09.05.19 | Are actually scary/creepy horror movies still being made? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Yeah it’s a LOT better than hereditary, and definitely one of my favourite horrors in the last decade |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Also I watched black coat daughter btw it was amazing. |
budgie
09.05.19 | nice!! you saw about oz perkins' next film? gretel & hansel.
@thalassic, past 12 years or so has probably been the best for actually creepy films |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Just looking into it now. I didn’t like I am the pretty thing anywhere near as much as blackcoat tho, curious about ur thoughts on it |
budgie
09.05.19 | took me ages before i decided to watch it because i already knew it was a nothing-happens experiment in atmosphere. when i was finally in the mood for a super super slow burn i went for it and really did enjoy it. but man that's a kind of film you really have to be in the mood for. still like blackcoat's daughter more of course, that film is probably going to overtake the original scream for my all time fav |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Yeah word I get that. I enjoyed it too but could see how someone would hate it for its sparsity and minimalism and feel a bit befuddled with it after blackcoat. |

09.05.19 | Has anyone seen Midsommar? is it good? |
BigBlob
09.05.19 | saw it couple weeks back in the cinema. fantastic atmosphere and all that.... but I dunno. some of it was really, really stupid. and other times it felt like a wicker man remake. for me a 3/5 |
rockandmetaljunkie
09.05.19 | wait, which version of the wicker man? because the one they made in the 70's was great movie |
budgie
09.05.19 | excited about that wickerman constant. original is a perfect 5/5 for me I loooove it |
BigBlob
09.05.19 | yeh the original is a classic. but you will see what I mean. Midsommar is pretty much a reimagining of it imo |

09.05.19 | "Midsommar is pretty much a reimagining of it imo"
as long as it doesn't have any mentioning of THE FUCKING BEES, i'm ok with it |

budgie
09.05.19 | are you talking about the kill list or kill list? I'm thinking about the English film about the cult |
BigBlob
09.05.19 | yeh I liked Kill List. dunno how, but they managed to give that film this amazing sense of dread. another horror thats worth a watch is Antichrist. its a Lars von Trier film so..... yeh you will either love it or think its the biggest POS ever |

09.05.19 | Midsommar is my favourite campy horror of recent times. Has a lot of unresolved subplots and whack pacing (likely due to it being cut from what was originally a 4 hour film) but it's thoroughly entertaining throughout afaic. Don't get the idea it's meant to be taken anywhere near as seriously as Hereditary. If you want a funky psychedelic break up movie featuring black Hugo weaving and the son of Rambo give it a peep. |

*It Comes at Night (Shults, 2017)
*mother! (Aronofsky, 2017) |
butt.
09.05.19 | I saw scary stories, it was fun. good halloween spirit and all that, kinda like a more adult version of goosebumps |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Midsommar shat all over hereditary in every way possible and completely outdid it on all fronts |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Mother was awesome, it comes at night was pretty forgettable |
butt.
09.05.19 | yup absolutely not. Hereditary was more coherent and far more "horror" than Midsommar. Love both movies, but Hereditary will be more remembered |
butt.
09.05.19 | oh and the acting. don't get me wrong, acting was great in both movies, but toni collette's performance is practically unbeatable |
Sinternet
09.05.19 | The shining and original wicker man are the best horrors ever don't @ me |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Lol hereditary coherent? Movie is overrated and aside from atmospheric qualities is something that has been done a hundred times over. |
butt.
09.05.19 | wicker man is great but I would put the thing above it |
butt.
09.05.19 | what was incoherent about it? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | The transition into the final act was so jarring it almost ruined the entire movie |
butt.
09.05.19 | I'm not sure what exactly you're referring to |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Hereditary isnt even close to the best atmospheric horror at that, while midsommar is absolutely bonkers and psychedelic in a way I've never experienced before |
DungeonBoy
09.05.19 | Midsommar is smoother in that regard agreed. Both were excellent though! Hereditary was the reason I was so stoked for Midsommar. Still the only movie i've seen in the theater this year though :/ |
butt.
09.05.19 | yeah it is bonkers and psychedelic, but that doesn't automatically make it better than Hereditary. They're very different, so it's almost not even fair to compare honestly |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Hereditary sacrificed it's own parable in the third act for hamfisted imagery, a mistake midsommar rectified |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | The meaning of heriditary was undermined by its direction while midsommars was underlined by it |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | From a cinematography perspective midsommar was unheard of for horror, lucid colors and broad daylight utilized in a subversive manner |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | That movie was a stroke of genius, heriditary ran out of paint |
robertsona
09.05.19 | I walked with a zombie is definitely dope |

09.05.19 | THE WAILING |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Unless it's in the odd case where there is a thought provoking statement to it, its trash |
brainmelter
09.05.19 | Idk while unique, the blinding light cinematography seemed pretty gimmicky to me after a while. Comparatively the movie was very different but it hit a lot of similar places for me (crazy cults, crumbling relationship dynamics, they all end up fucked at end due to unavoidable circumstances orchestrated by cult from the very beginning, etc) but don’t get me wrong ari aster is a great filmmaker and I love the shot composition in the movie but I left with everything I needed to see after a first viewing. Things were presented way more at face value, where as repeated viewings of Hereditary were rewarding. It was surprisingly predictable too in a lot of aspects, for example I knew the friend was going to Wicker Man them from the first 15 minutes
Yeah the end of Heridtary was a bit ham fisted but that orgy scene towards the end midsommar felt so trying and edgy ‘hERes nAKed PEopLe, aRenT yOu uComfOrtabLE??’
Edit: the wailing rules |
Thalassic
09.05.19 | The original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is still completely unfuckwithable in my book |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Because decapitating a retarded child 20 minutes into a film isnt edgy |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Midsommar didnt do anything just to be edgy it was all to set the smothering persistent discomfort that movies like mother! Succeeded in |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | U were meant to feel the disorientation of the characters and all the gratuity helped build that effect |
brainmelter
09.05.19 | I’m not saying hereditary didn’t have its fair share of edge (and naked people) but it felt a little more nuanced the first time around. Call me crazy but I think midsommar really lacked subtlety |
budgie
09.05.19 | "lucid colors and broad daylight utilized in a subversive manner" since we've had the wickerman mentioned, isn't the wickerman famous for this as well? |
brainmelter
09.05.19 | I get it was going for that effect, the trippy sequences and the suffocation while simultaneously being so isolated. I saw the movie Climax earlier this year and in comparison the drug induced parts felt lesser |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Yeah it lacked subtlety but it never was going for that, hereditary tried to maintain subtlety like its life depended on it and then completely butchered it at the end |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | And sure they are different films with different influence but I'd say midsommar outdid its predecessors while hereditary was outdone before it even came out |
budgie
09.05.19 | i've said this i think in other horror threads but because we're on the topic, what's the crazy love for toni collette's performance? the acting across the board in hereditary took me out of the film and was a major reason why i didn't come out of the experience with any positive impressions. she was unrealistically unhinged, i don't know, and the kid constantly crying at everything. only the father seemed like an actual human. but i keep reading people loving toni collette's performance so maybe it's just all over my head. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Agreed, toni was alright comparatively but damn that boy fucking sucked especially |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Meanwhile in midsommar this absolute nobody chick is firing on all cylinders giving me LIFE |
butt.
09.05.19 | I think about moments like her reaction to finding her dead daughter - probably one of the most gut-wrenching and miserably realistic performances I've seen - and the scene when she was standing at the foot of her son's bed in the middle of the night |
Thalassic
09.05.19 | That classroom scene in Hereditary when that guy smashes his nose on the table cracks me up tbh |
butt.
09.05.19 | I agree the boy in hereditary was the weakest link, especially his crying. but Toni stills runs circles around the chick in midsommar. The scene in the beginning with the car fumes, her crying, etc, was super well done but it felt like a less effective version of Charlie's death in hereditary. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Ari is great at directing women in utter anguish and misery that's for sure |
butt.
09.05.19 | yes, dude knows how to write and direct pure agony |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Dude the car fumes wailing was absolutely haunting, as was her absolute shock in her frumpy flower dress near the end lmao |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Car fume and decap reaction scenes are definitely comparable tho and were absolutely heart wrenching in both |
butt.
09.05.19 | yeah for sure car fumes scene was incredible, but like I said, we just saw him go for the same effect last year and this felt like a rehash but one small step down |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Sure it may have been a rehash to some extent but I saw both in theaters and I will say the car fumes one made me even more uncomfortable and weary of the rest of the film |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Like it made me want to walk out it hurt so bad. But the context I found especially sympathetic compared to the decap |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.05.19 | Speaking if unnerving anguish, I always find the scene in the lobster where the chick jumps out the window and is suffering in the background to be super disturbing and unsettling lol |
budgie
09.05.19 | have you guys seen excision? the very ending scene has the most chilling scream, ahhhhh! emotion overload

09.06.19 | Wouldn't exactly call Midsommar a horror |
Gyromania
09.06.19 | Also wouldn't call it horror per se but the house that jack built is amazing.
Going to see IT pt 2 tomorrow |

09.06.19 | Babadook is a great experience. No jump scares, no cliches, just a "underdog" in the genre. |
Gyromania
09.06.19 | Yeah Babadook is a decade contender, one of my faves for sure |
Divaman
09.06.19 | How about Drag Me to Hell? Not saying it's the greatest horror film of all time, but it is a fun, solid little movie. |
budgie
09.06.19 | i've seen it a handful of times and always want to like it more than i actually do. idk why it falls kinda flat for me, i love all the evil dead films |
budgie
09.06.19 | ah am putting on invasion of the body snatchers
never seen! ! ! !!1 ';,,;' |
brainmelter
09.06.19 | so hyped for the lighthouse |
Thalassic
09.06.19 | I didn't like Drag Me to Hell either. It felt a bit flaccid tbh. Lacked some cojones.
I'm curious about The Lighthouse. 10 years ago I wouldn't have thought Pattinson would actually go on to become a legit actor. He was on fire in that movie Good Time as well. |
butt.
09.06.19 | Just saw IT 2 last night. Great movie. Very long, but very great.
Stoked for The Lighthouse |

09.06.19 | I see this is almost at 200 comments, graham cracker pots must have shown up |

