Pikazilla
10.25.19 | zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz |
DoofDoof
10.25.19 | 1,2,4 and 5 are varying degrees of good - not bothered about 3 or 6...or any of the others I've tried out
2 is 1 for me |
Pikazilla
10.25.19 | Strange, I had you down as a Filth fan for some reason |
DoofDoof
10.25.19 | Don't think I've even listened to that one the whole way through
Is it more noise and/or industrial-y? |
DoofDoof
10.25.19 | Still find it funny that 4 sound 75% like The National
Shouldn't be surprised as Berninger always goes on about them being a massive influence...still, an interesting thing as not sure the fanbases truly overlap |
Pikazilla
10.25.19 | Yes, the first two are very noisy - not industrially, but more like fuck-off heavy
Production is detrimental to one's enjoyment though. I'm sure if they rerecorded them, they would climb my list to the top spots. |
Pikazilla
10.25.19 | And honestly, if you didn't like The Seer, then don't waste your time with the new one - it's super-folky but in a coma inducingly boring kind of way. |
DoofDoof
10.25.19 | already listened - yes, as boring as everything from The Seer on.
turgid slog-worthy stuff locked in a holding pattern of doom |
Pikazilla
10.25.19 | Yeah, this one felt like he wrote about 8 minutes of music and then used that to pad out the one and a half hours |
DoofDoof
10.25.19 | it takes them the whole album to get to a nearly good song, the last one |
onionbubs
10.25.19 | 2 5 1 rest |
GhandhiLion
10.25.19 | neo swans zzzz |
Demon of the Fall
10.25.19 | Only heard Soundtracks, Children of God & Filth - would be safe to say I don't understand the appeal. I haven't given up just yet though. |
Pikazilla
10.25.19 | Might as well not bother with the rest then. You could give TBK a shot, but I don't see you liking it, man. |
Demon of the Fall
10.25.19 | Yeah I was wondering if their recent material was a major departure in style, they've been going a long damn time and discogs this large are intimidating. I feel as though my lack of success thus far shouldn't be seen as fatal given the sheer amount of material they've produced, but I guess that depends on the artist. |
DopeFiend
10.25.19 | Filth is in top 5. I don't think sludge metal would've ever existed if not for that record |
Pikazilla
10.25.19 | Yes, Filth rules |
tectactoe
10.25.19 | Have only listened to half the new once so far. It’s....not bad, but a bit of a let down based on my sky high expectations. |
zakalwe
10.25.19 | (listened to it five times already, what a slog).
lol. Good lad.
Band is a nonsense churning out nothingness to the delight of the desperate |
DoofDoof
10.25.19 | they do sound a lot like The National (esp your favourite High Violet) at times though you got to admit zak (don't believe me listen to 'Blind' from 4)
that...confuses me |
zakalwe
10.25.19 | A stuck in the waiting room NHS National. |
GhandhiLion
10.25.19 | https://youtu.be/IoEBGUKSnoQ
I don't hear it at all. |
Sowing
10.25.19 | thought about dl'ing the new one this morning but figured I'd stream it before purchasing. glad I waited based on this ranking. |
Pikazilla
10.25.19 | It's a disappointment for sure, Sowing. And unlike some of the lads itt, I have the top 8 records at 4.5+, so it's not like I'm dissing it because I hate the band's later iterations in general |
Frippertronics
10.25.19 | Funny to call the new record a slog then place CoG at 1
(Solid ranking tho, would personally place Cop at 5) |
Flugmorph
10.25.19 | not a big white light fan, otherwise pretty legit ranking |
Pikazilla
10.25.19 | CoG has a phenomenal atmosphere though. Totally nailed it on that record. |
Pikazilla
10.25.19 | Fripp you prefer Cop over Filth? |
Frippertronics
10.25.19 | Absolutely |
Flugmorph
10.25.19 | based |
Pikazilla
10.25.19 | Okay, fair enough haha |
Frippertronics
10.25.19 | Side two of Filth is a bit fillery for me, whereas Cop cuts the bullshit and is just eight songs of no nonsense brutality. |
Frippertronics
10.25.19 | I admire CoG for deviating from the formula entirely whereas Greed and Holy Money teased at it, but I think it's overly long. |
Pikazilla
10.25.19 | Side two of Filth is a bit fillery for me, whereas Cop cuts the bullshit and is just eight songs of no nonsense brutality.
That's funny because I think the exact opposite there. Also you're referring to just Disc 1 of CoG right? Because disc 2 is not technically part of the album afaik |
Frippertronics
10.25.19 | Nah I mean the actual album, which is just over an hour.
Length isn't necessarily the main issue, but the total lack of interesting songs imo (don't worry I'm well aware this is said about the newer albums, which I like a fair bit lol) |
Icebloom
10.25.19 | Soundtracks > White Light > Annihilator, good job.
"they do sound a lot like The National (esp your favourite High Violet)"
Hmm, are you serious? Love both bands, but no, I don't see this. Wholly different type of music. Maybe in the vocals, but even that feels as a stretch. Didn't know they were an influence on Matt. |
qwenta
10.25.19 | Great list. While light is my n1 though. |
CugnoBrasso
10.25.19 | White Light is probably the least swanish of them all but I love it. Great list, the first two Angels of Light records also deserve recognition. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.25.19 | I havent heard them all but Seer is worst regardless just because of lunacy, the worst song I've ever heard |
Pikazilla
10.25.19 | For some reason, I expected you to dislike all Swans haha |
gryndstone
10.25.19 | 15 is anything but |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.25.19 | i probably would if i listened to them now. but its been a few years and i used to like them |
CugnoBrasso
10.27.19 | My top 5 would be something like this
1. Seer
2. Soundtracks
3. White Light
4. To be Kind
5. Children of God |
Pikazilla
10.27.19 | Nice ranking. Can't go wrong with any of those in my eyes. |
Bedex
10.27.19 | This makes me want to do a Swans discog run mmmh, I haven't heard 1 in ages |
Wubs
10.28.19 | Accurate top 3. Though I love the new album and holy money also |
