12.01.19 | Dead Kennedys- California Über Alles off Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables.
Genre: Melodic Punk/Hardcore
A friend's older brother made us a mix tape, and this was the song that slapped the thrash metal out of me, and converted me into a melodic punk obsessed, blue mohawk, doc Martin boot stomping freak. |

12.01.19 | Ooooh nice theme budgie!!!
I'll go with: Underworld - Cowgirl (album: dubnobasswithmyheadman)
Genre: Techno
That build up in what could be their best song hooked me instantly. Introducing new elements left, right and centre at breakneck speed, fading them in and out and reintroducing them again when least expected this track is a clear sign of their genius. Still find new details here after so many years of intensive listening. Gets me hyped every time. Everything everything.

The Beatles - Within You Without You
This was my introduction to sitar music. (It's also one of the reasons why I liked George Harrison better than those other two guys). It was also one of the first psychedelic songs I'd ever heard.

12.01.19 | I’ll go neurofunk: Ed Rush & Optical - Temper (from Travel the Galaxy)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOu7E2ewY1k
Always liked drum n bass but was more into the jazzy styles, was always intrigued by ‘dark drum n bass’. This album really got me into it, and this track I remember firing up with the sirens, pure sci fi adrenaline rush
Over the last decade I’d be surprised if I’ve spent listening to any other album than this and I’ve probably run near enough the length of the circumference of the planet to it in that time (best running album, esp night running). Solid doofcore.
Also amazing for doing the vacuuming to. |

12.01.19 | Nice one, I hope we'll have more recs! Since I told my story with black metal and dungeon synth in one of my lists, I'll be a bit more specific.
My case with DSBM (depressive suicidal black metal): Angst og Selvforakt by Selvhat. (https://youtu.be/99yPA7K5MCA?t=497)
I was somewhat afraid of this subgenre earlier because of the name and subject, but in the end my curiosity won. I saw this album on the Black Metal Promotion II YouTube channel, and gave it a listen. And it was an overwhelming experience, how different and "captivating" it was! A different album from my picture about BM in general - it was slow, melancholic, dark, emotional and oddly "relaxing" - I can't really describe the feeling.
I especially liked this song: short, no vocals, just a distorted beauty. |
Divaman
12.01.19 | Dimmu Borgir - 3.1 - Not really my cup of tea - vocals sound a little like Gollum and a buddy - but I kind of like the guitar, and the whole thing sounds kind of medieval, which is a plus. |

12.01.19 | "Love's in Need of Love Today" by Stevie Wonder from Songs in the Key of Life
Genre: Soul
My Mom had the Songs in the Key of Life CD and I knew it was critically acclaimed (and I knew the hits "I Wish" "Sir Duke" and "Isn't She Lovely" already of course,) so I decided to toss it on when I was like 16? and the opener was an immediate cue for me to love soul. Since then, artists like Stevie, Minnie Riperton, D'Angelo, Sly and the Family Stone... etc are close to my heart.

12.01.19 | Okay, I had to go back to my very first list on this site from when I was 16 in order to think of an early punk band to replace Dead Kennedys. And because a good amount of them are kinda cringy, I think it's between Suicide Machines and A Wilhelm Scream.
I'm gonna go Wilhelm Scream as a band that brought me to modern punk rock, and I believe they were the first band I saw at the Triple Rock in Minneapolis, the old punk bar here. They're probably the first modern punk band that I ever listened to and completely fell in love with. The more complicated song structure (for punk) spoke to my metal loving ass, and it was important in making that much needed transition away from the metal crowd.

SaZ wasn't exactly my first post-metal jam (that would be So Did We), but it was my way of plunging in - I'm v glad today to have done this, as it's probably my favourite of the Metals, and this track was the one that stuck hardest. It's not rocket science, but the way they use harmonics on this album is chilling af

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_a46WJ1viA
A few years ago I was searching through my parents garage and found this LP lying there. Back then I used to only listen to punk and metal, but this album changed that. From hearing the title track, I went through all my parents old LP's and found more and more classics(Talking Heads, The Cure, Fleetwood Mac) which made me realize there are so many old albums I had not heard off. That also made me go search up more music, which led me to this site. This still gives me chills after all those years, a stone cold classic in pop. |