09.06.19 | Ooh. Both versions of the film (50's original and 70's remake) are really good. Enjoy! |
butt.
09.06.19 | what are you referring to |
Uzumaki
09.06.19 | Sorry, referring to budgie's watching of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers". |

09.06.19 | if you're looking for comedy horror watch murder party (in case you havent). super entertaining |

09.06.19 | murder party is saulnier's weakest film for sure. it's not terrible, but pretty meh. I could name 100 better horror comedies |
alamo
09.06.19 | please do i'd love to watch them
i was high while watching murder party but im pretty sure it ruled |
budgie
09.06.19 | i fucking love murder party, seen it so many times. definitely like it murder than blue ruin, though that was still good.
"I could name 100 better horror comedies" haha. murder party is my absolute favorite horror comedy. unless you consider more loose ones likes scream, killer klowns from outer space, return of the living dead |
butt.
09.06.19 | haha for the sake of time I'll just throw out some of my favs. Evil Dead II, Dead Alive, Tucker and Dale, Trick 'r Treat, Cabin in the Woods, Re-Animator, Shaun of the Dead, Return of the Living Dead, Scream, You're Next, Cabin Fever, Stitches, Slither, Hatchet, Dead Snow, Behind the Mask, Severance, Gremlins, Tusk, Idle Hands, Silent Night Deadly Night, Zombeavers, Cooties |
butt.
09.06.19 | Chopping Mall, Drag Me to Hell, Happy Death Day, Terrifier |
adr
09.06.19 | it's already mentioned, but watch Possession (1981) it's my favourite horror movie ever. Also The Cremator (1969) is pretty fucked up czech new wave horror
House (1977) for surrealistic comedy/horror mashup experience
The Fall of the House of Usher (1928) - oldschool gothic horror in the same vein as Nosferatu
Eyes Without a Face (1960) is pretty good
The Babadook is not bad for a more recent horror movie.
|
butt.
09.06.19 | I'm mad that I still haven't seen Possession or House of Usher. |
artiswar
09.06.19 | no mention of Coherence or The Loved Ones? I fucking love those. And have you seen the extreme french films budgie? |
budgie
09.06.19 | i might as well input my thoughts on these
"Evil Dead II" i put this more as horror-comedy than comedy-horror but yeah, 4.5/5, original is 5/5 for me, like top 10 film
"dead alive/braindead" i actually never liked this film very much. kick ass for the lord huh
"Tucker and Dale" i enjoyed it every time i've seen it, but i like murder party way more
"Re-Animator" sacrilege to say but i think this one is kind of overrated. i love combs' character though, to death
"Shaun of the Dead" never liked this film lol.
"Return of the Living Dead" as before, i think this is more horror comedy than comedy horror but yeah it's another 5/5 top 10 film
"Scream" same as return of the living dead, 5/5 top 10 film
"you're next" it's a good slasher/home invasion, not horror comedy nor comedy horror though
"cabin fever" original is alright. remake is also alright
"stiches" haven't seen this one. clown film right?
"slither" good dialogue, good film. bath scene is classic
"hatchet" haven't seen!
"dead snow" it's pretty OK
"behind the mask" i really thought this meta-slasher was really average
"severance" haven't seen in way too long to comment, will make a note to rewatch
"gremlins" rewatched the first one recently and thought it was OK
"tusk" hated it, lol
"idle hands" never finished it, didn't like it
"silent night deadly night" haven't seen
"zombeavers" SUPER awesome horror comedy, nice to see it listed
"cooties" pretty average except for a couple moments "i do crossfit" or rainn wilson calling elijah wood a hobbit come to mind
"chopping mall" pretty bad for the 80s cheese category IMO
"drag me to hell" doesn't come close to evil dead I/II IMO
"happy death day" i didn't really think too highly of this one or the sequel
"terrifier" haven't seen
|
butt.
09.06.19 | damn budge do you even like horror lol. most of these are super fun movies, and yeah I wasn't bothering to differ between horror-comedy and comedy-horror. it's a thin line in my book. re: you're next, it has just enough dark humor in it for me to consider horror comedy |
budgie
09.06.19 | yeah def thin line. i just sometimes keep the distinction up because it can be awkward to categorize for example scream and tucker and dale vs evil in the same way. tucker and dale vs evil is pretty light hearted material whereas scream has a really dark sinister tone
"do i even like horror" keep in mind i was considering the films you listed in relation to murder party, which is one of my favorite films, so almost everything is worse |
Thalassic
09.06.19 | Only movies out of Budgie's list that I enjoy are Scream, You're Next, Evil Dead II and Hatchet. |

A l’Interieur, Alien, An American Werewolf in London, Audition, The Beyond, The Blair Witch Project, The Burning, Dawn of the Dead ’78, Deep Red, Don’t Look Now, Eden Lake, Eraserhead, Event Horizon, Evil Dead ‘81, The Exorcist, The Fly, Halloween ’78, Haute Tension, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, The House of the Devil, Ichi the Killer (if this counts as horror), Intruder, Inland Empire, It Follows, Jacob’s Ladder, Kill List, Lost Highway (if this counts as horror), Maniac '80, Martyrs, Mulholland Drive (if this counts), The New York Ripper, Night of the Living Dead ’68, Pop Skull, Possession, Prince of Darkness, Psycho '60, REC, Repulsion, Rosemary’s Baby, Scream, The Shining, Suspiria ‘77, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ’74, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre II, The Thing '82, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Videodrome, The Witch, The Wicker Man ‘73, Zombi 2 |

Yeah it's late over here so I'm probably a bit slow |
Thalassic
09.06.19 | Yeah, Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive probably don't count as "horror"
Inland Empire, Eraserhead and Fire Walk With Me do fully count in my book |
budgie
09.06.19 | "Are you imitating the kid that gets necklaced? " nah that was just my reaction to being reminded of that film |
robertsona
09.06.19 | David lynch is an interesting case. Clearly always inflected with uncanny horror. You could probably write a lot about “horror” and Lynch yah yah cool stuff |
Uzumaki
09.06.19 | points for mentioning Audition and Ichi the Killer
I'd probably class Ichi as a yakuza film with black comedy. It's gory, but I don't think it's pure horror. |
robertsona
09.06.19 | I’ve seen one (1) scene from audition and it’s the thing that upsets me most—THEEEE most— when I think about it. I don’t dive too much into gore or gross out type stuff tho |
Thalassic
09.06.19 | Budgie, you don't like Eden Lake?
Some David Lynch movies have a horror undertone. Several scenes in his movies fucked me up more than any straight up horror movie. Like the "bum scene" in Mulholland Drive, the Bowie cameo or "You stole my corn" scenes in Fire Walk With Me, basically all of Inland Empire...
Ichi the Killer is probably more a whacked out yakuza movie than a horror movie, still has somewhat of a disturbing vibe |
budgie
09.06.19 | i feel about eden lake the way i feel about funny games: seriously grim, seriously well done, but hard to handle! |
budgie
09.06.19 | "no mention of Coherence or The Loved Ones? I fucking love those. And have you seen the extreme french films budgie? "
coherence is super fun, and the girl in the loved ones is such an underrated villain. that last scene with her on the road is chilling, she's way cooler than chucky, jason, etc... should've been an icon
extreme french films: as much as i'm a francophile or whatever, i don't really like french horror, though i still need to get around to uh, a l'interieur. i've seen dans ma peau and raw, both were solid but the extremism genre isn't my favorite, i didn't really care about les martyrs that much but i haven't seen it since it came out so probably ripe for a rewatching. |
artiswar
09.06.19 | 'i feel about eden lake the way i feel about funny games: seriously grim, seriously well done, but hard to handle!'
those are both top 10 most fucked up films easily |
budgie
09.06.19 | yeah... megan is missing & the girl next door as well |
artiswar
09.06.19 | I didn't like l'interieur much, it actually traumatized me a bit in high-school. It's a great movie but it makes you squirm the entire time, it's really unpleasant and exploits a lot of the stuff I'm really squeamish about (graphic neck mutilation, violence against a pregnant woman). The other French extremity films are way better imo, especially Martyrs, High Tension and Frontier(s). |
BigBlob
09.06.19 | Frontier(s) is awful though |
artiswar
09.06.19 | I thought it would be awful but it wasn't that bad. The revenge ending was kinda really satisfying. |

09.08.19 | I've had terrible luck finding any good horror movie lately. I've watched plenty but they ranged from mediocre to terrible. The few I liked (or enjoyed to an extent):
The Autopsy of Jane Doe - Not really "scary" in the traditional sense but a nice deviation from typical horror, even if the ending felt a bit underwhelming. Worth watching imo
The Endless - Saw this on Netflix. It's not a high-budget film but that doesn't hurt it. Also more of a thriller/suspense, not much gore really -- but it's pretty weird and just gets crazier as it goes on. I liked this one a lot.
The Haunting of Hill House -- (Netflix series, not the movie). Thought this would be terrible but I actually liked it a lot. It's only one season (next season is a completely different plot). Definitely recommend watching this one, not really your typical horror.
The Ritual - Well, it's not terrible, not exactly great either. It was ok idk lol you might like it more, I just wouldn't suggest prioritizing it. |
budgie
09.08.19 | all great picks hexfire! i really loved autopsy of jane doe in particular |
hexfix93
09.08.19 | Yeah that movie is cool. I just wish they explained the ending a bit more conclusively -- like the father had his theory about what she was but I'm not sure how accurate he was. Not really a big deal though, just a minor gripe. Movie is still awesome. I also appreciated the historical accuracy regarding Salem since most movies throw that out the window.
Kinda funny you made this list though because I was legit about to make the same one a few days ago lol. I've been losing my shit trying to find other good ones. |

