12.18.19 | Rey is such a dis-likable character. Apparently, a Jedi can heal wounds now with his powers, bring people back from the dead & disabling an entire spaceship. Palpatine's return is never explained, it's just used as a plot device to explain Rey's origin and the source of her (seemingly unlimited) powers.
Kylo Ren is worse than my GF on her worst period day. First he's all bad, trying to kill everything and everyone, then he's regretting his past actions, trying to undo what he did, then he goes bad again, then he's again the good guy. Never really understood at whose side he was.
I also understand why Mark Hamill wants no more to be part of this garbage. His 5-minute scene is worse than what Rian Johnson did to his character in two hours and apparently his character is having second thoughts about throwing light-sabers now. Don't worry, you'll understand when you'll see that scene. |

the strength of star wars isn't in any of the actual films, the characters or the people in it. it's the general world-building of a massive alternate universe with incredibly complex and detailed lore and systems within it. if you take any of the films on their own, they aren't masterpieces (as much as i love empire - i think mandalorian is going to be the closest thing star wars will get to great directing), but they are more than the sum of any part. that and being a massive cultural touchstone give the franchise a wide appeal no other sci-fi or fantasy could hope to achieve. |

doubt anyone would argue any of this. too bad the ambition of the prequels doesn't amount to shit other than some fantastic memeage and those fantastic plinkett reviews. on the flipside the new trilogy are nice to look at so you can kind of shut your brain off and start drooling on yourself OR you can take the laser sword movies super seriously and be upset.
i guess what im saying is both trilogys are ~bad~ on fundamentally every level and which you prefer kind of comes down to how much you care about star wars. |

Luke was a fairly typical young-hero-on-a-journey type, and while Leia was a little more spicy than the average heroine of the time, it was Ford's charisma, flair for humor and everyman persona that elevated the original trilogy to make it something more than the typical adventure flick. Of course, it was also Darth Vader, who was one of the most memorable of villains, thanks largely to James Earl Jones. |

Because it was Star Wars, it could have been written and filmed by a high school drama class and still made a ton of money, especially because the first film of the trilogy brought back the original characters (albeit in supporting form). The franchise has always been about the toys but the prequels attempted to be more. Lucas was trying to build an galaxy with economic and political machinations, regional dialects. and some unfortunate racial caricatures, while writing a central story that was fundamentally a tragedy. |

Rey could have been interesting, but they just made her a Mary Sue who never suffers any consequences. Same complaints everyone has had for years. I don't think anyone is saying that. TFA is totally a rehash of the original and left us with the impossibility of having Luke, Han and Leia together one last time, and then Rise of Skywalker is also a disaster. But there's noticeably people trying to defend TLJ as if it has nothing to do with ruining the franchise where it really killed it at once. Where TFA was kind of "fixable" and they could still take the story in an interesting direction, TLJ effectively ruined old and new characters and advanced nothing of the plot. It just ended it altogether.
Not to mention a Hollywood writer/producer is using this film in an University in Chicago as the perfect example of "bad screenwriting". initially disney had a different director set for each movie and i think they were kind of experimenting with the idea of letting each hand-picked director take the reigns and have more creative control than usual due to the trend of success with that with other big franchises. remember that period where studio intervention was plaguing every franchise movie and then marvel and slowly other studios started being like "hey what if we just like... try trusting these people..." and everyone started suddenly putting out more successful films?
This was Disneys attempt at that, and when TLJ happened they panicked, kicked treverrow or whoever the fuck off the third film, begged abrams to come back and course correct for the third while they breathed down his neck. which is a big part of why they lost faith in the dudes originally helming han solo too im pretty sure and when they saw the creative liberties they were taking and how much backlash tlj got they were like "holy fucking balls we need to get Ron Howard up in here and make him put together a sterile safe film with no creative liberty" (hence why he comments that he was surprised at the amount of creative liberty his daughter ended up receiving for her episode of Mandalorian when he received virtually none for solo)
so who knows if abrams really ever did have a concrete plan for the trilogy, if he was hired under the expectation that his part of the story was finished after TFA he probably had his own ideas of where he would LIKE it to go but it's not like he would in that case have official scripts for where it was SUPPOSED to go or anything. So maybe he would have made a better trilogy if rian didn't do his thing or maybe he wouldn't, hard to know for sure. |

I mean the Rose storyline was probably the worst romance in sci-fi history arguably, the whole gravity issue, the self sacrifice of Laura Dern creating a plot hole for all previous movies, force ghosts effecting reality which also creates plot holes for all previous films, Finn not continuing his development at all, Knights of Ren abandoned, Laura Dern not telling Poe the plan and wasting everyones time for like no fucking reason even in the face of mutiny, Leia floating through space like Marry Poppins, Luke being uh...some other character that wasn't Luke, and weirdest of all Rian Johnson left no cliffhanger/tension at the end of his second act (and these aren't even all of my complaints). Some of this might have been more excusable if it wasn't part 8 of a 9 part story.
So I mean, yeah ep 9 was normie bullshit and I probably won't revisit it again, but at least it wasn't completely buttfucking the lore/character development etc at the final hour like TLJ was. |

I have and the existence of wormholes is a hypothesis that is still unproven. The fact that they are consistent with the theory of general relativity doesn't mean that they DO exist. It means that they MIGHT exist. Just because Einstein came up with a hypothesis doesn't make it true.

