04.03.20 | Sounds like a good way to spend the sudden free time. |
Gallantin
04.03.20 | Read A Canticle for Leibowitz if you haven't already.
The best sci-fi post-apocalypse novel that ever was. |
dedex
04.03.20 | Rendezvous with Rama is dope
I like Philip K. Dick's ideas, like The Man in the High Castle or Ubik
If you got some time, I'd also recommend Robert Silverberg - The World Inside (basically the human population lives in gigantic tours located in 5% of the world, the other 95% being used for agriculture). The concept is cool and there are some sexy moments here and there
Asimov's the GOAT though |
aydross121
04.03.20 | Both A Canticle and The World Inside sound interesting.
And yes, Asimov is the goat. |
TheSupernatural
04.07.20 | I read Blindsight by Peter Watts earlier this year, easily the most challenging scifi concept I've run into yet regarding extraterrestrial life. It's a bit of a mystery book but if you don't mind light spoilers about the mystery: what they encounter treats individual consciousness as a weakness and a disease.
There's some really good discussion about the Chinese box problem and I think it has a lot of implications about the future of AI. |
aydross121
04.08.20 | Blindsight is probably next on my list. I am on the final pages of Death' End, which is the third book in the Three Body Problem saga, holy shit that ending. |
aydross121
07.01.20 | A bit late, but I did read Blindsight, thought it was really good and would recommend it for sure. The language is a bit more technical than the average but gave it a realistic atmosphere. |

07.01.20 | A « Dyson sphere »is a hypothetical megastructure that completely encompasses a star and captures a large percentage of its power output. The concept is a thought experiment that attempts to explain how a spacefaring civilization would meet its energy requirements once those requirements exceed what can be generated from the home planet's resources alone. Only a tiny fraction of a star's energy emissions reach the surface of any orbiting planet. Building structures encircling a star would enable a civilization to harvest far more energy. |

07.01.20 | Ideas not from a book.
Freeman John Dyson FRS (15 December 1923 – 28 February 2020) was an English-American theoretical physicist and mathematician known for his work in quantum electrodynamics, solid-state physics, astronomy and nuclear engineering. |
aydross121
07.01.20 | Dyson sphere is a dope concept indeed. But yes it's way old and not from books. |
dedex
07.01.20 | Hey I'm currently reading The Gods Themselves! Great book, Isaac can do no wrong |
FR33L0RD
07.01.20 | Another great concept is the scifi teleportation machine making multiple copy of the same person. Resulting, in a branching of the person. The concept questions the uniqueness of the person(mind), scientifically and/or spiritually. The branche persons will experience a common past but different futur.
Cool thought experiment populating many philosophical essays, neuroscientists, scifi author and TV series like Outer Limits. |
dedex
07.01.20 | that's really interesting FR33, do you know any book about that kind of stuff? |
budgie
07.01.20 | scifi is irreligious |

07.01.20 | Nice dedex, that's probably my favorite of his, and I've read quite a bit. |
dedex
07.01.20 | First three Foundations are GOAT material to me, but this one is amazing. The dude is just too talented, every time I read a new book of his I think "maybe this time I won't like it that much" and every damn time I'm wrong |
aydross121
07.01.20 | The teleportation stuff Free mentions is always interesting too. I've seen it on Steven King's Jaunt. Most popular use of the concept was on the movie The Prestige I think. |
aydross121
07.01.20 | Just remembered that The Prestige was about cloning, not about what Free was saying.
This video explains the actual problem https://youtu.be/nQHBAdShgYI |
FR33L0RD
07.02.20 | Indeed, Asimov futur visions are genius stuff. ( i had read only Tome1 of Fondation)
The following Outer Limits S7-E8 « Think like a Dinosaur »Based on the short story by : James Patrick , is where i saw the concept, mention earlier. Some of The Great Courses i followed also talk about this concept; neuroscience debate about the brain/mind emergence phenomenon in the universe/muliverse, and philosophical thought experiment
{ btw, the human mind is one of many other possible ways that the universe/multiverse give rise for observing itself. }

aydross121
07.02.20 | It makes sense tbh.
If you believe that consciousness is just an emergence of a physical system (the brain), shutting it down for even a millisecond and restarting it will create a different consciousness that will think it's the original "you", which in a sense it is, but by the perspective of the first "you", you died. |

07.02.20 | "If you believe that consciousness is just an emergence of a physical system (the brain), shutting it down for even a millisecond and restarting it will create a different consciousness that will think it's the original "you", which in a sense it is, but by the perspective of the first "you", you died. "
yeah this is why fuck teleportation or cloning. but in any case our identity is a collection of memories with the illusion of consciousness. removes the personhood of us all ☹ |
FR33L0RD
07.02.20 | Dont be sad budgy The more, the merrier. Its an entrench paradox. We are unique on the ego (person/separation) side, but at the foundation level (no-separation) our identity is indissociable from the universe. Eternity is in the fusion of these two sides of our identity. Elegant Counterintuitive modern scientific explanation of the mysterious problem of existence. |