12.02.19 | Dead Kennedys - 2.9 - Good riff, juvenile lyrics. These guys were never my favorite punk band. |
Divaman
12.03.19 | Underworld - 3.4 - Let's do this stream of consciousness. OK, starts with synth. That's hopeful. Now the vocalist (more a speaker than a singer) starts echoing himself. Kind of cool so far, but we've got 6 minutes to go. Ooo, more weird synth. That's kind of nice. Now some less interesting keyboard. Halfway through, but getting a little repetitive. OK, the vocalist has returned, just in time. My mind just drifted there at about the 5 minute mark. Think this song might have all it's best tricks behind it. No, wait -- some choppy shit. OK, that perked me up again. A minute and a half left, and now they're all in (except for the vocals, which went away again.) OK, gets more sparse. Lots of little changes to keep your interest. Smart. Fading now. Not bad, I think they carried it off pretty well. |

I've heard this whole album and honestly, it's not my favorite thing in punk. "Holiday in Cambodia" is amazing though. The guitar is okay, the bass is fun, I feel like the big hook is his vocals which are shaky and unique, but not really my thing. Good enough.

12.06.19 | Ed Rush and Optical - 3.1 - There's a lot to like about this. When it started, though, I thought it the synths were prepping us for some vocals, so I'm a little disappointed it's an instrumental. Also, it's a little overlong and repetitious. |

12.06.19 | Working on my lab report, gonna try to keep up on this while I work
1. Stormblast - Dimmu Borgir - I have not listened to this band since probably high school, I used to really dig Gateways; them along with Behemoth was my attempt to get into black metal at a younger age. I could never really get into them because the music is so gaudy, I'm pretty sure this mother fucker just purred at me. 3.2
2. California Uber Alles - Dead Kennedys - Obviously this song absolutely rules. It isn't my favorite on Fresh Fruit really, but that album is full of killer songs and I sing along to it every single time. 4.5
3. Cowgirl - Underworld - I have only just heard of this group? about a week ago when I heard Dark & Long. I'm not very into techno music, but I loved that song, and this song is really great too, the 8 minutes fly by. 3.9
4. Waiting Room - Fugazi - My favorite song to play on bass. I only grew to love this song over time since I first heard it in high school (thanks to some weird website that listed top 100 punk songs, digitaldreamdoor?). I didn't really like it, I thought it was kinda weird. Now It's one of my favorite Fugazi songs, and I listen to it on a fairly regular basis. 4.7
5. Within You and Without You - The Beatles - Not really my favorite song from this album, and not really my favorite beatles album by any stretch. It's definitely a nice listen every once in a while, but nothing about it has ever really taken hold with me. 3.3 |

12.06.19 | associating all of electronic with ravers is like associating retards whose favourite bands are korn and slipknot with metal its just plain flat out stupid |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.19 | also its sounds like you live in a shitty rapey degenerate swamp |
Minushuman24
12.06.19 | metal shows are kinda boring.
I think he's more or less associating "rave" music with the most popular form of electronic music nowadays, like electric forest. Which is notorious for creepers. |
Trifolium
12.06.19 | Ah I know that you're not too big a fan of electronic music budgie, no prob.
It's different in NL I think. Gabber originated here, we've got a lot of Trance and Deep House and stuff like that, and Drum n Bass is huge here too. Many different subgenres of electronic music are very mainstream here. |
budgie
12.06.19 | "metal shows arent the same as punk and core shows,"
they are the exact same. same populace. |
budgie
12.06.19 | "
I think he's more or less associating "rave" music with the most popular form of electronic music nowadays, like electric forest"
obviously i didn't spend time in every festival ever in socal but from my perspective every single fella that was into electronic was a disgusting pighead. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.19 | no shit, hence the nu metal analogy. nobody who is actually versed in electronic goes to fucking 'edm' raves or listens to any of that absolute garbage just like nobody actually versed in metal goes to fucking warped tour and nobody versed in virtually anything decent goes to coachella. those aren't indicators of what the genres have to offer those are all various lowest common denominator gatherings for various types of scenester ass inbreds. you think anyone at a rapey rave is there for the music and not just to get fucked up? thats a negligible niche that nobody with a brain associates with. plus it is circumstantial too - one of the rapiest places on the planet ive been to was a country peanut bar. |

Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.19 | ive played in bands in various genres, mostly metal bands in fact, in multiple cities starting from when i was about 16 years old, i've been to an absolutely embarrassingly vast quantity of metal and punk shows, probably a factor in why i don't like the genres much any more, and in absolutely no world are metal, punk, and hardcore populaces the same. |
budgie
12.06.19 | "you are so pathetically sheltered its adorable"

JohnnyoftheWell
12.06.19 | why |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.19 | nobody tells me to manage my Budgie Beef bud, without our high drama the site would be way too chill |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.19 | "why"
metal crowd - with exceptions of course - is usually the most chill, welcoming, and considerate of the bunch. people help other people up in a mosh, they don't take getting pushed around personally, make sure people aren't getting seriously hurt, want to socialise and just blaze up, whatever.
punk crowd people are cliquey and judgemental and vastly less considerate, usually a much larger proportion of absolute degenerate scumbags and assholes
hardcore crowd is either a bunch of insecure pussies who want to flail but not be touched or just stand there and not be touched or they'll throw a temper tantrum or there is the odd psychopath who is there explicitly to get his rocks off hurting other people. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.19 | in other words metal crowds are chillest, punk most rowdy and negligent, hardcore most juvenile |
ArsMoriendi
12.06.19 | I hate mosh pits. The entire concept of them is just... no.
I’ve only ever been in 1 it was because I was dragged into it (local punk show...)
Like just dance like normally, right? Not like some spazz bull in a china shop. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.19 | i used to love it when i was an angsty teen but then i grew up into an adult and learned how to dance |
Minushuman24
12.06.19 | As long as there isn't a douchebag person in the pit, it's really really fun to mosh and feel the energy of the music. Not a thing for everyone, but when I really enjoy the music, I'd like to move around to in some form.
I don't think you grew out of that angst there |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.19 | thats part of why the metal shows are the better side of things, the mosh is generally more polite unless you are at some really mainstream B.S. but still moshing is obnoxious as fuck especially if ur just tryna dance around and mind your own biz, but there is a social contract that you sign when you go to these shows to not be a poor sport about it IMO. Can't get salty about it as long as everyone is behaving themselves. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.19 | so you either gotta just go with it or fuck off to the lame part of the crowd where everyone is just standing there stone-faced with their arms crossed |
Minushuman24
12.06.19 | I'd agree with that, metal shows are def more chill, but I feel like most people just stand and stare at metal shows which is kinda boring. Pit etiquette is a definite thing, and some people sorely miss it and it's irritating; namely fucking pop punk kids. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.19 | one of the most egregious pit etiquette faux pas i've ever seen was during a Converge set, there was a dude there that spent the duration literally waiting on the sides until someone was super vulnerable and then basically fucking tackling them from behind at waist level as hard as he could, flipping them over and then dipping out.
unrelated to this guy but that set was the most fucked up ive ever gotten in a mosh, i fell down on my ass and had someone fall on top of my neck and my back was thrown out for like a month |
Minushuman24
12.06.19 | That dude should get his ass beat, what the actual fuck.
And fuck that would suck dick. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.19 | at the larger more mainstream metal shows you also get that one bitch that is constantly throwing elbows and scratching and shit and getting super defensive like why the fuck are you in here bitch |
Minushuman24
12.06.19 | I've experienced that person too many times to count.
The most annoying people are the ones that jump onto your shoulders to climb over you and crowd surf, like dude just fucking ask
Oh and hardcore dancers |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.19 | lol yeah. and nothing like a surprise kick to the dome from someone crowd surfing when ur not paying attention, that'll wake ya up |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.19 | and yes hardcore dancers take the cake for biggest fucking losers of the bunch
me and my friends once made the mistake of trying to mosh in a crowd full of hardcore dancers once when we were youngins, the butthurtery that ensued was quite a spectacle. |

Waiting Room: Ok so I have never ever heard a Fugazi track. How is that even possible while spending so much time on Sput? Don't know. This was very cool. 4.0
Within You Without You: One of my faves from the album. Lovely vibes, great vox, drumming is super cool. 5.0
Temper: Delish. I'm a big Black Sun Empire fan so this is right up my alley. 4.2

12.07.19 | Red Lorry Yellow Lorry - Talk About the Weather (eponymous album)
...and that's how I became the post-punk maester.
I used to work in a record shop in my teens and this record I fell in love with so much that the owner had to order it at least six times, cause I overused the first copy we had playing it in the store and gave the others away to friends. I then went behind his back and ordered the thing on shop's account a few more times, which is how I got fired (well, that and the fact that I was also stealing his money).

