Reviewing the Halloween series

neeka did this for Friday the 13th, and I figured I was due for a re-watch of the Halloween movies (especially with this sequel coming out in 10 days!!!) so here we go. Watching each movie and giving my useless thoughts

22 Days Til Halloween: I Got This Costume From...

HALLOWEEN 4: THE RETURN OF MICHAEL MYERS
Alright I'm actually starting with Halloween 4 since I watch the first three just about every year. So I remember not really enjoying this when I first watched it maybe three of four years ago. Danielle Harris was uninteresting to me, and I remember getting really sleepy when people were sneaking around that house near the final act. Upon my re-watch though, I actually really enjoyed it. It has way more Halloween spirit and atmosphere than I remembered, something the first movie sorely lacks. Harris wasn't insufferable yet, and we still have Donald Pleasance! But can we talk about how absurd it is that a mob of rednecks with shotguns spent their night hunting down Michael, and when they absolutely annihilate an innocent kid hiding in the bushes, the cops just let these guys continue on their hunt? Ridiculous. Pretty fun movie.

14 Days Til Halloween: Voice From The Dead Forest

HALLOWEEN (1978)
Going all out of order. Who cares. My friends talked over about 90% of this movie but thank god I've seen it many times and know it well. Maybe it's just all the hype around the new one, or the fact that I become more obsessed with the holiday every time it rolls around, but I think I'm enjoying this movie more than I ever used to. I absolutely love all the outside shots of the house across the street. Sometimes Michael is there, sometimes he's gone, sometimes he's carrying a body. Maybe it's Laurie running across the street as he stalks her. Another sequence I somehow completely forgot about is the final one, where the theme plays as we get a glimpse of every major room or set from Michael's night of carnage. It subtly shows us the terror he has caused, while also reminding us...he's still out there.

12 Days Til Halloween: Face Sling Shot

HALLOWEEN (2018)
(Part 1) Finally. I waited so long for this. It got off to a slow start, but once it picked up, it never stopped. Spoilers ahead! So first, I will say that the podcasters subplot was dumb. I didn't like that these random nerds got to visit him in prison and essentially taunt him with the mask. I'm glad they died - brutally - early on. The soundtrack was amazing and truly elevated this thing during intense moments. The black kid was hilarious. I'll admit that the jokes should have stopped when he got in bed, and the tone was a bit confused when the babysitter was being murdered. The tracking shots were fantastic. I particularly loved seeing his reflection in the window, then his shadow past the house, and then the knife in the neck. I could feel everyone in the theater silently cheering Michael on during that scene. Honestly, all of his kills were awesome and they added just the right amount of gore.

(Part 2) I got weary of the "new Loomis" really quickly and felt his character and twist were a bit unnecessary. Lots of nods and throwbacks to the old movies. Anybody catch that Cameron was Lonny's son? ("Lonny, get your ass outta there!") Also the three trick or treaters wearing the masks from Halloween 3! Sometimes too much fan service, but I'll allow it. I loved how competent the Strodes were. Laurie was a badass, and all three generations of Strode women got to do some damage to Michael in the end. I also appreciate the abrupt ending. No extra fluff or cliche "everything is happy...BUT IT ISN'T!" moments.