07.02.20 | c'est possible |

07.17.20 | Re-reading Blindsight. Honestly I feel like you have to go over it twice to catch all the subtle nods to some heavy spoilers later on. If you are into the nature of consciousness this book is a must I feel.
Also will try the sequel "Echopraxia". |
Egarran
07.17.20 | I like the farcasters in Hyperion. For example, every door in your house could be a teleporter to a room on another planet. |
zakalwe
07.17.20 | I read Rendezvous with Rama last week and loved it, I’m currently on Childhoods End which is even better. |
aydross121
07.17.20 | I'm actually just starting Hyperion right now, so far so good. |
Egarran
07.17.20 | Fuck yes it's good. That and the sequel are must-reads. Then it gets a bit slow imo. |
dedex
07.17.20 | I didn't really enjoy Hyperion tbh
twas like 10 years ago tho so maybe I should re-read it |
Deathconscious
07.17.20 | Fuck yeah, The Three Body Problem. Did you read the rest of the trilogy? Each book is better than the last imo. Fucking blew my mind, that series is brilliant. |
aydross121
07.18.20 | Yes I read the whole trilogy. I thought it was really fucking awesome |
zaruyache
07.18.20 | Rama is one of my favorites, 3 Body was also great tho I thought the ending of the trilogy was a letdown. I haven't read the canon fanfic they published yet, tho. |
aydross121
07.18.20 | I enjoyed the ending, felt it was appropriate. Sort of bittersweet and low-key. |
SgtShock
07.18.20 | I like Watts a lot. Echopraxia is quite arcane and hard to follow but it’s a fun ride. Freeze-frame revolution and starfish were both solid. Blindsight though... man, been looking for a book on that level ever since. Thought ship of fools was gonna be the one but it was a huge letdown :(. Currently starting the Area X trilogy (the film annuhilation was based off). So far it definitely has that ‘cold’ feeling Watts has in some of his works. |
aydross121
07.18.20 | Have you read any Greg Egan SgtSchock? I've seen it recommended for similar stuff but haven't read any. |
chchelse
07.18.20 | Been looking for something to read. Thanks for this guys. |
SgtShock
07.18.20 | I haven't heard of Egan but flipping through his short story synopses has me super interested. I will definitely check some this out. Nice rec aydross |
aydross121
07.19.20 | I was planning on reading Axiomatic by him later this next couple months, will see how it goes. |
aydross121
07.20.20 | I'm like a third into Hyperion. Suddenly realized that I knew about the Shrike and what it was, but I don't know where/when I got spoiled about it. Maybe a video or older cracked article about it. |
zaruyache
07.20.20 | frist two Hyperion are fantastic. The second half of the cantos are kinda goofy tho i still liked them. |
Egarran
07.20.20 | Goofy is not the word I would use.
Just ordered some Egan from the library. The name kinda stuck with me. |
aydross121
07.20.20 | Hyperion is kinda losing my attention a bit lol. I really liked the priest story but the next one (soldier falls in love) I thought was boring. Admittedly I think I enjoy hard-scifi fan a bit more than pure scifi. But will read the book at least for sure. |
aydross121
07.20.20 | But everything related to the Shrike is really dope. |
NorthernSkylark
07.20.20 | Dark.
it's so confusing, but i don't mind that tbh. |
Egarran
07.20.20 | Have everyone read Dragon's Egg yet? It really is a great little scifi. |
dbizzles
07.20.20 | The Shrike is a great shout. One of the coolest... characters in anything I’ve ever read. |
Egarran
07.20.20 | I get a slight back pain when reading about his tree |
aydross121
08.04.20 | Just finishing Axiomatic by Greg Egan. All I have to say is you guys have to get on it ASAP. |
SgtShock
08.04.20 | Three Body Problem was great. Thanks for the rec! |
dbizzles
08.04.20 | I just got that for my birthday. Going on a Hellblazer run and then I'm diving in. |
ChoccyPhilly
08.04.20 | ugh i should really read more |
Egarran
08.04.20 | Can't go wrong with Hellblazer. I need to read the rest of those. |
dbizzles
08.04.20 | I've collected all the trades up to #22 (reading #17 now a la Mike Carey). There are pre-orders up to #25 pushed out to the middle of next year, but that only goes up to issues 275/300. Stupid fucking DC doesn't have any information on publishing dates anywhere and I'm IMPATIENT lol. |
aydross121
08.05.20 | Shock that's awesome. Don't forget to check the sequels, the first book is the "worst" one tbh. |
Egarran
08.05.20 | Awesome dbizz, can I please inherit them if you have an (occult) accident? |
dbizzles
08.05.20 | Yeah, of course, so long as you aren't the one summoning the god damned spirit of Nergal to take me out. |
Egarran
08.05.20 | No no I'm done summoning evil spirits. Who knew THAT was a bad idea?? |
hel9000
08.05.20 | nice. i'm on a huge Clarke kick atm, going through the 2001 books.
one of favourite sci fi books is Canticle for Leibowitz. The Forever War is really neat and bleak too. |
Egarran
08.05.20 | Clarke is just great. I suspected he was an old weirdo because I grew up with his 'mysterious world' tv show, which was often awkward. But the books cannot be denied.
I recommend a book he did with Stephen Baxter: The Light of Other Days. Great concept. |
hel9000
08.05.20 | i will check that out after Childhood's End! |

Seems like there's going to be a three body problem netflix series lol |
Storm In A Teacup
04.25.21 | Reminds me of the not great ideas that ruined Prometheus. 😭😭😭 |
zaruyache
04.25.21 | i didn't really like the ending of the third 3-body book, but otherwise it was a fantastic series. |
aydross121
04.26.21 | Yeah, probably my favorite book(s) of the last decade, liu cixin is a madman |
aydross121
04.26.21 | @Storm, I think i enjoyed the movie, but mostly only remember the "abortion" scene, which is pretty fucked |
aydross121
06.17.21 | Anyone here recommends The Martian? Knowing the movie stars Matt Damon always made me feel like I'm going to imagine him as the main char, and I can't fucking stand Matt Damon |
Hyperion1001
06.17.21 | its dad scifi so if you dig that then youll like it
id recommend phase IV its about evil psychedelic ants. |
aydross121
06.17.21 | "evil psychedelic ants"
Sold |
Egarran
06.18.21 | The Martian is nice, confirmed.
But yes Phase IV just rocketed up on my list of must-sees. |
Egarran
06.18.21 | Nobody knows what you mean |
