08.04.20 | I think the last-two movies suffer ever so slightly from an overreliance on CGI; obviously not to the extent of The Hobbit films. Fellowship feels authentic, whereas Twin Towers takes me out with those walking tree creatures. How the hell people can call Twin Towers the best of this trilogy is beyond me. Every movie is fantastic though, so you're only going to prefer one over the other in slight ways. Two Towers is my least favorite, but I still think it's a masterpiece. There's so many names, locations, events that you HAVE to remember. But it IS the definition of EPIC storytelling. rockandmetaljunkie
08.11.20 | @shadows
There's so much poetry, lyricism and fragile divinity in those texts, man. The way tolkien writes it...
I don't know. I don't think those stories can be faithfully adapted into films. Have you ever read Homer's Iliad & Odyssey? Have you read the epic of gilgamesh?
It's just so damn hard ro convey such lyricism into a set of swinging pictures, imo. Have you ever seen a faithful and accurate adaptation of illiad and odyssey?
An adaptation that somehow conveys all that you feel when you read these books?
No, of course not...
And, to an extent, it's reasonable.
If you think Tolkien has written these stories the same way he wrote tlotr, you are gravely mistaken. His writing is on a whole other level. I'm not kidding, i learned many archaic english words by reading that book. |

08.13.20 | "making films, that's what tolkien experts/translators and scriptwriters are there for"
I don't it's possible to use these texts and translate them into a motion picture. First of all, these texts are drafts, not reworked, polished & perfrected as the corresponding ones in tlotr. They contain numerous info, but very little dialogue and character developement something that is essential in filmaking. A lot of artistic license would have to take place which would piss the hardcore and loyal fans.
The second major obstacle is that of the running time. It would be impossible even for a 12 hour trilogy to tell the tale of silmarillion in full. A tv series (like got) could work better, but it would have to be pretty expensive.
You could take some of its individual stories like beren & luthien, or the fall of gondolin to the big screen, but the problem is that there are many intertwining charactets that pop out of nowhere. The reader knows who they are because their origins have been explained in previous chapters, but the viewers (assuming they're not all too familiar with tolkien's legendarium), would have no idea who these characters are. So a lot of backstory should be added which only augments the problem of the narration.
But above all these, my main concern lies with the adaptation. The book reads literary like the bible. Or like an archaic, epic poem. How do you take something like that and make it work into a 21st century film? How do you sell something like that?
Cause at the end of the day, it's all about making money.
One last thing:
How are you so sure that hollywood has the required screenwriting talent? Being a Tolkien fan, is one thing. Being able to translate a poem to the big screen is another.
Personally, i doubt hollywood has the appropriate screenwriters to make this work.
The talent just isn't there... |

rockandmetaljunkie
08.13.20 | Or there might be some guys with potential but we all know that the industry is interested only in moneymaking. And since that is their main goal, there is little room for bold moves and improvisations... |
rockandmetaljunkie
08.13.20 | Yes you did and i further explained why even that has its own difficutlies... |
ShadowRemains
08.13.20 | i mean the beren/luthien arc seems half reasonable to me, since it's mainly focused on the two protagonists against morgoth and sauron (oh and thingol, fuck that guy is an ass), aside from how it's written, although children of hurin might be a better adaptation in terms of writing style than beren/luthien
as for a few of the intertwining characters in beren/luthien, i think it would sort of speak for itself that finrod is a powerful hero of the noldor and that feanor's sons are dark/evil (and if you want to learn more about the doom of mandos and the silmarils, you go back and read)
no doubt it would be a monumental undertaking should it ever be done, then again there were the same concerns prior to the LOTR trilogy hitting the big screen (although you're right that if people think LOTR is something else, they don't know what they're getting into with the silmarillion)
speaking of that, i need to get the recompiled versions that chris tolkien recently published of the four core stories of the first age, i'm guessing they might be a bit easier to work with |
