| Metal: Cult Classics Pt. XIX
Part 19.
Another 10 below 100 votes. | 1 | | Depressive Age First Depression
Debut record by one of the proponents of the German technical thrash scene of the early 90's and like anything noteworthy they've got a sound that can't really be quite compared to any of their colleagues. Technical, thrashy yet atmospheric in an almost "grimy big city in the 80's" kinda way. The vocalist has a distinctly German character to his voice that might take a while to overcome, but he's got a weird way of creeping into your head. Both this and the follow-up are prog-thrash essentials. | 2 | | Opprobrium Beyond The Unknown
Formerly known as Incubus, the Brazilian-Americans underwent a name change because apparently a less important Californian band already had it trademarked. A testicle-crushing piece of blistering death/thrash that will pummel you senseless. It's got a Christian character to its subject matter, but who cares; it's the riffs that matter. | 3 | | Deeds of Flesh Reduced to Ashes
One of the better known (and better) brutal death metal bands with a surprisingly "aural" take on the sound making it feel like you're being surrounded and engulfed by the fiery hellscape. Here they reached their apex of songwriting and riffcraft imho. | 4 | | Thanatos Emerging from the Netherworlds
Death/thrash classic from the once great Dutch classic death metal scene. Riffs and vicious snarls with a weirdly "thin" production job that almost gives off a cryptic character and fits the sound like a glove.
Special mention for the more-metal-than-thou cover art. | 5 | | The Crown Crowned in Terror
A classic example from the time they were the kings of melodic death/thrash. Blistering riff work and instantly memorable leads with a vicious Lindberg behind the mic. There was a time these guys were unfuckwithable and this one of the greatest records that came out of that era. | 6 | | Reverend Bizarre III: So Long Suckers
The final farewell of the legendary doom band. Excessive...meandering...? Probably. Yet ultimately brilliant when it counts. Together with Esoteric this is probably one of the rare cases where I'm happily willing to get behind a two-hour-long metal record. | 7 | | Fleshcrawl Descend Into the Absurd
A serious contender for the title of my personal favorite German OSDM classic, this is a grimy example of mean-spirited atmospheric death/doom. Remorseless and fiendish stuff that will crush you under the weight of malevolent darkness. | 8 | | Holy Moses Finished with the Dogs
Supposedly touted by Fenriz as the best female vocal performance in extreme metal and since it's a statement coming from Fenriz, who am I to say otherwise?
Ferocious thrash Teutonic-style with some hardcore punk sensibilities. Oh yeah, the vocals do indeed rule. | 9 | | Pist.on Number One
Based on the cover art as well as the band name, it's difficult to have any expectations about the music contained inside. Produced by T0N's Josh Silver, this is a semi-forgotten cult favorite from the 90's NYC alternative metal scene; groove, a bit of sludge, some atmospheric gothic sensibilities, lyrics that come off as the incoherent musings of the local nut job who's about to either gun down himself or someone else...and a singer with a fairly unique tone to his voice. While very much a product of its time and place, it remains one of the greatest examples in its own particular style. | 10 | | Cenotaph (MX, Death Metal) The Gloomy Reflection of Our Hidden Sorrows
Eternal classic of Mexican death metal. Grimy yet intensely atmospheric with a rumbling sound that could cause a seismic shift. Corchado went on to form the equally brilliant The Chasm, but the sound on this curiosity remains unduplicated. | |

11.25.18 | This is not the place for Metallica, Berry | BerryGarlicia
11.25.18 | Yes it is | Thalassic
11.25.18 | This ain't the place to troll, Berry | WoodeeX
11.25.18 | any list that doesn't include mainstream thrash bands are irrelevant, according to berry. | J() Alexander
11.25.18 | Hey, Mexican death metal, nice, I'll listen to that. | FlugkillerMcLibtardx
11.25.18 | Been meaning to check 3 | TheNotrap
11.25.18 | Props for 2 and 3. Deeds is my favorite BDM band.
I saw Emerging From the... tour, it was one of my first gigs..good times | naughtcturnal
11.25.18 | great list. needs disgorge | Deathconscious
11.25.18 | glad to see 6 and 10 here m/ | Deathconscious
11.25.18 | Disgorge are one of the biggest brutal death metal bands out there, not exactly cult classic material. | Firedust
11.25.18 | Berry, no offense, but metallica sux | Thalassic
11.25.18 | I featured Disgorge on a previous list. Their records got less than 100 votes and they got a bit of a "classic" status in their respective style so they apply for this series.
I'm a simple man. | Deathconscious
11.25.18 | within the metal community theyre pretty big though. over 300,000 likes on facebook. they could apply for classic, sure. i would say theyre far from being cult classic. | Thalassic
11.25.18 | Yeah you know, I don't really use the term "cult" literally. I could call it "underground classics' but then again, there are albums regarded as underground here that got 600 something votes. That's why I stuck with the name "cult" as a means to notify some records that have below 100 votes.
Probably just because I found it had a nice ring to it. | StrikeOfTheBeast
11.25.18 | kickass albums as usual. | naughtcturnal

Depressive Age, especially. | Casavir
12.07.18 | You should Hexenhaus on one of these at some point. | Thalassic
12.07.18 | The Edge of Eternity is a sweet record so it might get featured in the future.
The thing is I only really feature records I own on CD myself. So I first need to snatch a copy of that album. | Casavir
12.07.18 | Honestly, all of your lists deserve to be featured as all of this stuff is better than a lot of the regularly bumped stuff, having gone through all the lists again. | Thalassic
12.07.18 | Cheers. There are a few albums I still have on the list (Depressive Age's second for instance), but I need to buy some new stuff again. Right now my car is costing me a ton and all the weightlifting supplements don't come cheap either, so currently I don't really have a huge budget for the rare out of print records. 7 and 10 for instance were quite costly. | Casavir
12.07.18 | Yeah, I can imagine. I'm just glad you've gotten two good ones out last month. First Depression is a lost classic as it is. | Thalassic
12.07.18 | Really unique band in general yeah. | Casavir
12.07.18 | It still sounds quite modern even today, honestly. |
