07.22.19 | I adore the book and enjoy the film, not sure what I feel about this though. |
Rowan5215
07.22.19 | looks fantastic. complete trust in Lindelof since The Leftovers, and you couldn't get much worse than the movie |
BigBlob
07.22.19 | will probably be politically correct nonsense |

07.22.19 | Granted I was high af when I saw the movie, but I never really got it. The acting was good and all, but couldn’t the sad blue dick guy just disassemble any bad guy that got in the way? |

07.22.19 | the film was god awful but Lindelof has earned my respect with The Leftovers. Might check. |

07.22.19 | I don't get the hate for the film, bar the sex scene.... I actually think I prefer the ending too lol |

07.22.19 | I really liked the film. Show looks to have promise, but I'm gonna be cautiously optimistic. |

07.22.19 | Directed by Zack Snyder = almost automatic fail. Actually a weird soundtrack considering the movie. |
Sevengill
07.22.19 | movie's of of my all time favorites. hopefully they don't muck this up. |
nol
07.22.19 | is the show out yet? probably gonna suck, since it's like a sequel and not a retelling of watchmen.
I liked the movie til I read the book and now I hate the movie |
DrGonzo1937
07.22.19 | It’s not a sequel; it’s set in a contemporary alternate universe. |
Devastator
07.22.19 | Is it not a sequel? Everything seems like it lines up as a sequel with Manhattan swinging his dick around on Mars and everything going on on Earth. |
Uzumaki
07.22.19 | I thought the film did a good enough adaptation of the graphic novel, bar a couple instances. |
Slex
07.22.19 | The film is obnoxiously overhated, it’s fantastic
Lindeloff and the cast along with this source material as inspiration? Easily my most anticipated show |
Rowan5215
07.23.19 | never seen a film so slavishly recreate every panel of it's source material while just utterly missing the point of why it was great. butchering of Rorschach despite his perfect casting was embarrassing |
Slex
07.23.19 | I don’t understand how, I’m an absolutely obsessive fan of the novel and while I’ll concede some weaknesses, Rorschach, Manhattan and Comedian were just perfect to me |
GhostB1rd
07.23.19 | This, His Dark Materials, Witcher, LOTR, GOT prequel, all the big hitters are going balls deep on the fantasy world building. |
Rowan5215
07.23.19 | Rorschach is supposed to be an obsessive creep who's full descent into insanity is one of the thematic thrusts and... Snyder made him someone to be idolised and respected and basically Batman |
Rowan5215
07.23.19 | very keen for a Second Age LOTR show I must say, so many possibilities |
nol
07.23.19 | One thing the movie flops on is the color palette of the GN, movie makes it 100% dark and brooding when the book is wonderfully pastel (though it still captures a dark atmosphere)
I just think the watchmen story was made to be consumed in comic book form. There’s a lot of 4th wall stuff that adds to the story and suspense, like how the panels are juxtaposed and the interludes between each chapter. |
dedex
07.23.19 | ^and the pirate comic book metaphor |

07.23.19 | ^yes |
Uzumaki
07.23.19 | Well, let's see how it does here, where they aren't constrained by one singular run time. I do concede points towards the qualms about the color palette and Rorschach, but IMO they were minor quibbles to me when I saw the film. Fucking loved the graphic novel though; a coworker had that in his locker along with a volume of Berserk, and it was like "what to read, what to read?..." |

07.23.19 | Book is great (though I’m not a fanatic), movie was meh decent, but I have a good feeling about the show since it’s HBO. Basically a stamp of quality. |

Maybe if you watch it again, it’ll reverse the first viewing and cancel it out, therefore erasing from memory. |

unimpeachable and objectively correct? you're making me blush acad, stop it
Leftovers has one of the best endings of any show lmao |
Winesburgohio
07.24.19 | i think the movie is pretty good although takes more time to watch than it takes to get thru the comic and features the most excruciatingly bad sex scene this side of The Room
Damon Lindelof is responsible for LOST and The Leftovers, two of my favourite shows probably ever, so i have complete confidence he can create magic with the material. And if you haven't watched the The Leftovers or gave up after the sloggier parts of the first season please reconsider: the final two are seriously just unbelievable |
GhostB1rd
07.24.19 | They're not. It builds so much intrigue but does not pay off. At all.

