Bold isn't it. Also @Parks, I didn't want to lean too heavily into folky BM, especially while trying to encourage other genres as well. I'll also see how he bites with this before we move onto #2 etc. |
parksungjoon
05.11.20 | fair enough

05.11.20 | Isis are the ultimate metal gateway for nonmetal atmosphere junkies (excluding melodeath, which is also a solid option), but CoL make sense as a run-on |

05.11.20 | 8 is flat out cheating though. Thought I'd clarify that before someone accuses me of cheating. I own that shit. |
ReturnToRock
05.11.20 | I'd throw in some Finntroll, Claim the Throne, Norther (since he likes folk) or maybe some Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Tiamat, mid-period Moonspell for the atmosphere. Or try some of the more accessible goth bands, like To/Die/For or Beseech or heck, even HIM might be good for a complete noob. |
Gnocchi
05.11.20 | To be fair, I think the term noob wouldn't really apply here. |

05.11.20 | Lantlos - Melting Sun
I would try to entirely avoid harsh vox at the start. Or at least rec things that have minimal use of them. Don't underestimate how much of a total deal-breaker harsh vox are for so many people at the start of their journey in heavier music. Don't forget how much of an *acquired* taste it is for most people. |
ReturnToRock
05.11.20 | ^ This.
I can't tell you how many people equate metal (ALL metal) to 'that screaming shit'. Even styles metal fans consider borderline pop (i.e. screamo) are 'too shouty' for these people.
tl;dr do not underestimate how many people think early Paramore is heavy. |
manosg
05.11.20 | The term folk metal isn't used the same way as it did when the band who started it all released its best albums, but Skyclad should always be part of such lists man. |

05.11.20 | Ensiferum - s/t is a must when it comes to folk metal
|
Gnocchi
05.11.20 | --I would try to entirely avoid harsh vox at the start.--
Normally I'd agree, but the point here is to throw abandon to the wind and allow each of the genre's (extreme or not) into the fray.
--a must when it comes to folk metal--
To be clear, folk-metal isn't the point of this list. We're not looking for a niche specifically - it was simply a random factoid dropped in a summary. |

05.11.20 | Tbf I'd say that "noob" is pretty applicable since I could count the number of metal albums I've listened to on one hand
But thank you for this! Found my work from home soundtrack for the week, gonna dive in right away |

05.11.20 | Gonna chime in with my thoughts after every two albums. These are each after one listen, I'll update opinions the more I listen. Just a warning, I have none of the correct language to discuss any of this, so bare with me
Woodensthrone - I would definitely say this is a good starter palette option. I really enjoyed the contrast between the heavier sections and more melodic folk-stylings throughout. I actually don't mind harsh vocals, but they're more of a put-off for me when they're more constant. I'm a big lyrics guy and would say that's one of the big offputs for me with metal. I know the lyrics are normally pretty great, but also don't necessarily want to sit with lyrics pulled up while listening. I feel like this did a really nice job of incorporating the vocals as another instrument. The harsh vocals were paired really well with softer portions and I was surprised how well it worked even when the synth was in the mix. I'll be honest and say I don't get the more "pounding sections" where it's fast riffs and heavy footwork on the drums, but since they often weren't paired with vocals, it was a little easier to digest. I will say the whole thing sounds so dramatic - I couldn't quite tell how serious I was supposed to take it, if that makes any sense. Overall though, for sure an enjoyable listen and super far out of the realm of anything I've willingly listened to before.
We Lost the Sea - Holy shit. I loved this. Is this metal? Like obviously there were some heavy sections to it and harsh vocals, but it also created some of the most beautiful atmospheres I've ever heard this side of post-rock. I'm a big fan of mixing those beautiful atmosphere with the heavier vocals. The execution is very different, but that style sort of reminds me of the State Faults from last year, which I did love. There was so much variety in this, but it was somehow cohesive. Super expansive without sounding empty, but the parts that were clearly metal still fit in and added to the experience. Will be returning to this without a doubt. |

Daniel, you already love folk. Don’t get into metal. Seek a genre with less beards and bad footwear and incest implications. Be better, Daniel |
