11.13.19 | hi, how are you? |
BigBlob
11.13.19 | I had my ratings purge when the mods decided to wipe all my ratings for no reason whatsoever. fun times |
sixdegrees
11.13.19 | used to do this fairly regularly, no longer care |

11.13.19 | rating after hearing itunes samples is how you're supposed to do it |

11.13.19 | what about the dumb shits who ask for their ratings to be wiped and then start rating the same albums again |
sixdegrees
11.13.19 | what about them |
Calc
11.13.19 | people really take their ratings super seriously here, first the guy who was getting night terrors about them and can't rate things other than a 2 or a 4 because of it now this. just do what makes you happy bruv. |
sixdegrees
11.13.19 | there are people here who would be well served by a ratings purge |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.13.19 | Lol when you've been here as long as I have ratings often serve more purpose as a reminder that you've even listened to something at all |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.13.19 | Rather than as an actual indicator of how much you liked or disliked it |

11.13.19 | So that being said most of my oldest ratings are virtually meaningless, who fucking knows, but they help me decide whether or not to relisten to shit I forgot I ever heard |
SlothcoreSam
11.13.19 | Don't do a ratings purge, but a ratings realignment.
The initial rating is a good guide whether it is worth relistening to an album. Anything less than 3, I won't bother with. For my higher ratings, the rating often changes over time. |

11.13.19 | "most of my oldest ratings are virtually meaningless, who fucking knows, but they help me decide whether or not to relisten to shit I forgot I ever heard"
this. for the most part I KNOW that my ratings (yes all 9000+) are legit and if I overrate it by .5 I don't really care, all I know is that I heard it. I've made my playlists, bought my favourites, and forgot what didn't retain. |

11.14.19 | Ratings are arbitrary at most. There's not much meaning in it. I'm pretty much inclined toward what Pots said. It's just a reminder that I listened to something at all. |
Dewinged
11.14.19 | Do like Sandwich, rate once and never look back. Never hear an album twice. Or 5 everything because as Pots said once, life is short. |
Sniff
11.14.19 | My ratings are all i have. Don't touch them |

11.14.19 | "ratings often serve more purpose as a reminder that you've even listened to something at all"
definitely this. back in college i would listen to ten albums a day and give everything a 3.5-4.5 and promptly forget I'd heard it. these days its quite exciting going back and rechecking those albums i didnt remember |
AsleepInTheBack
11.14.19 | Idk, I get a strange satisfaction from having my ratings organised and representative, but past a certain number of ratings and after eniugh time has passed since rating I think it'll become unmanageable and pointless. We shall see.
In any event, there's obviously there's no right way to approach assigning arbitrary numbers to ones individual experiences with pieces of art on a niche music site. In other words, 5 everything. |
DoofDoof
11.14.19 | Halve my ratings you say? |
bloc
11.14.19 | ""1 listen, rate and dump" sort of things which I used to do when trying to amass a credible amount of ratings to seem cultured and well-read"
I'm still doing this |

Ok good so it's not just me lol |

11.14.19 | Believe it or not, I used to be very stringent about allowing high ratings (probably around 2012 I had 7-10 classics; somewhere along the way I got really lax and decided that every year has a handful of 5's. I got a ratings wipe in 2013 in an attempt to start over, but I fell into the same habits. If I started anew with a fresh account I'd probably do things differently. I'd say ratings wipes work the best when you don't have a lot of reviews/soundoffs. My biggest complaint with my 2013 wipe was that I re-rated everything to be more objective, but none of those scores matched up to any of the written content that I submitted to the site. |
butt.
11.14.19 | There are a lot of albums I've spun once and rated, especially if it's a long album or something I likely won't come back to. There's so much music out there to explore, my list is evergrowing. |
Demon of the Fall
11.14.19 | I very seldom do the one and done thing, I like to give it at least a second spin unless it was godawful/borderline unlistenable. I have 1s that I've listened to twice, 1.5s at least 3 times etc. I'm more guilty of liking something, jamming it over a period of a few weeks and then completely forgetting it exists when another new shiny thing (or things) come along... the ratings serve as great reminders in those instances. I never delete, but often amend ratings and I do take some pride in keeping them up-to-date (easier when you're dealing with 1,350 than 5,000-10,000 though, lol). |
50iL
11.14.19 | I also agree with Pots. Ratings are mostly to keep track of what I've heard and to seek similar music. Nothing more, nothing less. |
AsleepInTheBack
11.14.19 | @demon lol yeah, just cutting down my 1,500 ratings to 1350 to take out all the stuff I couldn't remember took more time than I'd care to admit. Im going to try an avoid the 'one and done' thing to avoid having to do a similar purge again. I do find it tricky not to though, just cause I always want to get on to the next shiny thing, cause yeah there's a ridiculous amount of music out there and I must have it all |
bloc
11.14.19 | I wish I could do that but I can't. I just like seeing my number keep growing and growing.
Over the past few years I have started to keep albums I dismiss on first listen only if there is a slight chance I will come back to it several months later and change my mind. Most 2.5s and anything below it get deleted immediately unless there are any standout tracks. |