Also, H&CF S4 was shit. That phone call was one of the worst mutli-scene tragedies in television history. |
CaliggyJack
10.05.19 | Pretty hyped for it tbqh. Alan Moore's a self-righteous douchebag and I could give a fuck all what he says about this film. Watchmen on it's own is a great comic, but it has a lot of potential for prequels/sequels and the like. |
samwise2000
10.05.19 | Im interested to see how this is, but considering how the Watchmen movie felt like more of a visual adaption of the comic, lacking the substance that made the comic so enticing, my expectations arent very high. I also feel like Wactmen is already a complete story that was meant to stand on its own, so this feels like DC is milking the IP a bit (not that they didnt already with before watchmen). |
CaliggyJack
10.05.19 | The film is the greatest comic book movie ever made good sir |
samwise2000
10.05.19 | I feel like comics just arent the best medium for film adaption. Filmmakers try and stick too close to the source material and it can damper the experience. Some things that work in comics dont work in film, and thats whats great about both mediums, how they both can convey the same ideas in different ways. I love the visuals of the watchmen movie, but outside of that there is just something missing from it that I cant quite put my finger on atm. Totally respect your opinion tho! |
CaliggyJack
10.05.19 | I try to separate the two mediums, the adaptations get a lot better when I try to take my comic-nerd self out of it. |
Rowan5215
10.24.19 | first episode slapped ass exactly as I knew it would. so damn good |
dimsim3478
10.24.19 | yea it was pretty awesome. ugh cant wait to see more.
just a pet peeve but...not really sure if it links up well enuf with the comic to earn literally the exact same title. i know peteypedia is up but i read the rorschach memorandum one and the writing was fucking boring so dont care enuf to look at the rest. |
Rowan5215
10.24.19 | lol isn't it meant to be fucking boring writing? it's an in-office memo between cops, that's like the most boring thing of all time
I think Veidt being a main character and Rorschach being literally all over the series is more than enough justification personally, not to mention Manhattan hovering on the sidelines and Laurie coming in in future weeks - idk how that's not enough links to the comic for ya, lol. if you're waiting for Dreiberg to show up imma just say I think Lindelof is smart enough to realise Dreiberg is the most boring fucking milquetoast ass boring character in anything ever and has rightly kept him out |
Winesburgohio
10.24.19 | ...holy shit
fucking astounded lads
asstounded |
dimsim3478
10.24.19 | wut just cuz it's "supposed" to be boring doesnt justify its lack of value. i just feel like it should actually be interesting if this is all they're doing to handle the much-needed gap filling.
and i dont actually want this show to suddenly turn into a sequel in the familiar "oh heres all the characters you loved back together for another wacky adventure!" sense. it's just that...it's literally CALLED watchmen. so im feelin a lil cognitive dissonance from the fact that its title seems to convey this bold assertion that it IS "watchmen" even though at this stage it seems primarily concerned with things (some kinda police/racial conflict?) that have very little to do with what we've known for over 30 years as "watchmen". obviously thats not to say that this new show isnt great or cant be its own thing, cuz that first ep ruled and it's already masterfully established its own separate identity. im just sayin that the title thing feels weird to me, and i guess also the fact that this thing exists that kinda just incorporates the events of the source material but is about something totally different? i trust that the connectedness to the original will become apparent over the season tho, but even if it doesnt it's still awesome stuff |
rabidfish
10.24.19 | Gonna give it 2 more eps before deciding whether to keep watching or drop |
Rowan5215
10.24.19 | @dimsim man do your thing and all, but... you're complaining the show isn't clearly connected enough to its comic book roots but also you don't want to read the supplemental material that expressly connects it to its comic book roots. just a weird double standard is all I'm sayin |
dimsim3478
10.24.19 | i see what you're sayin but c'mon, i dont think anyone's gonna accept that some boring reading material is an essential part of experiencing this tv series, and i doubt it'll rectify my concerns as they relate to the actual tv series itself (of which the reading material is almost certainly not an essential component). and i dont think it's totally unrelatable to observe that it's currently unclear why this thing is literally just titled WATCHMEN. like, does it reflect the same themes? how much bearing do the characters/events of the comic have on the series? none of that was evident from that first episode, which is fine at this point; tantalising even, like season 1 of Umbrella Academy.
again, not a serious criticism by any means, particularly cuz we're barely into this thing and the first ep was fantastic regardless. it's just been buggin me a lil cuz i'm not gonna get an answer to this question at least for another couple weeks if not until the end of the season. |
JeetJeet
10.24.19 | First episode was perfection. Literal perfection. |
dimsim3478
10.24.19 | i gotsta know why it was raining squids. biggest question by far. seriously what the fuck? that was like when the ufo appeared in fargo season 2. |
DrGonzo1937
10.24.19 | Man, who the fuck skips the supplements in the comic? It brings a much richer, more rounded experience |
dimsim3478
10.24.19 | the ones they did for the tv series are like a pale imitation of the comic supplements; they're not written by alan moore, after all. probably more worthwhile to read the summaries of them. |
Faraudo
10.24.19 | Yeah the premiere was excellent. Lindelof kept that Leftovers quality. |

