Opeth - Full discography ranked

The result of this weeks DiscoRun. This one was a bitch to rate holy crap. One of the most consistent bands I know of (for the first 9 albums at least, woooo spoiler). There are quite a couple of songs that have the same rating for me so I did those at random. Keep in mind that I hadn't listened to Orchid and Morningrise before, while others are some of my favorite albums of all time, so songs from those two are bound to be lower on my list.
94Opeth
My Arms, Your Hearse

Prologue
Hard to rate this. Short intro in which nothing happens really. Just ambient sounds and a short piano. It does set the stage, but I'm not gonna put this higher than actual full songs if you don't mind. In fact, I will not rate any of the shorter instrumental songs. Real rating starts at 84
93Opeth
My Arms, Your Hearse

Madrigal
Another one I can't really place higher than actual full-fledged songs, just because this one is a minute and a half. I really do like it though, and it fits perfectly well on the record.
92Opeth
Orchid

Requiem
Just a sweet little instrumental. Not to much to say about it.
91Opeth
Sorceress

Persephone (slight return)
Instrumental outro
90Opeth
Sorceress

Persephone
Intro song. Not gonna rate
89Opeth
My Arms, Your Hearse

Epilogue
The third instrumental from this album and the best imo. Its so sad and beautiful and ends the album on a perfect note.
88Opeth
Heritage

Marrow of the Earth
I'm going to count this as an instrumental because it is clearly meant as an ambient piece.
87Opeth
Deliverance

For Absent Friends
Nice instrumental interlude, but I'm not going to rate them. All these kinds of songs are super good and fit the mood perfectly, but only Patterns in the Ivy is a song that I really really enjoy on its own.
86Opeth
Heritage

Heritage
Is there band alive that does better intro and short instrumental pieces? I have yet to hear them. This is another one that sets the pace and atmosphere so clearly and amazingly. So delicate and dark, like a rainy autumn day.
85Opeth
Blackwater Park

Patterns in the Ivy
This has always been my favorite short instrumental from Opeth. Its so moody and paints a thousand words without ever needing one
84Opeth
Pale Communion

Elysian Woes
I think Michaels voice really shine on most Opeth songs, but not here. His cleans really need some gravy to make them pop, and here its just really direct and dry which makes it brittle in a non-pleasant way for me.
83Opeth
Orchid

Under the Weeping Moon
Hmm. Dunno about this one. First listen impression but it felt a little less interesting and captivating than 'In the Mist..'
82Opeth
Heritage

Famin
Not my favorite. There's a lot of experimentation here and not all of it works for me. Its also a little to long for such a song I think.
81Opeth
Orchid

Silhouette
I'm starting to see that the rough edges are part of the appeal of Orchid. The fact that's its not all perfectly played and not all that tight give it a very natural feel that's kind of endearing.
80Opeth
Sorceress

The Seventh Sojourn
The first half of this song is really interesting, the second half pretty boring.
79Opeth
Pale Communion

River
Instrumentally, this song is so good, but the vocals completely ruin it for me, being continually slightly off-key. Could've been the best song on Pale Communion, but sadly it remains at the bottom half because of it
78Opeth
Sorceress

Strange Brew
A really odd song that I used to enjoy more than I do now. It just feels a little disjointed. The fact that it goes back to the beginning doesn't really work for me and almost feels a little like a cheap way to bring some cohesion.
77Opeth
My Arms, Your Hearse

Credence
The flow of …Hearse has always been excellent, and this is a welcome change from the menacing assault that was Demon of the Fall, but it remains as one of my less favorite Opeth acoustics.
76Opeth
Sorceress

Chrysalis
See Voice of Treason, exact same thing happening here.
75Opeth
Pale Communion

Voice of Treason
Eh, nothing on this album after the first two songs seem to stick with me. Its not that they're bad perse, it more that they just sound so same-y and bland to me.
74Opeth
Heritage

Folklore
I have the same problems with folklore that I have with Famin, in that I feel its just a tad to long for such a song. It doesn't grip me as a lot of others on Heritage do.
73Opeth
Heritage

Slither
It is good and I can tell the band had a lot of fun creating this, but it doesn't grab me really.
72Opeth
Sorceress

Era
One of the more memorable and catchy songs on Sorceress, but let's be honest here, compared to the rest of the discography of Opeth this all fall kinda flat doesn't it? Yeah...thought so.
71Opeth
Pale Communion