09.08.19 | original is one of my favorite films for sure, just rewatched pretty recently actually. i only like 2 & 3 because emily perkins is my favorite person ever but as films i don't really think they stand up well to #1, at all, actually, pretty bad films lol. imo. emily perkins though |
JeetJeet
09.08.19 | Check out Apostle. |
hexfix93
09.08.19 | Never heard of that one haha. I'll check it out, couldn't think of a movie for tonight so gonna go with that.
Have you (or anyone) seen The Conjuring 2? I've been hesitant to watch it. I've heard bad things about Annabelle so I'm not sure how any of those turned out either. |
budgie
09.08.19 | ah i don't really like any of the james wan haunted house films, so i can't recommend it. |
artiswar
09.08.19 | Ginger Snaps 2 is the fucking shit tbh, massively underrated. But yeah, the first one is the classic. Third one is pretty bad but it's kind of a fascinating bizarre trainwreck that has some moments of genuine entertainment. And YES, Emily Perkins is amazing, wish she acted more. |
budgie
09.08.19 | wish she would just marry me already |
budgie
09.09.19 | AND it's a fucking shame she wasn't cast for IT CHAPTER II. what the fuck, right?!?? |
artiswar
09.09.19 | How the fuck do you not like GS2? It's like... Emily Perkins: The Movie |
artiswar
09.09.19 | hahaaa I liked her in the original IT even though I hated that adaptation. She had a sweet cameo in Bryan Fuller's Dead Like Me which was a pretty sweet short-lived series. |
budgie
09.09.19 | i like gs2 for her, despite the rest of the film. without her i wouldn't even have remembered i had ever watched it
have you seen american mary? |
artiswar
09.09.19 | I didn't like American Mary that much but Katherine Isabelle was amazing and it had a really interesting take on Bloody Mary but I think it went off the rails towards the end. GS2 is a genuinely satisfying, effective horror film. Fight Me. |
budgie
09.09.19 | ah, i love american mary
pretty sure i recognized her in one of the friday the 13th films too. hmm |
artiswar
09.09.19 | I think I missed her cameo in Friday The 13th, it's been like 8 years since I watched those films, which one was she in? GS2 is fucking great though. Intro credits alone are god-tier. |

09.09.19 | @hex "Have you (or anyone) seen The Conjuring 2?"
Yes Conjuring 2 is honestly almost as good as the first. Very solid. And the first Annabelle movie gets a bad rap, but both sequels got good reviews and the second is my personal favorite |
Lizardwave
09.09.19 | it’s not necessarily horror but damn if requiem for a dream doesn’t make me piss my pants |
butt.
09.09.19 | This weekend I watched:
Train to Busan - much better than expected, probably in top 10 zombie movies now
Audition - first half is slow, gets better in the finale. probably wouldn't rewatch
House on Haunted Hill ('59) - also pretty slow, only a couple memorable scenes
The Ring - classic 00's horror
The Invisible Man ('33) - Actually really loved this, the effects were great for 1933! |
artiswar
09.09.19 | The Inside fucked me up, I'm not really a gore hound and it made me feel woozy. Definitely one of the hardest watches for me. Martyrs fucked me up too, but in the best possible way. Remake was an abortion though. |
budgie
09.09.19 | i tried to watch inside for the 2nd time two nights ago. can't do it |
butt.
09.09.19 | too gory? |
budgie
09.09.19 | i think it's the early scene where the pregnant woman gets stabbed in the stomach, idk i just stop the film there lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.09.19 | I can never watch Martyrs |
artiswar
09.09.19 | I had to look away multiple times during Inside and I was squirming the entire time basically. Ridiculously effective film.
Pots, you should really watch Martyrs. It's not very gory, it's just emotionally exhausting to watch. It's actually oddly beautiful in certain parts. One of the most unique horror films I've ever seen and it leaves an indelible mark. |
budgie
09.09.19 | "I had to look away multiple times during Inside and I was squirming the entire time basically. Ridiculously effective film." you should check out dans ma peau, that is fucking effective as far as making you squirm goes |
Uzumaki
09.09.19 | Just curious; anything you didn’t particularly care for with Audition that’s influencing your decision? |
artiswar
09.09.19 | I heard about that one budgie and I just can't do it. Having had multiple people in my life who self-harmed, I don't think I could sit through it. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.09.19 | Ur the first person I've seen say martyrs isnt gorey. I've read about and seen stills for certain scenes that make me want to die inside |
artiswar
09.09.19 | I mean one of the last scenes where the girl is skinned I didn't find hard to look at. It looked like a Tool video tbh. Plus you don't actually see her getting skinned. The film just makes you depressed rather than revulsed. It's really bleak, but I can name a dozen more gorey hard-to-watch films off the top of my head. |
artiswar
09.09.19 | Btw has anyone sat through Men Behind The Sun? I only got up to the first kill and I was so shocked/disturbed by it I had to stop there, and I heard it gets even worse... |
BAT
09.09.19 | Yepp, tis pretty brutal. Probably the only movie where an actual child corpse gets dissected |
budgie
09.09.19 | never heard of it! |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.09.19 | Well it's nice to know u dont watch her get skinned lol but the visual of her with nothing but her face left is haunting. Same with the reverse where they just cut the chicks face off |
BAT
09.09.19 | unit 731 the movie or less, give it a wikipedia super fucked up japanese history lesson alongside the rape of nanking. its kinda like a historical torture movie, one of the common 'most fucked up' movies you'd see listed on imdb back in the forum days. i wouuld say its one of the harder sits i've come across |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.09.19 | I've read about that movie and even reading about it was hard to stomach |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.09.19 | I know he didnt mean it to be an exploitation film and the historic component seperates it but exploitation films in general are just so abhorrent |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.09.19 | What's the scoop on that from the inside movie or whatever |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.09.19 | On an aside every time I read people try to call salo high brow artsploitation it makes me scoff
That movie is a fucking worthless piece of shit. |
artiswar
09.09.19 | Pots where do they cut a chick's face off? I'm confused.
BAT what did you think of the arm scene in MBTS? I closed the window, deleted the movie, then uninstalled VLC. |
artiswar
09.09.19 | Never watched Salo, I draw the line at eating human excrement thank you. |
BAT
09.09.19 | theres a 2nd arm scene in it that fucked with me even harder, they freeze this dudes arms completely blue than start cracking his hands apart with a ruler. annnd yeah when it comes down to it, it iiis just a shitty exploitation movie buuut the historical context elevates it to being uniquely fucked. theres too many fucked up scenes to list but an example would be someone thrown into a pressure chamber until guts shot out of his ass. it's way more explicit than salo buuuut there's some similarities in terms of how the contents presented. haven seen inside in like a decade but i remember it being fun but a bit over the top |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.09.19 | @art I read and saw stills for it! Maybe two movies got confused. But there was the one where the chick gets skinned and another where just then chicks face is skinned |
artiswar
09.09.19 | I think you might be confusing stills from the remake with the original Pots. There's nothing as tasteless as that in Martyrs (2008). It deconstructs exploitation and 'torture-porn' and you're not remotely meant to enjoy the way it's depicted.
As for MBTS, it's shining a light on real events that humanity would probably rather forget happened, which gives it an extra hefty layer of fucked-upness. Too much for me to sit through. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.10.19 | Well you are doing a better job at selling it than anyone else has done so far and many have tried haha |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.10.19 | Cannibal holocaust always gets thrown on those lists but I didnt think it was that bad tbh. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.10.19 | Salo is just an edge fest that shouldnt be held any higher than bottom of the barrel shit like the human centipede sequels |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.10.19 | A couple others I'm too scared to watch off the top of my head are Serbian film and the patoopskydoopsky tapes or whatever |
artiswar
09.10.19 | The Poughkeepsie Tapes is a pretty sweet sleeper hit. Not sure why you're scared to watch it, it's super tame. Creepy as fuck, but tame. |
BAT
09.10.19 | cannibal holocaust is actually a pretty awesome grindhouse movie. salo isssss overhyped garbo, marginally interesting. a serbian film pretty much lives up to its rep buuuut i'd argue something like cattle decapitations forced gender reassignment music video(annd all its wanna bes that i havent bothered to watch) outgores the entirety of serbian film |
artiswar
09.10.19 | Wanted to see Serbian Film cause I've heard it's actually good but I think I'm too pussy. Also too scared to watch Cannibal Holocaust and Green Inferno. |
BAT
09.10.19 | i'd say cannibal is more up my alley, serbian film isn't poorly made buuut still kinda hard to recommend without warnings |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.10.19 | Shouldnt be too scared of cannibal holocaust. There are 2 animal scenes which they literally just kill a spider monkey and a turtle the way u would if u were gonna eat it... |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.10.19 | Which is why it's ironic that people are so squeamish about it when they eat meat that's killed far more inhumanely |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.10.19 | Then there are like one or two memorable goreyish scenes but they are super over the top and fleeting that they arent bad |
artiswar
09.10.19 | yeah I'm starting to realize the hype about how extreme CH is is a bit overblown. Might watch it.
Thoughts on Martyrs BAT? I know it's a bit polarizing, curious where it landed for you. |
butt.
09.10.19 | Currently watching Child’s Play 3
It’s exactly what you’d expect of the third Child’s Play movie |
budgie
09.10.19 | ppooots did you watch lake mungo? |
BAT
09.10.19 | childs play 3 is kinda awesome, love the bullet swap scene. martyrs was actually pretty good, i need to give it a rewatch but i'd say its one of the most accessible films out of the 00s extreme-french flicks, not as torture-y as it's plot would indicate. for comparison i liked it more than inside |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.10.19 | What makes inside so gross? And no I forgot about that one budge i did have It downloaded but my comp pooped |
BAT
09.10.19 | inside i didn't have much of a problem with violence wise, once random people start showing up at the house it kinda loses its tension. still a solid simple low-budg shock film, the lead actresses were really good |
budgie
09.10.19 | "What makes inside so gross?" it's not gross necessarily, but early into the film there's a pregnant woman getting stabbed in the stomach. i thought i had a high capacity for gore but that's just too much. please watch lake mungo dude! as i said before, top 5 film for me. scream, jaws, halloween, blackcoat's daughter, lake mungo. watch it!!! |