10.24.19 | the film has big problems but i honestly think it's pretty entertaining. |
samwise2000
10.24.19 | @EoinCofa The Boys was pretty decent, but honestly the definitive way to experience any of these comics is just by reading them. Sometimes I feel the shows take too many liberties with the source material. |
Rowan5215
10.25.19 | the Snyder movie is genuinely one of the worst adaptations of anything ever by anyone. so glad this show is here to correct the record on Watchmen adaptations. |
JeetJeet

GhostB1rd
10.25.19 | Is this show woke? |
dimsim3478
10.25.19 | not really. im seeing some minor controversy accusing it of that but...it doesnt really push any kind of obvious one-sided political agenda. the plot at this stage is focused on racially charged conflict but its not running thru some kinda checklist of leftist rhetoric, it’s literally just got some white supremacists as antagonists. and i mean if you somehow find THAT objectionable...seems like you might be a bit racist y’know. apparently theres a lotta racist trolls tanking the rotten tomatoes audience score atm
@EoinCofa i love The Boys comic and the show is solid but neither of them “blows Watchmen away” in any sense |

dimsim3478
10.26.19 | haha ok ok it's just theres a lotta ppl criticising the show atm for being too "woke", which seems totally unfounded to me. like what the fuck is it preaching that's so objectionable? that white supremacy is bad? are we just not allowed to use racial conflict as a story element anymore? |
Rowan5215
10.26.19 | "hot take guys, here me out here, but I think violent racism is actually... like bad" - Lindelof and co.
"woooow wtf totally against the spirit of what alan moore wanted to say" - the internet |

Rorschach is just a shitty garbage-tier Question anyways. Fighting White Supremacy on a TV Show in 2019 is annoyingly woke. Just because Racism is bad, doesn't mean I need to see it in Neon signs all over fucking town. Find a better villain to fight instead of the Alt-Right. It's cliche at this point. |

11.20.19 | BRUH WHO SAW EPISODE 5? This show is easily becoming one of the best things of 2019 |
neekafat
11.20.19 | becoming? still think the pilot was the best episode but I love the show yeah |
ignorethefashion
11.20.19 | I'm fully invested in it now. At first I was a bit thrown off by Rorschach as the mascot for white supremacists. It felt pandering, and didn't really show respect for the character's complexities. The cavalry is inherently bad, but Rorschach battled between good and evil. The cavalry is made up of racists, but Rorschach hated everyone equally. He was a violent little man who hated society, yet still cared about justice and protecting the innocent.
But after some thought, I could see his journal being misinterpreted by a modern day media outlet, and it becoming the handbook for a hate group. He did specifically complain about liberals, among everyone else. The source material is known for inserting characters into the major political events of the era, so having Rorschach's image distorted to advance an agenda in the age of misinformation fits the theme.
And how good is Jeremy Irons' storyline? I'm stoked to see how the couple of remaining og characters fit into this world. |
neekafat
11.20.19 | To be fair, Alan Moore doesn't really respect Rorshach. I think the portrayal of him is true to form |
ignorethefashion
11.20.19 | I would agree that the character was written with some very intentional personality flaws. A lot of things about him were pretty terrible, but he wasn't without redeeming qualities. If he was all bad, his death would have had very little emotional impact on the reader/viewer. If he was alive in this story, I have to believe he'd be fighting the cavalry alongside the vigilantes. |

