tectactoe 11.20.19	Scorsese has made some masterpieces but he's also made a handful of stinkers (imo): BOXCAR BERTHA, THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, KUNDUN, GANGS OF NEW YORK, HUGO. (I'm also not too big on SHUTTER ISLAND, THE AVIATOR, and SILENCE, but I like them a little more than the aforementioned.) Though obviously this is subjective to a large degree. And a lot of it also depends on how willing you are to forgive/overlook transgressions in the shadow of other achievements. As far as sheer consistency (that is, consistently good-to-great films across the entire filmography, barring one misstep because everyone gets one chance to find their footing), I'd say the following are more "consistent" filmmakers than Marty (perhaps not "better," though, depending on how you define it): Andrei Tarkovsky, Apichatpoing Weerasethakul, Bela Tarr, Buster Keaton, Eric Rohmer, Ernst Lubitsch, FW Murnau, Guy Maddin, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Kelly Reichardt, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Luis Buñuel, Noah Baumbach, Paul Thomas Anderson, Robert Bresson, Sergio Leone, Stanley Kubrick, Tsai Ming-liang, The Coen Brothers (close, they have two bad films imo). Again, that's not to say any of these directors are "better" than Scorsese (though I do prefer a handful of them). Hell, Hitchcock is one of the greatest directors of all time and he's had quite a few absolute pieces of shit. So prolificness might count for something, too, and allow for more stinkers.

I haven't seen many Kurosawa films so i can't compare much and Leone was great but not very versatile. Still, I think Scorsese was more consistent in terms of quality than all three of them (although admittedly i still need to watch more of Kurosawa's work).

tectactoe 11.21.19	THE SHINING is actually low-tier Kubrick tbh. EYES WIDE SHUT is his best film (why are the biggest masterpieces always the most misunderstood?) but 2001 is obviously his greatest achievement and easily one of the most influential films of the Non-Silent era (i.e. post-1928). PATHS OF GLORY, FULL METAL JACKET, and DR. STRANGELOVE round out my Kube Top Five. Only films I actively dislike are FEAR AND DESIRE (which, to be fair, is basically a student film) and A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, though I recognize its merit, I just can't stand it. (Not a fan of Burgess's source novel, either - a lot of my dislike stems from the story itself, not necessarily Stanley's adaptation of it, which is what I find most problematic about THE SHINING, actually.)

tectactoe 11.22.19	GANGS OF NEW YORK isn't pretentious, it just isn't a very good film. Nothing but an opulent costume party for Marty and another reason for Day-Lewis to ham it up. Lacks the depth of character you find in Scorsese's best stuff -- it's a surface level film. Which can be fine, sometimes, but doesn't warrant a nearly-three-hour run time. I'm also not big on SHUTTER ISLAND, though I rarely fall in love with films that are manufactured around and entirely in service of some grand revelation, which SHUTTER ISLAND most definitely is. Actually Scorsese had a rough patch in the aughts. The only film in that stretch of time that I liked was THE DEPARTED, but that film has _significantly_ depreciated with each revisit, and I'd probably put that in the bottom-half of his filmography now, too.

Pretentious 'cos Scorsese wanted to transform Cameron Diaz to somewhat essential but it fell shortly. And most of all, it is pretentious because he was developing that project about 25 years pretending to be a masterpiece while it's not.

tectactoe 12.02.19	I mean, Pacino "being Pacino" is entertaining as hell, but it's still just Pacino being Pacino. Pesci has never played a character with this much meditative quietude and restraint, it was a completely subversive role for him, and he handled it admirably. He covered a wider range of emotion than anyone else in the film simply from subtle facial expressions and nuanced body language. It was easily the best performance of the film imo, and the one with the highest degree of difficulty, too. Bombast acting is fun and exciting and all that, but it's also not very hard to pull off, especially since that's all Pacino has really done for the last few decades. De Niro was merely "fine" up until the final forty minutes or so. Once that inevitable car ride takes place, he gives an exquisite performance, too. (His bumbling phone call to Hoffa's wife is A1 acting.) But start to finish, Pesci was top dog.

Martin wanted this title but the executives forced him to simply call the film "The Irishman".
Intothepit 12.02.19	I'm sorry, but this movie is a major practice in overindulgence by a director. I mean, it's fine and all and certainly enjoyable, but this is Marty boy falling in love too much with his style and hammering it into our mind. And God, I used to love Pacino but the whole "go big or go home" schtick has worn thin. It's gotten really old. The movie is fine, even enjoyable (and at times a serious chore), but definitely nowhere near the greatness that is Goodfellas, Raging Bull, or Taxi Driver.

tectactoe 12.04.19	MEAN STREETS is good. Kinda shaggy and piecemeal, you can tell it's a formative feature, but you can also tell it's a Scorsese movie. Couple dynamo sequences (like the pool hall) and a fun time overall, just lacking the depth and cohesion of most of his films thereafter.

rockandmetaljunkie 12.06.19	Mean street's biggest problem is that it moves at a snail's pace. Most of the times that works fine for me but in this movie, the plot isn't going anywhere for almost two hours. Some fvck up (solid de niro performance) who owes people money and gets constantly into trouble and another chap (love Keitel's "big brother" performance, his showmanship shares a lot with de niro's next roles) who tries to protect him and get him straight. The loan sharks do not actually show up until the very end of the movie which makes it a bit anticlimactic. The movie has some nice cinematography and I really like the bleak, urban atmosphere of the 70's new york. Other than that and some really good performances, not much else is going on.

Michael is a presence literally throughout the whole time and he gradually gets more and more menacing towards Keitel's character, which is what provides a lot of narrative thrust - way more interesting than just some generic loan shark character with no arc. you can see things slowly getting more and more out of control through the whole movie, that's what's going on

SILENCE was a passion project, which I totally respect, but felt completely unmoved and ambivalent toward, aside from some breathtaking photography. HUGO and SHUTTER ISLAND, on the other hand, are both ass for two entirely different reasons.

BOXCAR BERTHA (groan) and KUNDUN (double groan). Maybe I will make that my goal: watch those before 2020 and that'll be my first Director list for the new year. So close yet so far away. And I will not tolerate any RAGING BULL shaming. It is essentially tied for my favorite film of all time.

It's an emotional and personal journey to the ultimate redemption. Underrated film in my opinion, but I will absolutely understand it if someone won't like it.
CaliggyJack 12.11.19	Hugo is without a doubt Martin Scorsese's Magnum Opus. It is Martin basically paying tribute to the very concept of cinema and it's direction, acting, and story are all amazing. I can understand the appeal of his gangster films but for me, his best films are when he explores Catholicism and its place in historical and modern society. Who's That Knocking At My Door and Mean Streets do a tremendous job of exploring the idea of Catholic guilt in the changing times of modern society, which has become far removed from the days of old in terms of religious moral interpretation. The Last Temptation of Christ is one of the best films about Jesus ever made, second only to The Passion. The way Scorsese explores temptation, and the humanity of Jesus himself was groundbreaking at the time. The Silence is his best religious film, Liam Neeson's performance is without a doubt one of his finest, and the concept of redemption and ministry in a land of those who do not share that belief is brilliant in my opinion. I like his gangster films but they just feel the same when they are compared with each other.

Credit should go to Kazantzakis for writing this masterpiece of a novel.
