06.21.20 | valid but 2 is 1 dont @ me |
aydross121
06.21.20 | Pretty respectable. I don't like the Great Annihilator as much as other people but it's a good album. Would have replaced it with Filth probably. |

06.21.20 | top 3 is top 3 though. |
Sinternet
06.21.20 | white light
that is all |
TVC15
06.21.20 | A trve patrician has The Burning World in their top 5 |
Gyromania
06.21.20 | 2 is 1 but white light is actually 1 |
MementoMori
06.21.20 | WL was probably a contender, but I think their gothic rock sound is not as fantastic as their more minimalistic experimental 'post-rock' approach.
Also, SftB is definitely 1, don't even @ me. |

06.21.20 | top 3 is top 3 definitely |

06.21.20 | Needs more FILTH |
NeroCorleone
06.21.20 | yeah Cop and Filth would both be in my top 5 |
MementoMori
06.21.20 | In terms musical intensity those records are worthy of the top 5, but in terms of compositional strength, scope and complexity, they pale in comparison to the other records on here I feel. |
tectactoe
06.22.20 | I mean I love TBK and THE SEER but I dunno if I'd call either of them complex. Most of the long tracks are the same, short musical passages over and over and over with only slight variations. Again, that borderline-drone structure is part of why I like those albums, but complex might not be the right word. (I'll give you SFTB, though.) |

06.22.20 | soundtracks is so inaccessible it is hard to call it their best. its a big fucking mess honestly |
MementoMori
06.23.20 | @tectatoe: in terms of composition and scale, I think those records are highly complex. The use of subtle dynamics alongside cyclical repetition, the sheer number of instruments and musicians present. Those records are pretty gargantuan.
@unclereich: Are you calling a Swans record 'too inaccessible'? Heresy I say. |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.23.20 | while it's obvs worthwhile and i don't wanna delegitimise it, there's a decent debate potential in how far Soundtracks can be considered an 'album' to begin with
"The use of subtle dynamics alongside cyclical repetition"
don't disagree in general, but there are repetitive albums that capture this far better. in TBK in particular I feel that the stubbornness of the grooves is a bigger deal than the variations, so not sure how helpful discussion about complexity is
"the sheer number of instruments and musicians present"
equally applicable to other groups you wouldn't describe as complex (gybe etc) - in fact, i think part of those records' merit is how complex logistics don't have much bearing on the complexity of the music |
bigguytoo9
06.27.20 | Yeah, To Be Kind deserves the spot, love that record. I would say 1-3 are all ranked well. Soundtracks is great! |
MementoMori
07.01.20 | @johnnyofthewell: I would argue swans does cyclical repitition far better than most groups I could think of. Obviously layering, compositional decisions and such are also important. GY!BE is super complex in the same way: compositionally. Instrumentally, perhaps not, which was my point. I think we actually agree here? |
