Sput's MAY 2019 Song of the day

Good day to you, visitor! Welcome to this month's Song of the day thread! You might know the drill: each day of May will revolve around a song which YOU can nominate! So, share your fave track in the comments, please add a link (preferably YouTube/Bandcamp) of where we can find it and voilà! I'll assign the track to its own day, and we're ready to go! Tell us what you think of the rec'd tracks by scoring them out of 5, please also add your scores to our magic Sput Song of the day-spreadshit which will calculate all sorts of cool stuff: ( ). Oh, and one more thing: we always have a theme. It's completely voluntary, if you want to rec something else, please do, but if you're interetsed to spice things up, here it goes! May's theme is COVERS. No, not cover art, but artists covering other artists. Share your fave cover, and make us decide whether it is better than the original, even more appaling (was that even possible!?) or just 'meh'. Enjoy! Don't forget to go out sometime too!

''Badbadnotgood - Seasons''
Original artist: Future Islands
Rec'd by: Papa Universe

not really sure, whether or not to call this a cover, because they even enlisten Sam Herring to do the vocals, but it is their bluesy reinterpretation of the song.

3Spanish Love Songs
Sea Shepherd Benefit Vol 3

''Spanish Love Songs - Funeral''
Original artist: Phoebe Bridgers
Rec'd by: SlothcoreSam

The original is great, lyrics are stellar. But Spanish love songs add that pop-punk angst and turn it into a classic.

''Myrkur - Song to Hall Up High (Live)''
Original artisht: Bathory
Rec'd by: DungeonBoy

Performed live, in the Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum in Oslo, Norway. A very delicate piece that really showcases Myrkur's incredible voice and it's a Bathory cover performed in a large burial chamber m/

''Brandi Carlile - Madman Across the Water"

My dad showed me this cover earlier today and it's gotta be one of the coolest covers ever, especially since the original is probably my favorite Elton John track

''Mazzy Star - Blue Flower''
Original artist: Slapp Happy

been listening to this album with love since the early 2000s and only recently noticed this was a cover, it's always been quintessential mazzy star. upbeat jangly bluesy rock track with killer sandoval vocals! i guess it's my favorite cover

14Jerry Lee Lewis
Live at the Star Club, Hamburg

"Jerry Lee Lewis - Money (That's What I Want)"
Original artist: Barrett Strong
Rec'd by: RunoftheMill

So these rock 'n' roll guys were the pop stars of yore and similar to those of today, they rarely wrote any of their own songs. I can't really compare it to the original (Barrett Strong also didn't write the song, so w/e). Jerry Lee really has a great energy to his performance and makes this smooth, jazzy and incredibly fun. Shine your dancing shoes, wear your nice shirt or skirt, and get those feet movin'!

17TV on the Radio
Young Liars

''TV on the Radio - Mr. Grieves"
Original artist: The Pixies
Rec'd by: neekafat

Probably the best, creepiest a capella song I've ever heard, taking the psychotic Pixies track and turning it into something short of a demented Disney villain tune.

Ars: 3.3
Minus: 3.6
18Soundtrack (Film)
The Great Gatsby (Music from Baz Luhrmann's Film)

''Owsey - July, You And I"
Original artist: Lana Del Rey
Original track: "Young and Beautiful"
Rec'd by: budgie

i'm not a fan of lana del rey despite her sometimes being called a successor of mazzy star for whatever reason. in any case, this ambient-style remix is super fun

''Agua de Annique - Come Wander With Me''
Original artist: Jeff Alexander and Anthony Wilson, sung by Bonnie Beecher

Anneke van Giersbergen has the best voice ever, beautifully sad song written for The Twilight Zone.
Bela Lugosi's Dead

''CHVRCHES - Bela Lugosi's Dead''
Original artist: Bauhaus
Rec'd by: Papa Universe

this song might've already been rec'd in this series before, but I don't care. I love the original, I surprisingly enough enjoyed this cover. to this day it stands as one of the few decent pop renditions of old classic anything-but-pop-songs, as well as perhaps the only great Chvrches song.
The Director's Cut

''Fantomas - The Omen''

A cover of a movie theme, off my favourite covers album of all time. The Directors Cut.