b) some of the best scenes in the whole franchise (eg the throne room fight and Rey's parent reveal) which explicitly refute the most dumbshit, boring-ass Star Wars tropes (eg everyfuckingbody in the whole of the galaxy is a Skywalker, every villain is a puppet of another villain, the moral of the story is meant to be about how everyday people are heroes who can save the day but all the everyday people in Star Wars turn out to be fucking Palpatine's granddaughter or some other bullshit)
c) the cinematography is above average blockbuster level and in fact occasionally truly stunning, again a nice change from literally every other Star Wars movie
d) yes it's stupid as hell and frequently nonsensical but like - no more than every single movie in this franchise has been, and again, at the very least TLJ is being stupid and nonsensical without slavishly aping every plot point and moment from the OT

A dagger, but c3p0 can... but wait... can't translate it. Unless we wipe his memory, oh so sad, but he gets it back don't worry. What happened to the Finn + Rose romance. So he loves Rey now? No wait he loves this random Amazonian/Wonder Woman wannabe he finds on the planet with the crashed death star. The force can heal now? And transfer objects (yeah yeah, they're "diads")? On this sith planet, they're "conjuring" a fleet which is apparently 10000!!!! times bigger than the current first order fleet. With absolutely nobody taking notice. I mean it's fine when Palpatine is leader of galactic senate so he can finance these things, but now they just gotta make stuff up. Oh and when all the civilian ships go all dunkirk on the Sith planet, what happened to all the scary electromagnetic fields and gravity wells... who knows. I could genuinely go on for as long as the movie about the awful plot but there is more.
Costuming was mediocre and uninspired, score was dead boring, dialogue was awful. Where is the vision? Where is the worldbuilding? Some fucking weird looking aliens out at a burning man festival for 30 seconds isn't worldbuilding. This is apparently now a giant galaxy populated by humans and mostly irrelevant non-humans. The "romances" are DOA because the characters are flat. They are seemingly unable to just let go of the old 6 movies. They constantly have unnecessary cameos and callbacks and IMO this hurts more than helps. Carrie Fisher was never that good of an actress and she's basically stiff as a board in this movie, not that I blame her with the limp noodle of a script... RIP. |

The biggest problem with the trilogy is that Disney didn't have a proper vision so we get TFA starting a new story then TLJ messing most of that up and finally TROS trying to tie everything up while righting the wrongs of TLJ.
It's ended up being a messy trilogy but a trilogy that I think is mostly entertaining. Star wars fans are fickle and you will never please all of them. I mean the prequel trilogy is seen in a much more positive light these days because the kids like me that grew up with it appreciate the nostalgia.
I honestly think people are too hard on the new Disney trilogy and in 20-30 years it will be looked at with fresh eyes and seen for what it is, a great set of star wars films. |

While I understand why a lot of people feel this way, I truly do think that most fans wouldn't really be that insufferable if they just managed to make one fucking coherent, awesome trilogy that isn't either bafflingly cheesy (the prequels) or exhausting in its incoherence (Disney trilogy). Most people were pretty ecstatic when The Force Awakens came out, outside of some saying it was a rip off of ep 4. To finally see a Star Wars movie with, ya know, actual scenes, acting, practical effects, etc. We were all pretty ready to love this new Disney trilogy for the most part, but holy fuck it is astonishing how badly they dropped the ball imo.
I dunno, imo it really shouldn't be THAT hard to just make three awesome Star Wars movies. It's already such a rich and interesting universe that most people love, there are just so many fascinating directions they could tell a story in this universe. They have all of the money in the world, they can get whatever writers they want for the project and the best special effects ever, etc.
The EU has managed to tell a plethora of fantastic stories, there's really no reason at all why the movies can't manage to do the same. The fans are really just asking for basic storytelling that you demand of literally any other franchise - if they got that, I doubt that Star Wars fans would have a reputation for being as annoying as they are. |

It was obvious from the get-go, that choosing different screenwriters for each film won't do the job. Everybody has a different opinion on what makes a good Star Wars movie, so everyone made their own film without thinking of bringing together a cohesive trilogy of films. |

To pretend that the prequels somehow killed Star Wars is hilarious. Nobody is arguing they were great movies (Episode 3 is still a decent movie however), but the prequels enriched the Star Wars universe and lore in ways these soulless horseshit sequels never could. No matter how mediocre and borderline garbage the execution of the prequels was sometimes, the designs, lore and the overall story was far more captivating, rich and most importantly original than the sequels.
Despite the reception the prequels received they spawned a shit ton of books, video games, tv shows and expanded the universe greatly because irregardless of Lucas' shitty direction, the prequels were still made with love and attention to detail that separates those movies to the corporate money-grabbing garbage that Disney has put out. It's a fact that people to this day engage with the material, lore and ideas spawned from the prequels and you can bet your ass that no one will give a shit about anything sequel trilogy related in 5 years. |

The prequels often dragged, sterile dialogue, some woeful characters but the few standout characters/scenes were better than those in the sequels. The pacing was better in the sequels but I just never cared much for the characters. They never came close to recapturing the wonder, cast chemistry and wit of the originals. Apart from Rey and Ren, I don’t think Finn was doing much less than anyone else. Adam Driver’s character in Girls was infinitely more unnerving than Kylo Ren. I spent the movie trying to figure out which girl Rey was going to kiss, misread the banning of the scene in Singapore. |