butt.
09.10.19 | yup im all caught up on ST |
butt.
09.10.19 | also in the mood for oldies lately. there are so many old dracula and frankenstein movies its ridiculous |
budgie
09.10.19 | "guys what should I watch tonight."
watch banshee chapter! |
budgie
09.10.19 | it's not an oldie though it's like 2017. |
butt.
09.10.19 | that's another one I've been hearing about for a while. what's it like? |
butt.
09.10.19 | and I liked season 3, better than season 2 probably. but 1 is still king |
budgie
09.10.19 | butt.: regarding banshee chapter? |
butt.
09.10.19 | yeah |
budgie
09.10.19 | butt.: banshee chapter rundown: it'u ins kind of lovecraftian, there's a drug that, when you ingest it, it exposes you to interdimensional horrors, you know? so the film is about a journalist who's trying to figure out what happened to her college roommate who took the drug. and it has a hunter thompson figure in it, too. awesome, awesome, awesome film |
butt.
09.10.19 | oh cool, that sounds pretty dope |
budgie
09.10.19 | "Also too scared to watch Cannibal Holocaust and Green Inferno." green inferno isn't that bad gore wise. it is a pile of shit though, lol |
wwf
09.10.19 | banshee chapter is a lot of fun yee |
butt.
09.11.19 | Sorry guys, you gave me good recs but here I am watching seed of Chucky. Just gonna binge and finish the series tonight since I haven’t seen em all yet |
budgie
09.11.19 | speaking of, anyone check the new chucky film with aubrey plaza? |
butt.
09.11.19 | yes, it was awesome. great mix of creepy and funny and some cool inventive ideas to keep it fresh. highly recommend |
budgie
09.11.19 | nice! i definitely am excited. the original was pretty cute for 1987 or whenever |
BigBlob
09.11.19 | second half of Cannibal Holocaust is up there with my fav horror films. it actually feels like it really happened |
butt.
09.11.19 | yeah the director was arrested because they actually believed he had those actors killed. and the actors were paid to lay low after the release to make it seem more real |
BigPleb
09.11.19 | Got some underrated ones here for you, budgie.
Frailty
In the Mouth of Madness
Lake Mungo
The Orphanage
Jacob's Ladder |
budgie
09.11.19 | pleb!! look at #4 on this list https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=1072392&listid=185784
;DDDD
i haven't seen frailty or the orphanage!! will check, thanks bro! |
mindleviticus
09.11.19 | Martyrs was way more disturbing than I thought it was going to be but it wasn't terribly gory. The movie was really good but I thought the latter half of the movie's plot made no sense. There were moments where I legitimately had to look away though for a long period of time. No other film has really made me do that. (you know what I'm talking about for those that have seen the movie (******SPOILER--the basement girl--SPOILER ******)) |
BigPleb
09.11.19 | Martyrs is very grim, yeah.
One of those films I'm glad I can say I 'saw' but I never feel the need to go back and view it again.
@budgie niiiccceee, Frailty is so good man.
Lake Mungo is amazing isn't it, just incredibly bleak and well performed. |
mindleviticus
09.11.19 | Recently watched Funny Games too and that really fucked me up, despite the fact it's supposed to be satirical. I found that tougher to sit through than martyrs honestly. |
budgie
09.11.19 | lake mungo is beyond beautiful. when i saw it, that's the most terrified i've ever been in film watching sort of setting. and then it sat with me for a couple of weeks.. which turned into a kind of existential terror. and then months later i watched a review of the movie and just it shot up from "perfectly terrifying film" to "beautiful experiment in grief and existentialism" and i just worship lake mungo so much for, like, i mean what's the budget for that film? it does so much with so little. everybody needs to experience that film. but at the same time it's so fucking scary that i don't wish that phone camera scene upon anyone. |
budgie
09.11.19 | regarding martyrs: there was an american remake, has anyone seen it? is it total shit? lol. i think the reception was really bad but i like bad movies. (i loved RINGS and that movie got shit from all sides) |
mindleviticus
09.11.19 | yeah it's really bad. they try to make it way more optimistic and it doesn't work. plus the acting is horrible |
BigPleb
09.11.19 | @budgie the Martyrs remake is terrible, just feels like a typical US horror remake with all the originals effectiveness sucked out of it.
|
BigPleb
09.11.19 | Tbh there has only been one film that has ever truly affected me after the credits stopped rolling: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
I don't know what it is but every time I go back and watch it I'm teleported into that zone of terror that you can't really understand once the film has finished.
Best horror film ever made imo. |
mindleviticus
09.11.19 | TCM was a pretty slow burn imo but once it gets near the end it's so effective. |
budgie
09.11.19 | i really like the first TCM, it's def up there with the classics: jaws, alien, halloween etc. i think the 2nd was a miss for me, though it was fun, i guess. and then all the sequels and prequels and whatever i don't think i liked them very much. 1st one is great though yeah for sure |
budgie
09.11.19 | "Recently watched Funny Games " yeah funny games is impossible to watch haha. jesus christ. |
butt.
09.11.19 | glad someone else loves Lake Mungo as much as me. Showing it to my buddy soon for the first time and I'm so excited for him |
budgie
09.11.19 | nice dude! hopefully lordepoots watches it soon |
butt.
09.11.19 | that whole cell phone scene is one of 3 or 4 scenes, ever, that legitimately terrifies me. the others probably all come from Signs lol |
BigPleb
09.11.19 | Signs has one of the best jumpscares ever. |
budgie
09.11.19 | i remember just that scene where the alien walks infront of the window, i don't remember anything else? but i haven't seen that film since it came out in like 2004 or whenever |
BigPleb
09.11.19 | Yeah that's the scene haha.
Wolf Creek is another grim one, just a bleak atmosphere throughout. |
alamo
09.11.19 | watched it 2 last weekend, thought it was pretty disappointing =/
though the visuals and horror stuff were on point the narrative was as shitty as it could be |
butt.
09.11.19 | the signs birthday party scene is definitely the scariest and the one most people remember. but also don't forget alien on the roof, leg in the cornfield, hand in the coal chute, alien in the pantry (oh god), etc |
budgie
09.11.19 | dude wolf creek pissed me off so much. that scene where she shoots the guy in the neck and then doesn't do ANYTHING. like, he's on the ground, in a shed with like a million weapons in it. just take a fucking screwdriver at least and make sure he's dead-dead. god damn pisses me off just thinking about it. |
BigPleb
09.11.19 | Or just beat him over the head with the butt of the rifle haha, it is dumb agreed. |
BigBlob
09.11.19 | anyone seen Dont Look Now? the ending of that film is next level freaky |
BigPleb
09.11.19 | Girl in the red raincoat? Ye, subtle but effective movie. |
BigBlob
09.11.19 | yeh has one of the strangest atmospheres of any horror. really well done |
BigPleb
09.11.19 | Kind of feels more like a psychological drama, but there's definitely horror elements in there. |
budgie
09.11.19 | who are you talking to? |
BigBlob
09.11.19 | XD |
BigPleb
09.11.19 | Hahaha. |
budgie
09.11.19 | oh lol bigblog bigpleb |
BigBlob
09.11.19 | yeh its the unwritten rule that we aren't allowed to post on threads at the same time : ( |
BigBlob
09.11.19 | people click on it expecting quality content from pleb, but instead they get my crap |
budgie
09.11.19 | aw i think you're solid bigblob |
BigPleb
09.11.19 | Lol my content is hardly 'quality', you rule blob *fist bump* |
butt.
09.11.19 | side note, bride of chucky was fookin awesome |
budgie
09.11.19 | pots did you wathc mungo yet? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.12.19 | Yep |
budgie
09.12.19 | bro what bro did you think bro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! give us a write-up bro!!!!!!!!!! bro egarran!! |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.12.19 | Just kidding not yet |
Thalassic
09.12.19 | Oh yeah, Lake Mungo
I like that one |
unclereich
09.12.19 | blackcoat's daughter was a bit to slow for me and I didn't feel like the payoff was worth the slog |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.12.19 | Big fan of a good atmospheric slow burner with a hollow ending so I loved it |
budgie
09.12.19 | i devour every second of that "slog" lol. it's so delicious |
budgie
09.12.19 | poots by hollow ending do you mean bleak ending or meaningless ending? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.12.19 | Hollow in effect... so bleak in execution. I like movies that arent wrapped up in a conventionally neat and contented manner, ones that make you FEEL hollow |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.12.19 | For example: Valhalla rising, blue valentine, virtually everything by david lynch |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.12.19 | Definitely not saying the ending of February was meaningless, far from it |
budgie
09.12.19 | yeah that's what i thought you meant. the movie sometimes gets some flak for having a bad ending, but no way, the ending is beautifully sad. fucking masterpiece infact |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.12.19 | Ugh NORMIES |
budgie
09.12.19 | i can't remember the ending to valhalla rising very well. arrows? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.12.19 | That ending is magnificent, indeed that perfect marriage of beauty and melancholy that just haunts you for days. Such a visceral combination of emotions I find |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.12.19 | @budge basically one eye and the kid get back to the coast just to be surrounded by the indigenous, one eye exchanges his life for the kid and is beaten to death and the child is left |
unclereich
09.12.19 | man I wish I could discuss this with you guys irl, we seem to be likeminded when it comes to slow burn horror. I was surprised that this didn't do much for me. I feel like it was an attempt to deviate as far away as possible to the pitfalls of modern horror. what ended up happening was a film with too insignificant a payoff. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.12.19 | Well for me it was just tragic, she spent years yearning for the connection she felt to the demonic presence, she just didnt want to be alone |
unclereich
09.12.19 | Emma Roberts having an acting career is tragic in and of itself |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.12.19 | She sacrificed her morals for companionship when everyone else left her and then she kills again to try and reestablish that link just to realize that she is still utterly alone |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.12.19 | Haha I love Emma Roberts man SCREAM QUEEEENS |
unclereich
09.12.19 | she's a real qt
yea but due to the brevity and subtlety of the plot I don't really care about her fate |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.12.19 | I did, kiernan shipka was incredible |
budgie
09.12.19 | aw ok poots it's been so long. i remember just loving it for the atmosphere, such a juicy film.
unclereich: i don't want to use the term payoff because it makes me feel like i was sacrificing my time in the "build up", i think every second is great, as i said, but anyway, the ending seemed powerful each time i watch the film: rose's father mentions "do you believe in god? i see god in the unlikely things that happen", which gets kat thinking, oh maybe satan will come back to me now, so she does the you know what, but despite it all, he's not coming back, and she just crumbles under the realization that she's totally alone in life. the direction of the film pretty elegantly ensures that the truth about satan is ambiguous - maybe she developed him as a coping mechanism for loneliness after having lost her parents, or maybe there actually was a satan figure in the shadows. that ending is so glorious. |
unclereich
09.12.19 | she's weird looking and easy to dislike for sure |
budgie
09.12.19 | yeah what pots said, haha. |
budgie
09.12.19 | "I did, kiernan shipka was incredible " yeah this again for me, kiernan's performance pulls me in so deeply that i empathize so hard with her character. even just when the schoolmaster tells her he won't be there for her piano performance just feels so sad. she rules |
