|RANKING: Nine Inch Nails|
Having recently re-listened to basically every main NiN release, I thought it was time to start some arguments.
For the record, I don't think Trent has put out anything under a 3.5/5 with Nine Inch Nails.
|13||Nine Inch Nails|
Best experienced in the context of shooting fiends with a nail-gun. (Included because I fkn love Quake)
Highlights: Quake by ID Software – go play it. It's a classic.
|12||Nine Inch Nails|
No hate, this just isn't what I'm after from NiN.
|11||Nine Inch Nails|
An interesting slice of history for Nine Inch Nails. Moving between what NiN was with Pretty Hate Machine and what NiN became with The Downward Spiral.
Highlights: "Wish", "Help Me I Am In Hell"
|10||Nine Inch Nails|
It's okay. Very DIY vibe.
Highlights: "Head Down", "The Four of Us are Dying", "Echoplex"
|9||Nine Inch Nails|
Some absolute bangers on here, but it's basically a not-quite-as-good version of With Teeth
Highlights: "Came Back Haunted", "All Time Low", "Various Methods of Escape"
|8||Nine Inch Nails|
A little more meandering than the other two parts of the three part run, pretty much a dead-heat with Not the Actual Events.
Highlights: "Less Than", "The Lovers"
|7||Nine Inch Nails|
Not the Actual Events
Highlights: "Branches/Bones", "She's Gone Away", "Burning Bright (Field on Fire)
|6||Nine Inch Nails|
Pretty Hate Machine
This is where it started to get difficult. Like really difficult. But despite the immaturity of this record, it simply can't be denied.
Highlights: "Head Like a Hole", "Down In It", "Sanctified"
|5||Nine Inch Nails|
A great mix of weirdness and noise with some Bowie thrown if for good measure.
Highlights: "Shit Mirror", "Ahead of Ourselves" "God Break Down the Door"
|4||Nine Inch Nails|
It may be poppy. But With Teeth has some of Trent's best songwriting on it.
Highlights: 'You Know What You Are?", "Getting Smaller", "Right Where it Belongs"
|3||Nine Inch Nails|
The Downward Spiral
Probably three spots lower than you'd hoped right?
Highlights: "Heresy", "March of the Pigs", "Reptile"
|2||Nine Inch Nails|
You're triggered rn, right? Love the vibe of this album. Love the concept. Album left me stunned.
Highlights: "Survivalism", "Capital G", "The Great Destroyer"
|1||Nine Inch Nails|
It's perfect. The first disc especially so.
Highlights: "The Great Below", "We're in this Together", "I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally"
|3 is 1|
|"Probably three spots lower than you'd hoped right?"|
|3 is definitely 1.|
|3 could have been 2, but 1 is definitely 1.|
|I can fuck with that, TDS and Fragile are both perfect and interchangeable on my personal ranking. Year Zero would probably be my #3. |
|3 is 1, 1 is 2|
|Agreed with number 1, but damn. Broken is too low.|
The Fragile > TDS > Broken
|Year Zero is my fave by far and it's awesome to see it so high.|
Album crushes the others
|9. Ghosts I-IV|
8. Year Zero
7. With Teeth
6. The Slip
5. Pretty Hate Machine
4. The Fragile
3. Hesitation Marks
2. Bad Witch
1. The Downward Spiral
Daily reminder that NiN is a mediocre band with some really good stuff that is overhyped by it's fans as groundbreaking because Trent Reznor is a douchebag who thinks he's smarter than everybody else.
|2 might be my fav ...|
|I like Year Zero but can’t believe how many rank it above TDS and TF. It’s mid tier NIN to me. Makes me think that for many it was their introductory album to NIN, but TDS was mine back in 6th grade so perhaps that’s why I favor the earlier albums.|
|A brave list. To me, nos. 1, 3, 6, and 11 are tops (not necessarily in that order). But I dig all of it, excluding Ghosts (have it, but never listen to it) and the three recent EPs. I really try to like the EPs, but have a hard time with them...especially the Bowie worship on Bad Witch.|
|Yes, finally someone gets the best album right|
|Mad props for 1 and 2, DEFINITELY the correct order. Year Zero is absolutely incredible and yes, it's better than The Downward Spiral. Incredible atmosphere and continuity on that one. The Fragile obviously tops all. |
|Been listening to 3 more recently and it's now at the stage where, if I could, they'd both be 2. Especially looking more into the concept behind it.|
|props to you for ranking 13 1's, must've been hard|
|Actually the top 3/4 were pretty much set. The problem came around the middle for me. |
|3 & 4 would be top for me. Maybe stating the obvious but 90s NIN is quite different to my ears than mid 00s NIN which is again different to recent NIN. |
