07.03.19 | because the size of your ages are increasing, while the difference stays fixed, so your ages begin to completely dwarf the difference:
1/2 = .5
2/3 = .666
3/4 = .75
4/5 = .8
5/6 = .833333
etc
you're essentially converging on 1, or mathematically 0 difference relative to your numbers.
if the maths throwing you off, think of the concept of relativity. if one dude was given 1 candy bar and you have 0, you'd be pissed. but if one guy was given 1001 candy bars and you were given 1000 candy bars, you'd see that difference as negligible cause you have so much damn candy |

07.03.19 | so when you converge on 1, is that when you both die? |
TheSpaceMan
07.03.19 | no problem dude, questioning fallacy like that can be scoffed at by people but thats actually a super good quality to have, its analytical af. thought it was a cool question!
"so when you converge on 1, is that when you both die?"
nope, it means youve both lived an infinite amount of years. thats the concept of limits, specifically the limit as your age approaches infinity |
TheSpaceMan
07.03.19 | that actually plays into xeno's paradox, which is also a similar paradox to what you brought up:
imagine the tortuoise and the bunny are about to start their race. the turtle gets a head start, and covers 10 miles. now the bunny leaves the starting line and needs to catch up to the turtle, so it runs that 10 miles. but in the time it took the bunny to get there, the turtles moved a bit further so the bunny needs to cover THAT distance. so the bunny does cover that distance, but again the turtle has covered even more ground, and the process repeats. how does the bunny ever pass the turtle?? its kinda trippy to think about, but the answer lies in convergence / limit theories which is proven with calculus |

07.04.19 | Reaching the age where you have your first solid memories of your own parents at the same age is pretty heavy - just reached it :D
Before that, when you hit your thirties and your parents are in their fifties you just get that peer to peer adult thing going, the whole dynamic changes. So yeah, the age gap ‘feels’ less too as the relative proportion goes down. That thing only increases over time...until your parents become elderly.
Having three grandparents in their 90s you also see your parents become the parents to their infant-like elderly parents. It’s all a trip, comes to all of us. |

Spaceman's candy bar thing was a really good way of explaining this (I was contemplating coming up with a similar analogy), in fact the thread ended up being a little more interesting than I initially expected, so well done guys. |
