pile of garbage.
3. I'm Gonna Be - Wholesome goofy goodness. You'd have to be dead inside to not enjoy this song even just a bit.
4. Counting Blue Cars - Half decent post-grunge hosting a nice chorus and an appropriate amount of edginess for the genre
5. I'm Too Sexy - Honestly, this is probably one of the best joke songs ever written. They deserve all the praise they got for writing this song.
6. I Try - This song is timeless. It is one of those songs that everyone knows but no one thinks much about really, but god damn, it is absolutely brilliant. Her voice is perfect, and this song is so incredible.
7. Bittersweet Symphony - a meandering, lazy classic. It is hard to dislike this song, but if there's anything to complain about, it probably goes on a little too long. This band deserved more.
8. In the Meantime - This sounds like if a hair metal band realized that they were a dying trend so they decided to become an indie/post-grunge band. Instrumentally its a really tight song, but god damn I cannot stand the crooning vocals.
9. Baby Got Back - Booty is best, we all know this. This is an anthem for the people.
10. Rhythm of the Night - So incredibly early 90's, but this has to be one of the best eurodance songs ever put out for better or worse. Despite being relatively long, it fails to lose steam at all throughout its entire duration which is commendable. I like this the more I hear it. |
Minushuman24
08.10.20 | 11. She's So High - Better than any song Bachman-Turner Overdrive has every put out, and I actually like them. This is one of my favorite 90's alt-rock songs. It's both nostalgic and taps into the emotional side so effectively. I think I like Four Year Strong's version of this a tad more, but this song is so great.
12. No Rain - Timeless Classic. Blind Melon never got the recognition they truly deserved. Hoon was a brilliant songwriter, and one of the best out of the first half of the decade. This is my choice to win this entire tournament.
13. Criminal - I had actually never heard of this song prior to this tournament. I dig it, it sounds cool, it is cool, and definitely does not feel as aged as many of the other singer-songwriters in this bracket. I can't really say that there is as much to say about this one though, it is a tad forgettable, but an enjoyable song.
14. I Know - Another nostalgic song. I never really liked this song, and I still don't like it. It's a absolutely nothing mom-song that inoffensively makes you sit and wait for its 4 minute runtime to expire.
15. What is Love - This ultimately transcends paltry labels such as "good" or "bad". It is the best eurodance track every written, and I have yet to tire of Haddaway's desperate pleas for mercy. Call it "corny", call it "lame", but I adore this song to pieces.
16. Cannonball - This song oozes Sonic Youth levels of coolness. It's probably one of the best songs in this entire bracket; I hate to vote against it for what amounts to be a meme song, but I mean... That's what I am doing unfortunately.
17. Possum Kingdom - This band transcends the overwhelming mediocrity that came with the post-grunge wave in every single way. This isn't even their best song, but this song gets better with every listen. Its honestly shocking that it was as popular as it was. So good.
18. Sex & Candy - Fuck, I hate that these two songs are up against each other. They're both so cool for entirely separate reasons.
19. Groove is in the Heart - I initially wrote this one off as another goofy 90's, but damn, it really is better than just that. I love Q-tips verse on the bridge, and the bass is soooo infectious. Good stuff.
20. Jump Around - This song is a classic, and one of the best beats every produced.
21. 5 O'Clock - The biggest surprise of the tournament so far. I've never heard of this artist, and I have certainly never heard this song before, but god damn... This song is amazing. It seems to be a forgotten song, but everything about this song feels so heartfelt. The lyrics, her flow, the chorus, the backing vocals, the features and the beat. Everything is on point here. |
Minushuman24
08.10.20 | 22. Save Tonight - It is kind of hard to write about this one. It is catchy and has a sense of urgency to it that makes it an enjoyable listen. It kind of gives me vibes of alt-rock bands that are easy to roast, but deep down they have a song that you like but won't admit to it. Good song.
23. Life is a Highway - idgaf I love this song. Blame it on Cars. To this day I will belt this song out while driving. It is the definitive boomer song of the 90's that 40-something's will drink Michelob and Bud Light to while wearing boot cut jeans with crosses on the ass, and fuck it, I'm here for it man.
24. You Get What You Give - I like this more than I did in the first round. It still has an obnoxious quality to it, but I can't deny that a wave of nostalgia crashes over me with that pre-chorus/chorus. I could really do without the brief guitar wankery here and there, and some of the random high notes aren't very welcomed. That outro is strong too. Damn good pop song.
25. Lovefool - This song somehow reaches the same heights of enjoyable cheesy pop akin to Barbie Girl, whilst also being a genuinely good song that is crafted by some obviously talented musicians. Simple bubblegum pop, with a subtle and brilliant pop songwriting.
26. Getting Away With It - This is straight up some New Order-lite shit and I'm here for it. I dig this song quite a bit despite only vaguely knowing it. The only problem with this song is just how thin it is, and the fact that this song is two minutes longer than it really should be. But it sounds like New Order, so it's hard to hate.
27. What's Up - "meme song" fuck that, this is an anthem. It is weird, it is off kilter, but there is nothing else like it out there. I adore this song and it makes me wanna scream along.
28. Hay - Never heard this one prior, but it is great. It has some strong Flatbush Zombie vibes, I will be checking this album out I think. I could however do without the BOING sound effect though.
29. Your Woman - What a forgotten gem. This song is way ahead of its time and would not sound out of place in the company with the best of the Gorillaz.
30. I Wish - This matchup was one of the most difficult so far. I love this song, and it really does deserve to get further, but here we are. One of the best of the bunch.
31. Sunny Came Home - The epitome of 90's singer/songwriter that you don't know the name of but you recognize the song cause you heard it a million times. It's alright.
32. Torn - See the same for above, but better and more fun. |
