SlothcoreSam
08.01.19 | Great list
Sage was number 1 between 1999-2008, but kinda lost his way a bit.
Also you are missing B.Dolan and Seth Sentry. |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | SlothcoreSam Thanks man, yea Sage was at his best there, he's still one of the best but his early stuff was amazing. To be completely honest I really need to hear more B. Dolan and I haven't even heard Seth Sentry before but will look into him.

08.01.19 | TILEHER I feel like Nas has been consistent lyrically to be considered one of the best, wouldn't only consider what he was post 2010. Logic, Cole and Chance The Rapper really aren't people I'd personally consider here. |
naughtcturnal
08.01.19 | Im no connoisseur but I'd have to go with GZA, MF Doom, Earl Sweatshirt and Andre 3000 |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | TILEHER
I seen some cold nights and bloody days
They grab me and bullets spray
They use me wrong so I sing this song 'til this day
My body is cold steel for real
I was made to kill, that's why they keep me concealed
Under car seats they sneak me in clubs
Been in the hands of mad thugs
They feed me when they load me with mad slugs
Seventeen precisely, one in my head
They call me Desert Eagle, semi-auto with lead
I'm seven inches four pounds, been through so many towns
Ohio to Little Rock to Canarsie, living harshly
Beat up and battered they pull me out
I watch as niggas scattered, making me kill
But what I feel it never mattered
When I'm empty I'm quiet, finding myself fiending to be fired
A broken safety, niggas place me in shelves
Under beds so I beg for my next owner to be a thoroughbred
Keeping me full up with hollow heads |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | naughtcturnal GZA, DOOM and 3k are among the best of the best, Earl isn't quite there yet IMO, he is one of the best nowadays though. |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | TILEHER That wokeness is great and important but doesn't automatically mean his stuff before 2010 wasn't as lyrical if anything most people would say he was better in the 90s. Logic is good but just doesn't amaze me on a level as high as someone like Nas, I do need to hear more from him though. |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | Were those your own lyrics lol? |
SlothcoreSam
08.01.19 | Check Seth Sentry's album- This Was Tomorrow.
https://youtu.be/O0QfxssT_NU
Another underrated rapper.
Scroobius Pip. Check out introduction
https://youtu.be/q_Gh8TWpQE8
|
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | Oh shit my bad a little bit of it rhymed literally thought you were writing rhymes, how much of the more classic Hip Hop have you actually heard though? |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | SlothcoreSam I'll check This Was Tomorrow and listen to Scroobius Pip as well, just looked both of them up and they seem right up my alley. |
ConcubinaryCode
08.01.19 | All I got from this is that Nas is an anti vaccer lol |
SlothcoreSam
08.01.19 | Cool, they are both a little dated, but still fun listens.
Just going to add some females, list is very male heavy.
Kate Tempest - Everybody Down. More of a poet, spoken word artist, but she does have music over the top of her stuff. I'd put her at the top of this list if we were talking poetry.
Yugen Blakrok - Anima Mysterium. Her first 2 albums are straight up fire.
Missy Elliot
M.I.A.
Sampa the Great
Lizzo
Others as well, I'll add later. |
ReiniEden
08.01.19 | You have my respect for including Eyedea on this list, even more respect for being in the Top Ten. |
naughtcturnal
08.01.19 | Cupcakke |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | TILEHER don't get me wrong I love a lot of modern Hip Hop but I don't like the whole the new eras better then the old logic, there is a lot of stuff from the 90s that is diverse in sound, mainly underground shit.
|
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | ConcubinaryCode lol |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | ReiniEden Oh shit yea, I've been a longtime Eyedea fan, good to see another one. His lyricism is so dense and complex, he was a master with concepts and just lyrically better then almost all. |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | TILEHER the Memphis and Detroit scenes are very overlooked but I've noticed some love for them here, there's much more to the 90s then what the masses think, I'll check that link soon. |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | SlothcoreSam yea I'm looking forward to them, oh yea Kate Tempest I haven't heard an album from her or anything but have heard a few tracks and shes great just need to hear more. Yugen Blakrok, Sampa the Great and Lizzo are a few i'm not familiar with but will look them up. Haven't heard much from M.I.A but like Missy Elliot. As far as great female MCs that I listen to Jean Grae, Bahamadia and Lauryn Hill would definitely make the list if I made it bigger.