unclereich
09.12.19 | no these things are all true for sure but they are extremely overt, I felt like I had to work for nothing. now we can argue whether or not this is a bad thing. for my own viewership it is |
budgie
09.12.19 | emma roberts was screechingly annoying in scream 4 but i guess that worked for her character. i don't think i've seen her in anything else |
unclereich
09.12.19 | man it's so weird I don't agree with graham on a flick, I really didn't care for her or really any of the performances |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.12.19 | Ah well, I bet ud hate his netflix movie then |
budgie
09.12.19 | the "payoff" was actually pretty creepy for me in i am the pretty thing. lucy boynton as a ghost is so beautiful |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.12.19 | The one thing I couldnt stand in that movie was the main actress. She was supposed to be what? Early 20s? Fucking plastic surgery had her lookin like a 40 year old duck. |
budgie
09.15.19 | i really liked the childs play remake. fun horror comedy. idk if the casting was that good though, i dont think most of the main actors did their roles well. but everything else was great, comedy was def better than og |
wwf
09.15.19 | emma roberts was incredible in scream queens. like reallyyyy fuckin good |
budgie
09.16.19 | anyone see mother, camp dread, nekrotronic, |
budgie
09.16.19 | tone deaf, or haunt? |
Uzumaki
09.16.19 | Arronofsky’s “Mother!”? |
budgie
09.16.19 | 2017 one |
butt.
09.16.19 | Yeah. Great movie. I don’t wanna spoil anything, but just understand that there is a lottt going on. More than you realize. Pay attention to details when you watch it |
alamo
09.16.19 | "emma roberts was incredible in scream queens. like reallyyyy fuckin good"
yesssssssssssssssssssssssssss such a good show |
fogza
09.16.19 | Scream queens was hilarious. Emma R stood out in the few things I've seen her in, even when the movie isn't that good. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.16.19 | Also shes hot in the face |
budgie
09.16.19 | i like her more with dark hair |
Uzumaki
09.16.19 | Highly metaphorical. Once you realize that, “Mother!” is easy to understand. |
budgie
09.16.19 | jennifer lawrence annoys me so we'll see how i like it. loved black swan, though, and requiem for a dream was.. you know.
watched april fools day last night, 1986, was pretttty sweet |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.16.19 | Ok I fucking HATED jennifer Lawrence and put off mother! a long time because of it but that movie made me change my tune a bit. She nailed the role. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.16.19 | Probably my favorite of whatshisface's films |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.16.19 | aronofsky, that's his face |
budgie
09.16.19 | ok. did u see childs play remake pots? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.16.19 | Not yet but want. Aubrey is bae |
budgie
09.16.19 | shes straight up the worst part of the movie. idk whose wise idea it was to cast AUBREY PLAZA as a CONCERNED MOTHER. otherwise the movie was a pretty sweet horror comedy which didn't play it too safe, lots of nice kills and gore |
budgie
09.16.19 | maybe casting aubrey plaza in her worst imaginable role was some kinda of meta-wink actually. hmmm |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.16.19 | Lmao. That does sound like a counter intuitive role for her |
budgie
09.21.19 | just finished Haunt (2019)
wasn't expecting anything just a random watch
holy shit it was awesome!
maybe favorite movie of the year |
Thalassic
09.21.19 | Anyone watching that French series Marianne on Netflix? |
TheNotrap
09.21.19 | I came here to say that. Terrifying, perhaps the best horror series I've ever seen. I'm in episode 6 |
Thalassic
09.21.19 | I'm only on episode 3 now, but it's creepy af |
TheNotrap
09.21.19 | That old Marianne lady is scary as hell. Prepare yourself as it will get better and better. |
budgie
09.21.19 | are there lots of outside shots? i just saw the trailer and it had me extremely excited because it looks like it was filmed in brittany |
TheNotrap
09.21.19 | It was filmed in northern France, but I don't know where. Yes, there are many outdoor scenes, by the sea and by a lighthouse. Don't miss it, the series is excellent and really scary. |
budgie
09.21.19 | awesome... yeah looked up an article, the outdoor scenes were filmed in brittany. i'm super excited now! |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.21.19 | going to it chapter 2 tonight, hope its ok |
TheNotrap
09.21.19 | Just saw it. 6/10 |
alamo
09.22.19 | it 2 sucks |
budgie
09.22.19 | thx |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.22.19 | Bummer I didnt see it afterall anyways lol |
alamo
09.22.19 | just tried to watch first ep of new american horror story..,..... shite |
budgie
09.22.19 | thx |
alamo
09.22.19 | you're welcome
damn i was stoked for brunette emma roberts |
budgie
09.22.19 | i need to fuck emma roberts |
Uzumaki
09.23.19 | Keeping in tone with the nature of this list, I'm with you in spirit on that, budgie. |
butt.
09.23.19 | Was AHS actually bad? I slightly had hopes that it would be better this time. Of course, I always do this and then always get disappointed |
alamo
09.23.19 | i only made through half the episode but yeah, production looks like a telenovela, awful dialogues, everything is a 80s horror cliche but just for the sake of being, in a very bland way imo
"Of course, I always do this and then always get disappointed"
me. damn those fun teasers |
budgie
09.27.19 | hd torrents for midsommar and crawl are finally out
jesus about time |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.27.19 | I thought crawl looked so stupid |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.27.19 | Was more interested in that emma Roberts movie that they got bullied into cancelling |
budgie
09.27.19 | what film was that?
crawl just looks like cheesy creature feature guilty pleasure type movie. and piranha 3d was awesome so |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.28.19 | It was called The Hunt. The producers got bullied into cancelling it by the same crowd that is currently throwing a temper tantrum about Joker |
budgie
09.28.19 | what crowd is that? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.28.19 | People that think they need to police art so that white "incels" dont get any smart ideas and do a terrorism |
budgie
09.28.19 | i'm tryin to find some decent sites which discuss it but man the internet is miserable
seems like the studio pulled it to play it safe after some mass shootings, not necessarily that a bunch of people were whining about the film to be cancelled |
budgie
09.28.19 | "The studio’s decision to cancel its release came after 31 people were killed in two mass shootings last weekend.
The first happened on Saturday at a crowded Walmart in El Paso, where a man armed with an AK-style rifle gunned down 22 people. Early on Sunday morning, nine people died when a gunman opened fire on a crowd gathered on the sidewalk of a busy entertainment district in Dayton.
On Friday, President Trump alluded to “The Hunt” on Twitter without specifically naming it. He said it was made “in order to inflame and cause chaos.”
“Liberal Hollywood is Racist at the highest level, and with great Anger and Hate!” he wrote. “They like to call themselves ‘Elite,’ but they are not Elite.”"
probably they couch the movie until people forget about mass shootings for a while and then drop it when it will be more profitable? didn't that happen with the interview |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.28.19 | People were sending them death threats over the movie because of all the recent shootings and eventually the studio and producers caved and shelved it |
budgie
09.28.19 | "Hunt, directed by Craig Zobel, chronicles a dozen "deplorables" trying to outlast a group of private jet-flying "elites" bent on killing their anti-choice, gun-loving targets. Following a THR story earlier that day on the altering of the film's marketing plan in the wake of a trio of mass shootings, Universal executives and the filmmakers began receiving death threats via email and on social media and immediately paused the campaign altogether.
Sources say the studio's internal security force became involved, but outside law enforcement was not alerted. It appears that Universal did not foresee the maelstrom to come, including round-the-clock Fox News segments and tweets by President Trump seemingly directed at the title."
"Sources say the studio leadership was reluctant to cave to the outrage of those who have not seen the finished film. But the mass shootings changed the calculus, rendering what studio sources believe was a biting satire into a project so toxic, it wasn't worth the headaches. Blum is said to have been on board with the decision to scrap it for now and move forward."
what a fuckin trip
emma roberts horror movie just wasted :((((((((( |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.28.19 | Totally. I wonder if they pulled all the trailers down too. It honestly looked like great fun.
Have u seen that Perfection netflix horror? |
budgie
09.28.19 | yeah i thought it was a pile of shit lol. idk if i posted here but i watched haunt last week and really enjoyed it, for like, low budget popcorn horror |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.28.19 | Word, was seeing articles about people finding it super gross so I was curious about it. Will avoid! |
budgie
09.28.19 | there's like a quick scene where someone pukes up bugs that's about all the gross in it. the first act is pretty cool but the last act is one of the most atrociously awful things i've ever seen. probably still worth seeing because the two leads have a lesbian sex scene and that one girl is stunning |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.28.19 | Why people freaking out about puking up bugs whatever |
budgie
09.28.19 | i doubt people actually are. just articles being written after every horror movie comes out "scariest horror movie of all time!" "people fainted in theater!" "grosses horror movie ever released!" |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.28.19 | i mean yeah but i was reading rotten tomato reviews about it and people seemed to almost unanimously call it gross in one way or another |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.28.19 | thy seemed to agree on that a lot more than they could agree on whether or not it was complete trash or really good |
budgie
09.28.19 | ah well guess they dont like seeing ppl puke up bugs. pusssies |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.28.19 | agreed what.evvvurrrr |
budgie
09.29.19 | am currently watching midsommar |
budgie
09.29.19 | damn the suicide murder scene was chilling |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.29.19 | Duuuude. So excited to hear your thoughts |
budgie
09.29.19 | this director really likes having his actors cry in his movies huh
so much crying |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.29.19 | That is a true fact |
tectactoe
09.29.19 | I am trying to decide whether Ari Aster or Jordan Peele is the most overrated director currently working. I guess Chris Nolan and Denis Villeneuve would be contenders as well. |
JeetJeet
09.29.19 | Nolan deserves that title. Denis has earned his acclaim. |
budgie
09.29.19 | "overrated director currently working" in horror the answer is definitely james wan. jordan peele totally flopped with "Us" though. i think hereditary is overrated but is still a solid flick, whereas wan's films are pretty much all trash except for maybe just the first saw film. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.29.19 | Yeah |
budgie
09.29.19 | pots i was enjoying hereditary quite a bit, was enthralling
the ending just made me sick to my stomach though idk
definitely an effective horror film to me with a solid story
i do prefer the wickerman though |
tectactoe
09.29.19 | But nobody is praising Wan for being an uber-intelligent (horror) director. Most of his films have piss poor ratings from audiences and critics alike, aside from a small vocal minority of vulgar auteurists. Nolan, Villeneuve, Peele, and Aster have all received widespread acclaim (more so from critics than audiences, but in some cases both)—in my opinion, undeservedly so. Nolan and Denis each have a single great film. Peele and Aster don’t even have that (granted their filmography is much smaller). |