12.08.19 | FUGAZI - so, i LOVE minor threat, love love LOVE, probably could call them the best band ever, miss my early 20s and listening to minor threat every single damn day! i never really checked out Fugazi for some reason, though. this track is great, groovy, i love it. 4.4 because the live mix isn't really the best way to get introduced to a track imo.
THE BEATLES - oh boy, this is one band that i never "understood." thanks for this rec, diva, but i don't know that i really care for it! it's cool, i guess, i'm not repulsed by it. 3.0
ED RUSH - sorry doof, i have a deep, carnal hatred for this type of music. almost don't want to rate it! 1.0
STEVIE WONDER - hmmmmmmmmmm. obviously it's not bad but i mean... i had to turn it off before the track finished because i just can't do this. don't have soul in my soul, i guess. 3.0 anyway |

Is this... melodic hardcore? I hate it. It's all of the energy of pop punk, but with hardcore elements. I guess that flashy bass is fine?
1.8/5
"Sterile Vision"
This opening is very metal, but also chill. The vocals aren't bothering me as they do in most "extreme" metal. This has an epic feel that works for me. It's not my favorite thing, but I can actually appreciate it.
3.5/5 |
Divaman
12.10.19 | A Wilhelm Scream - 2.3 - Not as bad as you'd think from the start, and it is blessedly short. Kind of abrasive, though.

12.10.19 | "Within You Without You" - I was never really into the psychedelic side of the Beatles (or The Beatles in general), so this particluar song didn't really fired up my imagination either. 2.6
"Temper" - It is not funky at all...what is neurofunk then, it just sounds like many other techno artist on Soundcloud. 2.5
"Love's In Need Of Love Today" - The cover looks way too similar to the Looney Tunes "That's all folks!" scene, haha! I expected something like this from an Ars rec. It was just a very little bit too long, but still: pretty good. 3.5 (Surprise, eh?)
"Jaws 3, People 0" - It went to "nope" right after two seconds in. 2.2
"Sterile Vision" - I never really cared about Neurosis. Right after this song, I'm still not sure if it is worth the time to check 'em out. "Maybe later. Sometime." 3.0 |

12.10.19 | a willhelm scream, jaws 3, people 0 -
this is different from the punk i am more familiar with but it does remind me of some of the styles that are on the THPS games i played as a kid. i think i'll always prefer the more raw late 70s early 80s styles, i still did really enjoy this. really clean production is something that usually inhibits how much i can get into aggressive music (looking at you death metal) but i had a lot of fun here. hm... 3.7 |

12.11.19 | "Black Milk"
Don't get me wrong, I really like this one, but it's FAR from my favorite on Mezzanine. Her voice is simultaneously haunting and sweet. The piano is pleasant and atmospheric, and the drums are as consistent as any track on the album. My only negative is that among some of the most impressive tracks of all time, it doesn't stick out in the crowd. Did a quick rank and I think it's my 7th fave on the album. I think "Angel" might be my favorite on the album. The worst song on Mezz (the instrumental Exchange) is like a 4/5 though so, album rules.

I mean, who doesn't know this song? It's one of Simon and Garfunkel's biggest. Simon's voice is very pleasant and the piano is honestly maybe a bit boring, but the song is humble, so that's not exactly a bad thing here. Not really my thing, but it's still really nice. The pickup with the strings and drums is certainly the best part.
3.4/5
"O Superman (For Massenet)"
Huh huh huh huh huh huh huh huh. Her robotic voice is so inviting and shows a bit of whimsy. I like how lighthearted her voice is and I like the building synths in the background. You guys know me, I love cartoonish music and the theatrics of Laurie Anderson use that concept to well. It's slow to the punch, but as it changes and as it builds it begins to feel more and more magical. It's very escapist. What I find so strange is that the lyrics are actually about the USA's growing military presence worldwide. The ending music's ominous feeling with that context make me think of a plane bombing. This woman is brilliant.