08.01.19 | Mc ride> |
Avagantamos
08.01.19 | vast aire, vordul mega, lil ugly mane, and lord infamous would be high on my list |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | Avagantamos I'm a massive fan of all of them, the only thing is I haven't heard the solo material of Vast Aire or Vordul Mega so need to get to that because The Cold Vein might be the G.O.A.T album. Lil Ugly Mane is awesome, Travis Miller is just a great artist in general I don't know about him being one of the very best lyricists though. I need to hear the solo material of Lord Infamous. |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | FourthReich never considered Mc ride to be a great lyricist, his vocals probably do get in the way if he is though. |
combustion07
08.01.19 | Great list. A few here I need to check too for sure |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | combustion07, Thanks I hope you find some more artists you like. |
Sharkattack
08.01.19 | I honestly love rides lyrics. It’s like abstract poetry with some absurdism and it fucking rhymes most of the time. |
Hawks
08.01.19 | Bizzy Bone and Krayzie Bone need mentioned. |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | Sharkattack I'll need to give him more of a fair chance, just find him hard to get into. |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | Hawks I don't think of anyone from Bone as the best lyricists |
Deez
08.01.19 | Great list.
Needs Breeze Brewin hard though |
Drifter
08.01.19 | I think you should reconsider Bizzy and check some of his albums like Heaven'z Movie, The Gift and Alpha And Omega. He's probably the most emotional rapper I know of and just lets everything on his mind out. Amazing artist.
Where's 2Pac though bro?????? |
Drifter
08.01.19 | Also while he mostly keeps it gangsta, I think Kurupt needs an honorable mention cus he's probably the most lyrical in that style |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | deezer666 Thanks man, good call actually to be honest it was especially hard choosing the last two or so, several could have taken those places. |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | Drifter Actually I've heard most of the Bone albums but not his solo shit, you've made me interested in calling him the most emotional, I'll get to some of his solo shit at some point.
|
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | Drifter Oh Kurupt would still be high in the Top 100 |
Deez
08.01.19 | Cee lo Green never gets a shout either people forget how good he was because of his pop career
Talib should be here too and Billy Woods for me |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | Yea Cee lo is definitely pretty underrated for sure, Goodie Mob is amazing. Kweli could have almost been here, it was a toss up between him and Common. I've been getting into Billy Woods a lot lately he'd be number 50-something at the moment but could possibly go up the more I listen to him, he's definitely one of the very best right now. |
Drifter
08.01.19 | He might be kinda hard to get into but man listening to his albums is just so special. It feels like you know him personally. |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | Drifter I feel like I really liked Bone Thugs when I was much younger, most of there tracks don't do much for me anymore. I did love East 1999 when listening to it again lately though but there more mainstream shit isn't really my taste anymore, never considered giving Bizzys solo shit much of a chance but should change that. |
Drifter
08.01.19 | Yeah he's not super stand out in Bone but I love him solo |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | Yea I always liked Krayzie more but it's often the case that rappers in groups are a lot better solo. |
Drifter
08.01.19 | Bone is basically Krayzie featuring lol. Always does the hooks, always has a verse. I think Krayzie is able to stand out for this and he's def my fav when it comes to their music as a group |
GodLovesUgly
08.01.19 | Yea pretty much |
Drifter
08.02.19 | Wait so, cee lo was a rapper? Lol I never knew. I knew he was in goodie mob but always figured he was a singer.
I know him strictly for that forget you song lmao. Used to hear that and every other pop hit from 2010/2011/2012 on the bus to and from school. Fun times |
Deez
08.02.19 | Dude check his verse in this.....
https://youtu.be/44IEmLZ3L8Q
Comes in at like 2.28 |

08.02.19 | He’s still the most annoying thing ever |
deathofasalesman
08.02.19 | Incredible list as usual, GLU. I would also include Guru, Qwel, Pusha T, and Skyzoo. |
Deez
08.02.19 | He’s still the most annoying thing ever'
Not as an MC
Give a fuck about his pop shit I dont pay attention to that |
oltnabrick
08.02.19 | please say sike |
unclereich
08.02.19 | Idk that verse didn’t really alter my opinion |
GodLovesUgly
08.03.19 | Drifter listen to Goodie Mob - Soul Food it's one of the best albums ever, and if you've got time check Still Standing as well. Also have you not heard his verse on Outkast's Git Up, Git Out?, surprising if you haven't. |
GodLovesUgly
08.03.19 | deathofasalesman Thanks, glad you like it, Qwel is here though at #19. Guru would definitely still be high in the Top 100, Gang Starr and Wu is what originally got me serious about Hip Hop. I don't seem to think as highly of Pusha T and Skyzoo as most seem to, but I do still need to hear more from them and will make it a priority. |
GodLovesUgly
08.03.19 | deezer666 That Cee Lo verse is incredible. |
GodLovesUgly
08.03.19 | Would be interested in anyone's opinions that hasn't seen my Top 50 Hip Hop list https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=1062512&listid=188359 |
frigyourgenre
09.03.21 | Elzhi and killah priest are definitely slept on when it comes to all time mc's they are in my top 10 for sure |
Drifter
09.03.21 | Got half way through and was ready to say WHERE'S RUGGED MAN but you got him lol. Amazing list. Needs Woodie though |
Drifter
09.03.21 | OH this is an old list lmao oops. I didn't even know RA or Woodie at the time tho so my comment still stands |
GodLovesUgly
09.04.21 | Elzhi and Killah Priest are amazing and it's great to see that they're in your Top 10. Especially since I don't see it often, they're both top tier and well rounded lyricists for sure. |
GodLovesUgly
09.04.21 | Oh man R.A The Rugged Man is one of the G.O.A.T's so easily, literally the definition of pretty much a flawless MC. I have no idea who Woodie is to be completely honest, will have to do some research. |
MiloRuggles
09.04.21 | Nice old list, commenting to dig into ones I don't know later |
Drifter
09.04.21 | Oh man you gotta look into Woodie. Really tragic but interesting story. He only released an ep and an lp in his life but they're both some of the best hip hop I've ever heard.
The ep Yoc Influenced is in my top 5 rap albums of all time and the full length Demonz N My Sleep remastered is top 20 all time too. Really really amazing rapper from the bay area |
Drifter
09.04.21 | Some of his best known songs like Talez of a Killa and The Streets Are Callin' Me are perfect examples of his skills |
GodLovesUgly
09.04.21 | Cheers Milo, I hope you find some more rappers to listen to here. |
GodLovesUgly
09.04.21 | Drifter I will, sounds good to me especially since he hasn't got so much work, I'm sure I'll be able to listen to all of it no doubt. |
GodLovesUgly
09.04.21 | Just heard The Streets Are Callin' Me and like it a lot, what a track! |