Moon Above, Sun Below
If I don't pay close attention, this is a song that I find I usually hardly remember, and usually that's not really a good thing. It doesn't really grip me, but it also means I'm not annoyed by it or find it boring.
70Opeth
Heritage

Nepenthe
I have a weak spot for that clean guitar broken chord melody in the first half. The song is a bit formless, but I think that was kind of the idea. The guitar solo's are highly suspect for me though.
69Opeth
Damnation

Ending Credits
The one instrumental I will rank, because it's basically a full song and four minutes long. It's a great one, but for me not one of the better ones on Damnation
68Opeth
Sorceress

Sorceress
This is the first time that I really notice that I don't like the production on this as much as I do the others. The bass is way to muddy or something idk. Good song though this.
67Opeth
Pale Communion

Goblin
Instrumental piece that I kinda like because of its sillyness and fun & Joy.
66Opeth
Deliverance

Master's Apprentices
Sweet heavy headbanging riff to start with, but for me as with A Fair Judgement, the middle part is just not as interesting as some (or even most) of the others. With so many amazing songs to choose from, its hard for me to put it higher than this. I feel this would've been better if they cut out most of the middle and just left us with the bookends.
65Opeth
Morningrise

Nectar
Ow damn that classical part that starts around the 6:50 mark is wonderful. Entire song is a little more all over the place but it makes for a nice change of pace on this album.
64Opeth
Orchid

Forest of October
It's weird. So far I've found Orchid to be both uneaven and very consistent. Consistent in that the same vibe is drawn throughout the album, inconsistent in the way some songs feel way more interesting to me than others. This is one of the more interesting ones for me.
63Opeth
Orchid

The Twilight is My Robe
Instrumentally the most prog song on Orchid so far. I like it.
62Opeth
Sorceress

The Wilde Flowers
Slightly better than Sorceress. The guitar solo in this is really fantastic.
61Opeth
Pale Communion

Faith in Others
Pale Communion ends in somewhat of a high point. It's a closer that is better than most of the other songs on it, and it's quite a nice atmospheric piece.
60Opeth
Ghost Reveries

Atonement
It's a great song Y'all, but I can't justify putting it higher than this, because theres simply to many great Opeth songs that I enjoy more than this. Atonement feels like a non-instrumental pallet cleanser more so than an actual song.
59Opeth
Damnation

Closure
I have no memory of this place. Seriously though, I can't remember ever having heard this song, though I'm pretty sure I've played Damnation a lot (last time was a quite a couple of years ago though). I like it, it feels less sad and a little more manacing.
58Opeth
Ghost Reveries

Isolation Years
The farewell of Ghost Reveries, and a sweet one it is. Very satisfying and simple melodies make it a great ending to one of the best albums ever created if you ask me.
57Opeth
Still Life

Serenity Painted Death
Gonna curse in church here, but this song does less to me than pretty much all others on Still Life. It just doesn't grip me the way Moonlaps/The Moor/Godhead's does
56Opeth
My Arms, Your Hearse

When
Michael's voice became so much better between Morningrise and …Hearse, and this is the first time it really shows.
55Opeth
Orchid

The Apostle in Triumph
A good closer to what turned out to be a pretty great debut record. All the signs that this would become a legendary band were there all along it seems.
54Opeth
Heritage

Haxprocess
This song is really great and one of the better ones from Heritage for sure. Another song that goes through so much that it feels like an entire journey on its own.
53Opeth
Damnation

To Rid the Disease
I always thought this was one of the less memorable songs on Damnation, but it turns out I was wrong. The piano part in the middle is perfect and although the first half is not the most memorable, the second half makes up for that.
52Opeth
Damnation

Windowpane
I can lose myself in guitar solo's like this one. So smooth, ambient and jazzy. Damnation overall is very good in this and Windowpane is an immediate representation of what the album has to offer.
51Opeth
Deliverance

A Fair Judgement
This song starts of so fricking strong and I always remember how great A Fair Judgement is, and then the second half comes around and I remember why it wasn't in my top Opeth songs, because I feel they could've done much more with that epicness that they start building in the first half.
50Opeth
Orchid

In the Mist She Was Standing
This is actually the first time listening to Orchid, and wow did I expect something completely different. I thought it would be much more rough around the edges and way different from the Opeth we all know and love, but this has most of the seeds that would later make legendary albums like Blackwater Park. Yeah it's a little old-school sounding, but its still pretty great!
49Opeth
Sorceress