12.14.19 | Just had two espresso shots and some dexedrine, lets fuckin goooo
Temper - Ed Rush - I like this, this is good, this is fun. 3.3
angst og selvforakt- selvhat - I was a little disappointed about the lack of vocals, especially when the next track kicked in, and I was digging it. Still I dug the mood of the song, even if it was a bit lacking. 3
Love's in the Need of Love Today - Stevie Wonder - This is lovely 3.8
Sterile Vision - Neurosis - And this rules, those horns make this song 3.9
Black Milk - Massive Attack - God Massive Attack is incredible 4.0
Bridge over troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel - 3.6 hell yea
O Superman - Laurie anderson - As lame as it is, I knew about this song through that Black Mirror movie. I was going through some troubles at the moment so I remember it impacting me quite a bit then, I am not really sure why. It's strange but captivating, especially 6 minutes in... It is such a warm feeling 3.7
Talk about the weather - Red Lorry Yellow Lorry - up my alley 3.9
Not going in depth obviously on these because I am simultaneously studying for my physics final

12.14.19 | Are we about ready to do some second picks this month? Because if we are, here's mine.
Nightwish - The Greatest Show on Earth (from Endless Forms Most Beautiful)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YFf5CZSCYM&list=PLWprWK6AVnu7eSM9NzDkJclQ1KKqjrTdb&index=15&t=0s
This is the song that made me first realize I loved symphonic metal. I've rec'd the live version from a Wembley Stadium show that I think catches the electricity of the piece. (And believe it or not actually cuts a few minutes off of the run time vs. the studio version.) For me, this is the most exciting piece of music of the last decade.
If you like, for bonus points, here's a cover version by a young woman named Fernanda Alba who brings together young musicians from all over the globe to cover the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U92uYshKs38 |

2. Dead Kennedys - California Uber Alles
Punk is just one of the worst genres in general so don't take this too personally, it wasn't exceptionally bad for the genre or anything
2/5
3. Underworld - Cowgirl
This song encroaches dangerously close to Hamster Dance levels of goofy novelty music. Reminds me of something I would have heard at a laser-tag birthday pizza party when i was a kid tbqh. But maybe it's perfectly entry-level in that regard, so this makes sense for the months theme. I think I've 5'd almost all of Trif's songs tho so I hope he forgives me.

2.5/5

I like that bass A LOT, actually. The vocals clash with the music, but in a good way. Legit, good bass will usually make me at least interested in a song.
4.2/5
"The Greatest Show on Earth"
I didn't wanna have to say this, but I think we need a time limit rule. 21 minutes? Are you serious? So far this is pleasant enough, with some epic moments and Gregorian moaning. It's a slow buildup, but after some narration, the edgy vocals feel okay. 9 and a half minutes in and I'm officially bored. Okay, there's some weird tribal barking sounds, that's kinda interesting and there a big riff epic now, okay. Whoa, a dude is singing now, that's different, but wait the girl is like immediately, hmmm. Okay, now it just feels like an entirely different song 17 minutes in. The first one sounded like it ended distinctively at least. No transition or anything. Is this just like a 5-minute epilogue section?
2.4/5
"No Pins Allowed"
This is nice so far, but I'm not sure it really grabs me. Wait it picked up and that's pretty nice what they're doing there. Yeah, decent stuff, though not too memorable.
3.3/5

Not gonna pretend I sat through this the whole way as it was pure fucking torture (21 minutes dude? dick move). I skipped through and did my very best though. The part where they play visuals from a dogs perspective in the woods and make wolf noises is some of the most retarded shit I've ever seen in my entire life, I did get a good rofl out of that so it wasn't a complete waste of time but....

So this is the best song on Tomorrow, In a Year. Potsy is already picking songs I love, no fair haha. The drums are awesome, the opera elements are awesome, the buildup is justified became it leads to a really satisfying end. When Karen's voice finally comes in it just feels like she's embarking on some journey. This album certainly has a progressive rock ethos to it, despite not being rock at all. Long-form songs with classical elements that buildup about nerdy science journeys. Here they celebrate Charles Darwin's writings about pigeons and the discoveries that lead to the theory of evolution. What's not to love?