09.29.19 | Watched The House with Laughing Walls after hearing it was an underrated giallo classic, and I was totally sold following the really intense opening. ...And then it was a slow bag of piss until the climax. They did the love interest so goddamn dirty it basically ruined the whole thing for me
I followed it up with All the Colors of the Dark, and hoo boy, THAT is how I want my gialli: hyperstylized, dizzying, and jammed the hell out. Rosemary’s Baby on mescaline, yeahhhhh~ |

tectactoe
09.30.19 | Aster makes obnoxiously self-conscious, ham-fisted movies for people who put too much stock into shock value and visual photography, feigning depth with lazy ambiguity and inconsistent metaphors. But it looks so pretty! And it was soooo disturbing! Lol. He tries way to hard to be some mini-LVT provocateur/auteur, straining himself over inane subtext to produce art school drivel. |
Trundle
09.30.19 | finally watched midsommar, it did not disappoint |
budgie
09.30.19 | trundle how did you feel about the ending? i looked up discussions and it seems most people felt the ending was cathartic, and they sympathized with dani and the pagan cult. which was the exact opposite. the ending wasn't cathartic for me at all, it was haunting and left me feeling distraught |
Trundle
09.30.19 | ya, idk how to feel about it, i'm so not down with sympathizing with the cult. those fuckers were creepy as hell. but, i did kinda wanna see her boyfriend die as well, and i guess now Dani has a new "family" so i guess it works on that level.
but ya i kinda would have rather seen her escape somehow.
i mean both kinds of endings have been done before so many times that they're both cliche in a way, so idk i think the ending was pretty good, but ya, I would be curious to see how it would have played out had they gone the other way.
still better than pretty much most horror movies, |
Rev
09.30.19 | three hour cut of midsommar slaps |
tectactoe
09.30.19 | I realize my comment sounds reductive toward people who enjoy his films and I didn't mean for it to be that way. There's nothing worse than someone who tries to categorize any for of art as objective. My apologies for sounding like a pompous cock, I just don't personally find Aster or Peele's work of much value beyond a well decorated surface texture. |
butt.
09.30.19 | of all modern horror directors, Aster is the one of the most unique and clearly puts lots of thought and time into everything he does. Idk how much of it you caught, but Hereditary was jam-packed with foreshadowing, metaphors, symbolic imagery, and easter eggs. His style is very distinct and I welcome his enthusiasm for making art and not just commercially successful loaded diapers. |
tectactoe
09.30.19 | I've seen it twice now and both times thought it was a fine horror film with a few moments of genuine suspense, a whole lot of nose-thumbing, and a piss-weak ending. Foreshadowing and symbolism is no longer a novel idea, simply hinting at what's to come later-on by placing recurring symbols and signposts in your film isn't particularly intelligent in and of itself. People more and more tend to place too much stock into photography and shock value, something Aster has plenty of, which explains the underground success his two films have achieved so far. But a lot of it is empty gesticulation, he's not doing anything particularly new or groundbreaking, he's simply got a decent eye and knows what makes people squirm. Sometimes that's enough for a horror film, but his two attempts are too ostentatious for me to really embrace as anything other than self-conscious wankery. I didn't "hate" either of them, but I don't find them anything above painfully average, bloated with half-baked subtext and inconsistent logic. One thing I'll give him credit for is getting a good performance out of his leading female. Collette and Pugh killed it.
UNFRIENDED: DARK WEB is a horror film that came out the same year as HEREDITARY and was severely overshadowed, and it's one of the most audacious films from a conceptual/execution standpoint since maybe THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT from 1999 (barring the original UNFRIENDED, which shared the same conceit but squandered it with a bullshit supernatural narrative).
I also mentioned IT COMES AT NIGHT which is one of the best horrors to come out in the last few years, one that seems to upset people because it doesn't have a clear-cut answer for everything, but it uses it's ambiguity to superlative effect, essentially placing the audience in the headspace of its main character: He is unsure of what's happening around him *and so are we*, and like him, we're only able to use context clues and intuition to draw conclusions. |
Winesburgohio
09.30.19 | counterpoint: Midsommar is good. thanks. |
tectactoe
09.30.19 | Either way, I tend to gravitate more towards films that aren't ostensibly "horror" films but manage to function through a horrifying register anyway, because they seem less concerned with signposting their scare tactics and are content with simply letting the horror "happen" (mostly because they have other things to focus on).
Recent films that wouldn't be traditionally classified as outright "horror" yet are way more "horrific" than e.g. either of Peele or Aster's films, *in my opinion* (for some reason I feel like that qualifier is necessary now) would be:
BURNING (Lee, 2018); MOTHER! (Aronofsky, 2017); THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER (Lanthimos, 2017); BONE TOMAHAWK (Zahler, 2015); COHERENCE (Byrkit, 2013); ENEMY (Villeneuve, 2013); UNDER THE SKIN (Glazer, 2013); BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO (Strickland, 2012); WINTER'S BONE (Granik, 2010), etc. |
tectactoe
09.30.19 | 'counterpoint: Midsommar is good. thanks.'
I'm honestly shocked you liked it, Wines. (Don't mean that pejoratively, I just wouldn't peg you as a fan based on what I know about your other tastes.) |
budgie
09.30.19 | my problem with midsommar and hereditary are, i think, while i absolutely think they are very good films, i don't really like either of them. i had a good time watching them, the stories were strong, the endings were strong, but i just don't like the films. my suspicion is: in neither of the films was there a single character who i cared about. to loosely compare hereditary to the exorcist (or, someone said it was similar to rosemary's baby): in the exorcist i cared about regan contre pazuzu and i cared about the father guy whose name i can't remember, and i cared deeply about rosemary; in hereditary i gave a fuck about no one, maybe the father i didn't outright dislike. and in midsommar compared to the wickerman (or even rosemary's baby, i felt like midsommar was more similar to rosemary's baby than hereditary, or maybe that "eventually accepting the devil" is just a story element this director likes to use), i really sympathized with the islanders, and slightly with the intruding mainlander cop fellow, whereas in midsommar, i sympathized with absolutely none of the slaughtered sheep (i thought the black was likeable but everyone else was miserable), and i hated every individual in the cult.
so yeah this director needs to write some characters i care about otherwise it's just a film about horrible thing happening to dispensable peeps |
budgie
09.30.19 | "UNFRIENDED: DARK WEB is a horror film that came out the same year as HEREDITARY and was severely overshadowed, and it's one of the most audacious films from a conceptual/execution standpoint since maybe THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT from 1999 (barring the original UNFRIENDED, which shared the same conceit but squandered it with a bullshit supernatural narrative). i've seen all the social-media horror films i think and they all are a blur to me because none stood out. but i think it was you who mentioned that film (dark web) because i re-downloaded it to re-check but idk, we will see. megan's missing stood out, actually, that film was ROUGH. |
tectactoe
09.30.19 | Forewarning: As much as I champion the film, even I can't deny the occasionally cringe acting in DARK WEB. And there's one glaring element of the film that I absolutely cannot stand (don't want to say to much, but it involves 'scrambling'). But what sets it apart from other horror films - even other social media-centric horror films - is the formalism/conceit. The entire film, in essence, unfolds on a computer screen. Not only is this unprecedented (aside from, like I said, the original UNFRIENDED, which carried the same structure but had a goofy narrative that ruined it) but it creates an augmented sense of hyper-realism, like a BLAIR WITCH PROJECT for the new, technology-obsessed era. Not to mention, coming up with enough gimmicks and tricks to employ on a Macbook without boring the audience over the course of 90 minutes is a more difficult task than people probably realize.
I think it gets dismissed because of the non-actors and, at the outset, it seems like a schmaltzy, b-rate, run-of-the-mill teen horror, but it's a lot smarter than that underneath. And sure, much of the technological prowess is embellished and/or stretched beyond existing limitations, but the idea that all of this """""could happen""""" and, even more so, to completely innocent people, is chilling enough for me. |

tectactoe
09.30.19 | budgie, I haven't seen THE DEN or MEGAN IS MISSING but even if you consider a film shot from the perspective of a "webcam", that's just a camera with a fixed position and lower quality. My point is that DARK WEB's perspective is that of an actual laptop screen. It has windows that contain feeds from other cameras, but the film itself unfolds as though you were staring at a Macbook screen essentially the entire time, task bar and desktop icons etc. visible except when a specific window is maximized momentarily.
Considering the first time I saw this was a ripped copy, *on my Macbook*, that drastically added to the immersion. More so than I would expect it to. |

Yeah the long tracking shot past her dead body to the computer screen followed by the same shot going past the girl crying, and out the window into the snowy night while the tribal drums and violins are going off. Fuck that was so good. Am watching the director’s cut rn.
Also finally watched Climax and Enter The Void recently which were excellent for the most part. Need to rewatch Irreversible soon because it’s been nearly a decade and I barely remember it. |

10.02.19 | Never saw The Void, is it good. Enter The Void is like a bizarre first-person out-of-body experience type movie. 10.02.19 | lol i skimmed thru noes 'love' the other week looked eggggh. mentioned it before but 'angst' is pretty solid and a huge influence on noes style, i stand alone and irreversible in particular. saw kill list and the childsplay remake the other day annnd; kill list was awesome for its lowbudget scale but not scary, the script/acting feels like oldschool exploitation but the new tech gives it sleak look. childs play got rid of the voodoo but the script was even more implausible than doriff movies, probably the best visually/acting wise yeet the writing didn't warrent the effort imo, it made me wanna give bride of chucky a rewatch. worth a try for fans of the series buuut i doubt it'll have any lasting impact on the franchises future. im tryna rent the jacobs ladder remake with a 3.9 on imdb, if anyone here hasnt seen jacobs ladder it's pretty good, an influence on silent hill |

