02.20.20 | Relapse was the album that got me into Eminem, which was right around when it came out. I guess it holds a special place in my heart, but I would actually listen to Recovery over it | Assemblage
02.20.20 | My previous ranking I had Relapse at 5th (with MMLP2 and the first three above it) and Recovery was way higher as well. Relapse is really great once you get into the middle chunk of the album to the end, but Recovery has definitely waned the most for me. I still dig the songs but I can't listen to the whole thing front to back like (most of) the others. | nuklearmoose
02.21.20 | Yeah I definitely agree with Relapse. The back half is the best of the album, the sequence and sort of story telling that goes on really captivated me. Recovery was "relatable" at the time for me, but also had some really great tunes. I gotta listen to it again! Slim Shady LP was odd for me, I like the big hits but the deep cuts didn't really stick with me. Gotta listen to that as well | Larkinhill
02.21.20 | First three are correct and in the correct order, but no way is Recovery his worst. It’s not great or anything but it’s decent. That, Relapse and MMLP2 are more or less tied in fourth place for me, and the rest suck fairly equally. Revival sucks a bit more than the others though. | Larkinhill
02.21.20 | Relapse is somewhat underrated. I think it’s pretty good for the most part. A 3. | Assemblage
02.22.20 | Yeah, my older list I certainly had Recovery much higher, it was 6th before Kamikaze and MTBMB released. But as much as I do respect it, and understand its standard, the tone of the album kind of feels like its been rapidly outgrown over the last two years since my last list. Who knows, this could probably happen with any of Em's albums since they are all rather distinctive in that aspect. It probably seems silly to put some EP's above his albums, but if we're talking in preference of spins, I'd rather toss those on and slip in tracks from 11-13 on this list at any given time, then the reverse perhaps.
I honestly didn't have much of a problem with Revival when it dropped. The majority of those songs fit very well into his repertoire, but somehow at the end of the day it kinda sucked, so it was hard to place. I'm ok with it being at the bottom for those reasons, but I don't hate it either. Encore is impossible for me to not see as living in the shadow of The Eminem Show. There are actual trash tracks (and multiple ones) that rarely littered his records before, but at the same time I can still vibe with it.
MMLP2 I've actually always loved. The 1/3 pop/rock influence is kinda commercially prevalent, but it's balanced by the 1/3 oldschool and 1/3 in-the-game bag. Those bonus tracks are fucking lit too and sold me on the whole thing. Relapse also greatly improves when you throw in a few of the refill tracks and take out some of the lesser ones instead.
So shit, I didn't think I'd ramble on like that, but with that said, I loved all of Kamikaze and the new one at #4 feels high considering its recency, but it's incredibly well-rounded and actually doesn't have the flaws of say, MMLP2. MMLP2 has the longevity for me, I will always outlisten those songs than probably anything off of the newer record, but that's a personal thing; but I think the newer one just has an equal showcase of skill, maybe some filler but it isn't *shit* filler and is at least as cohesive and varied. Seems fair to place it there for that sake.
Ranking sucks because I have favorite tracks from all albums with most any artist, but basically I have to order it instead by concept, vibe, tone, and representation of the artist. It seems like the slider scale of Em's work kind of hits at least 2 out of those 4 at any time effectively, and the top stuff is how well he gets the 3 or 4 working together variously, depending on his headspace, I guess. | Drifter
02.22.20 | Why not include re-up when he's on that more than the 8 mile soundtrack? Lol | Assemblage
02.22.20 | Lol yeah, that's a good point. I guess I broke my own rule of keeping it to major/solo releases. But I felt like I couldn't leave out Lose Yourself and Rabbit Run, if you're considering how inseparable Em is to 8 Mile. | Assemblage
02.22.20 | Fuck I hate lists lol. Why do I want to bump up Encore now, I could see it at 8. Second-guessing shit. | Drifter
02.22.20 | Encore is 1
Recovery is like 5 or 6 | Assemblage
02.22.20 | How do you feel about MTBMB? | DaHound
06.16.20 | I was surprised by it tbh. I wish he wouldve switched his flow up a bit. Wouldve made it less exhausting but I actually enjoy it a good amount. | bigweinerdon
06.16.20 | encore is fuckin sick agreed. swap it with 4 and the list works |
