Musician Deaths

A list
1Elliott Smith
Either/Or

Suicide or murder, the guy was immensely talented, and his music helps a lot of people (including myself) and influences a lot of people as well. To this day his death is murky details to say the least, but if he was still alive and clean God knows how much more amazing music he could have released in his lifetime.
2Stone Temple Pilots
Core

Scott Weiland was an incredible singer but kicking the drugs for some people never really ends does it. Enabled by people around him and the idiocy of "being a rockstar", dug his own grave financially and physically, and ultimately it put him there.
3Linkin Park
Hybrid Theory

I remember reading the breaking news at the time Chester Bennington took his life thinking "How the hell did we not see this happening?" Looking back at the lyrics, the man was begging for someone to just help him and it's really tragic how it all ended.
4Soundgarden
Badmotorfinger

Chris Cornell was the last person I'd expect to also take their own life, but after the death of his close friend Chester Bennington, and an apparent secret battle with prescription pills, we're just left with the fucking amazing music this man released.
5Slayer
South of Heaven

Jeff Hanneman couldn't stop drinking, so he died. Plain and simple. After his death, members of Slayer, such as Dave Lombardo were quoted as saying that Hanneman "Was drinking a Coors tallboy always....always". Which even as someone who enjoys to drink fairly but moderately, I can't imagine how much goddamn alcohol that is in one lifetime, nor do I want to know or experience it. Slayer is one of my favorite bands, and while their last records with Hanneman weren't anything special, it'd be much better if he had been alive to make some new stuff and, more importantly, be alive.
6Motorhead
Ace of Spades

I was going to put this higher, but the fact that Lemmy legitimately enjoyed his life up til he died makes it less tragic than the others. The man was a legend for drugs, alcohol, and being the one you had to keep up with. The fact he even lived to his 70's shows that the human body is stronger than we think.
7Mother Love Bone
Apple

Almost famous. Had the ability to probably become huge in the 90's, but Andrew Wood's death at just 24 ended their career. The amount of talent heroin killed in the 90's is staggering.
8Alice in Chains
Jar of Flies

The best voice of the Seattle bands by far, the best band to come out of the flood of Seattle grunge. The MTV unplugged show was like a Renaissance painting. Layne Staley in the center, literally on half a life left due to heroin. Jerry Cantrell trying to control things, the drummer a full blown alcoholic. Mike Starr was just as bad on heroin as Layne Staley. But yet they were so talented it didn't even affect the performance or music (yet)
9Jason Molina
Let Me Go, Let Me Go, Let Me Go

Such a talented guitarist and different genres. Another guy who just never knew when to not drink. The saddest reality is that death by drugs and alcohol is pretty avoidable.