The Blackcoat’s Daughter is definitely number one. The whole vibe, sense of isolation and dread that was captured is just unparalleled. Stunning work. Such a scary ass movie, straight up. |

10.02.19 | Art you see Blackcoat’s Daughter yet?
As far as Jacob’s Ladder goes, I’d say the exact opposite! The fact that it’s in his head and an internal struggle makes it even MORE terrifying. I mean, I was never really under the impression that the shit he was seeing throughout was real lol. |
budgie
10.02.19 | "Evil Dead remake, The Blackcoat’s Daughter, The Witch and The Autopsy of Jane Doe are probably top 4 of the past decade. " honestly can't argue with this list that much, they're all 4.5+/5 picks for me, with the blackcoat's daughter being maybe my all time favorite film. probably would squeeze scream 4 and banshee chapter up in there somewhere, though. and trollhunter. lake mungo just misses out from being 2008 release |
BAT
10.02.19 | i actually haven't seen hereditary or midsommar yet, miight rent the latter if its at a redbox. gasper noes a solid director and everything i've seen by him is interesting in its own way, the infamy of irreversible overshadows it's quality imo and i wouldn't really call him a shock artist, the average french-extreme flick outgraphics most of noes stuff but his work packs a lil more of a punch. scrolled thru that 'love' movie on pornhub annnd it honestly looked like boring arthouse porn. i've heard good things about climax but havent got a copy yet |
BAT
10.02.19 | also my problem with the jacobs ladder ending isnt the twist juuust the final crawl trying to have some biological warfare message when all the discussion of such warfare is just stuff inside the subconscious that the character couldn't know. honestly just a minor peeve but sticks out to me everytime |
artiswar
10.02.19 | No I haven't seen Blackcoat's Daughter but I'm adding it to the short-list.
I haven't seen Love, is it actually porn haha? Enter The Void has like a 10 minute pornographic sequence that is quite interesting, so I wouldn't be too surprised. I recommend that one and Climax for any cinephile worth their salt. And for god's sake BAT, watch Hereditary and Midsommar! |

10.04.19 | I don't like the matrix either but I loved upgrade. I was extra impressed because it's Leigh Whannell's directorial debut. He played Adam in Saw |

10.04.19 | yea there's no way I'd see something that long in theaters, plus chapter 1 was super underwhelming |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.04.19 | i liked chapter 1, even if mostly just for pennywise. i could watch skarsgaard talk and do weirdn creepy face shit as pennywise forever |

10.04.19 | yeah he delivers in pt 2. but it is helllla long
stoked for Joker |

10.04.19 | i fucking loved chapter 1, idk if i've even read any opinions of chapter 2 yet other than my buddy who's not a horror fan. he said it was meh or something |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.04.19 | yeah im probably just gonna wait for it on netflix at this point.

Chortles
10.04.19 | It Chapter 2 is honestly one of the worst things I've seen in a long time, and I actually liked the first chapter. it just felt so cynical and overlong and completely lacking any of the charm that the previous film had. they totally fucked it. wait for it to stream then put it on while you're cooking or something tbh |

Thalassic
10.05.19 | I saw Noroi: The Curse last night. Definitely recommended. It's a Japanese found footage flick but the story is reasonably complex and as a whole it's highly atmospheric. I wasn't outright terrified while watching it, but there's a feeling of dread still lingering on after watching it. |

10.06.19 | @Thalassic Noroi sounds really cool, I’m adding it to the list.
I binged a bunch of horror recently.
Ghostland - Not as brilliant/brutal as Martyrs but way better than The Tall Man, Pascal Laugier’s latest film is a welcome return to form. The doll-room scene was scary as hell.
The Perfection - Uhh, that was a movie. Not sure if it was good or terrible, but it was an experience… Don’t watch a trailer, just watch the film.
Last Shift - Solid ghost-story with some disturbing imagery but too many jump-scares and nothing too groundbreaking.
A Dark Song - solid slow-burn spin on the haunted house genre with an art-house twist.
The Void - awesome practical effects, got some very pleasant The Thing vibes but the story/characters were pretty annoying. |
budgie
10.06.19 | a dark song was fuckin awesoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooome
ghostland was almost sweet, have you ever read the short story celephais from lovecraft? was so similar but they threw it away at the end
|
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | the void was interesting all right lmao |
Egarran
10.06.19 | The Void is a classic 3/5 movie. |

10.06.19 | pretty much |

10.06.19 | if they ended the story where she wakes up at the party as her adult self and decided to stay with the fake fantasy life, that would have been awesome. |
budgie
10.06.19 | the ending of the perfection was retardo bizarro. wtf was that shit? who wrote that? i can only picture some 13 year old writing down "and then they team up out of nowhere and a rap track starts playing and they KICK his ass!!" |
budgie
10.06.19 | poot have you seen a dark song? |
artiswar
10.06.19 | *spoiler for The Perfection* she was trying to team up with her the whole time, she had to do something very drastic because the other girl was getting brainwashed by the cult and would never leave willingly. The jealous rival angle at the beginning was a complete misdirect, and the final image of them playing cello to the human-potato was pretty sweet. |

10.07.19 | there's 2 hyper-technical group dance sequences in the first 30 minutes of Climax, shit is wild... and that's BEFORE the hallucinogens kick in. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.07.19 | Colour me intrigued |
Gyromania
10.07.19 | Currently watching Marianne. Seems decent so far. The scene in the living room with her friend on the phone to what she thought was a first responder was actually a great scare. |
Gyromania
10.07.19 | Anyone else checking out Marianne as well? Does it stay good throughout? Hill House was my fixation last year but it after episode 4 or 5 it really went to shit. Hoping this show doesn't |

10.07.19 | Marianne is more interesting, in my opinion |

10.08.19 | What?! Hill House was amazing from front to back! If you didn’t even finish it, you’re doing yourself a huge disservice. One of my favorite shows. |
Larkinhill
10.08.19 | Yeah, Midsommar is fantastic.
Og suspiria is overrated, remake underrated
I agree with this, though I still really like the OG Suspiria. But I don’t think it’s some masterpiece or anything. And the remake is great. Very underrated yes. |
Gyromania
10.08.19 | Loved the Suspiria remake.
Hill House had amazing atmosphere and scares and then took a nosedive in the 2nd half. They completely eliminated the fear and atmosphere and made it about their ability to triumph over evil and I found it got kind of cheesy and far less scary as it went. One of those things that's better shrouded in mystery imo. |
budgie
10.08.19 | and the directing style where every piece of dialogue was a monologue got pretty grating |
Larkinhill
10.08.19 | You’re both wrong. You DO know that, don’t you? |
budgie
10.08.19 | i mean i enjoyed all the episodes for the most part. but i don't think it was perfect. carla gugino was, though |
Gyromania
10.08.19 | yeah the monologuing was taxing. every time somebody went to speak it was this long drawn out story. reminded me of the really long character ramblings that a show like breaking bad had, except without the depth or nuance. also thought the head demoness (or w.e she was) was really underwhelming and not at all scary. |
unclereich

10.08.19 | 'Tectatoe you have the worst opinions I've ever seen'
Likely seems that way due to your comparatively pigeonholed exposure to movies. Apologies for not joining into the massive Aster-Peele faux-arty circle jerk happening here.
Maybe....get better taste? I dunno. |
budgie
10.08.19 | gentlemen, gentlemen, please, this is a place of friendship |

10.08.19 | southbound is hit or miss. a couple decent segments, a couple bad ones. the first one has some extremely embarrassing CGI |

Lord(e)Po)))ts

10.08.19 | i like plenty of things that have decent/good reception, Ari Aster is just an ass director lmao. nice try, though! some people simply can't handle differentiating opinions that go below surface level pleasures. big oof.
(and your 'argument' is weak, anyway, given that e.g. Midsommar doesn't even have a decent reception as far as online/aggregate scores are concerned...so...??? try again?) |
artiswar
10.08.19 | uhh, gonna need to see your math on that one |
butt.
10.08.19 | midsommar has 7.3 on imdb, 72 on metacritic, and 83% on RT.

neve campbell, right? |
butt.
10.08.19 | JLC bro... |
tectactoe
10.08.19 | 'midsommar has 7.3 on imdb'
i thought it was lower than this, but i should've known...the A24 rimming is worse than ever. even still, the point stands: i like plenty of movies with much higher ratings and plenty with much lower ratings. my tastes correlate neither negatively nor positively with general or critical consensus because i am a sentient being who forms my own opinion. so essentially we've got someone making widespread claims based on relatively few data points simply because some other person on the internet's taste doesn't align with theirs. what is this, 2004? lmao. sad. |
butt.
10.08.19 | most of my fav horror movies are in the 6-7 range anyway so it's kind of irrelevant. I mean Dark Web has a 5.9 after all, since we're comparing |
budgie
10.08.19 | i think blackcoats daughter is 4.something on imdb so it all means shit to me |
butt.
10.08.19 | 5.9, but yeah |
butt.
10.08.19 | the one i dont understand is Honeymoon at a 5.7
that movie is so good wtf |
budgie
10.08.19 | i def saw it at 4 something at some point
honeymoon i love to death but i would understand general audiences not liking it b/c of the well i can't really discuss it spoilers |
tectactoe
10.08.19 | 'I mean Dark Web has a 5.9 after all, since we're comparing'
right, that's his point, he thinks i'm professing my love for it simply because it has a lower rating (and vice versa re my distaste for Midsommar) in some feign at being edgy or something, i dunno.
'so it all means shit to me'
precisely. that was kind of my overarching point, though i probably didn't make it clear enough.
and piggybacking on all of this, horror movies always seem to score lower, on the whole, than most other genres. a lot of that is because there are droves of absolute trash - horror films are some of the easiest to effectively make with a relatively low budget, not to mention all the people trying (and failing) to purposely re-create a specific level of schlock - and i think people kind of go into horror films with a bit of subconscious skepticism whether they realize it or not. horror films are also susceptible to some of the most retarded characters and plot contrivances in history, too, so that's not doing the genre any favors. |
tectactoe
10.08.19 | i know at one time mother! was a 5.9, shortly after release. it's back up to 6.6 which is good but imo still too low. that's still the best film i saw in 2017. |
budgie
10.08.19 | oh i started mother the other night but lawrence fuckin is hard to handle
should i soldier thru it |
butt.
10.08.19 | mother is fantastic |
Larkinhill
10.08.19 | Looked up Apostle and it sounds fantastic. Love cult-y stuff, love the two lead actors, love the director.
Is it streaming on Netflix? If not, where are you all watching it? |
tectactoe
10.08.19 | i hate jennifer lawrence, too, but i actually think she's pretty great in that movie. (her two career highlights are that and 'Winter's Bone' from 2010.) the movie itself is awesome though. it's like a slowly tightening tension rod that just snaps in the final thirty minutes into pure mayhem. some people balk at the religious text but i think that's kind of a smokescreen from Aronofsky. there's something else being said about the creative process of an artist. either way, it's so good from a superficial level that subtext doesn't matter much here. |
unclereich
10.08.19 | anything over a 6 for a horror movie is really solid by imdb standards |
Larkinhill
10.08.19 | And yeah, mother is definitely worth your time. |