A Fleeting Glance
The more subdued tracks on Sorceress are a lot better than the more hectic ones imo. This is a prime example of that, cus this is a great song.
48Opeth
Pale Communion

Eternal Rains Will Come
Let the full on 70's prog worship begin. In all honesty though, this is a great song and one of the better songs from Pale Communion imo.
47Opeth
Heritage

The Lines in My Hand
The bass gets so much more room on Heritage and really comes into its own. The acoustic guitar parts and drums on this are also really great!
46Opeth
Blackwater Park

The Funeral Portrait
My least favorite song from BWP, but still a great song in its own right. But then, I've never heard an album with only 10/10 songs, so someone needs to take the bottom spot right.
45Opeth
Morningrise

Advent
Wow, the production on Morningrise is so much better than on Orchid. Here we get our first taste of the modern Opeth. Morningrise was another album I'd never listened to before. This is a great song to start the album off.
44Opeth
Damnation

Death Whispered a Lullaby
Damnation is actually quite the catchy album. It's drowning in sadness, but a catchy sadness. 'Ohhh. Sleep my CHIIIIIILLLLLDDDD'
43Opeth
My Arms, Your Hearse

Karma
The climax of the story, and a pretty great one at that. This album flies by so fast its incredible.
42Opeth
Sorceress

Sorceress 2
What a really sweet little ballad and really one of the highlights from Sorceress imo.
41Opeth
Watershed

Coil
Completely amazing intro that's not quite a full song but not really a simple intro either.
40Opeth
Still Life

Benighted
I have a soft spot for the fingerpicking style acoustic guitar playing. I started playing with that style myself and still love it. It biases my rating for this song of course.
39Opeth
My Arms, Your Hearse

April Ethereal
Pfoeh, I forgot how good this was. Especially the second half of this song is so satisfying.
38Opeth
Pale Communion

Cusp of Eternity
Might be the best song on PC. It's my least favorite Opeth Record because from what I remember its very front loaded and those are not really better than the better songs on Heritage.
37Opeth
Watershed

Porcelain Heart
Slightly less good than the songs that came before it. It still has a very satisfying climax and a great buildup of themes and harmonies.
36Opeth
Damnation

Weakness
This song is a tender and brittle, a strong gust of wind will blow it apart. But it 'just' stays together, and that's precicely the beauty of this.
35Opeth
Blackwater Park

Harvest
Good acoustic song. Not their very best, but still pretty damn great.
34Opeth
My Arms, Your Hearse

The Amen Corner
One of my favorites from …Hearse. This song just has interesting passages for days.
33Opeth
Morningrise

The Night and the Silent Water
Feels like a very emotional song that seems to go through several stages of grief. Great piece
32Opeth
Ghost Reveries

Hours of Wealth
Such a sweet and smooth song that's more of an extensive interlude than an actual statement of the album, but I love it nonetheless.
31Opeth
Damnation

In My Time of Need
This song is just drenched in sorrow. It has such a cold, haunting atmosphere and is actually a very catchy song.
30Opeth
Morningrise

To Bid You Farewell
Huh that's weird. I know this song thoroughly, but I always thought it was from Damnation. I used to have it on a burned cd when I was 15. Beautiful song even after all these years.
29Opeth
Sorceress

Will O the Wisp
I think this might be my favorite song from Sorceress. It's a really sweet song with great melodies that stick and I found myself humming them often in the past.
28Opeth
Deliverance

Wreath
Ah Deliverence, sometimes the forgotten child of the Opeth catalogue. For me it can stand proud amongst all the others. Wreath is one of those first songs I ever heard by Opeth and although its maybe not the most memorable, it still holds a special place for me. The second half of the song is incredible.
27Opeth
Still Life

Face of Melinda
Saw this song played live and it gave me a completely new appreciation to the song. So far as I can remember its actually one of the only Opeth songs that have this clear of a dichotomy/buildup of a long acoustic beginning flowing into heavy riffing.
26Opeth
Still Life

White Cluster
Parts of this song are the best parts of Still Life and parts, mostly in the clean vocal department, feel a little off to me. Still a fricking fantastic song though, but it could've been slightly better imo.
25Opeth
Heritage

The Devil's Orchard
GOD IS DEAAAADD
24Opeth
Ghost Reveries

Beneath the Mire
Ghost Reveries has no weak spots man. Entire album is god-tier. Why am I even trying to rank this. Tis impossibru
23Opeth
Deliverance

