Fantastic Film Scores

This list might be a stretch, seeing as how Sputnik seems to be virtually devoid of any Original Soundtracks, but here goes...
1 Thomas Newman
Road to Perdition

A moody, piano-driven film score with the occasional jazz hit thrown in the mix. I absolutely love how Newman can complement humble piano lines with the sweeping strings of a full orchestral sound. This music has nostalgia written all over it- a well-deserved Oscar winner. Notables: Road to Chicago, Road to Perdition, Meet Maguire, and Murder (in four parts)
2Wendy Carlos
A Clockwork Orange

The neuroticism of this score perfectly matches the eccentricity of Kubrick's film itself. An off-setting blend of electronic effects and classical music, Carlos' work is a fitting complement to the dark and bleak mood of the film, in which she adequately uses (not steals) integral parts of Beethoven's works. "Singin' in the Rain" will never again be the same for me. Notables: Title theme and March from A Clockwork Orange
3 Nick Cave & Warren Ellis
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

My, my, my, Nick Cave has certainly come a long way since The Bad Seeds. Heavy on rusty violin drones and a touch of piano, the music here is very brooding and contemplative. Rife with internal struggle, Cave and Ellis masterfully complement one of 2007's most underrated flicks. Notables: Song for Jesse, Rather Lovely Thing, Money Train, and Song for Bob
4 Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard
The Dark Knight

As much as critics loved to complain about the utter lack of variation in the "Batman Begins" score, I loved the way Howard and Zimmer encapsulated the mood of Batman's origin. "The Dark Knight" takes this and builds upon it, while at the same time introducing new and starkly different themes for both Harvey Dent as well as The Joker (with a 9 minute suite of ingenuity based entirely on only two notes). A fantastic score for a fantastic film. Notables: Joker Suite, Harvey-Two Face, and A Dark Knight
5 Howard Shore
The Return of the King

Say what you will, but Shore's songwriting is easily at its best in the Lord of the Rings scores, progressively improving with each subsequent film. Gondor's triumphant yet-wounded theme of "Minis Tirith" is amazing. The absolutely breathtaking 10 minute+ track "The Return of the King" captures the sheer grandeur of the film by incorporating a number of new and old themes together, my favorite being the variation on the classic Hobbit theme from "Fellowship". Annie Lennox absolutely shines here with "Into the West", and "The Grey Havens" serves as a constant reminder to listeners of the pure emotionality of the film's final scene. Simply amazing, to say the least. Notables: Minis Tirith, The Return of the King, Shelob's Lair, The Grey Havens, and Into the West.