10.08.19 | "anything over a 6 for a horror movie is really solid by imdb standards"

10.08.19 | Overlord was pretty cool too even tho it had a couple flaws |
budgie
10.08.19 | "Haven't watched Southbound yet. Any good?" probably the best anthology out there this century so far except maybe trick'r'treat if you consider that an anthology. one of the segments alone makes it a must watch
i didn't really like annihilation very much nor do i consider it a horror movie |

10.08.19 | Agreed on Annihilation. Great movie. The end was trippy as shit and the bear scene was insanely intense. |
artiswar
10.09.19 | Annihilation was pretty uneven but the bear scene was fucking unnerving and the ending was like a full-on Tool video. |
Egarran
10.09.19 | Annoying reader here: Annihilation is the first book in the Southern Reach trilogy and it is a very good little book, worth reading - BUT the two next are TERRIBLE.

JeetJeet
10.09.19 | "anyone seen piercing? trailer looked trippy, im curious about it"
Yup. Saw it months ago. Had very high hopes for it. Shit ended up being trash. Aesthetically its awesome but its such an incoherent mess of a movie. |
JeetJeet
10.09.19 | Also saw It Chapter 2 today and I didn't hate it. In fact I'm curious as to why so many people dislike it, cus it really just felt like a longer version of the 2017 movie. Also Skaarsgawd absolutely killed it as Pennywise. |
artiswar
10.09.19 | budgie I haven't heard of like 85% of those. And I haven't seen IT 2 and I don't plan to, the first one was garbage. I have no doubt this new one is trash as well. Just read the fucking novel, it's god-tier King and can't really be adapted. |
budgie
10.09.19 | dude i already want to rewatch it 2 even though it's nearly 3 hrs long. fuckin bill hader dude! |

10.09.19 | Gonna finally watch Lake Mungo soon, just waiting for the mockumentary mood to strike. |

10.09.19 | aw yeeeeah hope you fall in the camp that loves the film
cause it has plenty of haters (booo) |
artiswar
10.09.19 | yeah arthouse horror tends to be really divisive, and I can see why. I fucking loved your rec The Blackcoat's Daughter though, so I have a feeling I'll like Lake Mungo. |
budgie
10.09.19 | hmmm i don't think it's right to call lake mungo arthouse. check it & get back to me |
Larkinhill
10.10.19 | You mofos have seen Don’t Look Now, right? Classic 70s horror movie with Donald Sutherland. Set in Venice Italy and absolutely cloaked with atmosphere and dread. One of my all time favorites, but pretty underrated considering half the people I mention it to have never even heard of it (I swiftly cut these people out of my life). |
Larkinhill
10.10.19 | Also — It 2 wasn’t bad, but still pretty disappointing. I also fairly liked It 1 (bought on blu Ray), but it’s also disappointing. The reason? Neither are scary in the slightest. They’re entertaining as hell, well written, well acted...but they aren’t fucking scary! Considering the book is one of the most frightening books out there, the lack of scares aspect disappoints the hell out of me.
And Lake Mungo — it’s solid. It’s no Blackcoat’s Daughter but it’s decent.
For anybody who hasn’t seen it, check out Eden Lake. |
budgie
10.10.19 | i think lake mungo is the greatest film ever made |

10.10.19 | Nah. But it’s damn good. Haven’t watched it in a minute. |

10.10.19 | IT 2 was good, overhated for sure and Bill Hader was absolutely perfect casting (anyone who hasn't seen Barry yet is slackin) |
BAT
10.10.19 | i actually haven't seen many of those besides like the blob, killer clowns, cemetary man, and night of the creeps. i wanna see murder party now cuz i finally saw the green room the other day, twas really good i like it. i've heard of dont look now for ages but never got around to it, iirc nicholas roegg made it, performance and roundabout(**walkabout) are pretty out there tho. also rewatched og suspiria and it still slaps, have the new one laying around buut the runtime is a lil daunting |
Larkinhill
10.10.19 | IT 2 was good, overhated for sure and Bill Hader was absolutely perfect casting (anyone who hasn't seen Barry yet is slackin)
Yeah Hader was fantastic. I’ve heard great things about Barry but haven’t watched yet (but I have HBO so I really have no excuse).
I wouldn’t say it was good, but it was alright. Worth seeing and entertaining but not particularly memorable. |

Yeah Don’t Look Now is Roeg. And it’s excellent.
Man, fuck Murder Party. It’s alright and all but — WATCH BLUE RUIN!!! Green Room is solid, but Blue Ruin is a masterpiece. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen. |
Larkinhill
10.10.19 | Did anybody see Ready Or Not? Damn good movie. |
Gyromania
10.10.19 | Marianne ended up being pretty w.e. Another Netflix show that starts out with the best intentions and some cool setups and ends up falling miles behind in its second half |
Gyromania
10.10.19 | Also I find the It movies scarier than the book. The book is pretentious af imo but then I've always found King to be a boring writer. |

10.10.19 | i've only read thru the shinning but id describe his style as 'pageturners', generally very straightforward kinda like reading a newspaper article. i liked the movie better |
Egarran
10.10.19 | I've read Cujo and Desperation. 5/10 books.
Oh and the Shawshank story, before it was cool. |
butt.
10.10.19 | @budgie the original house on sorority row is so damn good! Super underrated slasher. Also planning on re-watching Night of the Creeps sometime this week.
Last night I watched The Halloween Tree and before work this morning I did some Goosebumps thanks to Netflix lolol
|
unclereich
10.10.19 | goosebumps did not age well lol |

10.10.19 | fuck right off! it was made for kids so obviously there was no budget. The 90s charm is totally there for me, especially both Haunted Mask episodes. |

Marianne started off with an 8/10 first episode, but gradually ended up with an overall 4/10. |

10.10.19 | yeah dude, but the fucker is like $70 on bluray. I've only seen a handful of episodes but they were pretty good |
Larkinhill
10.10.19 | I stayed up many a late nights as a wee one, binging Crypt on HBO and Darkside. Was especially obsessed with Crypt. HBO would sometimes show a bunch of eps late at night and my god, did my kid self get excited lol.
Yeah I’m with butt on Goosebumps. It’s cheesy, but I can still definitely watch and enjoy them (my daughter watched all the episodes on Netflix a few years ago). |
Eons
10.10.19 | avoid lame mainstream movies and watch more abstract creepy films like Eraserhead |
Eons
10.10.19 | eraserhead might not immediately scare you but you won't forget the movie after watching it. The vibe that David Lynch captures in the film is menacing and it's always present. Even during simple dinner scenes, there's this menacing music playing and you always feel that something bad is going to happen but it's not predictable. It creates anxiety. Very interesting film. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.10.19 | Eraserhead is great sure but there is a space for easy-viewing. Not everything needs to be surreal, draining to fill your life with one type of energy. |
butt.
10.10.19 | Sorry I thought Eraserhead was dumb as shit. I mean I somewhat enjoyed it, but Lynch was definitely just stroking himself and make weirdness for the sake of weirdness just to be "artsy". If you trimmed the fat, that movie could easily be 30 mins long. Maybe I'll give it another watch in a couple years and see if I feel any differently |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.10.19 | Sometimes you just want something light and less demanding |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.10.19 | Calling lynch stuff weirdness for the sake of being weird is bewilderingly off-base |
budgie
10.10.19 | i'd rather watch killer klowns from outerspace than eraserhead anyday |
butt.
10.10.19 | and basically what pots said. I like old abstract movies like Haxan (1922), and I like generic 80s slashers. There's a place for everything. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.10.19 | That movie is his most personal work and it's all about his fears of being a father, the last thing it is is "weird just for the sake of it" |
Eons
10.10.19 | not me, i get extremely bored with films unless they're interesting or abstract. there's far too many ''teenagers lost in the woods'' films out there and to criticize abstract films seem bizarre to me. |
Eons
10.10.19 | the only good teenagers lost in the woods film is the Evil Dead films. |

10.10.19 | actually yeah i prefer reading comic books to watching the films. Or I'll watch the old Cartoons like x men, spiderman, etc. I find the movies made based on those were shite. |

10.10.19 | yea it really was a brilliant show for the time, I haven't seen it since it last aired but im sure it still holds up. I think I saw every episode in order as a kid growing up, every Tuesday night I think lol |

10.10.19 | i loved the tv show when i was in middle school. haven't seen it since then but i do have some recollections of some episodes which stood out, maybe. one at the zoo, and one with creepy floating guys who knock on doors and stole voices or something. been too long!! |
Trifolium
10.10.19 | So much weird shit happened in just those first few episodes that I can only imagine where they're going with this. I mean, a cheerleader burst into flames during audition and the crowd didn't even care! What the hell!!!

10.10.19 | "Marianne started off with an 8/10 first episode, but gradually ended up with an overall 4/10."
Agreed. When they first got to her hometown I was like "look at the design of this place, with that lighthouse in the background" looked like the perfect location. Really great cinematography in the former half too. It just blows my mind how these showrunners make such an awesome foundation and then completely shit the bed by the midway point. They added too much "humour" to it and the ending was just totally cliche and unsatisfying. Earlier in the season when her friend takes that call in the house and it ends up being Marianne standing in the corner was a legitimate scare. O thought they were going to stick by that supernatural formula to create some good scares. |