By the Pain I See in Others
I always feel that they play that beginning just a tad to fast for comfort, making it very menacing. The entire song is very interesting with a lot of recurring themes and a very weird ending.
22Opeth
Still Life

Godhead's Lament
Another amazing track here. God Opeth have so many. I already feel like its so difficult to rank these and we haven't even come to my favorite albums yet.
21Opeth
Still Life

The Moor
I have such fond memories of this song, but I hadn't listened to it in ages.
20Opeth
Morningrise

Black Rose Immortal
The longest Opeth song. There's a lot to love here damn. This needs much more listens to rate properly, but for now I'll stamp a big fat 8,5/10 on this puppy.
19Opeth
Watershed

Hessian Peel
This song goes through so many different passages and vibes its really incredible that they made it all work together. Another high watermark of Watershed, if again, slightly underexposed and underappreciated.
18Opeth
Ghost Reveries

The Grand Conjuration
The second this kicks in I get pumped up. So evil and groovy and amazing.
17Opeth
Watershed

The Lotus Eater
This used to be one of my al-time favorite Opeth songs, but during this run I feel like there are so many greats to choose from that this one is just there with all the rest, not really pulling ahead anymore.
16Opeth
Ghost Reveries

The Baying of the Hounds
Doing the entire discorun makes me notice things I haven't before. It comes to me now that Ghost Reveries feels just slightly more epic and grandiose than say Deliverence or Still Life. This song is a good example of it. I love epic and grandiose, give me more plz ty.
15Opeth
Heritage

I Feel the Dark
I remember finding this song incredibly boring the first time I listened to it back in 2011. Ow how wrong was I! This song shifts so much without it becoming unhinged. Fantastic song.
14Opeth
Watershed

Hex Omega
As I finish Watershed, I notice that there is not a single flaw or sub-par song on here. The overal quality might even be more consistent than Ghost Reveries or Blackwater Park, which surprises me completely.
13Opeth
Blackwater Park

Dirge for November
This was the first song I ever heard from Opeth, during a guitar lesson back when I was 12 or 13. This was long before I listened to Opeth or metal in general. When I started listening a couple of years later I found that not only did I already know this song, I could actually play the first half of it.
12Opeth
Watershed

Burden
A very underappreciated song. The multiple sweeping guitar solos, the soaring vocals, that Hammond solo. It's all briliant! It just barely misses out on being a top 10 song, and its silly that songs as good as this don't even make the top 10.
11Opeth
Still Life

Moonlapse Vertigo
This is such a fantastic song. From the very satisfying intro riff to the middle where they almost go into full jazz freestyle goodness, it's all fantastic.
10Opeth
Blackwater Park

Bleak
Blackwater Park as an album has sooooo much to give, and the first two songs show precisely why. Just another fantastic song overal with no weak points.
9Opeth
Watershed

Heir Apparent
Calling best guitar solo right here! Entire song is fantastic, but that solo is where it's at!
8Opeth
Damnation

Hope Leaves
I always imagine that this song can drive a big strong man to tears. Its so gorgeous and haunting and sad and perfect.
7Opeth
Deliverance

Deliverance
The final three minutes is surely one of my farovites in all of Opeth's songs, but the entire song is amazing tbf. So heavy and blasting yet so atmospheric at the same time.
6Opeth
Blackwater Park

The Drapery Falls
Another one I have very fond memories of. Goddamn this is so hard to rate. Is this better than Demon of the Fall? Well then, what about Deliverance?
5Opeth
My Arms, Your Hearse

Demon of the Fall
Opeth's first true masterpiece if you ask me. So tightly written and brutal, yet the 'Run away' feel so like a pure plea that it turns really sad too. And that acoustic bit before 'DEMON' is so fucking manacing, really edge of your seat stuff.
4Opeth
Ghost Reveries

Reverie / Harlequin Forest
This had to go into my top 10. Its one of my favorite Opeth songs and goes through so many movements and passages that are all almost equally amazing.
3Opeth
Blackwater Park

The Leper Affinity
My god this song is seriously top tier GOAT list material in music overall.
2Opeth
Ghost Reveries

Ghost of Perdition
I'm in such a struggle to put this at my number 1 or not. It is my favorite Opeth song for sure, but I think BWP might be just a tad better.
1Opeth
Blackwater Park

Blackwater Park
One of the best songs ever written imo. Some might call it overrated, but this song makes me feel things man.
