Gallantin 02.24.20	Like every game they've done since Demon's Souls, it gets some things right and some things wrong. It breaks systems that worked well and fixes others that didn't. It's clear at this point that Miyazaki isn't actually focused on refining series problems and has more of a desire to make each game it's own thing, even if for whatever reason that means disposing of design decisions that worked well previously. It's hard to tell what goes through the design team's heads sometimes. It's clear their focus isn't on what I'd put it on myself, but it's just so weirdly inconsistent at times that it's hard to figure out what they're doing at all. Either way, despite the numerous issues I have with them, they still make some of the most enthralling gaming experiences I've ever had and Sekiro is an extremely good game despite all the issues I have with it. I can only hope they continue with new IPs and don't do anymore garbage sequels.

The games all have incredibly simple and basic combat mechanics. I've never understood what R1 spamming even means, there are only two attack buttons lol

Gallantin 02.25.20	My biggest problems with DS3 are things like why didn't they keep the wind-up backstab from Bloodborne when it fixed the issue of spammable backstabs, why are almost all the bosses big fast rolling simulators, why is the world design so linear, why is it trying to hard to fan service me, etc.

BB is no less deep than DS3 and leans more on reaction times, which comes to the same degree of engagement + the weapon choice in that game leads to such specific playstyles (unless you're a saw/kirk/ludwig geek) that the mechs don't have to be super fancy. i dig how it's focused on making the most out of a super fun pool of animations

Gallantin 02.25.20	DS3 isn't a good example to bring up when it just follows in BB's footsteps. Ultimately as the games went on they got harder and easier at the same time. As each game focused way more on delivering a dodge-heavy fast-build experience, the ceiling for entry perhaps got a little higher requiring new players to learn more things like reaction timing and whatnot, but flattens out quicker because...well...you can basically only do two things. Dodge and attack. Demon's and Dark Souls may have had very easy paths to cheese them with, but they also offered way more gameplay styles. Going through those games as a differently focuses class each time is a whole new experience. In BB it still has all these dumb RPG mechanics tacked on that are worthless in the type of game it is. You can boost stats if you want the game to be a bit easier but otherwise the RPG mechanics do nothing for the game. It was good that Sekiro realised this and leaned into the fact that it was a one-note action title, but then it also went too far by removing things like collectable outfits and weapons which decreases replay value too much. And yea DS3 is like yea we have all these options from DS1 but it doesnt matter because the gameplay is designed like BB. I rate BB so highly because it's a new IP and I don't mind that it tried something different. I like that they made combat more simple and based on reaction mechanics for it. But then when they take that style of gameplay and port it into a Dark Souls sequel it just feels so dumb. You can play different classes in DS3 but they all end up feeling the same when the game design forces you into those same reaction-based mechanics that all the combat and threats are designed around. Sekiro also improved the arcane system from BB in a great way. I wish BB had the same functionality as the prosthetic system for its arcane attacks. I think that really woulda upped the complexity of BB's gameplay overall in a good way. It wouldve made it more in line with the type of action game it was trying to be instead of the half-assed RPG it was. Even if you're doing a Logarius Wheel/Arcane build in BB the gameplay is still pretty one-note. But it works for BB. I like it. I also just wish they didn't fucking destroy the healing mechanics in that game.

DS1 and Demon's have cheese builds that can break the game but overall they're balanced better for difficulty that challenges different playstyles and builds, whereas the later games only serve one playstyle that greatly reduces the difficulty ceiling even if it does raise the difficulty floor a bit.

Gallantin 02.25.20	DS2's problems are actually pretty unique amongst the entire set of games because it's the only one not directed by Miyazaki. I don't have the will to bother discussing all the reasons I hate 2 rn. It had some cool ideas for an RPG (some even worked!), but overall it is a great failure and perhaps the game I hate most in the world.

Gallantin 02.25.20	I love playing heavy characters in DS1. My current character is STR/INT based so I'm wearing heavy ass armour with a tower shield, Moonlight Greatsword, and Zweihander. Very fun to play. Learning how to play the game based on blocking and slow attacks is also a completely different vibe and experience to learning how to play around dodges and quick attacks. It's like playing a different game.

Also my smough build eventually evolved into replacing the helmet with the mimic chest mask that steals your health just because it was the only thing that made the whole outfit look even more retarded. WatchItExplode 02.25.20	DS2 is fine and everybody should leave it alone. I probably like it more than 3 tbh. 1st playthrough of Sekiro right now. Game is actually killer and makes me feel like I'm steadily improving my skills which I haven't felt since probably DS1. Sekiro is right there with Dems and Dark as best From games. It's also gorgeous on the X, I keep stopping and taking screen shots. At Fountainhead Palace currently and just sit there panning around slowly.

The research tower, Lady Maria, and Ludwig fights are good. The research tower actually might be my favourite level design in all of BB. But aside from those two fights and one level, the rest of the DLC is complete shit filled with stuff that's basically just meant to annoy you and the level design is pretty linear and boring. The fishing hamlet is the best looking area in the entire series. I love everything about how it looks. But it's like the worst place in the game to play. Kos is a garbage boss and the sharkmen are actually even more garbage than Kos. It was like with the DLC they forgot at all what makes the games special and fun.
Gallantin 02.26.20	As for the level/world design of BB on the whole? I actually like it a lot. It's almost up there with Dark Souls and Demon's Souls. Dark Souls 2 and 3 have the worst level design of the series. The only area in 3 that isn't just plain boring is the cathedral, which is, admittedly, very very good. Sekiro's level/world design is cool too but suffers too much by not being very connected at all and suffers even more when you can't even walk backwards through some areas.

Sekiro's design mostly resembles DS2's in structure and its use of terrible shortcuts that are worthless, but its verticality and exploratory aspects are done much better which is what elevates it above DS2/3.