11.28.19 | Subtlety isn't really a word in this shows vocab, which makes it a lot of fun, but dumbs it down a bit as well, makes it predictable. I like it a lot but I do feel it isnt as smart as it thinks. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.28.19 | I'm enjoying season 2 of castle rock just as much if not more than this tbh, havent seen mr robot tho |
Rowan5215
11.28.19 | really? I've never seen anything quite like that, and I don't think fever dream was the vibe it was going for at all. it's pretty easy to just throw a bunch of surreal shit at the screen and make it look cool, but as Legion S2 painfully demonstrated, if you're just making shit up as you go and not trusting in your characters, it's just a visually cool first-year art student film
this was totally different in that the restraint, between the b&w, the really slow pacing, the way it showed years passing without hitting us over the head with it, the lack of big showy setpieces was all in service of the character. I don't think it could be more unlike fucking Legion if it tried |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.28.19 | Well if you didnt get "fever dream" vibes out of it then they completely misfired on portraying the intensity of the drug at all. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.28.19 | Also you forget that season 1 of legion and season 2 of legion arent the same |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.28.19 | Although even calling s2 of legion a first year art student film is pretty despicable dude I went to art school you have no clue how terrible first year art films are. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.28.19 | The show in general quite obviously takes plenty of queues from legion ngl, it's just a lot more predictable and has worse dialogue |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.28.19 | Even the memory episode of season 1 of castle rock was similar. I probably sound harsher than I actually feel but someone has to fight the rowan signature brand of hyperbole |

