06.16.20 | I totally respect this ranking. I'm a big fan of 2 & 3. Xanadu is my all time favorite Rush track. But tbh I don't even like Moving pictures. Tom Sawyer just kinda annoys me. | FR33L0RD
06.16.20 | Rush is one of my life long fav. Switching places for 3 & 5. Great list, love it.
Moving Pictures/Hemispheres/Permanent Waves/2112 are all 5, classic, for me.
i can understand the annoyance about Tom Sawyer ;)

06.16.20 | Why do all the cool people here like such a tripe band?
An enigma that this band could write an album about and make a balls up of no doubt. | MementoMori
06.16.20 | @Zak: "Tripe"? Granted, perhaps some people overrate them, but they are legendary for a reason: musically, compositionally and stylisitcally pretty groundbreaking and highly appreciable.
@FR33L0RD: I can get over Tom Sawyer personally. It's probably a toss up for me between Hemishperes and pictures, I quite dislike permanent wave's lyrics (philosophically speaking, they're quite Randian, it's not my thing to say the least).
@Yahweh: Xanadu is probably my all-time favourite as well, but I think moving pictures is probably their most cohesive release.

06.16.20 | 5, 4, 3, and 2 are 1 | Ziggity
06.16.20 | Xanadu is my favorite track by them also. This is about spot on for my top 5. Moving pictures is just so damn good front to back. | Uzumaki
06.16.20 | 3,5,1,4,2 would be my personal ranking, but all 5 are top 5 Rush agreed. | AlexKzillion
06.16.20 | This is pretty much my top 5 as well except I'd sub Signals or Power Windows in for 2112. | Uzumaki
06.16.20 | Signals would be my sub if I had to choose one. | MementoMori
06.16.20 | I can see that. I would probably remove permanent waves instead, but oh well. | Sinternet
06.16.20 | zak is right | Titan
06.16.20 | Band is so tight, 3 and 4 aren't even top 5 | DoofDoof
06.16.20 | Thrush > | JokineAugustus
06.16.20 | 1 is 5 agreed | FR33L0RD
06.17.20 | Indeed, Signals, for me, can replace A Farewell To Kings at fifth place, PW at 3.
..and yes, Rush can probably write about almost anything.
(no more, RIP genius Neil Peart)
Rush had always been a controversial band. We are pretty accustomed to this fact.
Anyway, all great artist are controversial, so we will take it as a compliment ;)

06.17.20 | Hemispheres and Farewell are far and away 1 and 2 for me. | MementoMori
06.17.20 | @Jokine: I beg to differ.
@FR33L0RD: It is indeed true that all artists are controversial, but being polemic exclusively because you glorfiy hyper-conservative economic principles is not really a testament to subversive art, generally I prefer anti-conformism in my art, especially progressive rock. There is an incompatibility, I'd say, between conservatism and art seeks to transgress against musical conventions. Oh well.
So, I wouldn't necessarily say, taking an extreme example, that being a 'fasicst', adds to one's 'greatness' as an artist; it doesn't seem that supporting a totalitarian ideology, fundamentally opposed to artistic freedom is compatible with 'prog rock'. The same would go, to a certain extent, for conservatism and progressive rock.

06.18.20 | @Memento,
I got your point on the high polemic part.
Clarif. of my comment; i was referring to the controversy of the artist in the eye of the beholder. Controversy arise with success. More exposure of the artist, very often, create polarization of the observers in two or more groups. Of course, the artist will be put under extreme scrutiny. The interesting conclusion, imo, is that it is a naturally normal phenomenon. Fascinating. | MementoMori
06.18.20 | @FR33L0RD: Yeah, to clarify, I meant to say "it is indeed true that some (not all) artists are controversial". Some artists are more controversial than others, regardless of their popularity: if they're squarely apolitical or 'centrist', they would probably incur less backlash (if any). Then again, I know mainstream pop artists can also receive significant backlash. Nevertheless, I was merely suggesting that polemicism isn't a good thing 'a priori', and is viewed as positive exclusively by those that happen to agree (generally) with the polemic views presented by the artist in question.
To upset doesn't necessarily mean to subvert I feel and if that's one of the things you're generally looking for in art (I certainly am) then this distinction is of pertinence. | FR33L0RD
06.19.20 | Cheers m8, m/
...and nice selections, list of artists for your Top 5. Fun, cool stuff. |
