Summoning Ranked
A very difficult list for an extremely good band |
1 | | Summoning Oath Bound
Nearly tied with the number 2 pick, this record is among the most melodic they have put out. It took me a while to fully appreciate it due to the production (which i have since grown to love), but this is a record full of beauty and infectious melodies. Mirdautas Vras, Might and Glory and Northward are extremely good tracks and are highlights, but Land of the Dead is my all time favorite summoning song. |
2 | | Summoning Old Mornings Dawn
Exactly what modern summoning should be. Nice and polished (but not too polished) production, great sounding keyboards and instrumentation, and really interesting songwriting. The stretch from the title track to caradhras is incredible. |
3 | | Summoning Stronghold
An epic and powerful album, this record kicks off with one of my favorite summoning tracks, Long Lost To Where No Pathway Goes. The chorus is the very definition of epic. It feels low fi but in a good way that helps it feel even bigger. |
4 | | Summoning Minas Morgul
The classic that started it all, Minas suffers from a (imo) weaker back half, especially the last 3 tracks. Still, classics like the passing of the grey company (my 2nd fav track from them), morthond and ungolianth still stand strong. |
5 | | Summoning Dol Guldur
All together more even than Minas but there aren't any true classics like it has. Nightshade forests, Khazad Dúm and Over Old Hills come close, though. Still an amazing album. |
6 | | Summoning Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame
A fan favorite, this one just hasn't hit my as hard as it does with most people. I absolutely love some tracks (especially south away and farewell), but some feel weaker and don't speak to me. Still really like it but it does feel lesser. Farewell is in my top 5 summoning tracks, easy. |
7 | | Summoning With Doom We Come
Feels to me like a slight rehash of Old Morning's Dawn but with really lackluster mixing and production. There are some great tracks but it all around is the first album of this list that i do not love or really enjoy to some extent.
*edit* since making this list this album has grown on me a lot, now the only track i dont really dig is mirklands. Rest is very good. The album's position doesn't change though. |
8 | | Summoning Lugburz
A raw and visceral black metal record that lacks the classic summoning touch (for the most part). It's not terrible but does suffer from bad production and somewhat uninteresting songwriting. |