11.28.19 | "Well if you didnt get "fever dream" vibes out of it then they completely misfired on portraying the intensity of the drug at all."
I feel like that might have been the point for this one. I actually was expect a more chaotic, frantically edited time-jumping episode, like the Castle Rock s1 ep which was fantastic too, but this ep was about tracing one specific story through the years and so was a lot more stylised jumping thru time - shit like projecting the movie he's talking about on the wall behind as they're discussing it AND using it as a transition to the next scene gets me wet
"Also you forget that season 1 of legion and season 2 of legion arent the same"
trust me I don't, and I'm still salty about just how different they are. but s2 of Legion is just my go-to example to demonstrate how pretty colours and cool images does not a good show make
"The show in general quite obviously takes plenty of queues from legion ngl, it's just a lot more predictable and has worse dialogue"
I just don't really see it, apart from maybe the visuals. the way they've gone about unspooling their mysteries is totally different, Watchmen is obviously a lot more invested in having a moral about society at large and dealing with some thornier issues, every single episode of Legion pretty much came back to one character because they didn't know what else to do whereas we're six episodes into Watchmen and there's been two almost completely about characters who aren't the main |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.09.19 | ^well I was obviously referring to the visuals and the tone of some of the more surreal elements. Anyways these last 2 episodes have sucked ass |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.09.19 | It's like the writers randomly forgot the tone of their own show these last 2. Fuckin yikes. |
JeetJeet
12.09.19 | Fuckkk the new ep was amazing. Shoutout to Yahya Abdul for pulling off Manhattan. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.09.19 | Are we watching the same thing? This was the worst episode by a mile |
JeetJeet
12.09.19 | Watch it again. |
hal1ax
12.09.19 | one of the weaker eps imo |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.09.19 | @jeet lol no, no thanks, I'd really rather not |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.09.19 | My knee-jerk reaction last week was that I didnt like this twist but I decided I'd wait and let the show explain itself... they did and it is still terrible |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.09.19 | ROWAN DEFEND THIS MESS |
Rowan5215
12.18.19 | yeah this fizzled out a bit did it not lmao, still super well-made and everything but the last 3 eps and the "twist" were all goofy as hell. first 6 were incredible |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.18.19 | The final episode made up for the 2 before it a little bit at least. Maybe dr. Manhatten is just a terrible character |
Rowan5215
12.19.19 | that's interesting, more I think about the finale the more I actually kind of hated it? when I'm not on my phone at work will expand thoughts |
Dunpeal
12.19.19 | this was always going to be difficult to milk. It was decent enough, I guess. They need to let this die at one season. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.19.19 | Not gonna go on and say I liked the finale persae, it's just that it was nice to get all the good characters like mirror guy back instead of having to watch dr manhatten be a fucking absolute fucking "f" bomb for another entire episode |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.19.19 | It was nice that he fucking died basically |
hal1ax
12.19.19 | ya i liked the finale more than the penultimate episode, that shit was a mess. but yea i agree, there was a marked decline in the last few eps |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.19.19 | One of the sharpest declines in television I've seen in a long time |
Rowan5215
12.19.19 | for sure Mirror Guy/Blake duo was my favourite part of the whole show and their scenes in the finale were all good, but arresting Ozymandias for what he did 20 years ago was just some silly happy ending stuff. honestly as much as Jeremy Irons was great I got pretty sick of Veidt in this once it became obvious the whole mystery of his scenes wasn't nearly as interesting as it seemed in the first 3-4 eps (the big reveal was... he just voluntarily went to Europa then realised being stuck there with no real people sucked and he couldn't get back? cmon)
I agree with you about Dr. M too. not because he's a bad character inherently but because introducing him in the third act of the season is very hard to pull off, cos suddenly all the small-scale human interactions the entire season has been about become entirely meaningless and he can just snap his fingers and win the whole fight instantly. as soon as that twist happened I was worried the show would become about silly shit like people stealing his powers with ridiculous machines and him being a sad super-god and that's... exactly what happened. none of the more interesting stuff (the racism text, Hooded Justice plot, anything to do with Looking Glass) ultimately got resolved, except for Angela's granddad getting a monologue explaining the whole theme of the show with information we already knew
...but hey nice to know racism can be solved if you just wait for the leaders of the new KKK to be gathered in one place and then shoot em all away with your sci-fi laser rays. problem solved |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.19.19 | Lmao agreed across the board but dont forget one crucial thing. Manhattan may be able.to snap.his fingers and win the whole fight instantly....
But he wont. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.19.19 | Because "muhhhh" *sulks* |
Rowan5215
12.19.19 | and he'll *maybe* give his wife superpowers by making her a bomb-ass egg but we can't be sure because ambiguity has become prized over actually finishing your story so bet ur ass we're not gonna confirm or deny that shit bro |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.19.19 | That whole scene had my fucking LAWLing. What a fucking gamble. Ima give this egg super powers and assume that in the heat of her grief over my death she'll be like "ima eat floor egg cuz flashback" |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.19.19 | I also love the scene where one single frozen squid fucking obliterates psycho bougie's hand and then we watch a bajillion frozen squids either conveniently miss every other person in the area or somehow get nerf'd and suddenly have a fraction of the penetrating power as the first one |
Rowan5215
12.19.19 | ugh right
not to mention how the ENTIRE fucking lesson of both comic and the show was about how vigilantism is bad/psychotic and people do it to work through their own trauma instead of altruism but forget all that because she can have literal superpowers so now it's a good thing! |
Rowan5215
12.19.19 | lmao I love how Angela was perfectly safe in her blue box thingy but she still grabs a thin piece of plastic to run through the frozen squid rain cos she needs to get to the theatre the season started in for that ~narrative symmetry~ |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.19.19 | Good point also one other thing
What the FUCK did that chick save veidt for lmao |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.19.19 | That theater was holding up to those gatling squids real nice, couldnt even hear them |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.19.19 | They really should have kept the show more grounded. A lot of shows take the "less is more" approach to superpowers etc because of a lack of budget or rights being tied up and that's often annoying and limiting but in this instance they really should have strategically and tastefully kept.manhatten as more of an enigma |
Rowan5215
12.19.19 | my impression was she literally did it all to prove to her dad she could build herself from nothing like he did, which is a hell of a motivation to a) rescue your dad from Garden of Eden Europa and b) literally become god and c) also funny because he just got teleported away and didn't see her die horribly because of his frozen squid attack |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.19.19 | Oh yeah I immediately forgot about that entire flashback because it was so uninteresting lol. But yeah she just sabotaged herself |
Dunpeal
12.19.19 | i just tuned in to see blue dong, tbh
i got black dong instead, which was a small consolation |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.19.19 | Dr. Manhatten: the first trans-racial superhero |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.19.19 | What ever happened to the vigilante who lubes himself up with cooking oil and slides into gutters? |
Rowan5215
12.20.19 | Lube Man? he was confirmed in the extra material to be Petey, which is literally the best thing that happened in the finale and it wasn't in the finale. (he quit the FBI and kept doing his Lube Man thing vigilante-style) |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.20.19 | That. Is. Fucking. Hilarious. |
Rowan5215
12.20.19 | it's so good, justifies the entire 3 episodes |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.20.19 | They should have just done a lube man origin story for the rest of the season |
Rowan5215
12.20.19 | Doc Manhattan time travel ep but instead it's just Lube Man throughout his backstory |
Rowan5215
12.20.19 | "It's December, 1985. I'm watching my father trip and fall on the lube mom left on the top step. When he falls and splits his head I think of how beautiful liquid is, how easily it conducts our bodies across hard surfaces" |
