RANKING: Misery Signals

In which I fanboy over the best metalcore band of all time.

Controller

As powerful an album now as it was when it was released. The instrumentals are soaring and inspiring while being crushing at the same time. Gives me that "on top of a mountain" feeling. Karl's vocals are beastly and his phrasing is a step above many others in the genre.

Of Malice and the Magnum Heart

The obvious first step for the band, being a lot more straight forward and raw than later releases. Still an incredible listen. Jesse does what Karl doesn't on this and makes the pain more personal, the Shai Hulud influences perhaps showing through a little more.

Absent Light

A worthy successor to Controller even if it could never have been as good. Absent Light basically being a slightly worse copy of Controller would warrant slightly lower score if Sputnik allowed it. I personally enjoy this one at least as much as "Of Malice..." but it simply isn't as good of an album.

Jhazmyne's Lullaby

This is basically Misery Signals, even though it's a completely different band. A lot of what makes Misery Signals powerful is on display here, just with a more straight-ahead approach.

The more progressive elements come further forward here with mixed results – something they'd go on to perfect with "Controller". The final product offers a few huge tunes but with a lot of tracks that feel just sort of there. Misery Signals working themselves out is still better than a lot of their contemporaries at their peak though. Worth a listen for the Patrick Stump feature if nothing else.

It's the EP - the band was only just getting their sound together and there's a reason only "The Year Summer Ended in June" made it any further than this. Worth listening to for having one of the best tracks of the band's career on, even though the album version is better realised.
7Solace (CAN)
Call & Response

Karl's solo project that, just by nature of him being on it, kinda sounds like Misery Signals but with big 8 string riffs instead of melodic progressive metalcore goodness. No other members appear on this. It's enjoyable for what it is, but it lacks a certain complexity that makes the core Misery Signals output so engaging. Being at the bottom of the Misery Signals ranking list still puts "Call & Response" above your favourite band.
