makkusu92
06.12.19 | I use to be a nondestructive inspector in the air force. Basically I verified cracks on air planes, oil pipes, roller coasters, train tracks, etc, using a variety of inspection methods. Shooting x-rays through metal and reading the film, fluorescent penetrant (watching paint dry), magnetic particles (magnets), ultrasonic inspection transducers (the machine they use on pregnant women), eddy current, and oil analysis. It's a great career if you're single and love to travel to other countries. Some of my ndt buddies got out and they now work for big companies like space x, boeing, lockheed martin, etc. You do a lot of traveling around the world and the pay is great, you don't even need a college level degree for this career and you'll make just as much money as some of the engineers you work with. This career is very obscure, so not many people know about it. Helps if you were prior ndt in the military.
Me now, I retired at 25. Retirement sure is boring but I like it. |

Ambrosian
06.12.19 | I dig ditches |
makkusu92
06.12.19 | @neekafat I got permanently injured while in the military that pretty much forced me into retirement. I could literally die if I continue to work, stress myself out, lift anything heavier than 10 Ibs, get punched in the chest, etc. I'm pretty much housebound for the remainder of my life. My main aorta could explode and it's night night forever, so I gotta take things easy. |
Ambrosian
06.12.19 | makkusu92 how'd you do it? |
Ambrosian
06.12.19 | oh holy shit |

Ambrosian
06.12.19 | You get some kind of compensation? Cause that's awful dude |
makkusu92
06.12.19 | @Ambrosian I use to be able to jog for up to 30 minutes straight, but when I started having trouble breathing while running around 2016 I couldn't jog for more then 5 minutes. So I decided to get checked up on and found out I had a thoracic aortic aneurysm. The VA first thought it was genetics, I got out and moved to Houston. I actually got the genetic testing done at the Houston VA and they told me there's no way it was genetics. I told them I had never had any heart problems or breathing trouble before so they had to give me 100% + housebound disability, also the air force changed my disability rating from 60% TDRL for depression to 100% PDRL for my thoracic aortic aneurysm disability. I never took any leave/ vacation time off and I was a work horse. I just burned myself out I guess. |
makkusu92
06.12.19 | It kind of sucks finding that out that you may have been born with a heart problem, for a while I started to blame my parents. It's a good thing I actually got tested though and I told them they didn't pass it on to their child. I was in a very dark place for a while, that first year was rough man. |

06.13.19 | @JayEnder thanks man I do appreciate it. |

garas
06.14.19 | That's cool! Immunotherapeutics are very trendy and interesting.
I got used to those scepticals, haha. But I don't care, since it leads me to have good publications and results + much easier to use than TALEN and other stuff. (Still very hard tho...tomato doesn't "like it" that much, haha) |
BenThatsMyJamin
06.14.19 | Yeah it's an insanely interesting project for a placement student, I'm honoured they've given it to me!
Would love to work with CRISPR at some point too - good luck with your tomatoes! |

06.17.19 | you dont want to hear about it Egarran, but usually pretty cool always changing, never doing the same thing twice, at the very least it does not get boring |
Dimorphic
06.17.19 | I do contract work for large manufacturing/engineering companies where I basically examine the process of task performance in the development of complex structures and the environments of work. I identify weaknesses and limitations (there are always loads since the infrastructure is generally built decades ago without the human operator in mind) and write reports for management to basically either give justification for them not doing anything or to be like "dude, sort this shit out, come on". But I'm thinking of doing an MSc. in something slightly different because the infrastructure is so big and expensive that it's rarely financially feasible to make real changes anyway, so I basically just do all the work without the guys on the shop-floor seeing any benefits in the long run. |
Egarran
06.17.19 | >you dont want to hear about it Egarran, but usually pretty cool always changing, never doing the same thing twice, at the very least it does not get boring
Hmm, this does sound like something I want to hear more about, though. Hopefully I can break the ice by mentioning that one of my students had been tortured in Syria. |
